Title: AMIT TV
Post by: shangri la 1 on April 10, 2012, 11:31:06 PM
AMIT TV

AMIT TV channel is devoted to compiling the complete and definitive collection of Mark Knopfler's work, from earliest known performances in Dire Straits, through the Notting Hillbillies and up to the present day.

All available Concerts, interviews, made for TV specials, featuring, Mark & the bands, will be added to the channel at regular intervals. (proposed for 1 release per week on Saturday at this stage)

We expect that the channel may never be finished.

Information files will be incorporated as new and rare finds are documented and as Mark Knopfler's musical genius continues to evolve. We welcome any input and new material (when uncovered), along with suggestions and known

Hi Fletch, Thanks for your vote of confidence in subscribing.

I'm not all that tech savvy, but from my experience the better sounding audio recordings that I have are Flac/wav files. They just seem to have so much more depth and "fill in" sounds going on, if you get my meaning. You hear something different every time you play the track. Mp3's and similar sound muddled/muffled to me. Mind you some "poorly" recorded Flac files can also sound like that.

Maybe Dan or others who have more knowledge of sound waves etc may be able to explain it better?
I remember seeing those charts of sound waves from recordings. I think the wider the wave the better the sound - generally?

That does not mean that there are not copyright on it, and this is still official stuff even if not commercialy released.
But as long as no copyright holder involved are complaining to Youtube about this being put online we can assume that this is ok.

Whaauww SL, this is wonderful! I love watching video's videos of Mark/DS/ NHB and also listening to interviews and all the other information I can get!
Having them all together now at Youtube is fantastic. :P

I remember when I just joined the forum in 2006, people were copying and sending each other CD's /DVD of the series OUATITV (the long time fans know what I mean). I only got a few of them and then the sending and copying stopped because of the possibility of torrents, Spanish tracker etc! Pottel was so sweet to help me and told me what to do, but after I bought a new computer I never used it anymore, because I didn't have time to install and learn again ..........and to be honest it all was very difficult to me!  :-[

I love the idea of having all the video's together at one channel at Youtube now! ......Thank you and other fans for all the work you do!  ;D

Just like BBB and others I am looking forward to watch! :P

Dire Straits - "Old grey whistle test 1978"
For their, "as far as we know", 1st live TV performance I thought the band were very tight and both numbers played were excellent. Also liked the Guitar Hero's at the BBC info panels during Sultans which appear on this copy. Liked this bit on Wiki's page re OGWT Quote:- "The Old Grey Whistle Test.....while continuing to feature non-chart music." As we now Know things were about to change.

Yes Fieneke we are greatly indebted to direfan for that great collection which he worked on for many long hours. If we are permitted by the power's that be on the Web, every legal (copyright) segment on those QUATITTV's 26 DVD's will feature on AMIT TV over the next year or so.

So thanks to my son (!) the easy option is to copy a youtube url into this website - http://keepvid.com/
You then have options to download different video formats AND/OR the audio of the vid!

So, I`ll now be able to make my own collection of unofficial Bootlegs without nasty torrents / upload ratings and all the headaches that come with it!

So wonderful that, AMIT TV is attempting to add some sort of chronological order to the vids - thank you, thank you , thank you !

Yes well spotted Val. I got the venue wrong. Will make the correction tomorrow. This is the type of feedback we want folks. Any confirmed corrections as we proceed are welcomed.

The series of Revolver was made in Manchester not Birmingham (where the famous "Barbarella's show  was recorded 5 days earlier). The date difference is that ours is the date the band recorded the show and the broadcast date was on 25th November. We are going to list performances based on the location/date of the recordings as we go... As per the old neck-and neck site below

http://www.neck-and-neck.com/library/diary/diary02.html

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0305093/episodes?year=1978
I thought it strange that when you click on the episode in question and the full cast and crew tab DS don't feature?

We are updating the restricted syndication setting. You will be able to restrict syndication to monetized platforms only. Videos using the restricted setting will be automatically migrated to monetized platforms on July 1st.

We hope the sake of our subscribers, that this isn't something which may impact future releases.

The great thing about this is it's so easy to rip the audio from YouTube and convert to mp3 (I know this is sacrilege to some of you, but if you can hear the difference on an average car stereo then good luck!)

Consequently I am now enjoying Rockpalast while cruising around during work! :)

Those type of DS interviews make me uncomfortable. The band behaves almost like a parody of immature "were too good for this crap" rock stars, similar to David's moaning in the Arena doc.
I find it disrespectful, and if it was just a one off I could understand, but the same vibe and behavior is seen right through to the Sydney BIA interviews.

