As you all might of guessed Joe Bonamassa is now officially my second favourite guitarist second only to the one and only MK, Therefore I have decided that as a lot on this forum seem interested too that I thought the idea of a JB thread was in order - that way we can discuss anything JB related without disturbing the main MK Threads...,
So lets have some serious JB chat, Tell us your favourite JB track?, Favourite studio album?, Favourite Live album and even favourite dvd/Blu-ray?
Have you like me seen JB Live? if so where and how was it for you?
-
Going to get the ball rolling...
I was first made aware of Joe Bonamassa on this forum when a thread linked JB saying how much he rated MK and listed him I think 5th favourite Strat player.
I then went out my way to listen to some of his material (Studio and Live) and to be honest I have not looked back. We both went to see Joe at Bournemouth on the second night of his tour last September (2013) and he was just amazing. There aren't many concerts where I go 'WOW' (except an MK Concert of course!) but that night sits high up there for me. Joe started with an acoustic set which was excellent before the opening few bars of 'Slow Train' pounded away and the electric set started and JB let rip!
Joe has so much energy and enthusiasm and you can just tell how much he and the band are enjoying it, let alone the audience.
To sum up: if you have never listened to JB - Then I suggest you do!
-
Thanks for this!
Maybe one of the editors could clear up the 2014 MK RECORDING DIARY thread and move the last few Bonnamassa posts to this one, because I indeed had the feeling that the last few pages where too much off topic... just a suggestion of course from someone who is not interested in Joe the slightest but respects the enthusiasm of course. But Guy's diary has not even begun and there are already seven or eight pages... :wave

the firts Joe's recording I heard was Rockpalast, and I only have the black rock album
I like some tunes, but sometimes, it's a little bit too "technical" and fast for me. It sounds a little bit like Gary Moore, sometimes...
you know it seems like "I am going to show you how fast I can play", but it's not what blues is all about IMHO
for this kind of blues-rock style I prefer SRV or Derek Tuck, for examples
funny thing is that "JB" makes me think to "Jeff Beck", and Joe quoted lics from air blower in a song on rockpalast (can't remember which one)
-
Exactly LE,
The topic had long dissapeared therefore it was time to create an independant thread!
I created a new Thread for Marks 'New' album because it HAS begun and felt it would get lost if added to the original thread!
-
Yes I can agree that sometimes Joe does seem 'I'm gonna play fast just to show you' but I feel he has tidied up his licks as they are so much more melodic.
Try listening to the 'Newer' material and just realise how much he has matured.....
-
I downloaded the whole concert from the RAH 2009 and I enjoyed it to a point, but I still find his music extremely repetitive and I have yet to make it to the end of the concert before boredom sets in. Maybe I have to try a bit harder, but he is a great guitarist, no doubt about it and I like his voice. Sloe Gin is my favourite song, because it is a bit different to the rest, which all seems pretty much the same to me.

12-bar Blues lesson :thumbsup
He seems to be a nice chap. But somehow his playing in the early records is a bit repetitive to me, although I have to admit that I don't have all his records by now. Oh, and his voice is a bit too smooth for my ears, maybe MK should invite him to the Mawson's from time to time.
I really do consider to see him live, when he is in my neck of the woods.

I like the beat of Last Kiss, great song, made my holiday in Ontario, Canada.

