Title: Dire Straits tribute bands - "Oke" or "making money out of a good thing" ?
Post by: Andrew on July 20, 2012, 10:47:06 AM

I'm in it just for fun (Straits 78) , playing only the songs from the first two albums, just because of it  :)
Trying to get close to the sound of the earlier days (not realy succeeding i know)  :(
As a guitarist i still think this sound is nevever equaled, not even by MK himself.
I know studio engineering had a big influence on that sound.
I like to play lots of music mostly as well (blues, funk, rock etc.)

But how about those touring Dire Straits bands?
I'm not realy a fan of most of those because of the 'wannabe" Knopflers or "money making circusses"
Especialy when former original members team up (without Mark Knopfler) like "The Straits"
John Illsley's efforts of trying to do this himself i think is better not done.
I think it's kinda sad realy.
Oke shoot (me)  ;D but what do you think?

As far as its legal, its ok for me.

I dont like John Illsley playing DS songs as they dont sound well, but he was part of the band, so, its ok for me.

The Straits play that songs very well although they dont have MK, but their singer does the job quite well, at least two of them were part of the band, so its ok for me.

As long as DS is not playing anymore, any member (MK, JI, Straits etc) playing the tunes for the fans that want to listen it, its ok for me.

I don't mind. Last time DS performed together in public is so long ago.