I made a post in the Spanish City website about it, so I guess its so popular because of that between spanish fans.

Nop, that was a R & J where Hal played a Red Fender, I thinl it was the Top of the Pops...

This clip always amazed me because MK is playing the National Tricone instead of the O Style...

Post by: shangri la 1 on June 23, 2012, 09:33:11 AM
Yes  jbaent. Very rare to see R&J played without his 'O' style beauty, with the palm trees. The band did quite a bit of experimentation with songs during this period also, so Mark may have also wanted to do things a bit different in video clips at this time as well?

Sorry Fletch. According to the YT account it has the same settings as the others that you can access. Strange thing though when it was released - it slotted into a "3-weeks ago" time frame, so maybe th YT system has a flaw or something? You should also be able to see today's special audio only release. Let us know how you get on.

Yes this is very frustrating. It seems like there must be an instant recognition of certain content in some videos, as the moment they are uploaded the "Video blocked in some countries" sign is instantly shown. So far we have lost 6 of the 41 uploads.

Me too I always loved the groove of that outro. It's nice that we have a few live audio versions of it around also. My first TV experience was the Kenny Everett clip at AMIT TV 21. I modified the end of the clip to include a live outro for that upload.

So  Extended dance Play was recorded 30 years ago today(1-3 October 1982)  It hasn't lost from it's freshness at all.
I know it is not the right place, but some info for the various releases. It is incomplete since I can only write about the ones I have in my possession.

First the 12''

USA release from WB (029800 on the label-9- 29800-0A on the spine) is 33rpm and it mentions it in the front cover. It also mentions $4.98 on the spine. There is a cover variant that instead of "ExtendedancE Play", it has a simple "Extended play". The usual WB ecru lined (or not) label. Pick Withers' last mention on a DS regular release. Vinyl exits from the sleeve as a normal LP.
Canada release from Vertigo/Polygram  (VEP 314) like the USA one with some nice differences. It  has side one as "This twist" and side two as "That twist". Also 33RPM but no mention anywhere. The orange to yellow label.
Mexican release Vertigo/Polygram (3055   /  6400747) has a unique completely different cover, painting of a blond girl's head profile, wearing red sun glasses and a hat with wings like Hermes! On the right bottom corner it has the sketch of the regular release dancing couple in B&W. It is named "Twisteando en la alberca-Vertigo Mix". Unlike the other American editions it is 45RMP and has three tracks, like the European release. Spaceship labels.
UK edition  Vertigo (DSTR 212) considered the standard edition is 45 RPM and has 3 tracks.  Has a specially designed record label with  the dancing couple. Vinyl exits from the top like a maxi single.
French release Vertigo/Polygram (6400747) looks like the UK edition, with 3 differences. It has a spine but no writing on it, mentions 45 T. GEANT on the front cover and it has black and silver spaceship labels.
W.Germany edition Vertigo/Phonogram (6400766) is a nice little European exception!  It follows the USA 4 tracks version, but in 45RPM! On the cover, Pick Withers in not mentioned! It has the orange and black spaceship labels.

7'' releases

Holland release Vertigo (6205062) with three songs, TBTP and TYL on side one and IIHY on the second, obviously for space reasons. 33RPM. Usual white labels. (Juke box center)
UK release Vertigo (DSTR2) is like the Holland one. When it comes to labels we have two versions, the silver/black vinyl wax casted and the special designed label like the 12''  (turntable centers)
Greek edition Vertigo /Polygram (6205062 also has DSTR2 on the cover) has some minor differences on the coloring of the "ExtendedancE Play" and he Polygram Greek addresses, as well as the printers. It has a silverish label with vertigo swirl on top and an easy to remove (for juke boxes) center!!!
UK Promo DJ release Vertigo (DSDJ 2) as "Dance Play" with TBTP on side 1 and TYL on side 2, has  no sleeve, silver vinyl wax casted label. (Juke box center)
Canadian promo Polygram/Vertigo (SOV 2320) with white label and blue letters in a Polygram die cut envelope. Side 1 as twist One has TBTP ans Side 2 as Train Two has Eastbound train (live)!(Juke box center)
USA promo in WB (7-29706) has TBTP in Mono and in Stereo! Regular WB ecru lined label in generic die cut sleeve. (Juke box center).

Last but not least a 1989 golden looking CD-video release Vertigo (080136-2-barcode 044008013624) of twisting by the pool, with 4 audio tracks (TBTP,TYL,IIHY, and TYL live) and the TPTP video) Made in Germany.

