I think that for KOG, Seattle and IDUAD the best versions are to be selected among the ones with Ruth, even though her voice was soft. I personally love the versions from Clermont, but I'm biased ( I was there).
Similarly I think the best versions of IUTC, RAJ, GH and OSL have to be taken from shows with Nigel, although he was also underused I think he brought a lot to the songs. I personally love GH from Newcastle because of the synth intro rather than flute, that is reminiscent of Alchemy.
For DOTDS I think Stuttgart is better than La Halle (more elaborated end solo) and because of Ian's mistake I also want to keep Paraguay from Stuttgart...
Talking about Stuttgart I  am really puzzled that you (dmg) don't rate the show at all... Have you listened to TR end solo ? At the very end you have licks that are not from this world... And Speedway was very powerful !
For YTC I prefer Lubjana to Sofia... Longer end solo !
For SOS I think Instanbul blow them all away - very fresh and energetic.
My opinions are not that definite on other songs, but may I advise you to wait for saint-julien stick before final conclusions - that show was really something !

It's been a disappointed one on this tour but there have been some very nice versions.  Bremen, Helsinki and Bergen spring to mind. :think

You could probably pencil in Dijon for Seattle. Last night with Ruth. Dijon was another great show overall.

Postcards from Zwolle is great, especially when MK presented Ianto as a new God of the drummers Ianto stood up during his intro shuffle, stopped the beat and raised his arms in the air like a God. Very funny moment.

By the way this is a good start for compiling a very best of Privateering tour (5cd? box)

Where is it that after introducing Glenn he starts singing "thnx mr. Bassman" ?
Thought that was funny too. Bad thing is,when listening to all these shows on my iPod, as i have been doing for weeks now, the iPod screen does not show what city it is. ( I play shuffle all the time)

Sonny Liston from Helsinki, very unusual and rough - really cool, but Sonny from Stuttgart is also very good.
So Far Away from Lucca I like very much. Even Telegraph Road from Lucca sounds good to me!  :wave

Telegraph Road from Lucca is one of my favourites, together with those from Liverpool, Carcassonne and RAH 1.  In fact Lucca (live radio broadcast) is in my top five concerts - Liverpool, RAH 1, Carcassonne and Antwerp, being the others.   Obviously, I haven't heard all 70 concerts, so I can only comment on those I either attended, or have heard fully in other ways - stick, broadcast, youtube, downloaded, etc!

I have just finished listening to the Liverpool concert for the zillionth time this morning and it is really a fantastic concert!   :thumbsup

LE - Thanks for drawing my attention to SL Helsinki!   I enjoyed it very much!   :wave

Speaking of Helsinki, I love Mark's vocal on this show especially on Haul Away.

I may have changed my mind on Speedway because Rome had a stunning version and Privateering is always hard to choose because they're all pretty much the same.  Same reason I left out things like Seattle etc.
Title: Re: Best versions from this tour

Privateering from Lucca is especially good. Mark's voice is very different on Privateering, and also the recordings itself sound very different.
Funnily enough, i found out that I do not automatically prefer the Seattle versions with Ruth more, I think Guy is doing a very good job on it, too, for example Liverpool's Seattle is much better than some of Ruth's. But that may refer to Mark's singing at these versions also, so not blame poor sweet Ruth for this alone..

listening to all the Shows at the moment, made it to Bucharest (listening in alphabetical order) and not made up a favorite show, yet...there's great bits in most if not all shows

 Changes every week.
Lucca is definitely top 3 for me.

It is so funny that I thought about Mike McGoldrick going this wonderful intro of Father & Son and starts it so accurate every time at the very second.. but excatly when I thought that I heard the intro of this song from Lucca and how he did mess up it in a way... or maybe the pipes were not ready to .. blow..
but it is still a phantastic show. Privateering the song itself sounds phantastic...

Best Marbletown still Prague for me.

