Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler to perform at Bridport Arts Centre

Hmm... Interesting one. I'm immediately thinking how it would tie in with any possible tour in N. America at that time. Looks increasingly unlikely or very limited to say the least.
Anyone thinking of going to this or do you need to be a member?
-
US will be end of October so no problem

Right. Must have missed some posts with being on holiday. :smack Thanks Ingrid. :thumbsup
-
Thinking...but it would be a real bugger to get to.
-
mmm...very tempted.... :think

Agreed with Ingrid. Oct it is. ticket price is so inexpensive. A special event like this, Mark answers questions and such. Wow, looks like something not to miss. :wave
-
Definitely tempted. Worth faking a sick day from work!!
Trouble is my brother is getting married on 16 August, so I might miss out on tickets, depending on what time the booking office opens.
I'm guessing it is a fairly small venue and there might not be that many tickets available to "Joe Public" once the members of the Arts Centre have had first refusal.
Still I'll give it a shot!
-
Might be a kinda Hay-on-Wye festival thing.
Hopefully one of you Brits are going and possibly record something?
(as long as MK doesnt start to explain how he wrote R&J again)...
-
We've been away until late today (well, yesterday, now) . Mrs twm will make enquiries tomorrow (later today, really) with a view to going. It's not exactly on our doorstep but it is only in the next county, so fairly "get-at-able" for us. We may have a family event that day but probably in the evening, so that should be OK. Let's hope we can organise something. A day at the seaside even.
-
Woohooo,
Bridport is only down the road from me so Mr & Mrs Knopflerfan WILL be going!!
Anyone else joining us?
(the tickets go on general sale on Weds 14th NOT the 16th!!)
-
As indicated by knopflerfan, tickets are available to Bridport Arts Centre members TODAY. Either the local newspaper got the date wrong or the Arts Centre has changed the date. Either way, you may have to act promptly.
The venue apparently seats fewer than 200 people. I have no idea how well the tickets have sold so far but, if you want to attend, it may be wiser to join and buy your ticket soon (today even?) rather than wait for the general "on-sale" date, which has also moved forward by two days - as stated by knopflerfan
Mrs twm says she has it sorted, so it looks like I will get my trip to the seaside.

That's great that some AMIT folks might be able to go to this event!

As I understand it, you can purchase ahead by taking out annual membership (

I got the information from a Google Alert. You are welcome!

Hi everybody!!
I just want to introduce myself, although it

Welcome in board and I must say that your english is pretty good. Don't worry about that.
-
Ingrid - I have got your ticket ;)
Rest of the forum:
I would suggest that anyone wanting to attend the show to do it NOW!
Having spoken to the lovely lady at Bridport arts centre this morning, she reckons there won't be many left for general sale if any at all!!
Now you will need to buy a membership and that costs
-
Thanks a million Knopflerfan, you have PM
AMIT-ers appear everywhere ;D :thumbsup

Can anybody living in this area recommend where would be the best place to spend the night around the time of the event in Bridport, if one has never been before in this part of England.
Since Bridport is rather small, would you nevertheless recomend to stay the night there or in West Bay? Or would you recomend to stay in Bournemouth or Poole as there would be more to see and visit?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
-
Just to confirm that Bridport Arts Centre seats only 194 people - so the 5 of us are going to certainly have an intimate afternoon with MK!!!

Bridport is a small, quaint little town and there may well be hotels there but certainly at nearby Dorchester or even where we live in Poole/Bournemouth there is plenty of choice. Ask the lovely people at the arts centre if they have any ideas. They are certainly very helpful..
See you there
(I managed to get 3x 5th row seats by the way!!)
-
WOW 5th row, you will have a huge beer from me :D
-
So, let me get this straight. You are all becoming members of an arts centre designed for its local community, just to attend one event, after which you will probably never visit the place again? I'm sorry but I think that's just bonkers. I live only 70 miles away and could quite easily go to this event, but at that distance, Bridport is hardly local to me, so I was certainly not considering membership as a viable option!
-
Maybe it's bonkers, but look at this site:
they have a lot of new members, so extra income this year.
It's a charity event, so they get even more money than they might have expected from the ticketsales only :D
Win-win-situation:
they have the money, we have the event :thumbsup
-
Yes, but next year they will lose these new members and they will be back at square one.
-
Guy will be there :clap
-
Yes, but next year they will lose these new members and they will be back at square one.
Better a onetime gift than nothing at all.
-
I would LOVE to be there, but in the first instance, we will be in between holidays, having just come home from one and shortly to depart on another and there would simply not be enough time to draw breath! Secondly, it would be a long drive from the North of England to Bridport - two nights at a hotel, plus meals and membership/tickets for both of us would make it a very expensive couple of hours! I do, however, wish you a wonderful time and I will be thinking of you all on the 27th and wishing I was there with you! ;)

