I spoke to my brother the other day about MK joining BD on tour and he was shocked he was playing second fiddle to him. He hates MK with a passion but realises that he is the lesser of two evils. I really think MK is a pleb for doing this tour with BD.

Mk did not join. Songs played were: privateering, stp, and something with "man down" ;)
Got the info from an avid bd fan who is at least nice enough to give me these bitties. H simply does not know most mk songs. He is out there video taping though, so the moment mk joins bd we'll have good proof ;)

Mark sounds good, yes. But while I don't mind this being the only Straits song, I don't quite understand how Guy Fletcher can still play these synth sounds. They're particularly awful on this song, like strait from 1986. Arrrghhh ... ::)

"i used to could" is amazing live. could be from "Alchemy". Very fresh, better on the album, as always: on stage the MK Sound is rockier. And i like the drums of Ian.

Hope the song stays in the 2013 list.

Looking forward to hear the live guitar on "Yon two Crows"  ;)

It has a bit of the spirit of "Two Young Lovers" with harmonica instead of sax....I thought MK said that the extended dance play EP was a mistake ? ;)

Hi Arabia!   Nice to see you back for another few weeks of friendly banter!   ;D

I'm not aware that a member from AMIT is at either of the two Canadian concerts and presumably those MK fans who are there have not heard of AMIT to report the info.   There are, however, people from ER at the concerts, who do have the information and it would be nice if they would post BOTH setlists - it would be a mark of goodwill, after all AMIT posted both setlists when the concerts were in Europe!   :)

Mk fans base is more European than American, while Krusty fan base is more American, and they travel all around the world following their Mesiah...

Mk is a normal human being, so no Mesiah to follow...

I think it is honest to admit that AMIT is more known among Europeans - whereas the US and Canadian fans obviously used to meet at the now closed MK.com "red" forum. Some members came over to us, but I guess most of the US attendant have never heard of this forum.

Pottel did his best to chart up who goes where, but there are a lot of shows that are not visited by any known AMITer.

LOL.I have yet to see a messiah post at ER but I've only been there 6 years.

I think Dylan's fan base is more European than North American, but perhaps there are still more Bob than Baldy fans in the US. ;D

I personally am interested in seeing if and when Mark and Bob play together, I have little interest in either's set lists as they both seem rather static once a tour begins.

I think it's a showcase for Jim.  If anything it's Marks playing that's annoying;  just playing the same lick over and over again.  Dull and unimaginative.

I think his voice sounds more as from the last show of the tour and not from the first. This is probably the first song that gets ditched...

We will see shrinking this part of new songs from 7 to 3 or 4 for sure. It has happened on almost every tour - starting very fresh, and ending up with the same "usual suspects"...

That's the way it is Jbaent, we want him to change setlists and if he does it's not ok either.
But try to come to Amsterdam too! Maybe!! I have a ticket left, not 100% sure now. But I ordered 6 myself and 4 with a friend, and it could be that only 9 will be used. So I can put you as a reserve if you want.

I don't like "I'm The Fool" either and it is usually a skipper for me - any of the other songs would be fine!

I also don't want to hear STP again, if it replaces "Two Yon Crows" - I would be very disappointed!

Glad to see many people are happy with the setlist changes but I'm not at all.  ;D

This is the worst setlist since the MK&EH boring tour. If he removes CMG, Redbud Tree and Marbletown there's nothing left.
I don't mind if he plays I'm the fool or DWB or even R&J but come on, this can't be against CBC, YTC and HFB !  :thumbsdown

Same feeling as jbaent.
I was working on extending my tour plans.  No way !
They can't ask people to spend a few hundred euros per show and remove the best tracks out of the setlist.
I'm glad I eventually didn't go to Canada : the setlist is awful and MK doesn't play with his Bobness   :think

I think it's important to remember that we want the set lists to change. And that means some of us will like what's being played one day, and that we might not like it the next day. We should be happy that they are changing it :)

I think it is fine to change the setlist, but this is really step back. HOW can he still enjoy Done With Bonaparte? And SFSL? I am the fool is, sorry, musically very boring song in my opinion. STP and Marbletown are overplayed... And Marbletown as a closing song, no encore...

Maybe, Mark doesn

I don't like "I'm The Fool" either and it is usually a skipper for me - any of the other songs would be fine!

