Yes, but Father and Son its played in its entirety, and then linked with Hill farmer blues, so two songs. In the Dark was the night case, its just an intro to Miss you blues, a small slide piece played before the main track.

I only pop in here occasionally now but, having argued for a wider range of songs in concert from Mark, I am delighted to read that he has done just that. I had hoped that he might pick up that approach from "Mr Bob" and, whether "Mr Bob" was the influence or not, Mark seems to have adjusted his approach to song choice in concert and I, for one, am delighted. Maybe Mark's people actually read our prattling here and, once in while, respond. Whatever, "Bravo!".

Regrettably, "Mr Bob", on his current tour, has gone in the opposite direction, limiting his song choice considerably, with minimal variation from show to show. Maybe, he picked that approach up from MK. Who knows?

Whatever my personal feelings on the matter, however, I still defend the performer's right to deliver just what he or she damn well wants.

What if the reason of this, its play a wide range of songs to arrive with that songs well played when he gets to the RAH and then record all nights and in the end release a 2cd record with those songs, leaving out the DS classics, so more space to his solo songs?  :think

It would be a dream if that could happen. And that would be a nice explanation of why the RAH shows can

By the time he will reach the RAH he may change only song from one night to another. We are still quite early on the tour and Mark is experiencing.
The big question is does "SOS" to be dropped for good?
Doing it some nights  and not others may sounds a bit harsh for people that come for the first time are have no luck because they are just there the bad night for them.
I experienced that situation with PONO and TOL and steel feel bad about this over 20 years after!

From the point of view that 99% of the attendance see only one show on the tour, to me a setlist with almost not variation is not a problem.
If we decide to do multiple show it is our business.

This year is a very big gamble...

It's quite funny really;  for years we've wanted change and now we're not happy with it!  It's of course down to the songs he's changing and when we thought about change we assumed it would be the "little" songs for rarities and not the mainstays he's played for ever.  This is just far too radical and when the ultimate is dropped then enough is enough.  I think it's great to see the passion it's stirred up on the forum though - it shows just how much Mark's music means to us all.

I think the setlist will change even more, starting with Amsterdam, when Ruth Moody joins the tour and then in UK, when we will have Nigel Hitchcock.  Then at the RAH - Ruth AND Nigel!   It could get very interesting!    8)

Although it is not usual for Mark to invite the opening artist to duet with him on his set this time is different situation as Ruth Moody sings on the album so I would bet it will happen at least in London.

Absolutely true about everything you said !!  SOS has to stay in the set.  Not for us getalifers, but for the majority of the fans that might have come to see MK for the first time.  Frankly, even for myself, I loveeeee to hear it at every show.  It's a signature song.  Now, I wonder if PC has anything to say about MK's decision to drop SOS at certain cities.  Rememeber, he probably will look at it more from the business prospectives, how the fans will react, future ticket sales etc etc.. ??? Yes, MK can play whatever he wants to play.  I will always respect that side of the argument, but what about the business side of it?  Perhaps, MK doesn't care, since he's not doing it for solely monetary gains, or is he?  I thought about this yesterday. This could fire up a passionate discussions for our beloved MK ??? :)

Some night, some performance of SOS have not been up to the standard it deserve, I have witnessed erratic soloing on it.

But Turino 2013 sounded very good to my ears. False impression or did I get the good spot?
The following night in Milano, Mark encountered something that sounded like a technical problem with one string that prevented him to perform it properly.

Here's me feeling a bit let down because "Mr Bob" has kept to a pretty standard set list for his recent tour and here are some of you, having commented adversely on Mark's repetitious set lists in the past, getting concerned because he fails to play some old "war horse" every night.  These are Mark Knopfler shows, not Dire Straits shows for goodness sake! Get with the programme! Stop living in the past. He's a performing artist. He can't rest on his laurels. He has to change and develop or his artistry will wither - and you don't want that.

"Mr Bob" wrote a 2-verse version of "Blowing In The Wind" in April 1962, added a third verse a little later and recorded the song we know in July 1962. He didn't always perform it in the following period but, with its release on album in May 1963 and with Peter Paul and Mary have a huge hit with it in the summer of 1963, it became, as it were, his signature song and he performed it for a few months. Come 1964, however, it disappeared from his set list and, as far as we know, it wasn't performed at all during the 1964, 1965 or 1966 when he was at the height of his public popularity. Dylan moved on and, whatever the expectations of his audience, he was true to his art. He didn't pander to his audience. You had to keep up with him. That's the way it was and that's the way it should be.

Getting back to Mark, I hope he doesn't repeat the same jokes and between-song banter night after night.

Some days without new songs, "Prairie wedding" was the last.
If we believe that Italian Amiter who listened to the soundchecks, they have still to play "True love will never fade"
I hope they still have some songs to play, waiting for Nigel in the UK  ;D

I love your list ! Both YTC and KOG, all the DS tunes but the disposable SFA, Postcards, SAN,... I would be delighted to get it.
I would add Piper, love it, and Back to Tupelo, I think it was played live better than on the album, I'm surprise that I like to listen to it often now !
To make room for these two, I would remove Gator Blood (not my fave) and Corned Beed City, but that's not going to happen, it is quite sitcky...

They have played 30 different songs now and apparently rehearsed 36.
It is probably safe to assume  RT and TLWNF make it 32/36(after having been soundchecked). So 4 tunes left(if I am correct) :hmm

I'm hoping for : OES, Silvertown and BR make up 3 of the 4 left.

I seriously doubt it though :-\

By the way SFA must be the most underwhelming song MK has performed on his tours for years.....why he persists playing it regular is beyond me  :hmm

I must take my concerns to Guy, I'm sure I'll get a measured, articulate and informative answer(especially if I mention eggs and Range Rovers in the message) :-X...He's good that way.

