I'll be there as well.

Last time MK played in the Globe Arena (-06) he had a few things to say about the audience. Hope we'll give him a better time tonight.  ;D

Hovet!  :)
But it makes sense, the Globe feels very empty whether is packed or not as long as the audience don't go crazy (which you probably need something hot and sweaty, load and greasy for..).

Ok, here we go. A little review about a strange yet very nice evening.

Row 4, a bit too far to the left (I did expect just a little bit better from MK.com)

The MK Set

Why Aye Man
This tour have I prefered What it is as an opener to this one, as he plays that one better than in years.
An unconcentrated MK fumbling out the first verse. Still, quite good and better than two last tours.
Cleaning my Gun
Finally, fixed to the setlist. Why the hell wasn't it last year?
Sailing to Philadelphia
I always thought of this song as a kinda boring concert song. But after this eve I have to take it back. Fabulous stuff.
The Hill Farmer's Blues
Good, as always.
Privateering
THIS is music. MK enjoyed playing it.
Song for Sonny Liston
First tour standing up and it's for sure a cool song. A lot actually enjoyed it.
Haul Away
Beautiful.
Marbletown
A song that have managed to become better from album, to the first tour, to the second and to peak at this one. Amazing interaction between the guys and their instruments. A lot of people really liked it.
Brothers in Arms
What can I say? To this date this song still works amazingly well. And the audience likes it. First standing ovation.
Speedway at Nazareth
Blown away. Another one which has become better from tour to tour. When Richard enters with the Les Paul I don't really know what to do.
So Far Away
Good I guess. Quite boring, yet much better than KTGC tour or last one for that matter.

The Dylan Set

I don't know what you guys talk about? Dylan was really good and sang well, mostly (except for the three last). This is of course a subjective thought, but I think MK really improved Dylan's performance during the songs they did together. Also really nice to see where really MK belongs - not in the spotlight. And neither on autopilot, where he unfortunately tends to go. Good band, Bob was fun to watch (what a fox!), Charlie Sexton (sounds like a porn star) was whipping his hair back and forth throughout the concert, everthing was fine. I smiled many times when Dylan played his organ. It looked and sounded like he thought "I have no clue what the hell I'm doing - But I love it!".

Well, not everything was fine. The audience were the strangest thing I've ever seen. Mostly BD fans, what it seemed like. What I tought during and right after MK's set was that I felt a bit sorry for MK and the band. Well, they did get applauses and stuff and at least one and a half standing ovation, but over all, the audience sucked big time. But this is just half of the story. I imagined these people were just waiting for their "one and only" Bob Dylan. That wasn't the case. In the end, Mark Knopfler and the band got way more feedback from the crowd than Dylan did! And in this big golf ball were 85 % BD fans. Still, it was a boring crowd and I hope we didn't scared them away for future tours. And I can't desist from being a little sad about Bob Dylan after the last song when he said good bye and leaved in hurry to very little feedback.

Summary

If Privateering and Haul Away are songs to expect for the next album we can be very happy. It's highly possible it will be better than GL.
MK's improved in singing and guitar playing a lot from KTGC tour.
Ian Thomas is better than Danny. I like changes.
McGoldrick and McCusker are two amazing musicians.
I can see why the uninitiated think that MK looks tired and unhappy. But I think those things shows in different ways than from a smile in his case. Of course he likes what he's doing, otherwise he wouldn't record and tour in this scale.
Bob Dylan must be the coolest cat that walks the earth.

I attended a Dylan show at the Globen some years back and I'm not sure whether it is the audience as such or the shape and size of the venue (or maybe even the officiousness of some of the attendants) but the place lacked atmosphere. A few days later, I attended Dylan's show at the Forum (?) in Copenhagen and there was more atmosphere but too many members of the audience had drunk rather too much and were constantly going back and forth, so that trying to focus on the performasnce was not easy. I guess it is not  easy to get the right balance.

I agree with the comment about McCusker and McGoldrick - great musicians who really enhance the texture of the music. They add to the variety of sounds and seemed to me to be getting proportionately more attention from MK than even on the last tour.

Yesterday I think it was a mixture of the size and the audience. Most were there for Dylan but even during his set didn't they make so much noise. But it should be said, The Globe Arena isn't a great venue if there's not a rock concert. I've seen at least a few concerts (and a lot of ice hockey) there before, and it's difficult to get a good atmosphere. I'd love to see MK at a place in Stockholm called Cirkus which is proper music venue with around 1500 seats. The Globe was working nice for MK pre -05.

I've not followed this thread too closely, so I apologise if you've seen this before. It is "To Ramona" from Stockholm, shot from an unusual angle - one of the advantages of the "golf ball" shape of the venue, I guess.

You get a brief glimpse of Mark at the start and more of him at the end.

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=2382229408061

And for those unfamiliar with the lyrics, here they are:-

To Ramona

Ramona
Come closer
Shut softly your watery eyes
The pangs of your sadness
Shall pass as your senses will rise
The flowers of the city
Though breathlike
Get deathlike at times
And there

Yep, two years ago. Even if it would be highly possible to have MK there, I mean the US gigs last year were mostly small theaters, I think that'll never happen. But I guess that has to do with promotors.

Thanks for the video link! Great quality!

Also, a question to you folks (Don't wanna start a new thread): On MK.com you can read that "Dylan

Yes, it has to do with promoters but also with Dylan (or, at least, with his touring management) and the fee he seeks and the profit the promoter and the venue wish to make. As it happens, most of Dylan's European tours are co-ordinated through a UK promoter who commonly uses local promoters in each country to set up things there, so there can be two lots of promoters to satisfy, financially. They, of course, have to assess Dylan's likely ticket sales and the prices that might be charged (taking account of his popularity, how long since his last visit, how well he did last time, where the other cities are on the tour, how favourable recent media coverage has been, and so on and so on) and then have to balance that against what the venues want. Dylan's small venue date in Stockholm was added after the tour had been set up, so the basic economics of the tour had essentially been worked out already.

As for Mark appearing on Dylan's 1973 "DYLAN" album, I think not. That album was issued by Columbia Records after Dylan had moved to Asylum Records. Columbia used material recorded in 1970.

To solve the 1973 association mystery, the key is "The Lily of the West".
It's on Dylan's album and Knopfler played a version in the 90's with The Chieftains.

I wouldn't be surprised if the guy who wrote the article made the confusion.  ::)

Interesting that Richard wrote quite the opposite of Guy about the show.

"[...] No matter, it was one of the best shows of the tour, loads of energy yet very relaxed... a good combination and one that suits this group. It was a fantastic Stockholm crowd that truly loved tonight's show and made our 70 minutes fly by even quicker than usual."

Sure the Stockholm crowd wasn't fantastic, but it's possible that it was one of the better shows on stage. Richard seemed like the most relaxed and the one enjoying it the most, really smiled a lot.

One thing that has struck me after listening to the Jofa recording from the Stockholm show..it's too bad that Mark would probably never consider playing either "To Romona" or "Things have changed" on his own...with him covering the vocals..and without the occasional slips on the guitar or the harmonica overpowering his flawless noodling..if only.

Nice idea actually.  I think it'd be good if Bob would give MK a couple of proper solo's similar to when he played with EC.  I can't help but get the feeling sometimes he's a little wasted.
