MK played WAM as opener and Haul Away. With Bob he did Pillbox, Things have changed, Baby Blue and Mississippi. MK did a fantastic HFB and SAN, wow!!! There was a stage rush before SFA, made it to the front and was standing right in front of a smiling MK. Did I say I want to marry him? No? Well, now I did  ;D

Bob's on now, gotta pay some attention. Glad to have earplugs with me, he is LOUD again.

Poor Bob! There's a discussion on ER at the moment as to whether BD is tone deaf and/or just hard of hearing. No joke, it's bound to happen to any life long gigging muso.

Thanks for reporting GH.

It's either that, or it's modern art and he does it on purpose, or he is doing caricatures of his own stuff. I feel sorry for Bob too, he sure doesn't deserve reactions like ear covering. On the other hand, I can't help but laugh when he's doing those weird organ sounds  :-\

Just got home from the concert(s). I'm not quite blown away by the performance. Mark and his band were okay - but not top-notch. The two new songs were a welcome change but imho Privateering sounds a bit like Marbletown and Haul Away is like Piper To The End. Not very exciting to me - but let's wait till the release of the new album.

HFB was sublime - and SAN was the best version I've ever heard live. I'm of two minds about Ian and Jim. They certainly add a new flavour to the sound - but I think I like Danny's drumming better and Jim was hard to hear through the mix. As I've feared the sound in the O2 World was awful. This ugly venue should never have been built!

Now Bob's part: I know he can't sing in the classical sense - he sounded like he'd swallowed a nasty demon rumbling in his belly  :lol - that's okay. But why on earth must he "play" guitar and organ? Mark tried his best to camouflage Bob's mistakes (he played with Bob during the first four songs) but it was very hard. His musicians were not any better - sometimes it sounded like free jazz. Before the next song they always fiddled around and plunked a while - maybe trying to spot the right chords or whatever. A bunch of street musicians would have done a better job.  :disbelief

That's funny, Guy is always going on about how top notch they are, but what does he know he's just a professional musician, not an online expert :lol :lol :lol

tobi, if there is one thing i and most of us on here are truly convinced about, then it is the high level of musicianship of bob's band.
i believe you were the first one, to say it differently. tastes differ i guess.
just out of curiosity, do you play any musical instruments yourself?

And he also keeps on saying that Mark and his band is getting better and better each tour - an opinion I can't share. But that's just my point of view - no offence!

I was thinking about the very same this morning when I listened to the Oberhausen show again. Yes, Ian plays some other stuff than Danny, Jim the same, but if it is really better or not? I haven't made my decision yet. On the other hand, Danny for example played hundreds of shows with MK, Ian is just at the beginning, so he has a lot of time to evolve sure enough. The question is: Is he willing to evolve (not as a drummer of course, but as an MK drummer  ;) )...
Professional as he is, he might have the next engagement fixed already. For Danny, it was obviously always an honour to play for Mark, and it seemed to me that he was not so very much booked out and had so many other commitments, apart from George Michael maybe ...

About Jim, Guy answered a few days ago something that I have trouble to interpret correctly: The question was about Jim and Matt and the question was

Jim is also busier than Matt. Does this infer we can look forward to the new release being busier, musically, to further complement Mark's playing, songwriting and storytelling?

Guy answered, in a very definite way:

Sorry, can't let that slip by. Jim is NOT busier than Matt. You couldn't be more wrong with that one.

Could this be some kind of misunderstanding, and Guy talks about being busy in general than being busy on the record? Would be interesting to hear your opinions on this one.

Yes, I've been playing the guitar for fifteen years - Or I should say: struggling with the guitar ;D Here's a link to the pure solo contest: http://www.puresolo.com/users/28781 (I know, not in time - but hey, it was just one take  :))

I'm not a professional musician and don't get me wrong: Bob's musicians surely have a high level of musicianship but with Bob they can't fully unfold imho.

been listening to sooo many boots from this recent tour now and all i can say is that each and every member of his band are fantastic, it is bob imho who should not be plucking away on his guitar when mark's around, he is just not good enough at it to play with him, on stage.
when he is on his own, totally different story, but he should not interrupt mark, or stu or charlie with one of his inferior solo's, and stick to his harmonica/organ/singing.

But Bob is the boss, he's doing whatever he wants.
I think that you probably are not a good enough fan yet to understand the meaning of Bob playing and the way to achieve it. You still need to learn to get the proper key and find pout how superior albeit quite unusual is Bob when playing any instrument. This has to be to every others people on stage (and in ht eaudience too) to reach Bob's level.
If you can't get up that high, better's to stay on lower lever and enjoy DG, EC or MK much simple playing for casual listener.  :P

My take on this is that Guy thinks that Matt's playing in general was "busier" than Jim's.
I think certain parts of Jim's playing is busier to my untrained (musically) ears. The little phrases? on the high notes in that "Delta" style (like on Fare Thee Well Northumberland and the Rag picker's dream) is what makes me interpret it that way? But that is only a couple of instances. So Guy must think that overall Matt's playing style is busier?

I have been listening to a few of the recordings from these concerts and on STP I am really missing the wonderful "conversations" that Matt and Mark had with eachother on the instrumental half of the song.   It doesn't seem to happen with Jim in the same sort of way, but of course, he isn't Matt, so there are bound to be different interpretations.  :-\

Yes, for me, too, that is the ultimate part, the reference song for any pianist, same with Sultans and drummers. In my opinion Jim didn't nail it until now. But we should not forget that it was him who created those famous parts on the album back in 2000, so it is more like "not back to form again", or maybe MK and his music have indeed involved so much since then that he cannot keep up. The same with his rather loud organ parts on Speedway: They are loud, but somehow too wild, not really fitting in the song in my opinion. I love however the organ parts on Haul Away, not sure if he or Guy does them.