I think that this "alone in the dark" or whatever it is called does not really count for one song. Maybe F&S does not count either, so potentially you could get 1 or 2 more songs :)
The 3 you mention are a dream... as much as I would love it, I bet more on STP (with sax as), maybe WOL with sax (argh !), WAM (with sax)  and maybe MFN...
BR was a great opener, I'm not sure how it could fit in the setlist as a non-opener as its intro is quite long and would break the rythm... unless it takes the role of the opener again... but I don't think there was ever a DS/MK concert were the opener was changed.. would be a first ! :)
I agree with you on SFA. The only way to turn this little pop tune into a masterpiece is to play first the calypso version as in Sydney'86 ! I love it! and the transition between the calypso part and the normal part is just awesome...

33 likely but 34 would be awesome but would be the biggest surprise.

How long since Mark resurected a DS catalogued song not already performed during the solo years?

Last one I get in mind is Why Worry in 2006 [although was already part of the 1998/1999 NHB gigs], then you have to go back to YLT in 2002 from the  "almost Dire Straits" part.

Noticed this today in Guy's Diary:

" Soundcheck was used practicing a few of the tune we are hoping Ruth Moody may come and join us for tomorrow's Amsterdam show. Of course Ruth will be our support for that show as well as the Royal Albert Hall shows and some of the French gigs."

I am looking forward to Ruth joining the band on stage and hopefully, one of the songs will be Seattle!   Can't wait!    ;D

He said on the radiostation which held the contest that he hoped he would get invited on stage during the gig!
Don't know if this can/will happen and I also have no idea in ehich song he could participate!?

He/she could do Richards old part on IDUAD.  Mark looks almost asleep playing it anyway so maybe this would keep him (and the audience) awake during the pacy foot tapper! ;)

Thank you Nito for this list!  :clap

The man who won the guitar contest and had his jam session with Mark, was on TV Friday. He was able to play about an half hour with Mark. He wasn't a real fan and told Mark was a normal and nice person and he got some tips about how to breath while playing.

I hope we could watch a little part of the jam session, but we didn't. Perhaps TV camera's were not allowed. :smack

That's a bit of a pity;  I'd have liked it to go to a real fan who would perhaps appreciate it a little more, but if he won then I suppose he deserved it.  Thanks for letting us know what happened with that. :thumbsup

I'm about to compile a setlist that i can listen to in my car. I want to have all the songs played (so the setlist looks like the one on the first page here).
But i really don't want to listen to all tracks and then decide which one to take.

What do you think: from which concert should i take What it is, from which one Corned Beef City, and so on...? Where do you think did Mark play the best versions this year? Concerning Kingdom of Gold it's clear to me: Turin! What a song!!!

Maybe this is worth a new sticky topic? I would apreciate it while putting together a best-of setlist for my mp3-player :)

Thanks in advance!

I would use Istanbul as a base for your list, this concert is stunning. Special mentions to WII, SOS and TR - all energetic and well recorded. Some say Sofia is the best, it is quite good but I still prefer Istanbul.
For YTC I quite like Lubjana - almost as good as Saskatoon.
For KOG, IDUAD, and Seattle, I think Amsterdam with Ruth is a clear choice :)
For RAJ, IUTC and GH you may want to get a UK show with Nigel.
For other songs, I would stay with their first occurence, generally quite good (but I've not listened to the UK ones, and it seems that there is quite a lot of experimentation since the UK, so I may change my mind !).

now that the setlist has settled
this is my view

MK solos inspiration 9/10
Quality of the band 9/10  (10/10 with Danny Cummings)
Songs in the setlist  2/10

I didn't really have the time to follow the tour closely so far, but from what I've seen here and on local-hero.org, these are easily the best MK setlists of all time! I'd never have dreamed that he'd ever play 5.15 AM, or Tupelo again, and I didn't dare to wish for Gator Blood or Seattle. Wow.  :clap

Now if someone could just be so kind and destroy Guy Fletcher's synth pads, my ideal of a perfect MK show might eventually become reality.  :lol

2/10 is outrageous. It would say 6/10 - it could have been a 9, but I can't forgive the drop of YTC, best song on the album, the often drop of Sultans, and the drop of Border Reiver, best opener of all times !
This being said, TR is better than 2008/2010 (still not on par with 96/2001/2005), and this alone makes me happy !

Since "Miss you blues" was played twice, and one of them without "Dark was the night", I think its fair to consider it not as an intro but as a song...

Not so important anymore... They won't reach 35-36 songs... I think it will stuck at 31. No more surprises since quite a long time. (Bremen the last one with Diamond?) Happy to witnessed that one live :)

Actually it was a short intro, it wasn't played as a whole song (father and son is a whole song, maybe a little shorter, but still).
So for me it's a bridge, just playing a little funny and create a bridge. I don't count it as a song.

(....) means first played in city ...
The first 16 are played in Bucharest, so I won't modify, I am lazy, sorry
I added "Dark was the night" as it is kind of mentioned as a song.

01 What it is
02 Corned beef city
03 Privateering
04 Father and son
05 Hill farmer

Good job indeed, this might help into compiling a best of Privateering Tour cd containing all played songs. What im just wondering if PFP is played 'only' 52 times out of 56, in what other song the band was introduced?  DWB?

If I'm correct Mark didn't introduce the band at all during the first 2 concerts and as usual between Sultans and Done With Bonaparte during concert #3 and (I guess, don't have the recording) between Song for Sonny and Done With Bonaparte during concert #4. From then on Postcards was used for the introductions.