Hi surferboy, I just booked the Royal Exeter Hotel in Bournemouth for thursday and fridaynight. Total of 100 GBP including breakfast for both nights. Pretty good value I think. Good reviews on booking.com (8.8 out of 10) but probably sold out soon.
I am by car, so about an hour drive to Bridport is no problem for me.
-
A gentleman by the name of Lewis Tregonwell lived with his wife, somewhere between Salisbury and Blandford Forum I believe, but around 200 years ago they took a holiday break down on the coast. They came across an area at the mouth of the River Bourne and liked it so much that they bought land and built a house. That house is now part of the Royal Exeter Hotel. And that was the start of Bourne - mouth.
I only read about that, heard about it on the radio or saw something about it on TV, very recently. Others were instrumental in establishing the place at other times but Tregonwell is regarded as the founder of Bournemouth, I believe, and his house was where it started.
Anyway, the Royal Exeter Hotel sounds a fine place to stay.
-
Thanks TWM, great to know some history of places where I stay :thumbsup
-
Ingrid, just picked the tickets up from the box office so I now have them in my hands now!!! We are away for the weekend so speak on Monday... Ps might be better if I drive you to Bridport - at least I know where to go!! We also have found some lovely lunch potentials too;-)
-
You mean from bournemouth to Bridport? We will see, my car brings me everywhere I want. But if you pass my hotel anyway it is not necessary to bring 2 cars for only 3 people, but if you have to drive extra I will drive myself. I never got lost on this little globe so I think it will not happen this time either ;)
Great, tix in hands feels better than tix waiting for you
-
Your hotel is but 20 mins from home so no problem picking you up and heading to Bridport!! No need to take 2 cars!!;-)
Still cant believe we are seeing the master again and so local too!! (for us that is)
-
Compared to the US this show is local for me too :lol
-
Yes i guess so!! Just to confirm that Guy will be at Bridport too!
-
And now is the question: who else?
-
And now is the question: who else?
perhaps: John Illsley, Terry Williams, Phil Palmer and Alan Clark too??!!
Seriously I believe it will be Simular to Hay-on-Wye with Mark talking with some playing too!! So just MK and Guy I reckon....
-
I think you are right knopflerfan
But hope there are some others too
-
It would be very nice if he runs through Privateering tunes and explains/tells something about it!
-
I reckon he will talk about his whole career with a bit of everything for everyone.... Camera on charge now!!!!!
-
'Camera in charge now'
I love you.. :D
-
Anyone taping?
-
Was thinking about that but don't have equipement.
Maybe twm or knopflerfan have. If not maybe you can send it to me.

Check your sms in five minutes Ingrid
Edit:
I will send my recording equipment to Ingrid, so she can tape it. Then she will send it back to me so I can edit (maybe enlight can do a great job with mastering?)
-
Thank you Ingrid for your very kind offer to take me with you in the car from Bournemouth to Bridport. I'll contact you when I have booked a hotel. Thanks so much!
-
In between Knopflerfan offered to take me from the hotel to Bridport but I suppose an extra person in the car will be no problem. Otherwise I can drive myself. See you

Anyone taping?
Just got tickets and these state that the venue policy is strictly no photgraphy, video or audio recording. Others may be braver than me, but I'm afraid that I would not risk a stealth recording in such a small hall.
-
That's wh they call it stealth my friend ;)
-
I will try to tape it. Maybe women have a little advantage :P
I give it a try anyway
-
:P Yes!!! Thanks, Ingrid!!! 8) :D

That is the policy of generally anywhere these days but that certainly won't stop me from 'accidentally' taking a few photo's if you know what I mean ;)

I will tape, Lars will send me his recorder.

I can recall a taping you did sometime ago! :D
I wish I could come but I don't know HOW I MISSED THE TOPIC :smack :smack :smack !!!!
Btw.... Saving money for next tour :)

Hi ingridswing and knopflerfan! I booked the Royal Exeter, too and it would be nice if you still have a place for me in the car, too. Very much looking forward to seeing Mark again soon. The tour was sooooo good, I'm still dreaming.