I am aware that we all have positive biases towards concerts we actually attented, but I really do think, like many who also said so (Ingrid, Tunnel85, Poupystar,...) that Saint-Julien was stunning: great atmosphere and energy. It is now my #1 stick: HBF, Speedway and TR are the very best I've heard. Even SFA, which I normally don't like much, is greatly extended and is very rocking. But the highlight to me is Going Home: I thought that I was very lucky to hear sax versions in Cologne and Stuttgart, but now I surprisingly listen to the sax-less Saint-Julien version more... sax is great, but pure guitar is also great, it forces Mark to have more presence, and this version is (almost) reminiscent of the great '96 version... not completely, less power, but still great !

and special for dmg: Marbletown is a bit shorter than average in Saint-Julien, as if to make way for more rocking moments, so this might be the version you want to keep :)

It's a tough question Nababo and that's why I started this "best versions" thread in the first place! ;)

Anyway, some of those already suggested would also be my choices but I would like to add that it all depends on what you are looking for in your concert;  if you must have Sultans, Speedway, GH or PTtE etc.

I agree that Saint-Julien was one of those great gigs and I listened to a couple of tracks from it yesterday.  The band no doubt inspired by the crowd.

London 27.05.13 still stands up there too, includes Sultans and has Nigel and Ruth as guests.

Malaga's very nice too, but if you like Speedway then Rome has the best version ever - so powerful. 8)

Thanks guys for all your answers. I will definetively try to listen to St Julien's, as it was so well recommended by herlock, and Lucca, suggested by Love Expresso. But Pottel and dmg are absolutely right, it's a herculean job to try to define just on concert as the best.

As for Pensaboy question, the song I love to hear live from the last tours is HFB, but you made me think about what I'm really looking for, and I guess is the rockier concert overall, regardless a particular song.

So possibly I'll try to download all the songs that were quoted here. The only one I've heard from head to tail was London, which I've bought the guitar sticker from.

Thanks again

even for the same song, sometimes I like the singing from a gig, the solo from another gig, the band's overall sounding from another gig, the intro from another gig, etc...

for most of songs in DS/MK history, I can't choose a particular version, because I can find parts I love (and some I don't like very much) in several versions.

typical exemple is : you like a version from a particular tour because of the intro arrangement, but you prefer the version from another tour because of the outro.

Then, in the same tour, it's even more difficult to choose....

I often find the best versions of songs are when they have never been played live before. When they reappear on subsequent tours they never sound as fresh to me. Obviously its not the case for all songs and its just my opinion.

Agree, Banjo. Hill Farmer's Blues is a good example - played to death in the meantime... was the best in 2008... the intro of Father & Son is good, but it doesn't make Hill Farmer more intensive or better... I could imagine that many people think the same of Marbletown, but I still do love it... or Speedway, no development... Here we are again at the set-list-theme....

interesting theory.
True that WAM was never played better than in 2002.
Wii was probably best in 2001... Maybe not the case for SAN though.
I prefer BIA, MFN and SFA Versions from the BIA tour. Very rocking
TR was really fresh in '81.
But for Sultans, RAJ, TOL, PI, SR... Later versions were way better than the original !

I must admit that I don't missed Sultans this year anymore because there were hardly three versions I could love... Milan stands out for me but the rest is just not working... Mark missing his cue and rushing with the lyrics, not really good playing my Mark, and Ianto messing up the song with his cymbal-hype... I guess Mark obviously has the same theory than me because he also seemed to like it anymore..  :lol :lol

I want to thank all who posted their favorite versions here, above all dmg for his detailed list. dmg, I bought upon your list/judgment Helsinki, Milan and Rome and I can confirm that the versions you picked are really really beautiful, eg Haul Away+Piper from Helsinki, Cleaning my Gun from Rome, Hill Farmer from Milan. This was of great help and value to me. So thanks a lot!!!

One more question: What is your favorite version of KOG with regard to Mark's singing. I understand that Hamar has the longest solo but is it also the best sung/performed version? (It's the same with Yon two Crows: I prefer the shorter Sofia solo to the longer Lubljana version).

Here is my current playlist on my Iphone. It is highly subjective, as I chose songs from shows I attented every time I could. Nonetheless I find it complete and hard to beat:

- WII, CBC, P, FAS, HFB, GB, SAN, TR, SFA,GH: Saint-Julien (greatest energy of the tour IMHO, and great sax-less version of GH)
- IDUAD, Seattle, KOG: Clermont (for Ruth Moody).
- RAJ, IUTC, SFSL, DOTDS, PFP, MT, OSL, GH: Stuttgart (for wonderful Sax versions with Nigel, and also for the funny mistake by Ianto (SFSL/DOTDS/PFP linking), as well as a super-long but well executed version of MT (which dmg will definitely *not* like :) )
- HA, PTTE: Paris (because it is my home town, I had to put something from Paris, these were the two left, and they are great !)
- YTC: Lubjana (great long version)
- BTT: Newcastle
- MYB: Belgrade
- SOS: Istanbul (very rocking)
- BIA: Lubjana
- PW: Zabrebh (only choice !)
- CMG: Istanbul
- DWB: Belgrade

One Al on Guy's forum recommended Padova as the best show. I wondered how one can be so sure - and I am listening to it right now. It is indeed very good. After reading this thread again, I realized that Rome was the next day - so these two shows seem to be a good choice if one really looks for the best.

