At least in Spanish radios, "Redbud Tree" will be aired on July 9th.
On monday we will have the chance to listen to the first single from Privateering.
I hope it will be uploaded to the official site too, as happened with Get Lucky :)

I don't think it will officially be released the next days. It is probably only for radio promo. Remember Border Reiver? That was played on some stations, too, but we never had a "real" release...
But hopefully we will have recording of it soon?

Reply from dutch radio2: Not yet 'arrived' in Holland. When this happens the DJ will listen to the song he said. If it's just as good as Border Reiver, he will certainly play it! He will keep an eye on it.

Edited to add: I'm genuinely excited to hear it too. I generally try to avoid hearing songs from a new MK album before its release but I always like to hear the lead single, just for a taster ;). Hopefully they'll make it available to listen to on MK.com soon.

I found nothing in their site. I hope I'm wrong.
Most of the podcasts are news, interviews, ... but my understanding of croatian is too basic to fully enjoy that kind of programs.
There's some music also, but not the expected time range. :'(

He commented that it sounds a bit like The Mans Too Strong style of song, with a big presence of the Stratocaster, he didnt listened to the Ruth Moody voice, probably because of the quality of the broadcast.
He was listening to that webradio at work so he couldnt recorded it.
I hope someone recorded it :(

We knew that radio was the best radio in the world and a sensible person must have organized himself to record. ::)
Problem is : some people must go to work and will only know tonight when back home if it worked.

Not really a song that grows on you. Loved it from the first listen! Great stuff here, let's hope this is a sign of things to come.
Back to the song itself and MK plays and sings beautifully on it while PF on pedal steel adds something special to the feel of it imo. Can't wait to hear it performed live, perhaps some promo or on the Dylan thing. Now back for another listen! :P

I like the harmonium on it - the song doesn't sound as polished as some Get Lucky tracks or as Restless Farewell for example. On that one Paul Franklin's addition sounds somewhat too much, with a country touch. But on Redbud Tree, Paul Franklin adds the best atmospheric thing as in his best times with Dire Straits or MK solo. Phantastic song really!

After three times listening: I must say that this song is "O.K.". It does not blow me away but the crystal-clear solo guitar raises the level. Maybe we're gonna have a longer version on the album with a nice outro.
So, MK still follows his folky, laid back path that he started after the STP-album. I hope there's more stuff to come that would be more agressive, fresher and rockier.

I have similar feeling, BUT... remember Kill to get crimson? The first single was True love will never fade and it turned to be one of the least good songs from the album... :)

That was my feeling... Redbud Tree sounds kind of "Time in the sun" to me. Like a not very evolved song, like a demo with not much work on it.
But I like it.
It has also some parts that remind me about Remembrance Day.

I think there is much more to come when we hear the official version. I hope I'm correct, or else it doesn't seem a complete song imo. I like it a lot otherwise. :)

You're right.
I's obvious the last part of the song was edited and I have great hopes for a wonderful extended live version but I never thought there was a first part missing.

Seriously though, it is a very short song (lyrically) as it stands and seems to finish a little abruptly. Still love it though!

When I heard Redbud Tree for the first time, I thought this song is very short with something missing : more lyrics and a longer end !
And I see that many others think the same!
I hope the album version will be longer, we still need the tracks' length...

I agree with that it has a little resemblance with Time In The Sun. But while I hate that one, I really love Redbud Tree. So it is obviously about the details.
It is short yes, but it has a total other quality than the three (crap) bonus songs of the Get Lucky box.
I am sure between the first verse and the solo has to be another verse. Maybe Ruth Moody is singing the complete verse (from the point of view of the Lady if there is one...) like Mark did with Van Morrison or James Taylor... I think Guy could really do us the favour and tell us the track lengths....

Having heard the song now I can really say I love it !! Love the sound of both the acoustic guitar and Mark's clean guitar sound. Unlike some other songs (and some people on this forum) this song doesn't have to grow on me, I really liked it from the first time ! ;D

Wow, I found this song in my inbox last night after coming home from a schlager concert - now that was a great surprise! Have listened to it a couple of times now. I love it but my first thought was: Again nothing really new. Instrumentation, sound, melody - all very familiar. And there is that Hank Marvin guitar again, although it doesn't sound that bad like on KTGC where he really really overdid it :o
Now, time to take a closer look on the lyrics.
Very curious to hear the other tunes now, hoping for some little uptempto stuff a la Border Reiver.

In my opinion, this song is between Camerado and How Long... but i would like to hear the full version.
Is it in this song that Ruth Moody is supposed to sing? So her part of the song must have been dropped for the radio edit.