I do know what you mean. Just thinking it is a bit more difficult to hide in an audience of a couple of hundred, than it is in an audience of a few thousand. And as my seats are right on the end of a row, I will probably be too easy for security to spot. Still, if I think I can get away with it on the day .......
-
I doubt they will have "security" as such. More likely, it will a couple of the Arts Centre staff, who usually do another job, just keeping an eye on things. Unless MK brings along his own people for that purpose.
I also suspect that the "No photos, no videos and no audio recording" is something that they put on all their tickets whatever the event. I may be wrong but that's what I'd guess.
-
We popped down to Bridport to pick up our tickets today. The show is sold out. The building is a former chapel (Baptist, I guess) but it's been a small theatre for something like 40 years apparently. It'll be the smallest venue most people will have seen MK in - barring Ronnie Scott's perhaps. It is a fairly simple setting (rows of seats on the flat) downstairs, with a wraparound balcony upstairs. The balcony is supported by metal uprights but they're not too thick, so I doubt they'll obstruct the view. I don't know if the balcony will be used for seating.
The town is not large but it has a good lot of shops, many of them independents with a slightly quirky selection. Even those that look quite small from the front can go back a long, long way. It was market day today but, by the time we'd collected the tickets and had our lunch, many of the stallholders were packing up already. All of this is by way of saying that it may be worth getting there early just to have a good look round.
Bridport itself is not by the sea. For that, ou have to go about a mile down the road to West Bay. We did but, being the holiday season, it was packed. We moved on but it looked quite pleasant. I read that this was the setting of the TV drama "Broadchurch" (the one with David Tennant as the all-but-washed-up detective) but. in a flying visit, I didn't really recognise any of the buildings. Again, if you have the time, it may be worth a visit if you're going to the MK appearance.
-
This was a great shop in Bridport:
http://www.snooksthehatters.co.uk/
It looks a really small shop. It isn't. It looks like a shop just for ladies. It isn't. It looks like it's just a hat shop. It isn't that, either. Socks, ties, belts, blazers, pyjamas - all sorts - but their speciality is hats. All types of hat. In the window alone, there were four different types of pith helmet! [Not that I'm the owner of a pith helmet let alone four]. Even members of Madness are said to have bought hats there.
Next door to Snooks is a shop called Frost. It looks like a newsagents and stationers but, inside, it is more than that. Much, much bigger inside than it looks from the outside, it sells all sorts of goods and chattels. Worth a browse.

West Bay was used for the coastal locations in "Broadchurch", but the main buildings (hotel where David Tennant's character stayed, the newspaper office, homes of the local characters) are in Clevedon, a town about 15 miles from Bristol. I believe that the building used as the police station is on the marina in Portishead, also near Bristol.

Yes the venue is a beautiful, quaint place and really can't wait until the 27th now!!
I reckon it's gonna be like our experience at Hay-on-Wye when there was only a small audience..
Certainly worth getting into Bridport mid-morning for a perusal around the lovely shops before grabbing something to eat....
ps: TWM what row are you??

I can't believe I missed this topic... My biggest dream would have come true, if I had seen this news in time. What the hell:(((((
I am even able to organize the trip, but without a ticket it doesn't have any sense.
The hugest fail of this year.
-
It would be nice to receive a scan of the ticket, so it can be added to the tour dates section - " special performances 1997-2013 ":
http://www.oneverybootleg.nl/tourdates_specials.htm
The event is already added at the bottom of this page.
In case anyone would be willing to make a scan of the ticket, that would be much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Jeroen
-
Just wondering, if any of the people going have thought of any questions to ask MK, just in case.
I mean I would love to hear MKs opinion for some new bands, maybe about recordings with artists that never surfaced and if he is having anything in his archives and thinks about releasing, or artists that he would have liked to play with.
-
From the first I heard about this, questions came to my mind. I have a couple that I may or may not ask, depending on how the event unfolds. I'm not going to say what they are now, though. If it seems appropriate to ask them on the day, you'll know. If I don't (and if they are not covered by questions from others), I'll let you know afterwards.

Thanks for the reply twm!

Boring ticket. Pity

"Boring"? What do you expect? Long gone are the days when tickets were decorative and, even back then, many were still quite plain.
-
This has to be a great event with MK. :) Up close and personal. So envious of those who are going. Please report back to us. :wave

I am a sucker for those "special ones"

Thanks very much for the ticket! I will add it soon :)

It should be, but unfortunately due to Mark's desire to be low-key he is totally unknown except to his loyal fans! Say to most people MK and they don't know him until you mention DS.

Well Ingrid has just text me to say the recording equipment didn't arrive in time so I shall have a go at recording the event through my phone - better than nothing I guess...
Camera fully charged too......
Yes interesting isn't it that after all these years some people only know MK by Dire Straits music. :smack :smack :smack
Some are even shocked when I mention he has 7 solo albums available.... :smack

Nowadays, even when I mention "Dire Straits" I get many unaware faces, mostly - of course - from youngsters. After all, it's been quite a while since the last efforts from the band.

I am now in Bournemouth. Tomorrow to Bridport. Unfortunately didn't the recorder arrive in time. Hopefully someone else will tape it or take his recorder so I can tape

no kisses for Ingrid, as she didnt want to be a 'Rudiger'!!! Anyway will post more including a few photos later but the event HAS been recorded by the both of us so watch this space... By the way I opted for a handshake rather than a kiss!!! One very happy knopflerfan as you can imagine

Guy was there but no time for a chat. He left very quick. MK took time to sign stuff, shake hands.
Two ladies asked and got a kiss, as mentioned I didn't want to be a rudiger.

hi folks
I'm happy for you that you have seen Mark play just a few hours ago, I'm really eager to know everything about of today MK'concert......very compliments