New 'Live' album - CD/DVD/Blu-ray with 'Beth Hart' announced! :clap

I just ordered the new Joe with Beth Hart DVD.
And also the Live at Iridium DVD/CD just arrived 2 days ago.
Bringing out 2 DVDs und 2 CDs this year. wow. :clap :clap :clap :clap
Workaholic this man.
I just returned from his first European concert in D
-
As the MK European Tour comes to an end now it is time to think of maybe something different in the meantime.
My second fave guitarist after MK is definately Joe Bonamassa.
He is just about to start a 3 Kings Tribute Tour through the US. In its most beautiful Amphitheatres.
After that he comes to Europe/UK.
He has just changed his Band completely
It is now:
Joe Bonamassa on Guitar and Vocals
Michael Rhodes on Bass ( he played several tunes on MKs Golden Heart Album)
Anton Fig on Drums (formerly Letterman Drummer)
Reese Wynans on keys (from Stevie Ray Vaughans Double Trouble)
Daniel Sadownick on percussion (Rock Candy Funk Party)
This Band is really a Burner. After MKs the best in the World
Joe is always changing his shows and setlists immensely. He is just a brilliant guitarist
I saw him in Oct 14 and March 15. Songs that were in both setlists: only 4 ;D ;D ;D
If you have some interest in really rockin Blues a la SRV or Gary Moore or Jeff Healey. Go - you will not be disappointed
He just finished his next Album in Nashville. Days of recording: 7
Have Fun and enjoy

I have liked what I heard from the live In Amsterdam with Beth.
-
Try his latest Blu-ray release: Muddy Wolf at Red Rocks
-
Not my cup of tea, but now I can listen to him singing because his voice has improved a lot.
-
Since seeing MK on the last tour and most probably for the last time my attention turns further to JB albeit with a main focus still on MK (of course) but I've just purchased the 'Commemorative VIP' package for his latest LIVE show promoting his new album which was recorded at Abbey Road and which is to be streamed worldwide on Sunday 20th September 2020.
https://jbonamassa.com/streaming/worldwide-concert/
A few more Bonamassa links to MK which some may not know:
*Chad Cromwell plays drums on three tracks on Joe's 'Dust Bowl' album
*Jim Cox has played Piano with Joe....
*Another amazing fact is that here in my town was a music venue called 'Mr Kyps' and before it became a music venue it was my middle school.
In 2005 and also 10 years later in 2015 Joe played this little venue obviously in 2005 as a relative unknown but in 2015 as a rather well known star!!!! And so Joe has played guitar in my old school hall!!!!
-
I love the guy, follow him on Instagram, he's awesome. Seems like his love for vintage guitars is the biggest love towards vintage guitars I've ever seen. His voice is not my cup of tea, though, but his collaborations with other artists like Beth Hart are mind-blowingly awesome. I remember hearing "I'll Take Care Of You" for the first time and my jaw was literally on the floor. THAT guitar, THAT voice.

Joe's a phenomenal player, and his success is amazing considering he has no record label supporting him. It's all him and his little management group.
His weakest link, though, is the songwriting. I've listened to almost everything he's released, and nothing struck me or stuck with me.
My favorite setting that Joe appears in is the side project Rock Candy Funk Party. Great fun, great playing and catchy tunes.

Not sure I agree with regards Joe's songwriting especially in the later albums (Different shades of Blue, Blues of desperation & Redemption) as both his wording, singing and playing just seem to get stronger.
As a track 'The Ghost of Macon Jones' is a particular fave for me....
Where the river keeps on rollin', time marches on
The sun hides in the shadows, you know where you belong
You walk in the silence readin' names on the stones
You can roll with the tide, but you can't hide
From the ghost of Macon Jones
Well they always came to church, sat up in the back
Drank the holy water, dapper dressed in black
Away from the rich folk where they let down his bones
Now they whisper at the sermons
They can hear the ghost of Macon Jones
From the time he was a child, it was easy to make friends
Some swore they found, right up to the end
When he jumped off that bridge they just watched and went back home
They all cried to their mommas that they saw
The ghost of Macon Jones
In the nights, right along
In your fight, just stay strong
In the ill-fated wind, just go
Yeah you need to unlearn, what you've been told
No one knows what happened, 'cause the truth will often lie
Widows swear he loved 'em, he was born to make them cry
Sometimes a man believes he's destined to go at this life alone
If you head down that cold river you'll feel
The ghost of Macon Jones
Some say he died, with a smile on his face
Others say he cried, he never found his place
If you listen to your fears you might hear his restless moan
When they start digging up your dirt
You'll meet the ghost of Macon Jones
If you see your reflection in the water
That's the ghost of Macon Jones
-
He has improved immensely the last few years, I'll give you that.