I also don't want to hear STP again, if it replaces "Two Yon Crows" - I would be very disappointed!

Totally agree.  Crows was the only song on the first night that made me excited and now it's dropped for the very song I was glad wasn't played!

It's maybe funny to see " I'm The Fool " at the list, but it's not one of the highlights at the GH record.....

If Mark plays I'm the Fool live like he did in 1996, with some wonderful guitar playing, I would love to hear it next year :) As for Corned Beef City, I would rather hear I'm the Fool. Corned Beef is new and up-tempo, yes, but I think it is more boring. It lacks melody in my ears... Having said that, Mark's choice of songs on stage will always be a mystery.

Great setlist! I guess it refects MK's taste in music. By the way: I find Crows and Corned Beef boring and dont't agree that they sound like DS at all (What It Is sounds like a DS song though). I'm the fool? Great! No enchore? Guess they ran out og time. No guitar? You are wrong! Loads of guitar on each song. And I don't understand why it's so important to vary the setlist all the time. I guess most fans don't care. MK would never play songs over and over again if he didn't enjoy it. (I just needed to balance things a bit here) ;)

Do you mean Mark's boring songs or Bob's?    There are many reasons for half capacity - too big a venue booked, BD fans didn't enter 'til Bob came on or not many Knopfler fans in that region!   It is Bob's tour, as Guy keeps telling us, so maybe that is the reason for the apparent apathy!  By all accounts, it was Mark and the band who stole the show, not Bob!

Yes, that was a bit concerning to hear that.  Let's just hope it was a one off because it can't be good to play to half full venues.

Perhaps these double-bill shows don't appeal quite so much and people would rather hear their own man for a full gig than a shorter set.  I think that's pretty obvious for us here but most people going to be attracted to these concerts are those wanting to see two musical legends in one show and not necessarily fans of either artist.  That's it.  The rest made up of hard-core fans of both.

If the former don't think the ticket is worth the money, then they will be playing to empty halls...

Just a remark :
The tour that almost all fans call the best tour ever is the one with NO setlist changes :
The LOG tour : apart one song dropped, it was the same songs, in the same order with exactly same solos each night, and I think that most Will agree if I say that it was Mark at his best, don't you think ?

However, I would love if he'd go away from the routine these days

We can't never get satisfied, can't we ? ::)  :hmm

I tend to agree with you that the LOG tour was the best. It really depends on my mood, though, because the great thing with DS/MK is that no tour sounds like the previous one, so you can really pick the one for your mood of the day. It really does not mean that one is better than another (I don't think there ever was a weak tour); it does not mean that the newer, the better. Sometimes old (and therefore small) is beautiful; sometimes recent does not mean overblown and can be very enjoyable too (indeed the OES tour had a lot of qualities despite the well known criticsim of a dead group).  If I want raw, rough, guitar sound a fewer extras, I go for the LoG tour. If I want cheesy 80's sax, overused synth sounds, overdriven-to-death battery sound, and soft overdriven guitar, I go for the BIA tour. I love it too actually :) Both tours are great but different... And if I want really raw rock sound on old songs, I go for the underrated fabulous On Location (some says "Making Movies") tour. Lions & News, Dormund 80 anyone ?

But you are wrong to say that most fans here would, like me and you, rate the LoG tour as "Mark at his best". When I did a poll on the subject, the BIA tour was the clear winner (dmg, are you listening ? ;)). As strange at it may seem, those cheesy 80s sounds have stood the test of time. And it is true that TOL'85 is (a bit) better than TOL'83 (which is fantastic still). But since the more casual and less knowledgeable fans only know about Alchemy, they usually say "Alchemy was MK at his best". Which is not false anyway, I think even dmg can admit that the Alchemy concert is fantastic and that MK was one fire. Especially on Blu Ray ! :)

Oh yes, Mark was on fire that night - no doubt about that.  I would suggest however that by the time the BIA tour came around he had improved as a musician and the energy was still there too.

Actually I have serious doubt that he improved as a musician in only 2 years - I would rather say that he had a deliberate change in style to accomodate the overcomercialized mood of 1985. The changes were more in the arrangements (longer breaks, more overdrive, more digressions on solos, synth sounds...) than musicianship itself. In other words, I'm pretty sure that Mark would have been perfectly capable of doing in '83 what he was doing in '85 - just that he was not in the mood to do that.