Sat in sunny weymouth at the moment showing Ingrid some of our fabulous sites on the South Coast. I honestly think todays show was far, far better than at Hay on Wye... Mark was really talkative and again very humble about himself and the playing was marvellous! Again afterwards he was very sociable and happily signed items for a small number of us!! I still cant believe ive met, shaken hands with & obtained three signatures from my No.1 hero!! Ingrid & Mandy will tell you how happy I am!!! Speakio later... Ps recording has come out well!!
-
I'm very happy for you, Knopflerfan - I know how much it meant to you. :)
-
It was very enjoyable. In fact, I enjoyed it immensely - better than some concerts I've been to. Terrific stuff - and I'm not prone to praise too easily.
It took a short while to really get going. Mark seemed to be largely winging it and was slightly hesitant when answering questions - as though trying to select the right words or phrases. He made reference to people at weddings, not used to public speaking, whose hands shake a little at the start. It it was a bit like that but it soon got going and he relaxed a lot. He began to smile a bit more. Guy was largely there for moral support, I thought, and contributed only a little to the actual proceedings.
The bit about having to play certain sequences of notes in a particular way was fascinating. It is partly because these were just the right ones for the particular song, partly because it is what listeners associate with the song and partly because, having established that, it then gave him freedom to improvise. I have paraphrased him badly but you may get the sense. And he played some sample phrases to demonstrate this.
The questions were pretty good, too (none of the "explain this song to me" type and nobody gushing too much) and he gave them considered answers.
The other members of the little group I was with briefly met Guy beforehand but I was elsewhere and we didn't hang around afterwards.
. And, yes, I did buy more things in T. Snook's wonderful emporium - not a hat [See much earlier posting]
-
Sounded like a fabulous event and I'm so glad that we had members there to really appreciate this (more or less) unique experience. I'm talking here about listening to Sultans being played live! ;D
The Q&A session seems moderately interesting too although I've often thought that I'd be bored by questions from anyone else but the hardcore fans such as ourselves.
Great also that Knopflerfan and Ingrid got to meet the man himself. No one filmed that did they? ;D
-
Only bits and pieces of songs were played, only Local Hero as a whole. MK didn't want pictures, so no film or photo of it. Indeed the part that he showed why BIA only can be done with that start was fascinating.
-

I bet you those two ladies are very very happyyyyyy !!!! And many ladies here are very very envious !!!! ;) Did you get a photo with Mark at least ? I can't wait to hear the recording.
twm, thanks for your detailed reviews also. What sort of questions were asked ? Any that stood out in particular ?

In respect of lyrics, specifically being able to write about almost anything, Mark said that Dylan was his inspiration. In the course of this, he added that he had attended a Dylan concert at Newcastle Odeon when the first half was solo acoustic and the second half was with the band (who later became The Band). That was 21 May 1966, for those of you who like to keep a note of such things. He said the sound in the second half was loud, that some people booed but he thought it was great.
He also made passing references to the two recent tours with Bob Dylan. He said that Bob had asked him if he was going to play a particular song and, when he answered that he would, Dylan was pleased as it was song he played when painting (that's canvases, not walls - though, knowing "Mr Bob", it could be walls, too). Mark didn't specifically identify the song, said he would do so later but didn't. I guess it was one of the songs he excerpted in the course of the event.
-
Thanks twm! When I read stuff like this, I wonder how great it would be to read MK's memoirs.. just imagine what such a Musician's life has had experienced. Which song could it be that Dylan used to paint? I read somewhere that he liked Sonny Liston...

Mrs twm got first dibs at a question and asked why he had become so prolific of late. He answered at some length - [1] he used a laptop, so didn't lose odd bits of potential lyric (which is what happened when he wrote on scraps of paper here and there), [2] when on tour, he tended to move straight on to the new place after a show and had more time to write, [3] he was more mature in his approach to writing and, to paraphrase, more professional in that, when younger, he had a more cavalier approach, not worrying whether a good idea was lost or not. Some time during the event, either in the main part or the Q&A, he said he had up to 80 potential lyrics on his laptop at any one time. [Perhaps others who were there would correct any of this, if I've got it wrong.
I didn't ask the questions I had "up my sleeve" - partly because mrs twm had asked hers and it seemed a bit greedy, as it were, and partly because I had resolved to allow the real MK fans to ask theirs and only to pipe up if the supply of questions ran dry, which didn't happen. My two (unasked) questions were: [1] given you have these songs now, when are we likely to get a Mark Knopfler Bootleg Series release, and, [2] since you've played with all these musicians you admire, and whose work you admire, why haven't you ever released a "covers" album in your own name?
-
I would love to get a bootleg series, but without being cynical, I'm afraid that the only time there will be a chance to get one, will be after Mark's death
-
Mark said that his wife had once won The Bridport Prize ...
http://www.bridportprize.org.uk/content/2011-winners
... and that he had come to the town, presumably to accompany her, and was impressed by the aims and objectives of Bridport Arts Centre and was pleased to help with this fundraiser. [Again, this is from memory, so I may not have got the wording or sentiment precisely right
-
Well, now back at home after an outstanding day!! The highlight for me was of course meeting Mark!! But what an experience it was generally not unlike Hay-On-Wye but far, far better....
I wouldn't say it was better than a concert because this was purely an intimate 1hr 30mins with personally my No.1 musician!!
Now the recording has been converted to an MP3 File but I need to improve it and am wondering if anyone can do it for me as I haven't got time at the mo....

