Title: Best of 2012 tour
Post by: herlock on November 10, 2012, 01:41:23 PM
Which tracks from which (recorded) show would you include on a "Best of 2012" compilation (I'm trying to make one) ?
As for me, I would take most tracks from Saskatoon, since the performance is very good and the quality of the recording seemed second to none so far; I would add Kingdom of Gold from Grand Prairie (awsome), and maybe take Redbud tree from Regina (more different than the studio version), and maybe WII from Winnipeg (the only one with the drum intro). And Brothers from one of the recent shows...
What do you guys think ?

You guys that have heard most of the shows, what is the best HFB version in your opinion?

Sacramento.  Broomfield is good too.  HFB is a bit hit or miss, with more misses for me, this tour.  Last tour was the best it ever was IMO.

A very good version is the one included in the Privateering Bonus CD; clear, no crowd noise (reharshals !), powerful solo in the end. On CD at last ! too bad WII and MT are not there !

Well... I guess we all have the song we dislike; for you it is Marbletown... for the rest of us, though, Marbletown is a live classic. I remember talking to Isaac when I met him in 2010 and 2011, and he could not have lived without Marbletown... but he disliked Speedway ! yes, Speedway, the one everybody likes !
As for me, it is this bloody Song for Sony Liston; can't see the point, I'm having a bore everytime, people get enthousiasts over the solo but it just sounds boring to me; why could he not ressurect Boom, Like That instead ??

I agree;  BLT would be great and Sonny Liston is played out now.  In saying that, SFSL is better sounding now than ever but I still could do without it and can't help but feel Mark only plays it to please Krusty because it wasn't in his solo set in 2010.

I'd love it if they'd give Silvertown another try.  Revive Junkie Doll too, this time with Jim Cox.  StP was a great album with so many wonderful songs on it with good live potential, Speedway included. ;)

Yes, absolutely. STP could have been a DS album, and with the DS sticker on it, it would have solde triple !
Silvertown is wonderful, I can't understand why this one was not played live, this was the natural candidate (just like Punish the Money or So Far From the Clyde).
Junkie Doll was meant to be a live classic, really too bad it was only played on one tour.
Many people say Speedway is much better live, well, while I love the live versions I think the studio version also has some character of its own...

stp is my fav solo album, but for songs like : what it is, the title track, silvertown, baloney again, the last laugh, sands of Nevada, prairie wedding, let's see you....but speedway hasn't been one of my fav
I find that strat sound fit more to Mark's music, than his overdriven pensa/LP tone

but well, I like hillfarmer blues or 5:15, or trawlerman, or Go love, or scafolder's wife.... though  :)
I also love Boom like that, but maybe more for the rhythms guitars than for the lead one

ok ok ok speedway has some nice feelings....
unlike many people I guess, I prefer the 2001 version with the 3 guitars, and the acoustic section (like on the why aye man maxi)

Yeah, I'm the proud owner of this (rare) fabulous maxi CD, and I like this Speedway very much... still, we wait too much for something big to happen, I still think the 2006 one with Emmylou is the best !

Yes, the 2006 Speedways were terrific but so were some of the ones played last year.  Geneva and Innsbruck are some of the best ever.

The 2001 versions are great too, but very different and difficult to compare.  Remember also the rare early version with double solo's at the end played in Buenos Aires!

Best ever... Despite Mike's flute ?
That's why I think to be lucky enough to have the best version ever on DVD for once (RLRR) : violin but no flute, pure guitar... And blend of male and female voices ! Awesome !

The 2001 tour was not one of my favourites - Mike Henderson's guitar was just too overpowering and I didn't enjoy SAN for the same reason.  The 2010 versions of Speedway are some of the best for me!    Jim ruined the 2011 ones with his plinky-plonky piano in the outro!

ah yes I found it, but did'nt hear so much differences with later versions on the same tour
what do you mean with "double solo" ?
if you mean licks played by Mike Henderson and Richard, these are the riffs played during all the tour, not particulary at this gig.
Or do you you mean Mark's solo was a bit different, a bit longer than usual ?

It's from Buenos Aires 31.03.01 and after the organ solo Mark comes in again for another solo.

Yes, the 2011 versions were great despite Mike's flute.  This is because of the mix and the fact they weren't the Simfy recordings.  I think Jim's organ was great and contributed to the song because he improvised each night with something a little different.

but I must admit that I had to listen to many others versions juet right now for hearing the difference, and verify, because I tought it was always the case on all versions :smack

With all due respect but the recordings I heard so far of 2012 are sonically awful. It's ok to listen to it once, but it's not that I would make a best of from and listen to it over and over again. My audio system is to revealing. And I have such a developed musical hearing that I get annoyed by alot of stuff I hear. Like for example the acoustics of the hall of the Berkley recording sounds horrible. Also I have the feeling the band and Mark are not that well in shape peformance wise at the moment. So for now I stick with the 2010 live recordings of Paris and Nimes. Hopefully some soundboard stuff gets out from the 2013 Tour.

The Berkeley Greek is an outdoor venue, not a hall.

You can't expect the recordings to sound like studio recordings.  The quality of audience recordings from this tour has been excellent by any standard, Berkeley being one of the best.

I don't totally disagree with you though;  I agree about the performances this tour! ;)

Marbletown is my favorite!   On the RPD cd it was not.  But the first time we heard it live, I was practically knocked out of my seat.    Never heard anything like it.   Used to be that I had to hear TR and/or StN, but now--Marbletown.    Especially the extended instrumentation.     btw  Berkeley is an outdoor arena; that seriously affects acoustics.

The SF recordings were probably the worst of the tour.  I guess this is due to the echo in the venue which also was evident in the recordings.  There isn't much to choose between them but the added bass in the 2nd night makes the echo slightly worse, therefore I'll give the nod to the 17th.

Broomfield was great sounding on both nights but the first night was a little clearer, still with powerful bass tones.  Gold medal for the 29th!