Please anyone, feel free to add the releases I am missing and maybe we can start a database with all the releases of DS and MK. And with photos!

Interesting facts. I never was aware of a version with Badges, Posters Stickers & T-Shirts, but that seems to be the forth track? I have the 12" Vinyl ExtendedancEPlay, but with 3 tracks only - to be played on 45 - so it seems it is the UK version.

And I always thought (not based on facts but on pure guessing) that this was the first "test" or let's say "rehearsal session" with the new drummer - so after Pick left and Terry was chosen as the new drummer, it was decided, let's have some fun and do some rock n' roll after all this epic mess on LOG...  ;)
Therefore I would presume Pick Withers has nothing to do with this recording at all?

EDIT: Googled and found this: As Badges, Posters.... was a left-over from the LOG sessions, Pick had to be mentioned because of his appearance on that song. The "pure" three songs for this EP recorded at Jam Studios were all with Terry on drums.

I have the cassette version of extendeddancEPlay, I guess from canada, and it has badges...on it :
side A : twisting + bages
side B : 2 YL + if I had you

and of course Pick is mentionned on drums just for bagdges, while terry is mentioned on the 3 other tracks

I have a 12" one.  Oops, wrong thread!

LE is right.  I was only looking at LOG on Wikipedia yesterday and it said Badges was a leftover from the album so this will explain Picks role on this track.

I didn't put down all the credits of the albums, figuring that you would all know. And you do know! ;D  Yes, Pick is mentioned only for Badges. But while on the 3 track editions his  name justifiably is not there, because he didn't contribute, it is also absent from the W.Germany with the 4 tracks! And that is why I mentioned it.

So with Badges AND Private Dancer we do know two left-overs from LOG - two songs that don't fit at all with the other five tracks... Mark's initial plans of LOG as a double album maybe would have obtained interesting results... I love Badges by the way, really one of the coolest tracks of MK ever written...

I love Badges too.  Been listening to it a lot lately, ever since that poll came out for best B-side!

Remember, just because it's a LOG left-over it doesn't mean it was recorded back then.  It may have been recorded during the same sessions as the other songs on the EP and therefore had Terry playing... :-\

Private dancer is very close to Love over gold (song and album sound) musically, and he might have had a different set of lyrics for a male delivery, or maybe he wrote some new lyrics on a close to LoG tune. Unlike the other MK penned song "Overnight sensation", from Tina's next album "Break every rule", I think Private dancer was not written with Tina in mind, but gave it away when he was asked.  An MK rough "sketch" recording is known to exist. By the wayMK contributes in 3 Tina albums, and on the double live one, Tina included a photo of her with MK, while there was no further contribution on that one.
Badges is funny, and has the sound of early DS, like Eastbound train, certainly not fit for the LoG album, but great for the summer-y  Extended dance Play. But surely it is Pick on the drums, since it's first appearance is as B-side of the Private investigations single. I like the lyrics, making plenty  money out of merchandise, while they are musicians must have been hilarious for MK back then.

I don't think so, I guess badges was recorde during LOG sesssions, because it was the Bside of Private investigations

the recording of the EP (1-2-3 october 1982) was after LOG release, and I think after PI single release

Wikipedia presents a huge confusing list of leftovers from the album

"I like to go to work"
"Worth your while"
"Music"
"Badges, Posters, Stickers and T-Shirts"
"Private Dancer"
"The Way it Always Starts"

"I like to go to work" - a line on TR. In another post, we were guessing about the fact that TR should have been the result of two different songs, or tentative songs, mixed together after all

"Worth your while" - it's a line on INR. Maybe the same of the above have happened here.

"Music" - no clue

"Badges, Posters, Stickers and T-Shirts" - we know what MK did last summer

"Private Dancer" - other known result

"The Way it Always Starts" - ended up on LH soundtrack. Maybe it was written during the sessions for LOG, but reserved to another release. And for me the song has a LOG flavour.

ah yes, I had forgotten this song. yes it was another left out from LOG. I guess it's mentionned in the Oldfield book, such as badges.
I don't know if a recording from these sessions exists, never heard about it.

maybe some other riffs or ideas of the Local hero soundtrack come from LOG sessions :
things like freeway flyer or stargazer may have fit very well with the LOG sound, and were maybe musical ideas from these sessions.

and maybe Mark had in mind to do such things like  a fistuf of iceream which is a variation on PI 's theme, and when you think that at the time Mark's songs were at leats 6 min long, you don't need much more tracks to get a full double album

