Thanks for the info Jeroen.   :thumbsup

Not keen on the remastering they feel they have to do;  why can't they just leave it au natural as it was when it was recorded?  At least it would be authentic.  We are just getting further and further away from the original source.

Who are they aiming this at anyway?  Without any extras and in vinyl only it has a very limited appeal. :hmm

LoG, BiA and OES were recorded digitally, and i doubt that it was with a higher resolution than the CD standard (16 bit, 44.1 kHz). Where is the sense then to press these on vinyl again?? Is not the only justification of vinyl to have the music without the information loss that goes along with recording digitally?

The vinyl market is there obviously and it is growing.
Only last friday at work (bookstore) I was reading about a new edition from the radio play of "THE HOBBIT" from a very famous German recording from 1980 - box set, 7 vinyl discs, 70

That's what I'd like to read!

+100 :thumbsup

and I am sure that it will sell more then

even if the market is growing, I don't see the point to release standard version, without bonus.  :smack

I think it wouldn't cost much more to add some bonus tracks, at least singles or things like that, and th number of copies sold woulld be far far bigger  :disbelief

I'd love to see things like "deluxe editions" which were relesased some years ago : who, cream, etc...

and we know that "official" stuff exist to release such version :

imagine :

- the 1st album : one CD with the album, one CD with the demos + eastbound train
- communique : one CD with the album, one CD with the entire album in demo versions (all songs were recorded in london, like WDYTYG rleleased on the MFN comp)
- making movies : one CD with the album, one CD with the dortmund gig (if TOL had been released on live at the BBC, why could'nt they release the whole show ?)
- love over gold : one CD with the album, one CD with the EP + badges
- Alchemy : whole concert including Industrial disease, rwistin, Portobello
- Brothers in arms : I'm not aware of unrealeased songs, but maye there are some. Or at least the wembley gig...
- On every street : one CD with the album, one CD with montior mixes + faces B

solos albums : all have bonus songs, except KTGC, so it wouldn't be difficult to find stuff for a "deluxe" edition

I can't understand this policy to relaese again and again album version without any single bonus track  :hmm ???

From MKNews:

DS THE STUDIO ALBUMS: Formed in 1977 Dire Straits, led by Mark Knopfler, were one of the iconic groups of the late 20th Century. When they first appeared on the London live circuit, their timeless music, faultless musicianship and memorable songs quickly connected with music lovers. From the start, it was clear that Dire Straits would set their own path and while the then-current zeitgeist of new wave showed there was an appetite for the new, Dire Straits proved that classic song writing would never go out of fashion.

Working hard touring, writing and recording, they released a series of ever more successful albums and by 1985 they were the biggest selling band in the world. Dire Straits

I really like the idea of this box, it's a nice idea to release Brothers as a double, Why Worry has nver been released on vinyl in it's full version before. Would buy it if I wouldn't allready have 5 of the albums on vinyl.
I agree with JF that a rerelease of the CD's would make more sense though, there's a lot of material for that!

This is what there must be out there:

Dire Straits: Original album, demo's, including Real Girl, and Eastbound Train, soundboard of the tour

I also dream about the release of the real complete collection of DS songs. But I tend to think that MK himself does not want this to happen. No actual reason, just a matter of feeling.

I guess that, unfortunately, the whole collection will be available, if so, only in one or two decades. 2028, 50 years of DS.

Hi, all.  It occurred to me this morning that maybe this reissue has to be done because Warner still owns rights on the Dire Straits stuff, and in order for Mark and Universal to do anything in the future with it, they need to recreate it with the re-masters.  If this is the reason, maybe we can expect other things to happen to that music in the future that they can't do now.

Any thoughts? :think

Not so sure about that - Mark was only signed to Warner Bros for the USA.

Hi, Rolleyway Man.  What I meant is that with Universal having world distribution rights, instead of all of the world except North America, because of the re-masters, they could potentially repackage Dire Straits material in different ways and be able to sell it to a truly world market.  I think we all know that Warner was definitely not in tune with Universal regarding distribution of new material, let alone old material.  I just see this re-mastering as a step to them being able to do different things in the future.  This would also kind of gibe with not including bonus material, etc.  This is a case of creating a "new" issue, so the won't be violating Warner's copyrights, where it probably would become actionable in court.