I hate to ask this, as it will appear as though I've only registered for this reason, but I have been reading the forum on an off for several years, and generally just lurk in the background, reading from afar. Does anyone know of a live stream of Redbud Tree? I haven't heard it yet, but you obviously all think it's good!
It really strikes me as amazing that UK radio stations have not been given this to play, when Mark is a UK citizen. And the recording industry wonder why they're having problems.......!

It's a good song , it's really grown on me after a few listens .
I definetely think there are a couple of minutes missing from this version- there's more to it.
I can see , as mentioned earlier little similarities to Camarado and a few others.
So far we've heard 4 songs(3 live albeit) from the album and hopefully most on the new album are of similar quality .

It has a haunting atmosphere similar to Camerado in a way. I really like transition to a major chord in the chorus in place where you would normally expect a minor. Brilliant songwriting again :)

We have another rule in this forum and that is that we are polite to each other. You can disagree but always stay polite.
That's why we make the difference sometimes:
"Can someone PM me" sounds like demanding.
"I heard some of you have this recording, does someone wants to PM to me, it would make me happy" sounds much more friendly and the chance someone actually will send it is much higher.
I hope all the newbees are happy to be here and I hope they will be involved in the discussions over here as well.
I hope everyone now understand it and I hope we will have a lot of great discussion here with all of you.

Just listened via Soundcloud, absolutely brilliant. If the rest of the album is up to the standard of the 4 songs we've already heard then I think this could be one of the best Knopfler /DS releases to date.

Just had a listen and I can honestly say it is such a great song already. Marks vocals just get better and better. We never have to really comment on his songwriting capabilities as it's always of the highest order. Stuck my headphones on and the song really was so awesome. The guitar tone is exquisite and the melody top notch again.... WOW. Can't wait to hear the full song.

Why is the red bud tree called the Judas tree?
The story involves both the dogwood tree and the redbud tree, both of which bloom in Spring right around Easter.
The story goes like this:
The dogwood trees came to Jesus after the resurrection, and made a request - Since the wood that was used to crucify our Lord was from the dogwood, they requested that they no longer grow tall enough or strong enough to be used for timber for this purpose.
The Lord agreed, and since that time, the dogwood has grown short in stature, with small limbs, unsuitable to be used in major lumber projects.
Also, because of the request, the Lord also caused beautiful white crosses to bloom on the tree, with a reddish spot of blood in every bloom, and a tiny crown of thorns at the center of the blossom.
The redbud trees came and asked the Lord a favor as well. Since the great traitor Judas Iscariot had hung himself on this tree, they asked the Lord to ensure that never happened again.
The Lord agreed. Henceforth, all redbud trees have grown short in stature, with limbs thin and low to the ground, unsuitable for hangings.
Also, because of the request, the Lord also caused crimson blooms to burst out along the branches like rivulets of blood, to remind one of the blood Christ shed for the sins of the world, and the innocent blood betrayed by Judas. And the leaves henceforth would grow in the shape of hearts, to remind all who look of the endless and boundless love of God for our lost race.

I don't see the point this way. When we listen this sample is okey, it's not illegal or something but when the other ones listen the song it's forbidden, disrespect, illegal.... Remember we are not the only ones who love MK. Even most of the fans don't know this site. Thanks for sharing and effort but we don't have the copyrights this song, you know it's not us.

It's not illegal to listen, but it's an official recording (edited recording). Our policy is not to upload official stuff, because of the reason that we don't have the copyrights , by the way if you do it it will be banned from a lot of sites like youtube. I think for all fans it's a good way too spread it this way. People will find their way to here. Everyone can enjoy listening and the people who make the effort to sign in here must be the fans who also buy the CD.

From my view we listen the sample and they listen the sample. I don't upload the songs to youtube or somewhere but it's just sample and you'll find it everywhere within a couple of days ;so it's not a big deal and disrespect for the one who sharing it for us thankfully.

It has a haunting atmosphere similar to Camerado in a way. I really like transition to a major chord in the chorus in place where you would normally expect a minor. Brilliant songwriting again :)
I really agree! I love that haunting atmosphere Mark has created in the wonderful Redbud Tree, in the same way he did in Camerado... The guitarplaying reminds me of his earliest days, and the lyrics, when you think about the story behind, is, as always, stunning. I love this kind of songwriting, when it's based on stories and characters, because Mark manage to recreate the feeling and atmosphere. I'd say the guitar solo is quite "long" compared to what we have had on the last records, which of course is great. Whether the original song is longer or not is hard to say, but it feels a bit short. Only one and a half verse, no bridge and no outro solo. It could go on for a couple of minutes I suppose... However, if that is the case, I got to say that I really don't see the point in, or like, radio edits. It's like a TV channel only screening the first 2/3 of a movie, or a gallery presenting only half of da Vinci's Mona Lisa. That never happens... Music is art, and I believe that a song has a beginning and and end for a reason. You can't just take out a verse or a solo, just to play commercials instead. It's not fair against the artist... The again, radio edit or not, I love Redbud Tree, and I've got to say that this is very promising for what we will get in September, not to say live in 2013 8)