My now treasured MK Signed 'MK - Strat' hang-tags!!

MK at Bridport before and after Signing...
(Mrs Knopflerfan took the piccie of Mark walking to meet us but he wasn't happy to have photo's taken while he was signing so we respected that.)
-
:D Wow!!! :D
Thanks so much, Knopflerfan and twm, for sharing details of the event!! Sounds like it was an amazing day!!!
And many thanks, Knopflerfan, for posting the pics!! VERY happy for you and Ingrid that you could meet MK, and get the tags and tickets signed... :D Wooohooo!!! :clap
-
Meeting him was a dream come true!!
When I passed him the MK Strat 'Hang-Tags' I told him that I had three of your wonderful Strats to which he smiled and replied 'Thankyou'
after he signed them all he shook my hand and wished me 'all the best' - Top Man!!
I was for the rest of the day, and still am on such a high!!!! Ingrid will tell you...
-
By the way thanks Ingrid for making a wonderful day and sincerely hope you enjoyed your day with us!! We enjoyed your company.... ;)
-
wow, can't believe I had missed this until I saw Ingrid's ticket in facebook today :hmm
-
Thanks for keeping us up to date.
-
Hey knopflerfan, is your Recording lossy to begin with? If not, pls do not convert to mp3?
-
Thanks for the photos Knopflerfan! :)
-
Recording is fine through my phone but on my audio equipment the volume needs turning up more than normal..... Have a copy in mp3 and 3.g?? file
I really love the little bit where Mark is concentrating on breaking down parts on BIA and showing how the majority of the tune is improvised... Then the highlight for me was starting BIA with the MK Strat!!! So a nice twangy start instead - MK wasnt keen on it but he was showing us how the guitars fit into tunes/songs.. Fascinating.... And yes Im still high as a kite!!!!
-
.... And yes Im still high as a kite!!!!
Give it another 6 weeks, at least, Knopflerfan! ;D

And, I should have said: Mark kept referring to Guy as "Guy-us" - to rhyme with Caius, for those of a literary or classical bent.
-
And, I should have said: Mark kept referring to Guy as "Guy-us" - to rhyme with Caius, for those of a literary or classical bent.
Love those little details! Make us feel like we missed absolutely nothing of the event. :thumbsup

And, I should have said: Mark kept referring to Guy as "Guy-us" - to rhyme with Caius, for those of a literary or classical bent.
I'm actually wondering if Mark calls Guy - 'Gaius' as in the character from the wonderful BBC series Merlin played by the wonderful actor Richard Wilson...
Look at the resembelance between Gaius and Guyt and also Gaius' character was the royal physican at the court of king Uther Pendragon of Camelot not unlike Guy!!! ;)
http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0106369/
-
I don't bee-leeve it! :lol
-
No, it is for another reason, to do with his email addy, my guess
-
Guy is such an old name (Guy of Gisborne anyone?) that a well-read person like Mark must say "Guyus" - the latin variant so to say. He also says "Guy" (Gee) when in France, calls Richard Rocking Ricardo, says Jimbo to Jim Cox, Matty to Matt Rollings and so on.. It did not take long that Ian Thomas became Ianto, didn't it? I am sure that was Mark's idea, too. it all started with the 96ers, in early DS days he was not relaxed enough to do it. I don't think Guyus has any other meaning than just one syllable more. What other nickname would you give a person called Guy?
LE
-
Caius (Norbanus Sorex) was a theater actor, who played the second fiddle in the performances.
-
The "Caius" in Caius College at Cambridge University rhymes with "keys", so it is pronounced "Kees College". Its full name is Gonville and Caius College but it is usually just referred to simply as "Caius" (or rather, as "Kees"). And it was named after John Caius, who was actually born John Kays.
Things in life can be unnecessarily complicated at times.
-
he also calls him Gee with a hard G.
-
Knopflerfan, so glad for you that your dream of meeting had come true. :clap :clap :thumbsup I'm still dreaming my dream, like countless others. Lucky you !!!!!! and very happy for you and Ingrid. :wave
-
Such golden opportunity and no one asked about Tunnel of love?? :smack

Thank you knopfler fan and twm! (and your better halfs! ;-) )
Too bad twm didn't ask the bootleg series question, even though either answer would rather have no meaning. ;-)