I believe that this LP collection has many flaws, but hardly the ones you mention. I mean, it is an audiophile release for vinyl lovers, and the fact that they offer remastered (which I don't know if it is good) on 180gr vinyl (simply vinyl and a couple other companies offered all but one of the records in 180gr, but limited run and quantities and pretty expensive) two of them as double vinyls (BiA with the CD times-and OES with better sound surely-still wonder how they managed to fit 60+ minutes in a single vinyl) and at a resonable price if ordered from Amazon.co.uk. is good enough for me.
I know that it is an overkill anyway, having heard all these albums a zillion times and having multiple copies from around the world.
But I can only complain for these things:
1.I would expect a full discography, including Alchemy, On the night and Live BBC.
2.I would expect an extra double LP with all the B-sides, and non-LP tracks, or the ones appearing as bonus at the various compilations.
3.I would love (but hardly expect at least not in vinyl) out-takes, live etc. The box is an expensive item as it is, that would only attract DS fan with a vinyl addiction. Extra unreleased tracks could and should be issued seperately on CDs. Vinyl would be great but it is more expensive and with a smaller consumer base, no matter how many they rediscover it. It probably wouldn't have been viable.  And then it is the matter of volume. You can fit in a CD, what you can fit in 2, some time 3 sides of vinyl.
4.I would love and expect to have a new book, with details, lyrics,  photos of every cover&back cover & inners+ label of LPs and 12'' maxis and 7'' singles issued around the globe (in the Dylan-bootleg series no8 fashion) , interviews and essays, accompanying this release.
5.I don't want no scarfs, pebbles, headpins and similar memorabilia. They can keep them and give us music.
6.An extra live in the box (from 1980, 1982-3-5) would be more than welcome but it should be a seperate release as well.

I can't think anymore right now, but I think that MK is not interested about the past so much in order to spend time working on it. After all he produces new music all the time and to look back would stoll him, wih dubious results for a wider audience. (Yes money has everything to do with this) After all the CDs,  in HDCD or similar audiophile formats have been issued in Japan in such boxes, only they are too expensive to import.
Listening to Pink Floyd's -The Wall immersion, I wondered how many times I am going to listen to the extra material and if it interests that many people to begin with.  I guess the same goes for Dire straits.

Hi, Vgonis.  You probably are correct.  But what I think is that this isn't really about how much they sell or to whom, but about establishing a vinyl copy of the DS material (since much was originally released in vinyl) to base any further distribution of that material in whatever format.  I'm not an expert and I don't know for sure, but I suspect that this whole box set is to establish a "different" set of albums so that Warner's copyrights are not violated.  This isn't really important to core fans, since many may already have the originals.  They probably won't be interested in acquiring new vinyl when they have the original, especially without any bonus material.  I think this is Universal's marketing plan to get control of Mark's catalog without having to go to Warner to get authorization for any further packaging.  And yes, Mark is not interested in looking back, he is all for charging forward.  But with North America now becoming available to Universal for distribution, which they had to jump through hoops to do before - imports from Universal Japan (i.e. Privateering), this is their chance to get legal distribution of Dire Strait's music on this continent.  I don't know whether Warner was involved at all in the Notting Hillbillies album, but I think they may have authorized release of Mark and Chet's Neck and Neck album.  I know Warner was involved in all of Mark's other albums, both solo and soundtrack, aside from Privateering, and certainly Mark and Emmy Lou's record and DVD.  I suspect that until Universal has established a "new" album for all of these (or perhaps they will only do a select number), Warner could prevent Universal from distributing those albums in NA in the future.  While that doesn't really effect us core fans (unless we don't have those albums because they are no longer being produced) not having world-wide distribution rights is probably a big draw-back in Universal's marketing plan on Mark's complete catalog .  Time will tell if my guesses are correct, but I suspect we will see additional material that came out in North America under Warner's label originally, and they will probably be re-masters so that a "new" recording won't infringe Warner's rights.   :think