Beth Hart toured twice in Russia and both times I was there to hear it, though both times I wish Joe would be there to blow the roof off the concert hall with his guitar playing ;D

https://youtu.be/PZyIouoc5pY (https://youtu.be/PZyIouoc5pY)
This was really good. Tight and powerful vocal perfomance by Joe. I was also pleased that the guitar was really restrained, only some bars with hot playing, the rest was either the melodic hook or some riffing. The guitar tone is just insanely good. And you've got to give it to the man, there aren't many acts out there today playing this kind of music. For people who love guitar-based rock and blues rock, Joe is the guy these days.

Also from the forthcoming 'Royal Tea' album which was recorded at Abbey Road. Cant help feeling this would be an excellent Bond theme...

I am totally with you here Knopflerfan and hunter.
When I was a bit disappointed by the Privateering Tour 2013 I was looking for another Band or artist to follow.
Something different and maybe new.
in 2014 I found Joe Bonamassa. By Incident on eventim
I watched some youtube vids and bought tickets for his Dusseldorf show. Awesome.
Then I watched the 4 DVDs Tour de Force and became a fan. Saw his Brussels concert and was by then addicted.
He is a great guitarist and maybe the hardest working man in music business. Tours immensely. and so on.
My favourite Joe performances are the ones with Rock candy Funk party. A lot of funk, rythm and guitar solos. Very improvising.
you can watch them play the Baked potato in LA when you look at youtube.
His songwriting is done now by other Nashvillian songwriters. He never does it alone. He is not Bob Dylan or MK. Far from it away.
But guitarwise he is one of my faves now. But OK. He will never reach the tone of our MK.
But in the world of modern blues. My No 1.
Joe led me also to other artists. And I thank him for that.
Everybody who likes JB has to check out the following Guitarists. They are very talented...
Kenny Wayne Shepherd
Ryan McGarvey
Eric Gales (joe is producing his new record)
Josh Smith
JD Simo
Kris Barras
Walter Trout
Kirk Fletcher
This little Blues family helps me to enjoy live music while MK writes Musicals and goes on Tour the next time.
I also recommend to attend his Pay Per View concert on September 20th
USD 20 is worth the money
He performs at the Ryman Auditorium Nashville
His Bassplayer is Michael Rhodes. One of the closest friends of Richard Bennett and Golden Heart Bass Player
His Keyboard player Reese Wynans is from SRV Double trouble and he attended MK Gig in LA in 2015
He played with Mike Henderson for his DVD Muddy Wolf at Red Rocks
He was also invited to play in Nashville with the Band from Michael Rhodes and Chad Cromwell
You see. Musical World is not that big
Give JB a listen
Best Band in the World after MKs
But it is very close

Good post steinei...
Grab some of Joe's 13+ Bluray/DVDs and watch a real talent....love the way he play any genre at the touch of a hat...
Really cannot wait for Sunday evening's live performance now!! - alas I've paid for the 'VIP' ticket to include my 'picture' to be seated in the auditorium and my name added to the end credits for both the initial perfomace and latterly the dvd/Bluray.....

And I am too! But I think it was the novelty value of the package at what I think is a good price for what you receive. The other 'nice touch' is I will receive an emailed picture of Joe with the 'pictures'!
-
Had a fantastic night last night in Nashville albeit as a cardboard cut out!
The gig was amazing and incredibly 'eery' as JB and his stellar band played the Ryman Auditorium in front of 1,600 fan cut outs and of course it was streamed worldwide! Fantastic playing as you would expect from Joe who showcased his forthcoming new album 'Royal Tea' which was recorded at Abbey Road studios...
After each song there was a deafening 'silence' which was very strange...
All in all this was brilliant and I'm grateful to have been able to give financially to this worthwhile project....
-
So the show was a cut-out, not a sell-out? ;D
-
The actually made physical cardboard prints? Wow. I'd have thought they'd do it digitally.
-
Fantastic effort by all concerned. With regards the picture I posted, Joe's parents are there in the front row next to Joe's left arm!!!