Yes, in the film Comfort and Joy actor Bill Forsyth's character mentions It Never Rains in the film (he is a deejay) and also an extract from TR (the intro) is played as incidental music.  Never thought I'd say TR is incidental music! :o

I have seen the movie twice and I like the sparce direction very much, but it was never meant to be a blockbuster. The Comfort and Joy 3 track soundtrack which is not that easy to find, but not impossible either, must be heard together with LoG as the soundtrack of the movie. It is like the thing we were talking about in another irrelevant thread! ;D The director must have liked the demos and used them, cause TR parts used sound a bit different to me. But the rest of the titles I have seen in a Greek magazine interview and they are surely early versions of songs that ended up as the finished ones we know. Many artists try to copyright their songs even at an early stage but they have to give a name even if it is temporary.

Twisting by the pool was issued in this CD-Video format but I have seen at least one more edition on ebaywith different cover and not in a slimcase. No other info I am afraid.

I don't know how many people outside of the UK (or indeed Scotland) know, but Comfort and Joy is based on the true story of Glasgow's "ice cream wars" in the 1980s:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasgow_Ice_Cream_Wars

Yes, dmg, thank you for bringing it to our attention! The evidence was really crap. And what an ending. Like "In the name of the father" .
Yes, everybody believes in the honesty of the police. And the judges for that matter...

But if it all happened by April 1984, how did they released the film also in 1984?

I saw the film with double interest because my wife works most of her life in an ice cream factory-shop! The first 5 minutes are cinema highlight. When he sees her packing and asks what is going on and her answer:"Oh, I am leaving, I've been meaning to tell you for a long time but it never came up" or something is magnificent!! (and bloody painful, when all human has is logic and language to express it)

I was only a young boy at the time but remember it being on the news at night quite often.  I think the court cases started around '84 but the violence between families involved had been going on for a while before that.

My second (or third-haven't made up my mind) favourite band lives and works in Glasgow: Belle and Sebastian. Stuart Murdoch, the main songwriter, lead singer etc. was directing his first film during this summer. God help the girl. Did you notice anything? (OK it sounds as if I think that Glasgow is a small village, but just in case) And Ian Rantkin with inspector Rembous is living there as well and most of his stories are located in Glasgow. He is the only modern detective stories writer I can bare and read.

And if you come by Athens, ice cream is on me. It is really an addiction.  ;D

It's sometimes strange how history seems to sometimes repeat itself. Whilst juggling the release dates for AMIT TV to allow for the album release dates and then the Canada/US tour, three videos from the 83-84 era have become aligned with events in 2012. Unfortunately due to recent tightening of copyright issues by You tube not everyone will be able to see the way it has unfolded.

The first was the Wednesday, 10 October 2012 release of

AMIT TV is a wonderful idea, but in my humble opinion is a nonsense when it can't be watched by everybody and we have to help people one by one to watch that videos...

Maybe it would be a good idea to start from the beguining in other place better than youtube, or at least, place at other sites the videos that are problematic with youtube.

Playing the devil's advocate now, even though I really don't agree with what I am about to say: AMIT usually avoids official releases and Live Aid has an official DVD release. However, this was allowed in youtube!!!! Makes me wonder, if there is a way to bypass the copyright control of youtube. Avoid any keywords etc. Maybe even leaving blank a post or with misleading name. We AMITers see it and download it and after a month or so change the name to public view. Or can it work as unlisted video?

Interesting point.  Uploaded as "Wembley Stadium 13.07.85," we AMITers would all be well aware of what gig it was.

Thanks to all members, for their positive feed-back re AMIT TV. We are still fine tuning things and trying out new methods to avoid the copyright issues we have had so far.
We know well in advance of publication dates whether or not a claim is made against any upload, and when time allows we may be able to come up with a solution of sorts.
It seems that some videos which have made it to free to air TV at some stage (and the recognition system seems to know the difference) are allowed to be published in all/ or most regions.
We have tried things like altering the titles and written content of uploads since the start of AMIT TV, but so far from what evidence we have there is some kind of digital recognition which weeds out selective content on videos. There have been several videos published where 4 or 5 studio version audio or video tracks have been present, but only 2-3 have had copyright issues associated with them.
We are going to try a new approach in the new year where audio claims are made, and that is to substitute the claimed content with a live version of the same song. The sync will be out but the context should still be ok. It won

Thanks so much for that first one.  Can't ever remember seeing that before.  Do you think the concert clips were perhaps taken from the Israel concert?  It must have been an early one and that was filmed for The Tube.

Good to see different people down in the tunnel with the busker from all walks of life instead of the silly sporting bloopers too.