Suprlinda, I read your argument with real interest. I wonder what sort of contracts MK has signed with WB. I mean if by changing companies the rights upon his releases are revoked instantly, then Universal has every right to release whatever without obstacles. I have seen many cases like this. I have also seen cases that the rights expire after a certain amount of time or after a number of releases. I have also seen cases where the artist has to wait for many years or lose the control of his past recordings.
But:
1.We can only speculate. You might be right, who can see in the labyrinths of the record company contracts,  but it something that should concern us in the end stage of buying the product.
2.The record industry landscape has changed dramatically since 1978. There are only 3-4 majors although WB and Universal have always been rivals. But even with the older contract Universal has the whole world but North America. The record is pressed in Germany.
3.MK surely had trouble with WB, because if the contract was clear he would have been able to sign with another company more than a year ago and the trouble with sales from the site or imports wouldn't have reached our ears.
4.Vinyl is a very small portion of the music market, no matter how much it has boomed the last decade. If this is a trick to bypass obstacles, it would probably be tried with CDs , which is a much cheaper medium. Dylan's alledged case with Sony releasing a compilation to renew the rights comes in mind, but that had to do with the 50 years from the recording day rather than a change of labels. And the same stands for the Beatles remasters.
5.Amazon.co has raised 15 GBP the preorder price! This means that if it is a limited run, it sells well and they want to even up supply and demand (of course it is wrong since the first come first served with a resonable profit should be the case) The vinyl is said to be pressed in Germany but the label-company releasing it is probably a smaller company licencing it and not Universal. Or maybe Universal is the mother company. (See amazon.de and amazon.com. no clues, but very expensive if you compare it with the modest original Amazon.co.uk price)
6.Brothers in Arms 2LP with original CD times by Bob Ludwig was released not long ago in the US, and it is pretty price, at nearly 40$.
7.OES is still waiting for a decent 2LP Vinyl release. But if WB owns the original masters, then Universal is the only owner of the new vinyl remasters.
8.Why not include the Alchemy and On the Night records in the catalogue?
9.Neck and Neck was from CBS.

Only time will tell. I guess we are just wasting good time and money on this issues. If the record companies had any interest for the customer, they wouldn't do all these things, just to squeeze the loyal fans.
See this if you have the time:

Dear vgonis, thanks for the link, I'll look into it later in the day.

I'm sorry, I'm going to put a link to that evil retailer once again, just because I couldn't find the box online anywhere else yet.

http://www.amazon.de/Dire-Straits-Vinyl-Box-LP/dp/B00F469JLQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381386703&sr=8-1&keywords=dire+straits+box (http://www.amazon.de/Dire-Straits-Vinyl-Box-LP/dp/B00F469JLQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381386703&sr=8-1&keywords=dire+straits+box)

So that's 138,99 Euros now, it's scheduled for November, 13. That's steep.

There are a lot of good ones out there.

I have this one and if you want to spent some money for a heavy duty machine it is the one to choose. Add a heavy duty stylus and you would be able to buy and listen to used records. This is a direct drive one, so it is practically immortal when used in a home. I think that there are newer editions with a USB exit.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technics_SL-1200

For audiophiles, pro-ject has a full series from cheap-ish (300-400$) to really expensive (10000$). These ones are really state of the art with minimal problems compared with other belt-driven turntables.
http://www.project-audio.com/main.php?info=turntables&cat=turntables&lang=en

If you have a trusted second hand retailer, record players are out there and they tend to go for a fruction of their original price. But you have to know, in order to avoid the over used ones.

Happy hunting!

I've said it before about "bootleg series" in another thread, and I have the same feeling about "50 years of DS", "complete catalog", "bonus tracks", "unreleased song", "b-sides" etc... : I'm afraid that the only chance to get such material will be after Mark's death.

well I know that the sultans comp is from 1998.

My question was if this comp could have been the  last album, studio, compilation or live in the DS contract, quoted by Hugo97.

in 98, Ed was still there. I don't know if there was still contract clauses with the record company at this time ?

I know Wikipedia isn't that reliable, but it says the following about the live album:

"Live at the BBC was released on 26 June 1995, the year in which the group officially disbanded. According to Knopfler, the album was released because Dire Straits still owed one album to Phonogram Records (now Mercury Records). This album was a means to end the legal contract, before Mark Knopfler began his solo career (still signed to Mercury)."