Pleased to hear you had a good time, Knopflerfan.
BTW Is that MK I see sitting just below the red circle? :think

Haha, yes could be!!!!! :wave
-
I'm getting excited as it's now just two days to go until 'Royal tea' is released....although I should have a 'digital' copy sent to me as part of the Ryman VIP package...
-
And so the big day has arrived and it's the new album 'Royal Tea' to listen to. Having been teased with the tracks just under a month ago 'Live' at the Ryman theatre in Nashville which was streamed worldwide I've now recieved my three various editions of the album - Limited edition' transparent Vinyl, Collectors CD in tin and a HMV exclusive Gatefold CD edition. Oh and a hand signed one coming from Joe too!!!!
'Royal Tea' was recorded at Abbey Road in January 2020 and the first impressions are that this is something very special indeed.
The album is largely co written with Bernie Marsden and also Jools Holland my fave track has to be 'Beyond the silence' written solely by JB...
Joe's vocals and guitar playing are sublime and the quality of the tracks has blown my mind! I suggest any Bonamassa wannabe fans give this a go - you will not be disappointed.....
-
Nice to see you on both Forums knopflerfan and Bonaknopfler ;D
I just listend and must say: A Killer album. 10 fab Tracks. No skipper. Nice vocals, Guitars, Bass and THAT Drum sound.
Awesome
Very good album. Must buy for Rock and Blues Fans

This latest studio album of Joe's is like you say a complete and utter Killer album and I agree no skippers at all - the album just gets better each time you listen to it - and that's been a lot today!!! The vinyl sounds awesome too! A No.1 contender I do believe - got to beat that Buble chap at least....
Joe is immense this particular album! As for the Drum sound - it is Anton Figg after all!!!
-
hmmmmm. from somewhere I know this Man... :think
Look closer
-
Yes, Scott McKeon has been a member of Sir Tom Jones' band.

did not know that :P
But look who's presented that show / tour

Of all the dates but it's April 1st when Joe will play another live session on Pay-per-view but this time forming the 'power trio' with Anton Fig (Drums) and Michael Rhodes (Bass)....
I've again opted for the VIP package and am looking forward to this event.

Well what a storming concert it was on the 1st April with Joe playing for 2.5 hrs - ok it was 2am BST here in the UK but it was worth staying awake for! I now have the pleasure of rewatching the concert for a month before eventual release......
It was fantastic to see my 'mug shot' on the end credits and to know the monies raised by Joe will go to helping musicians who because of the epidemic have lost much needed revenue....
In conversation with dmg shortly after we both agreed whilst it would be cool for MK to do a Livestream of sorts but we concluded he probably couldnt be bothered and also probably not up to it sadly......

Blows my mind everytime I hear Joe crank up!!

The 11th June saw the release of 'Royal Tea Live at the Ryman' onto CD/DVD/BLURAY & VINYL...
and true to their word both the mugshots and the names of those who bought the VIP package (including me) are now ever immortalised at the end of the film...
Such a fabulous momento from a most prestigious occasion last September...

The new video for Joe's latest single 'The Heart that never waits' from the forthcoming new album 'Time Clocks' (Signed copy ordered!)