Yes dmg the clips were taken from rehersal videos which were included in the Israel TV special at the start of the BIA tour.

PS I understand the later WOL video had some connection to a US TV sports channel...anyone else can confirm this?

We are going to try continuing with full concerts and longer than 15min TV interviews etc on a 2nd channel, but will eventually run into the same problems I am sure.

Too bad U2 broke the record, almost 20 years after. In a way the record would be unbreakable if one  compares and counts the then population with the more recent during the U2 concert. And of course the different economic situations! Let alone the quality of the U2 material in  2006.  :disbelief
I guess it was a unique lifetime experience, 55000 people!!!

AMIT TV wouldn't be able to reach its full potential without the team effort we have seen from youself and the other editors behind the scenes. I just hope this 'third party" content issue from google that was changed in September doesn't derail the whole thing. We will just have to find an alternative to sharing our man's gems with the non-mk world.

AMIT TV SCHEDULE FOR FEBRUARY 2013

We are still here for now! But with the changes to "third party" rules we will lose our ability to upload videos longer than 15 minutes on our 2nd channel before too long. I suspect we may get banned altogether based on what I have seen from other YT users.. wait and see.
Our Channels:- Mark Knopfler -  http://www.youtube.com/user/amarkintime1?feature=mhee
                         AMARK INTIMECONCERTS - http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcEXjVCGgP7-QTlfcOzDlmQ/videos?view=0&flow=grid

I suggest again, and I know its a lot of work, that we may emigrate to other places, like Vimeo...

Maybe we can try to upload some videos at both sites at the same time and see how they work, and if vimeo works better, emigrate and reupload everything.

Just watched bits of the Montreal '85 video again and noticed that it was the first concert on the North American leg of the tour and would be the first where MK used the white Schecter Strat on Sultans and he still used his Gibson LP reissue for MFN, despite using the Steinberger in the video from Toronto only three days later.

Before this video I had (wrongly) assumed that the changeover to the Steinberger had happened at this very concert but obviously not.  There were two more concerts in Ottawa before Toronto on the 26th - I wonder what he used on MFN there... :think

I doubt very much that this (nice) documentary is from 1988. The album was released in March 1990, and the clip uses some of the already recorded and mixed album stuff. "Missing... presumed having a good time" is said to be recorded in 1989/1990, but the finished album tracks are probably from the very end of this recording period.

Thank you so much for this video!  :thumbsup   I remember seeing this interview on TV - it was an extract from a programme called "Rapido".  The presenter of the programme was Antoine de Caunes and Tracey MacLeod was the interviewer.   I'm pretty sure it was March 1989.

I have been searching for years to find the whole programme on YouTube, but to no avail! I hope it exists somewhere, because it made a great impression on me at the time - so did MK!     ;)

Yes it is from Rapido, broadcasted on french TV cannel "canal +".
I remember well wacthing this documentary  with Mark and Brendan  playing on national together, and Marks talking about songs like "set me up"
but I didn't remember exactly the date it was boradcasted.
I can't recall if it was before or after the album release.

As Val said, march 1989 could be true.

Hi Love Expresso, Superval & JF thanks to you all, for the feedback re the 'Notting Hillbillies - 'Celebration' TV short documentary 1988', video.
We are now able to publish a more accurate time for when this video was aired on TV. There is a split consensus from several different sites on the web, some still claiming it was Thursday, 14 April 1988 (maybe due to Brendan

I have dug out my copy of Myles Palmer's unauthorized biograpy of Mark Knopfler and in the section for The Notting Hillbillies, it has the Rapido programme in question as being on BBC2, Wednesday 7th March 1990  - so I was a year out in my estimation.   It followed a programme, "Rock Steady" the previous evening, 6th March 1990 on Channel 4 which was televised on Tuesdays.

Really enjoying these Hillbillie interviews I've never seen before, thanks SL!

I'm amazed how quickly YT or the record companies move to Ban a vid you post, any insights on how this happens?

Yeah Fletch. They have instant, digital audio/video recognition software for (mainly but not exclusively) hit singles/best-selling and multiple copy-righted, releases. Some artists almost entire catalog is banned. They use similar but much more developed types of digital software recognition as the fairly basic ones which search engines use to point us to sites by us typing certain words etc. I suspect it recognizes lyrics or word patterns and then converts it to text before it decides which ones to allow and which ones to flag.