I read that too but other artists released Live at the BBC albums too.  To me it seems like a series of BBC releases taken from their archives. :think

The vinyl market is there obviously and it is growing.
Only last friday at work (bookstore) I was reading about a new edition from the radio play of "THE HOBBIT" from a very famous German recording from 1980 - box set, 7 vinyl discs, 70

Hey! In the photo I see BiA and OES as simple sleeve records. I was hoping for gatefold ones. Cheapish... Just wish they are just the props and the double vinyls are housed in gatefold sleeves.
Also I see that the price in both Amazon.de and amazon.co.uk is increasing by the day. It started at 71 BP and 135 Euros respectively and now it has gone to over 85BP and 153 Euros! What is the matter with this? Any insight? Is this a rip off? Do they get so many orders?

Totally unbelievable. Why so vast price differences? Any ideas? I think Amazon-s are individual companies but actually forming a core in order to have better prices for massive orders. So why the difference? Amazon.it is the cheapest by far, but has no free shipping.

Your ideas of the suspected reasons for releasing this box are very interesting. When I heard of it first, I only thought: Ah, it`s Christmas-time and somebody wants to earn money without much work. It`s very typical to release boxes and compilations at Christmas-time, isn`t it? For the people who needs urgently a gift for their friends who already have everything!
I would love to have a complete box-set with  all the DS-music incl. all Bonus tracks, yes. But

Today I get this Email, boy i'm pissed about this.

Anybody have this set yet, if so what is your opinion?

Amazon.co.uk was spot on the delivery date but the first one that arrived had poor packaging and two of the corners were damaged.I have sent it back and they replaced it in 2 days! The same poor packaging but luckily no damage this time. I am now striving to get a refund for my return postage. Mind you it is 2750 gr, and very pricy to send back...

A nice package, but alas, no gatefolds for the double albums. A nice pressing I suppose, although I already have the first 4 studio albums in many equally good (or better) editions.  The BiA edition which is double, restores the CD timings of the songs and spreads them in 4 sides, and that should be an advantage. The same goes for OES (4 sides)  since the original edition had 60+ minutes packed in just two sides! But I haven't compared them yet, audio wise. So actually you get 4 single LPs and 2 double ones.

After receiving the above Email from Amazon, I went into my office on Friday afternoon and found a big box waiting for me
with the Dire Straits Box set in it.   :lol :lol :lol
This morning I played LoG side 2, boy it beautiful "O" so quiet no surface noise at all to me well worth the price.
I hope the other albums are as quiet, on my VPI/Transfiguration rig.

Has anybody had any luck in downloading the digital flies from Back to Black Vinyl using the coupon code in the package.
It keeps telling me that my postal code is not valid using my valid Canadian postal code, so I changed countries to the USA
and used my head office Zip code, still the same response "Postal Code not Valid"

Thanks Brian

Sorry folks for digging out another old thread but I have too much time in my hands at the moment obviously. I SO want this box and I swear I will never let the next opportunity go if there is another nice release. Looking back, there have been some nice items within the last 15 years. Nevertheless I am pretty astonished that this box had so few respond on AMIT and all in all a pretty negative one. I find this  box for 300 € upwards and feel the urge to go for a hunt...

The albums are sold with the sticker and the actual pressings but it's the box that I really aim for..

Oh thanks but this was more drooling about it and not meant as a question to buy it from anyone. It is just that my mind has changed about these things and I feel a little "collector's item soul" coming up inside of me during the last months.

I also found that "Boom, Like That" Single again and thought it was very nicely done and a good idea back then. I remember the total astonishment about them releasing it on VINYL, it was much more dead in 2004. I bought it just for having it.  My copy had a big scratch on it from the beginning but I never cared as playing it was totally unlikely. The times are a-changin'!

Hope for some nice more special releases and nice stuff in the future. Deluxe Box Sets seem to be a sure thing nowadays.
(Dire Straits Live in Wembley 1985 Limited Deluxe Box Set with CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, Book, original Poster, Buttons and Tourbook. Complete and unabridged. How about that? If we were Queen fans, we would have several of them already...)

Check this out LE. Many copies for sale from 130 Euros. But remember this is  a heavy item so postage may be 20 Euros or more. As you rightly mention, all albums are released separately as well, and the only plus for this release was the outer box and the good original price.