The new Album - 'Time Clocks' - released 29th October 2021
AUGUST 25, 2021 – Joe Bonamassa has announced the upcoming release of his brand-new studio album ‘Time Clocks’, due out on October 29. ‘Time Clocks’ is a testament to his credentials and a toast to his longtime fans. His new sound has a raw and vital flavor, combined with a resolute skill that can only be gained through years of perseverance and unyielding dedication. It’s Joe Bonamassa at his finest, ready to rock. “What started out with the intentions of being a trio record turned into probably my most adventurous and involved record to date,” explains Bonamassa. His longtime producer Kevin Shirley adds, “I think Joe Bonamassa has made an album that is truly transitional. From a blues musician to a superstar artist, and I’m so thrilled to be along for the ride.” Joe and Kevin brought on the legendary Bob Clearmountain to mix the epic tracks, and Bob declares that “This is one of the best albums I've mixed in years. Joe is not only one of the finest blues & rock guitarists of our time, he's also a brilliant songwriter, which is impressively apparent on this record.”
Recorded in New York City, the album rediscovers Bonamassa at a newfound peak with heartfelt songwriting and an unparalleled Blues Rock prowess. ‘Time Clocks’ follows Joe’s constant evolution as he continues to forge ahead, bending genres, breaking down walls and defying the odds of the music industry. He’s known as “the man in the suit”, loved by many as the ultimate guitar hero, cited by critics as “the world’s biggest blues guitarist” (Guitar World), and now the music mastermind has found yet another layer of immense new artistry to share with his fans. As one of today’s most in-demand touring acts the road has been long and winding, but the rough journey has molded his craft into gold.
For the album, Bonamassa hit the studio with longtime collaborators Kevin Shirley as producer and manager/business partner Roy Weisman as executive producer. The album was recorded in New York City at Germano Studios/The Hit Factory and mixed by Bob Clearmountain (Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Toto, Bon Jovi). The band members include Steve Mackey (bass), Lachy Doley (piano), Bunna Lawrie (didgeridoo), Bobby Summerfield (percussion), and Late Night with David Letterman's Anton Fig (drums and percussion), along with Mahalia Barnes, Juanita Tippins, and Prinnie Stevens on backing vocals. The fantastic artwork on the album was created by famous graphic artist Hugh Syme (Rush, Aerosmith, Whitesnake). ‘Time Clocks’ will be available on CD, VINYL and Digital and released on Bonamassa’s own record label, J&R Adventures.
Recently Bonamassa dropped hints of the new album with his reeling anthem “Notches”, and with today’s exciting news he’s revealed the next Blues-heavy single “The Heart That Never Waits,” another instant classic that takes a tale of heartbreak and turns it around into an undeniable showstopper meant for the stadiums. Joe sings compassionately with an air of independence, in a voice that’s only gotten better with time – a rarity for an artist with such longevity in their career. These songs are a collection of stories that shed new light on Joe’s life as a journeyman, constantly creating and always on the run.
Looking back on recording during COVID-19 and the original intention behind the album, Bonamassa reflects, “Twenty years ago, I recorded a record of covers that eventually was called ‘Blues Deluxe.’ It was recorded at Bobby Nathan's studio in Manhattan. It captured an energy and purpose that always stuck with me as an artist. I lived in New York City at the time and times were pretty tough. My weekly routine was a combination of hustling sessions, gigs, and opportunities that seemed few and far between. I was hungry. Literally and figuratively. The music business is tough, very tough. Especially back in those days when major labels pulled all the strings and, in my case, all the punches. I subsisted on a basic diet of peanut butter and jelly and ramen noodles, purchased at the bodega on the corner of 83rd and Columbus Avenue.
Cut to 2019 and I find myself back in New York and inspired by the city again. My living conditions had changed dramatically in the subsequent 20 years, but the energy that makes New York City great still remained.
In February 2021, we found ourselves at Germano Studios, cutting music as a trio (but not trio music) and having to invent ways of making records when your lifelong producer is stuck in Australia due to travel restrictions. Kevin Shirley came up with a way of linking continents and consoles to where we had literally zero latency. Add Steve Mackey and Anton Fig to the mix, a few masks and curse words and we have the ‘New York Record’ aka ‘Time Clocks’.”

Again, the Chet Atkins quote, "I like what he's trying to achieve", but personally, every song he plays, sounds like something like really exists from a legendary artist that already did something great, so it makes it pointless, as, if I want to listen to Hendrix or SRV, I listen to them.
However, is great someone copy the legends nowdays, specially someone young. It provides hope to the misery that is music nowadays.
-
Tad harsh on Joe me thinks considering the talent he has...but each to their own..
I think your last paragraph sums it up quite nicely in regards providing hope to many with so much rubbish music around these days...