I must admit I have been holding my breath since Mark signed his new deal with UMG, as their artists seem to feature regularly in collaboration vids we have had banned.
Copyright changes from YT last year placed 35 previously cleared videos onto the "flagged for 3rd party content" list

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/mark-knopfler-signs-a-worldwide-deal-with-universal-music-group-214672941.html

One example is this: AMIT TV (0044) - Banned

:thumbsup Thanks vgonis. I am working on ways to edit the banned videos in an effort to remove the material which caused it to be banned in the first place.  :think It will take some time though. Some though will need be so heavily edited they won't be worthwhile doing.

SL1, may I suggest uploading them at a tracker instead?  (I believe that many of them videos were at the DVD collections at Spanish city)

By the way, with all these strikes from youtube, is there any kind of penalty, ban? I thought you are only allowed 2 mistakes-warnings every 6 months! The third comes with a ban...

Good idea vgonis. I have thought of making a batch of DVD's with all past releases, or one with just the banned videos only, at some later stage. As a lot of the content is from the OUATITTV series that Fran produced we shouldn't have any banning problems at SC tracker at least.

Not sure how the copyright issue is managed by YT. We have had 30-40 videos flagged for some reason or other and our ability to upload longer videos has been removed, but they still allow most of the flagged videos to be shown.

Thank you SL! Great videos, some I have never seen.
BTW, back in 1991, I was video taping much of MTV, in anticipation of OES. Got some interview snippets from MTV, but in poor quality, since the signal was bad. I think that I may have transfered them into a DVD somewhere. Would you like me to db them and see if you can get something out of them? I don't know whats out there and probably all of them are already out...

I don't hear much impro AFTER the piano break. There is indeed some impro BEFORE the piano break, but not something unusual IMHO

There are some small differences, not major, but listen carefully and you'll hear them!  After the US leg this part was played pretty much identical every show but I've never heard some of these licks before.  Very nice.

many thanks SL1 fo all these gems, but it seems there is a wrong picture ratio on all latest videos.
it is maybe a metadata in video codec which forces the video in "double 16/9"

anyway I enjoy listening just now the London gig (september or august ?  ;))
I prefer the romeo version from the beginning of tour, because it features pedal steel solo AND Mark's solo, which was ditched in 92
I miss it on the OTN version

Yes, keyboard intro at the start of the tour for R&J.

That's right, they didn't make the stage smaller for Sultans until '92.  Can't recall if it was just the European leg but it sounds like it was on the bootlegs. :think

It was an interview on Radio 1 in 1989 by Roger Scott.    There are a couple of pages devoted to the interview in the Myles Palmer unauthorised biography.   I don't have the recording, but if you would like, I will type the relevant part.

:think  :hmm I'm not sure if anyone has already posted about this before, if so I must have missed it!
I have always wondered why Mark played 'Sultans' again at the end of the Rockpalast concert and now a subscriber to AMIT TV may have found the answer.
this is his post:-

56:28 sounds like David played chorus chords when he should have played verse chords. Interesting small glitch from a phenomenal band. Hence the Mulligan later on. Watch Mark smile at David at that point in second version.?

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQezEWiUY8I

I'm not musically trained enough to understand what he means above, but something does sound a bit off at that point.
Mark does give David a smile at the same point during the replay....He goes over and maybe says something to David and later David goes across to talk to John! Interesting!

no it's the other way around : it's Mark's fault

he starts palying the end solo, while he must have played the middle solo.

So, the rest of the band is right, playing verse chords, while Mark is playing chorus solo... so of course it doesn't sound right.

That's why they played it again, and Mark said "let's do it properly"

BTW, at my wedding, it hapenned a similar thing, but due to the band's fault, not mine  ;D
at the end, I started playing the end solo (based on chorus chords progression) while the other guitarist and bassist played another verse !  :disbelief
so it did sound a little bit like on rockpalast !  :lol
exactly the same : the beginning of verse chords with beginning of chorus solo, and then we matched again together, but on the end solo of course, not on the verse solo like Mark in 79

and believe it or not, but we played a 2nd set, and we played Sultans again ! an then "porperly" !  :o (But I didn't say it  ;))
and at this time (in 96) I had never heard or seen the rockpalast show !  some would say it has  to do with destiny... :think ::)

It's a long story, but it has become an important part of my life right now.

Mark & his music along with his very generous and humble nature have been an inspiration to me, on how we should all live our lives.
To just spread his music as far and wide as we are able to, is the least that I can do.