And the irony is, I'm pretty sure that if you could ask Mark and get an asnwer, he would probably tell you that he went out of his mind in 85 with this gruelling world tour, that he is ashamed of all these childish breaks and cheesy sounds, and that Alchemy is (a bit) closer to what he feels his music should be now ;) Whether he is right or wrong is of course open for debate ;)

I'm not so sure.  I think he practised a lot in-between and wanted to make sure he played well during the BIA tour due to the sheer success the band was having at that time and the pressure they were under to perform at a high level.  He also had the chance to play with Chet in-between these tours too and maybe a little rubbed off?

Anyway, I enjoy both tours. Two styles, two eras, but Mark's excellence in both cases. I am gald to have Alchemy on BR; I still hope to get Wembley'85 someday as an ideal complement...

On second thoughts: I am not sure if we should believe him, but Mark stated several times that he never anticipated the huge success of the BIA album. If you watch/listen to Mark & Ed interview on Sydney'86, you'll notice that Ed states about the tour that "... it just grew", and that it was not intended to be a huge tour from scratch. It seems that this success caught them by storm and that the pressure only came during the tour... what do you think ?

well I just wanted to say that the gig we ALMOST all say that it's the "best" (me the first   ;D) is a gig which was played in the same way during all the tour : no changes in the setlist, no changes in solos, no changes in arrangements, so the "change setlists" things is not always a quality factor

I think although lot of dates were added (UK december dates e.g.), the tour was always going to be a big one;  the band had been growing and growing since day one.  Even the LOG tour was big but you can tell by the venues chosen even early on in the tour e.g. Wembley Arena in '85 instead of Hammersmith Odeon in '83 that this one was going to be a biggie.

Why last great tour ? The 2005 shangri-la tour feature top class guitar playing IMHO... Listen to TR in Lyon 2005 ! There was a speed drop in 2008, which was offset by increased emotion and clarity. 2010 was better, and 2011/2012 and hopefully 2013 looks like we are almost back to 2005 ! No ? ;)

I often read about the famous TR in Lyon 2005
well I was at this gig, and I don't remember especially some awesome TR this night.
The 96 versions have impressed me much more

the only thing that struck me in 2005 was that he played TR on the red strat ! at first I thought it was the '61 ! and I said OMG !

but it was only the day after I realized that it was (sadly) the sig model...

Just go listen to it ! out-of-this-world end solo ! nothing to envy to '96 versions really.
In 2005 Mark was still able to play fast just like in 96...
The major dropped happened in 2008, improved a bit in 2010, and seems to be almost back to 2005 levels in 2011/12.
If only Mike could go to bed with his flute during some songs... in WII the flute over the guitar is just as irritating as Paul Franklin's pedal steal over TR in '92... out of place...

I think this source for the setlist isn't right:
Only time STP is being played and I'm the Fool  instead of YTC and HFB:hmm
But we'll probably never know for sure

I'm not so sure.  I think he practised a lot in-between and wanted to make sure he played well during the BIA tour due to the sheer success the band was having at that time and the pressure they were under to perform at a high level.  He also had the chance to play with Chet in-between these tours too and maybe a little rubbed off?
On second thoughts: I am not sure if we should believe him, but Mark stated several times that he never anticipated the huge success of the BIA album. If you watch/listen to Mark & Ed interview on Sydney'86, you'll notice that Ed states about the tour that "... it just grew", and that it was not intended to be a huge tour from scratch. It seems that this success caught them by storm and that the pressure only came during the tour... what do you think ?

I think although lot of dates were added (UK december dates e.g.), the tour was always going to be a big one;  the band had been growing and growing since day one.  Even the LOG tour was big but you can tell by the venues chosen even early on in the tour e.g. Wembley Arena in '85 instead of Hammersmith Odeon in '83 that this one was going to be a biggie.

Surely some of them were added due to growing demand but a considerable number, surely had a second reason. Tax exile. I remember reading somewhere that they had to be away from UK, due to tax reasons (a law that gets less from the artists if they are away from homeland) so what a better way to play some concerts while on exile. The album really took off and since they weren't expecting it, they were not legally prepared to avoid heavy taxation and it was the only way.