It is indeed difficult to choose the best show. Where from? A great version of a favourite song is not automatically making a super show in general. Good sound alone is not the nonplusulta. As the band is ALWAYS the same high quality, it all depends on Mark's mood, voice and inspiration.

At some shows it seems he CANNOT go wrong, totally into it, like in Stuttgart, London or Lucca, but also at some shows his voice really sounds so strained and stressed that it is not really fun to listen to him (will not name any example here). AND: His guitar playing is somewhat rough and hard and so loud, that I found that it is also not always fun to listen to, too. Most of the time when listening to the 2013 shows I find that he really does not sound like a guitar god anymore.. Being aware that this is very heretic, I dare to say that guitar playing seems not to have the highest priority for him anymore. I compared to 2010 shows, and even seated and injured, he played more fluent and with a better touch.. I am not a guitar player on my own and maybe it depends on the mix of the sticks as I found myself really impressed when I was in Bremen and London, but the sticks offer a real loud and sometimes nearly displeasing guitar sound. Richard's solo on 5:15 A.M. from Newcastle for example sounds really great compared to some of Mark's stuff. I don't mean difficult notes or licks or stuff like that, but the sound. Mark Knopfler fans seemed to have liked him all the decades for that special warm and fluid sound. Now he seems to have lost the touch in his fingers, very unsteady in his hammering so to say. Mark seems to do best when playing the Martin acoustics. But getting back to topic, I still think these 2013 shows were really great in terms of band playing, mood and energy and mood by Mark. He seemed to have enjoyed it immensely. And that's the most important thing.
There you have it, kill me!  ;D

I personally found his guitar playing better than in 2010. More dynamic TR solo, especially... maybe not back to 2005 level but more energy and fluency than in 2008/2010.
This being said it's all a matter of taste...

As for the greatest show I stand by my opinion, which is also Poupistar's as expressed on his blog, than Saint-Julien is the one, despite the songs being not Ruth-enabled or Nigel-enhanced. Of course I'm strongly biased because I was there, but believe me, all those who were there felt the same. Top energy from both the band and the crowd !

Stuttgart would be a close second, and best for Nigel-aware songs of course.

I'd have to agree Herlock.  2010 was a low point in Mark's career in as far as his guitar playing was concerned, a notable rise being noticed in 2011 and also in 2013 after a disappointing 2012.

Can't agree about this Stuttgart worship though.  :hmm

Isn't it phantastic that MK can put out 70 shows and here is his heavy fan base, not only discussing it and having different favourites, but there's  also something for everbody! MK really has a lot of ways to make us happy obviously!

This thread is great for giving hints into the right direction. Today I listened a lot to some of the shows I hadn't listened before or was not able to listen to before. Now I must say: Padova is really among the best ones! Phantastic Gator Blood as mentioned, but also really awesome Marbletown! That alone makes it worth listening (!) And I prefer Padova's Speedway over Rome because Mike's flute is much more into the zone, but both versions are pretty much the same phantastic!

Funny news about Stuttgart and the diverse opinions. As Mrs. Val so much loves Liverpool, I gave it a try more than once (you know, you WANT to love it if this Lady says it's great ...  ;) ), and Seattle and Gator Blood from Liverpool are really good!! But over all, Stuttgart I love more. That's just funny. Can't say why, I Used To Could is really powerful (and the dialogue with Richard is great "... everything's too fast for you, Richard".) I compared DOTDS with some of the other versions (YouTube) but from the soundboard, I think the Stuttgart version is really good. When the drums come in, it  has really a Dire Straits feel to it... And I realize that I almost always skip Telegraph Road, so the song that is so significant for so many amiters just gives nothing to me anymore - "almost" in this case means that the Padova version is really exceptional good and comes close to the way I wish it to be played.