Indeed! And Sultans!!! :smack :smack

Ask what? :o

Thanks everyone for all your lovely words with regards meeting the man himself - yes still can't believe it!!! It was unbelievable to say the least and I hope some if not all of you will experience it one day.. MK did not rush either and gave each one if us time. I guess there were 10 of us all told and Ingrid and I were 4th in queue..... He did look espeically pleased to see the Fender MK tags and gave me a smile. Meeting MK - priceless!!
Now with regards to a question about Tunnel of Love, I would personally say thankyou for not playing it and Sultans - I got the impression you will not hear that as much just like on the last tour... Far better tunes available ne thinks. I personally feel Mark has far better tunes/songs available and its time to move on....
-
....and Sultans - I got the impression you will not hear that as much just like on the last tour... Far better tunes available ne thinks. I personally feel Mark has far better tunes/songs available and its time to move on....
Totally agree, Knopflerfan! At first, I admit that I was disappointed that SOS wasn't being played, but as the tour progressed I really didn't miss it at all and enjoyed other songs, such as the wonderful Gator Blood much more.
I have made a little compilation of lesser heard songs on the tour, including Miss You Blues, Dream of the Drowned Submariner, Back to Tupelo, 5.15am, Yon Two Crows and a few others and I realise I like them just as much as I liked SOS, but in a different way- especially BTT - MK's guitar is so beautiful! These are also really good songs for winding-down at the end of the day! :)
Regarding TOL. I would prefer to remember it as it was played in '85, because if it was played again today, I have a feeling it might be a great disappointment - best leave it where it is, a beautiful memory! ;)

That just about sums up a lot of Mark's work these days. You summed it up well Val. :clap

A good pair of citterns would do the trick, as with TR...
The line "citterns burning up above" has a welcoming sense of permanency to it regarding any further use of them! ;D
-
Audio recording recieved from Ingrid (thankyou ;))
Another interesting comment from Mark on Friday when asked about the great Chet Atkins was that Chet would at times visit 'Dire Straits' while they were recording and one time Mark asked what Chet thought of this particular time to which he replied 'I like what you are trying to achieve'!!!!
I reckon Chet would be very pleased and proud of his fellow 'finger-picker' with what he HAS achieved to date!!
-
I predicted it would happen and it has!! The lady in front of me who got a kiss from MK had 'twisting by the pool' and 'So far away' both signed by the man himself and they are indeed up for sale in ebay.co.uk for anyone wanting a 'genuine' MK signature... Actually find it sad that people obtain signatured fir money.... I will never ever sell my now 'endorsed' MK Stratocaster's!!! Well I think everyone knows that!!
-
You indeed predicted it immediately :clap
Stupid people :disbelief
I would never buy a signature, that's worth nothing, only when I get it myself it's valueable for me.
And I also would never sell it.
-
Ingrid,
Your recording is fabulous!! The sound quality although you have to put it up a little more than normal is brilliant and it has brought back happy memories of a special afternoon with MK!!
Not sure it needs 'Improving' as it captures the atmosphere of the little show really well - well done!!
If Ingrid is happy, anyone who would like a copy please email me and I will attach it to your email.....
PS: No way in the world would I now purchase another MK Signature, except of course on an official TOUR Lithograph....
-
Obtaining autographs only to sell them straightaway puts artists and performers off signing autographs in the first place. The "signer" realises that the "obtainer" was not genuine in the request and in whatever comments of praise or thanks were offered in exchange for the autograph. And then tends to think of all such requests as being opportunistic rather than genuine. I know it isn't true but how can the "signer" distinguish between the genuine and the opportunistic request?
I do not go in for eBay very much at all but, if the facility is still there, you can contact the seller with "questions". If you are so inclined, you have the opportunity to tell the seller what you think of what they have done.
As for Telegraph Road, songs evolve. Performers develop. Mere repetition becomes a music hall act (who said that?). The performer cannot become bogged down in past triumphs. The artist must believe that the best is yet to come. Enjoy the past, by all means, but be open to the "now".
DOWNBEAT jazz magazine used to run a column called "Old wine, new bottles" (or something like that) which isn't quite the same thing but does give some idea of how I feel. Mr Bob's latest BOOTLEG SERIES release has given a different perspective on his 1970s recordings - again, not quite the same thing, but you can open your ears to different ways of presenting things. I have no idea what Telegrpah Road sounded like in concert some 30 years ago but I would be very disappointed if an MK fan said to me after a concert, "I really like Telegrpah Road tonight. It was just like 1985 (or whenever)". That's the moment I would ask myself, "Why am I here? What's the point?"
-
Thank you Knoplerfan for the treat!
twm, always nice comments. Remember one episode of the Simpsons, where they ask famous Bart foe autographs and a little girl asking to dedicate hers on "ebay". ;D
Of course to me an autograph of an artist has special value if it is just for me, but since MK hasn't been around, I would be content with a genuine second hand autograph. But sell it, no way!
-

Thank you, Knopflerfan and also Ingrid for the recording. I have just finished listening and it was terrific! I particularly enjoyed the part about BIA and the various improvisations - very interesting. Also during the part about SOS, I was surprised to hear him mention that he doesn't play it any more!
Thanks again both of you! :)
-
He indeed said that Val. He didn't say however that he would never play it again, but I think we can wave SOS goodbye for a while at least
-
Ingrid thank you so much for the recording!
-
Yes again - thanks Ingrid the recording was great! (better than my effort!) and thanks again for helping me meet my hero ;)
Guys when you email/message me please, please include your email address!!!
Everyone is more than welcome with the distribution of the recording. I would like to think someone would do it for me if I couldn't make a one-off event.
Mind you Ingrid, Mandy and myself had a great time as you will all have gathered...