Thanks

it's a shame that this video from italy 96 is banned from YT.
it's the first time I see Mark with the 61 strat in 96.
I know it's on the bkkcground on the "night in london" video, but he doesn't play it, and until the 2000 TV promo tour and the 2001 tour, I don't remember any TV appearance with this guitar

Can Anyone identify the guitarist and tracks played here at 00:50 and 18:26
I don't recognise either and 2 Subscriber's to AMIT TV have asked about them.. Any help much appreciated.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKZgVZQEJMY

I do know the guy who wrote the book, Ray Minhinnett had input in producing the original DVD of this was a keen guitarist. Don't know if it is him though. I thought the 1st part sounded like DG from PF, but Pottel has confirmed that it isn't.

The first one sounds more like Steve Vai and the second one could as well be Eric Clapton, but can't put my finger on it because their sound is much imitated.
Title: Re: AMIT TV
Post by: JF on November 10, 2014, 04:03:08 PM
Sure it's not Gilmour and sure it's not EC

I'd say it's not a known guitarist, but one who produces DVD guitar lessons, or a studio musician, who can play and imitate any styles

It sounds "perfect" but "unpersonnal" to me, that kind of muscian who is a hell of player but who will never have a success career because he can play everything but he doesn't have his own style/sound

just a thought and no offence intented
Title: Re: AMIT TV
Post by: shangri la 1 on November 16, 2014, 12:06:07 AM
Yes it may well be Ray Minhinnett, the writer of the book who is credited for "original" music on the DVD.

Well as I don't know where to post this, I put it here. You can move it if it's not the right place!!
I have a question, while watching many MK's interviews thanks to AMIT TV, I noticed that he told once that he was one day in a Pub where they were playing Telegraph Road then right after it he heard Buddy Holly!! His reaction was to say that his song had really less quality than what they did in the 50ies!!! What do you think about that? I'm fan of many Musicians because I love Music and it's a fact that they're never satisfied of their own stuff but I can't really quite understand why they're so humbles!!!

Humble or a little white lie?  You can decide!  I've often thought that some people just say these things in order to have others think the opposite (kind of reverse psychology) because surely he must know he's good for heavens sake!  Sometimes, for me anyway, he goes a little overboard in his self-deprecation.  I give him the benefit of the doubt however.  Everyone deserves that.

Thanks Dmg for your answer!!! I totally agree with you!!! And I can add that Artists like him are very conscious that what they're doing can't be that bad but they're always doubting and that's why they pretend that their work is not so perfect!! Regarding MK I was really surprised because he talked about Telegraph Road which is according to me with Tunnel of Love a master piece!! And besides you can't compare good old Rock and Roll's songs composed in the 50ies with his songs!!! It's of course different because Music is changing all the time!!
Title: Re: AMIT TV
Post by: vgonis on November 16, 2014, 11:33:02 PM
My two cents. Buddy Holly is the archetypical rock n roller, pop, rock icon. He was the first hit-maker to use a fender stratocatser, he was the first geeky looking to make it, he was amongst the first Caucasian to write original r'n'r pop songs and sing them to a wide audience, with minimal electrical aids for his guitar, and  without trying to seduce the girls (like Elvis). And his tragic death, at an early age, while his wife was expecting, made him an almost legendary thing in those days.  The fact that everybody from the Rolling stones to Hank Marvin with the shadows, were heavily influenced by him and John McLean wrote the great American Pie song just for him (the day the music died) are just few reminders of his heavy shadow in rock music. MK was young when all these things happened. Rock n roll was young, and in his memory all these songs are very special. So I really understand what MK is talking about. And of course you can not be the judge of yourself. It shows lack of modesty.

Thanks Vgonis!! I didn't know that Buddy Holly was the first caucasian artist to play with a stratocaster! So now I start to understand why MK said that!! But I still feel that he could have picked another of his songs to compare with!!
Title: Re: AMIT TV
Post by: LoveExpresso on November 17, 2014, 07:50:43 AM
No, I guess he chose TR consciously because it is so long and so ambitious and so complicated, compared to other Dire Straits songs. He had done all this brain work to do it properly and then, I think in an elevator it was, listens to a 2 or 3 minute Buddy Holly song and sees the impact that this song had on himself - and he recognized that he was on the wrong way with his own music, related to his own roots. Keep in mind that after Love Over Gold, he made that Rock'n Roll EP, simple, easy, great nevertheless.

Of course Telegraph Road is a master piece, I fully agree with that, but I guess it just broke out of him like the whole album did in some sort of creative explosion or eruption. Many songs on his recent solo albums have chosen to go the other path, the Buddy way, Who's Your Baby now, True Love Will Never Fade, and so on.