Yes, I've read somewere about his inspiration from books reading.
For example, from wikipedia:

Just had a listen and I can honestly say it is such a great song already. Marks vocals just get better and better. We never have to really comment on his songwriting capabilities as it's always of the highest order. Stuck my headphones on and the song really was so awesome. The guitar tone is exquisite and the melody top notch again.... WOW. Can't wait to hear the full song.
I did the same thing several times today and love it more and more. I think my first idea (about a slave hunted down) is wrong - I go now for the idea that it might be a song about desertion from a civil war soldier who manages to hide under the Redbud Tree...
I imagined the scenery pretty clear, which is obviously a big compliment for these lyrics, when they are able to get my imagination going... ;D The first verse is probably set in nighttime when it's dark (footsteps pass). Then the second verse (which we will get most probably with the album version! ;D ;D) will start with the sunset of the new morning, when THE lady finds and saves him and takes him with her to her house...

It is supposed to be aired on european radios from today, at least that stands for Spain. Norway and Croatia are airing the song from last week, so I guess is question of time that all the european radios do it.
Universal Spain used to follow instructions from the central, so if it was approved to be aired from today in Spain, it must be the same for all Europe.

Spotify is programmed (unless you undo that) to search your hard disk for songs and include them in the player, as it was Itunes...

The very first recording was in a middle of a radio program and there was some edition to get the song only.
That's the reason why it was named "edit".

listened to the complete Privateering album.

It seemed to me Leo was much more impressed when he came back as he was before about the idea to just fly to London and interview MK - it seems for him it was "just another job", and now he has learned that MK indeed is not just another rock star but something special... Funny how everybody really mentions how humble and modest he is...
And about Leo's album judgement, I also thought he has the view of the "common public listener" with the usual reservations. "Fan boys" (and girls) like us would probably have another, more detailled view after a first listen...

I think it will be leaked late July. Someone always leaks it.
I know there are others that will not want to listen to it until the album's released, but if it was available , i would probably listen to it. We are different ,we will buy the album whether we get it early or not.(i,ve had all the albums since STP early)
I,ve been a fan for over 25yrs, since i was in my early teens ,seen DS,NHB and MK over 20 times, met him a couple of times etc. But still get excited when a new album's on the horizon.
So far the signs look good for this album.

With the potencial leakage, the same for me, I would surely listen to it, although I am even considering about buying the box set at the moment (still very amused by vision of mini van or mini dog ;D ) ...I am sure it will be great album and I am really looking forward to see the tour dates.

I mean, the fact that the fans would acces to a pre-release, a leak or something similar, its ilegal, it is, but it doesnt have any negative effect because we are all going to buy the record. The only effect would be that the fans that cant wait, will have the chance to listen to it before... and on release date will go and buy it.
If the point is that if its available online before release, people wont buy it, thats wrong. The people that is not going to buy it wont do it anyway, no matter if the cd is leaked or not. When its released they will manage to obtain an illegal copy in one way or the other, but the point here is that they are not potential buyers anyway.
People who is interested in buy records, will do it anyway, and we are fans, to us, buying it is MANDATORY...
That makes me recall about the GL incident where the people from mk.com put all the record online. Well, it was a mistake, but it didnt affected the sales, people who go to their site are fans, and all of them bought the record for sure.
Its not that I encourage piracy (I dont), is that many people are very wrong about many concepts around it.

And they never will... they dont have the iconic culture that we have about vinyls, cds etc etc, they dont care about covers, booklets etc etc because that generation grew up downloading mp3s...
It doesnt matter how much the record companies try to control it, they will find the way. Actually you can find everything in the net despite all the millions spent by the record companies during so much years in anticopy systems.
The only success was to achieve that many people consider that pay for downloads in Itunes, for example, is fine, even is not, if you pay 0'99 per song, for a 16 songs cd you are paying 16 dollars / euros etc for a mp3 file, while probably the physical cd price is less, and you get much more... And the funny thing is that the distribution of a physical cd is far expensive than a mp3...