On behalf of Ingrid and I:
Everyone is so very welcome! (I must have mailed out around 50+ links tonight alone.....)
Please enjoy
-
Is is possible to send me a link too, please? Love AMIT details/scoops and the 27th sounds like 'such a treat' to use MK oft-used phrase. And, since I'm here, if I may weigh in re discussion about MK and popularity. My take is that brilliant lyrics tell unsentimental, keenly observed and empathetic life stories that get added punch with virtuoso melodies, instruments, arrangements, musicians. With all that we get a body of music that's both worldly and wise and choc' a bloc' with ideas to admire and dissect - not something Twitterland takes to easily - and a musician who's more than easy to be smitten with!
-
Hey, thanks for all the recaps and pictures of this event, everybody. So glad you got the chance to go!
-
After listening I can confirm, that the recording is a treasure - thanks Ingrid and Knopflerfan.

Hi knopflerfan
maybe you didn't see my PM, or you were overbooked by too many requests, but I would be very gratefull if you could send me a link to the recording, please
thanks in advance :wave
-
can we not simply upload it to a tracker site? no need for further pm's
-
I asked by pm for the recording but without any success. Lucky that a friend who got it sent it to me
Where are the pictures someone mentioned?
-
Dear friends and fellow fans
Please keep in mind that amarkintime does not provide any recordings, be they legal or not, nor any links thereto!
Whatever is being shared outside amit or privately is not under our control.
Especially people who register "just for asking to get a recording" in their very first post are somewhat doubtful to me.
Just my 2 cents
-
i can asure you, even if it was my first post, i am reading the forum at least 2 years i think, and i am a true MK fan. Also have a lot of his stuff on my computer and if there will be chance to share it, i will do that with pleasure.
-
That is kind of you - but amarkintime is not a sharing site.
That's what I was saying mainly.
I still wonder that there has 't been any other reason for you to register and share your thoughts for the last 2 years.. ;-)
-
I, too, have been reading for at least one year before I registered and then it took me 6 months to get started. So I can understand. But everybody has to understand that since the internet and AMIT up to a point, is a faceless community, simply we just can not believe and trust someone because he said we can. I have found many fellow fans that even though far away from Greece, I call friends and keep in touch with, outside this forum.
man on a track simply stated the ovious that we should not let anyone harm this forum, by being careless or giving out wrong impressions. This is just a forum.
xardas welcome and I am looking forward for your posts and contributing to the discussions!
-
Sorry if I haven't replied only I have a life too!!
I will try to email the links out to those who have emailed me asap.
By the way for all those that have 'just joined' the forum you will NOT get a copy!!
Please just bear with me.....
-
If you want one please send a pm. But if Someone can upload it to the tracker please do so. I haven't much time, too much concerts too much holiday, so behind with work. :hmm
This is not official stuff so the link to the tracker can be in this thread.

hey knopflerfan, no worries bruv. Just have it uploaded to a tracker, by yourself or someone you know, no need to send out single links to various people. You know we love you ;)
-
Ingrid, I will try to upload it, hope I do it correctly. I will let you know when ready.
-
It is up but can't get to announce it to Spanish city. Will keep trying.
-
i am starting to get totally different image about people here on this forum. All that time i was reading stuff here, i was getting filling that you people are nice, a real MK fans. It seems that u are more some kind a ghetto.. Will i have to pass some kind a test to be welcome here?? burn name of Mark on my skin? really weird..
-
Hi, Xardas,
I agree that sadly there has some harshness turned up in this thread which is not usual for AMIT which you probably know.
But:
It is just about the sharing thing. Nobody doubts that you are a fan or not, that has nothing to do with it. But registering with the aim to expect to get the link has a little taste with it.
Don't forget, KNOPFLERFAN has no duty or anything to send it to us. He shared it with some friends that know him or that he knows (personally), and indeed in that case we sometimes tend to think that this is just a little MK village - and forget about the rest of the world reading it. In NO case you should generalize not getting a link with "AMIT not friendly" or "ghetto" stuff.
We had the same kind of bad feelings when somebody recorded the Redbud Tree single last year and had a link. Suddenly dozens of new members turned up only to get the link. And that's just not working. Somebody accused long-time members to be picky or arrogant only because they were not willing to send 100 mails per hour... and with that, all fun had gone. I also would have quit and saying kiss my ass and try to get the link somewhere else.
If The givers want to give, it's fine. As KNOPFLERFAN also said, he has a "real life", so you cannot blame him for not sending mails fast enough...
Please try to get over your bitterness and give us and yourself a chance to get more and better acquainted with..
LE
-
Nicely said LE. Everybody is welcome here.
And since Ingrid has been so kind as to give a go ahead, for anyone interested look at Spanish city for it.
Thank you very much Ingrid and Knopflerfan! A bottle of wine is waiting for you next time you're in Athens!
-
To all people, I want to see as much people having it. First try the spanish tracker, thanks for uploading Vgonis, if that doesn't work drop me a pm with you email-adress and monday or Tuesday I will collect the addresses and send as much as possible. In between I have a life too. So be patient, it will come to you some day.
I second LE, as soon as we have a scoop a lot of people turn up and first post is asking for the recording.
I hope it's not only that what you're looking for. We are a nice bunch of people in general but don't blame us if we send out things first to our longtime friends. A lot of great friendships are build here, that's more important than any recording.
-