In light of the EP being described as 'easy' & 'simple' can someone explain to me what the music is doing in Badges, I've never really understood it. Is it a boogie with a chromatic motif in the last bar ? If I play along (I think in E) and add Bb A Ab maj 7ths at end, what does it all mean ?? :)

Fletch, I have no clue about it. Only to let you know Batches to me never belonged to the EP. I would have never described that one as easy! (I do own the EP and my edition contains Twisting, Two Young Lovers and If I Had You.)

This  interview was from Guitar magazine, dated January 11th 1993, which I still have in my box of MK bits and pieces!   Here is the relevant part:

'I remember sitting in a bar listening to Telegraph Road', says Mark Knopfler,  'and I thought to myself "What a lifeless bunch of old toss this is!"'

'The juke box played Rave On by Buddy Holly immediately afterwards and to me it just totally eclipsed Telegraph Road and blew it into the weeds.  Now, that's my kind of music!  Rave On was bigger and better even though there were only three instruments and it was just bursting with life and joy.  That was a real lesson to me and I think you can hear it on the last album.'

Yes Super Val but it was not on Guitar Magazine I noticed this. He said it again in a filmed interview too that I saw recently on AMIT TV, only thing is that I can't exactly remember if it was on Les Enfants du Rock with Antoine De Caunes in 1984 or if it was on another one. Got to check it!! :thumbsup
PS. It was indeed at the end of the French interview!!!

About Badges, I think it is part of the LoG sessions, first appearing as the B side of PI. Dance EP comes in two versions, one with 3 songs, and one with Badges added. In a way it doesn't quite glue with the rest, it is more of a shuffle than rock and roll, but it was probably put there to satisfy the fans that couldn't find the PI single and wanted everything by their fav band. (Until 1991, the only single B side that was not released in an LP or EP was Eastbound train). Anyway it has a loose feeling and maybe that is why they thought that would go well with the rest.

I found the Notting Hillbillies concert from Birmingham (1998, night 5 from 6) on YouTube. I never saw MK talking, smiling, laughing so much, I think especially on "Rope Stretching". I enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately, I understand not so much of their talk on stage. So I don't really know why they are laughing. That's really too bad. Nevertheless, it was and it is a pleasure to watch this video.  :thumbsup  :)

Bluebird -  It was because of a bad smell on stage and both Mark and Steve were saying it wasn't they who were the guilty one!    Later, at the beginning of K C Moan, Mark was heard to say "It's like being in a lift".     :lol

Saturday Night Live 1990 (ITILYTM and RW)
Glasgow 1990 (incomplete)
Maltings, Snape 1990

and a few radio shows too.  He played FLGH on one and sung it I seem to recall.  I think on acoustic.

I don't think Water of Love has been beaten since the early days.  NHB (1990 version) too slow and later versions a horrible, screeching guitar sound.

The 1999 shows were 6 in total if I'm correct. Not 7.

I must say that these NHB are so entertaining and it has been a real pleasure to see them these past couple of horrible days we had in France!!! It has helped me a lot in the evening to change my mind!!! Although the songs are about the same, it's a different show everytime. So again thanks for AMIT TV!! And for those who had the incredible chance to be there,  I can just say that you were very lucky!!!

That is the first sad news that i've ever heard from Amit Tv. This is a big loss for me, because I've seen so many shows that were new to me. Thanks a lot for your hard work. You gave me a lot of pleasure and good moments, and you managed to excite me in times of no new releases by our beloved artist. I don't think that the system is taking the right direction, otherwise good quality tv station made by true fans wouldn't have to close. Thank you forever. Amit Tv is a legend!

Very well put ds1984.  :clap Copyright laws are in the process of going through their biggest overhaul in history!
Huge international laws firms and agency's are waiting like Cobra's to pounce once they have the legislation being handed to them by corporate governments all over the globe!  :( :'(

I don't get it - which videoes have to be removed? All of them? (Great job, by the way. Lots of obscure gems you've posted there.)

Reply to Stringcheese

We have videos removed almost every week by NEW copyright holders who have bought a stake in one of MK's compositions, or the publishing rights to songs, or the video production companies etc etc.
I was away for 6-days and we have had another Stike against AMIT TV for a video published 3-years ago! One more and we don't exist anymore. Get your self a downloader if you want to save anything while they are there:- http://videodownloader.ummy.net/?

Secret TPP free trade agreements (maybe signed this week) by the pacific rim countries (being pushed by huge US corporations) if they are passed they are about to make every video publisher on the internet liable for their actions.

These petitions are from Australia. So not many will be interested? But if these pass they'll be after every other region IMHO.

Knopfler worked on the JJ Cale tribute album (2015).  I think he's a studio man these days (producing and such).