So let's dig deeper and deeper into all this stuff. Suggestions and hints always welcome! Who should one ask if not this special bunch of people that knows so much about it all - more than Guy and Mark themselves I would bet!!  :lol :wave

Hi LE!    Yes I do like Liverpool a lot and not just because I was there, but I do have a few reservations!    I absolutely loved being there and it seemed a great show, but when I listened to the stick, I noticed that MK's voice on the first three or four songs came over as rather croaky and strained - something I hadn't noticed at the concert.   However, from Gator Blood onward, this seemed to have disappeared and from then on it is really a great concert to listen to.  Also the chit-chat is amusing to hear!   Something about Guy's very s e x y shirt matching his eyeshadow!   ;D

Highlights are Gator Blood, a very good Sultans, Marbletown, terrific Speedway (far superior to Stuttgart), Marbletown (wonderful everywhere) and one of the best TR's.

However, because of the croaky beginning, it is now sliding down my "best of" list, but probably will be in the top 10!

It's strange how opinions can change after hearing multiple concerts.   I'm thinking specifically about the RAH first night, when lots of us were blown away by what was happening in front of us, me included!   There was such energy and enthusiasm, both on and off stage and then there was that amazing TR - I thought it just couldn't get any better!   After listening to the stick, though, it was a bit disappointing to hear that all the enthusiasm and energy didn't transfer in quite the same way and I was aware that some of the songs didn't sound quite as great as I thought they were at the time.

Now that I have heard other concerts from later in the tour, I realise that I am enjoying some of them much more than the RAH concert, even though I wasn't present at most of them so, sadly, RAH 1 is falling down my list, but the memories of a great evening live on!   :D

Anyway, there's a long way to go yet!    ;D

Agree with all you said, Val! About London - that was pure magic, and Mark was pure aura, and that can't be transfered on such an ordinary thing as a usb-stick...  :lol

I agree, London was magic. The only way to enjoy that is because of your memories, not because you can hear it on the USB

What a great thread ! After reading, I've decided to give a try to RAH and  Stuttgart asap.
My current favs are Caen, Rome and of course the oustanding St Julien.  ;)

I totally agree. For me, in particular, is a very helpful guide from guys who follows MK more than me and knows about music more than me.

You should really listen to Milan, it's certainly in my top 5. Great versions IMHO!:-) Padova is awesome indeed.

:lol :wave

LE

Strange, cause Stuttgart's TR is the best of the tour ;D (no kidding)

someone was talking about paraguay and something mark said during that song in the copenhagen recording.
i can now explicitly confirm that he says "..second banking song.."
also, during telegraph road i hear a giant violin part at 3:40 for a few seconds, very dramatic and grand, cannot remember hearing that in any other performance...anyone?

Neither do I. Wrong date, Pottel, or wrong song? Didn't John McCusker play Cittern during Telegraph Road, same as Mike?

I've been listening to Istanbul a lot these days.  One of my favorites.  Love the energy from the audience.  The set was great still with SOS in it.  :thumbsup :clap.  Postcard was great. Mark and the band sounded very fresh.   :clap

Listened to Sultans from Antwerp a few times now and I must say it's really great - I haven't given too much attention to the complete Antwerp show although I know it is very high rated by many members. But Sultans - flawless - no great surprises, but also no big mistakes, concentrated energy, exactly the way I love this song to be played! Well done, Mark!  ;)

Remembers me that one night before the Antwerp show I was in Bremen, and that Sultans also was great. Live so much better than the recording can tell, funny enough...

If you were in Rome on July 13, you would've had a taste of good ol' arena rock (well, almost)....big crowd, electric atmosphere, and a charged up band. I have listened to 6 different shows (UK and Italy), and Rome still sounds the best, in my humble opinion of course.

TR from Saint-Julien is my ultimate favourite of this tour.
Used to be London 1, but listening to the end solo I find some weaknesses in London that were corrected in Saint-Julien.
Of course I'm biased, I was there, it was my last concert... but everything in Saint-Julien was on fire.
Even the sax-less version of Going Home was more enjoyable that the sax versions with Nigel !!

Song For Sonny Liston & Haul Away from Helsinki are very good, very rough vocals, Sonny rocks.
Speedway from Zwolle still stands out for me, maybe because I've been there, but it's got an energy and I quite like the flute on there.
I even prefer the sax-less version of Going Home from Lucca, definitely because of the energy from that gig.