And yes some users I had never conversed with before and it was them who were getting a tad impatient because I hadn't replied straight away - now that got my back up!!
What the newcomers must understand is that the majority of us that converse on hear REGULARLY are good friends and have been for a few years!!!
-
i am starting to get totally different image about people here on this forum. All that time i was reading stuff here, i was getting filling that you people are nice, a real MK fans. It seems that u are more some kind a ghetto.. Will i have to pass some kind a test to be welcome here?? burn name of Mark on my skin? really weird..
Why not spend a little more time chatting to us on the forum rather than just reading? You will soon realise that we ARE nice, real MK fans!!
Ghetto?? We are not a minority group - perhaps you would realise that if you see us all at an MK concert!!!
-
I was in Ljubljana, so it is possible that i saw ingrid.
Maybe we really had a bad start, but i am sure you are nice guys and girls.

Bad start, well join in the discussion and you will soon find out that we are not that bad - we certainly don't bite well Ingrid might!!!! ;D

LOL ;D

We have been friends here for years. Some of us have become lifelong real friends, beyond the forum. It's a great place, and xardis you are very very welcome here. This forum is a positive, friendly, and very happy place.

Sorry if I seemed eager, but I just asked by PM as it was suggested by both knopflerfan and Ingrid. :)
I didn't want to urge anyone, it seemed "natural" to me to do so, as I ever replied in the past to anyone who asked me to send music.
I must admit I'm not familiar with torrents/tracker, etc...but nevermind. I know I will found the occasion in the future to get this recording, so no soucy, no troubles. all is fine. sorry again if my post was understood as "urgent" :wave
and I confirm, people here are very nice, friendly, and always ready to serve. :clap
-
Welcome xardas :wave I hope it isn't "some kind a ghetto" here at AMIT. We are all un-paid volunteers here and all do our best to help our fellow AMIT

A little review found in our local paper of the event.
Me thinks the bottom sentence sums the event up!!

Same report, same photo but in Bridport newspaper:
http://www.bridportnews.co.uk/archive/2013/10/05/10719599.An_Audience_with_Mark_Knopfler__Bridport_Arts_Centre/
I guess the two newspapers are part of the same group.

I sent Guy an email to thank him and Mark for the event and also to thank Mark for signing my Strat 'Hang-tags'
Bridport - thankyou

Guy, I feel compelled to thank you both on behalf of my wife and a friend who had travelled from the Netherlands to see you both again, for a really informative 1hr 25mins at Bridport last Friday. Shame you had to rush away afterwards but hey-ho.... Please thank Mark for agreeing to sign my two Fender 'MK' Strat 'Hang-Tags' they along with the two 'MK' Strat's themselves are as you will understand very treasured indeed. It was great to actually meet the man himself after all these years too - My wife will tell you how made up I was and still am!! Kind Regards
Thanks, will do.

It's funny how a location you live very near to but have on many, many occasions just passed through has now become a huge 'place of worship' especially after the 27th September 2013!!!
My wife and I whenever we pass through Bridport on our way to the West of the UK (Devon/Cornwall) constantly chat about that very special day almost 8 years ago listening to and then meeting 'the master' after the show! It is and always will be without doubt one of the best day's in my life.....
Sorry to harp on but I will never ever forget it!
-
Thanks for resurrecting this 8-years old topic making me think about some MK event Sept. 27 in September.

After reading this I thought "I think I never listened to the recording of this event" and searched it on my computer, and by any reason, I don't have it... I searched for it on unlimited and knopflertk and it wasn't there either.
Knopflerfan, do you still have it and could send it to me? I'll upload it to unlimited and knopflertk so we can be safe we have it .

Funnily enough I'm in contact with dmg and he asked me the same with regards adding it to Unlimited. I did record it along with Ingrid - hers being the better one out of the two. I will look in the coming days for my copy and I also have Ingrids copy too... :wave

I understand that feeling. I used to walk by the bullring in Valencia quite a lot, but after I attended there the MK concert in 2019, there are always a couple of seconds that I stop, look at the bullring, and have a sight and a shiver...
-
It's most certainly a strange but nice feeling you get....
-
For me the Zwolle gig in 2013 because the Russian dates were cancelled. Zwolle... ::) What a miracle that was.

I love how MK drove himself even in the Guitar Stories documentary. He loves to drive and it's cool to see.