Come on guys, we're not all that way! It's true that we download stuff online, but hey that's how I found DS,MK and many other great artists from the past. Now why do you think we're staying here day and night? Just to see what's in the box set! Personally I've traveled a really long way and spend quite a lot just to see a show from Mark! And I'm the happiest man alive now when I know that my favorite artist is going to release a new double album. Will I download the album if it leaks? Probably not. I didn't do it when GL leaked and I had waited 2 years for it. I waited and waited until I got the CD right in my hand, and then I played it. You surely know how this feels because you experienced it a lot during the pre-internet time, but I didn't, and it was really great. Now for as long as Mark breathes and makes music I'm going to buy anything he releases.

The mix on AMIT is great, people from many different countries come here to talk about MK and I think that is great. I realise I want to share my 'rare' stuff with you:
plectrums + drumsticks from 2001, photo+autograph from 2003, drumsticks from 2005, Mark pointing at me in Rotterdam 2005 after my second show in a row(did he recognice me?)(there's a picture of it, I believe it was taken by Henk Pestman, but I'm not sure)had a glimpse of him at a tour at the RAH back in 2010.
Great feeling returns when writing this! ;D

The person who wrote about the single's lenght didn't say he had heard or have the record. He only said that the single's lenght is the same in the album.
I won't asking anything else about it, I know him from long ago, and if he says that, I believe it 110 %, is totally reliable.

I know that promo copies were sent to radios, but dont know if cdr with plain paper or standard promo copies with cover etc etc.

I did send an e-mail to universal in Holland but I didn't get any answer yet. If every site says promo, than the 'real' version must be longer I think?

I must say i am really enjoying this MK era rather than the big mega stadium days of OES - even the first couple of albums with SOS, DTTWL, TOL etc - the sound although different is no less pleasing. Its just the right music MK should be creating at this time in his career.
There is no doubt he is getting a better songwriter as each album passes...and the electric guitar although not as prominent as in earlier albums still makes its presence felt - you just know its a MK record and sound.
A double album this time around is a nice touch so yeah - roll on September and Roll on the tour next year! Ill be there and cant wait to absorb myself in the new album.
MK voice - 10/10 - (albeit the quaility of these internet sites isnt 100%) - Guitar Playing - effortless and songwriting - perfect!

I don't think in term of "best song" because Mark simply did not select the best song of the GL album for the 2010 tour.
That said to date Redbud Tree is the best I heard from the next album, what I heard in 2011 left me with cold feet.
So I just find Redbud Tree being in the same vein as GL (the song).
And by experience sometime it is quite difficult to succeed to be able to get some of the song live: GL in 2010, Postcard in 2008, Our Shangri-La in 2005... Since 2001 I attend at least 10 shows on the european leg so I was lucky to be able to get all these at least once but next time I may not be able to do that much and I know that this will be utterly frustrating to hear that he played this or that and not to be there (such as on the early part of the 2010 US leg).

My sentiments exactly. That guitar solo has SO much potential....think of Hills Farmer Blues! The album version also felt lacking; sort of an appetizer for a live version. I don't know about you guys, but that song live had be literally jumping out of my seat!! Same with this song I hope.

During the last days I changed my mind: First I thought that this song is incomplete indeed, buy now I have come to the conclusion that this guitar solo is such a very important part of it, that it might replace another verse (if you know what I mean). It is not just the middle part that divides the two verses, it is an intregal part of the story. We use to expect a guitar solo just for a usual ingredient, ("does it have a solo? Cooool!)" But Mark always said that a solo or even guitar parts have to be there only when they fit to the song(writing). So what if the main part of the story is said with this solo?
And about the meaning of the song: Redbud Tree seems to have the same meaning as Six Blade Knife, it can indeed be or do anything to do, anything you want it to. Redbud Tree could also be a song about a guitar (REDbud Tree - well...) or songwriting and how the songs used to push or HUNT him in his early days and that they HAD to be uttered and that the guitar saved his life in a certain way... There are the "twiddly bits" in that solo ... The only word that disturbs me here is "certain death"...

As much as I hoped that the song would be longer, I do feel that the story is complete. The shelter of the tree saves his life and he will always be indebted. Simple, powerful, beautiful......MK at his best :P

I thought this would be like one of the duets on ATTR, where they would sing different parts and harmonies, but I can't hear her at all. She's definitely there - I can hear her in the chorus.

Nope, Pixel, that's done. ;) We have had this discussion during the last three weeks at several "Privateering" threads, but the offical streaming on MKNews showed us that the song is complete. Also the lyrics that are now online show that, too. I also hoped for a longer version the first few days but I am happy now with this song.

It is not a but album, in fact on one song, it sounds as if robbie is trying to imitate MK. But not their best really. I understand that the sound is very distant to MK's, and so were most of his 80ies contributions.