Don't get me wrong, I think he's great and if I attend any of his shows I know I'm gonna enjoy it a lot, it's just I like that an artist says something to me that makes me feel his music like something "from him", but I trully appreciate that he keeps the blues and rock legacy alive, and also that he very clearly pays tribute to the legends, without hidden it.
I remember watching a video of him and thinking "he's just impersonating Jimmy Page..." and some seconds after, he played some parts of a Led Zeppelin solo note by note. I remember thinking "No, he was impersonating, he was honouring Jimmy Page", and I like it.

If you do ever get to see him live 'you are in for a treat' - his guitar playing/knowledge is exemplary to say the least. Oh yes I love the way he is keeping the Blues alive and in exciting ways. But Joe will always be a close 2nd to 'The master' in my eyes!!

I bet you know but, hes doing a UK tour next year.
Me and my friends are waiting he comes to Spain near us and going to see him, althought we are not fans, there are people to deserve to be seen, like Joe.

Wow! That's a nice LP from Joe. The way "signature" guitars are meant to be made. An affordable guitar, not the collector's piece...
-
There are a few different 'Epiphone' Joe Bonamassa guitars around usually on fleabay and at great prices...

Woke up this morning to find an email with the full 'new' album as a download (I ordered a signed copy) as it is released today!
Shall take a a trip out later this afternoon to pick up the 'Gold' vinyl copy.....
First impressions are that this is lovely and fresh and indeed Joe's singing is now far superior to his 'early' days and the guitar playing is still immense.
I particulary like the singles 'Notches' and 'Time Clocks'......
Grab a listen if you can......

'The loyal kind' is an amazing track, it was written by Joe with Bernie Marsden and was originally going to be on Royal tea...
Mind you the whole album for me is awesome.....The deluxe box set is rather good isn't it? I love the plectrums....

I really try to like his albums, but they just don't work for me. So many promising intros and gorgeous guitar tones, but it's just too predictable.

Oh really, I completely disagree! This time Joe has taken the helm in writing and to be honest he is a good writer! This album has so many power ballads and catchy little tunes and as for the singing/guitar - absolutely sublime. It's no wonder Joe is most probably one of the best guitarists in the world right now! All I suggest is listen hard to this particular album and it just grows and grows into something very, very beautiful.....

For all Blues and/or Joe Bonamassa Fans:
Last friday I got the new CD from Eric Gales, a close friend of Joe's.
I must say it is really superb. >Very Good production (JB and Josh Smith), excellent Guitar work and an All Star Band. At least for me.
Really on repeat since friday.
Give it a listen.
Here a fun video of the first single with a super cool guitar battle at the end.

A friend of mine, outside the Valencia bullring was joking because we might be the younger of the people queuing for the MK concert, and that when MK retire, we should start following a young artist, so we would turn into the oldest fans of him...
He suggested Bonamasa 🤣

Good move! Alas Bonamassa appeals to the young and the old and that was evident when I had my picture reproduced at the Ryman show and later on BluRay!!

So I'm back on the forum after a short break having gained a management position at work. I've also attended an amazing, mind-blowing JB concert at nearby Bournemouth International Centre on the 9th May 2023.
JB was outstanding to say the least and I was impressed with his playing, the amazing backing band, sound and set list - which he does change slightly each night coincidentally!
Set list for Bournemouth:
Evil Mama, Dust Bowl, love ain't a love song, self inflicted wounds, the heart that never waits, I want to shout about it, Double trouble, Django/I didn't think she would do it, a conversation with Alice, happier times, lonely boy, just got paid. Encore: Mountain time
JB was playing just Five UK dates starting at Bournemouth and finishing at Birmingham with dates at Blackpool, Leeds & Newcastle...
Thanks to the BIC manager for the huge poster!!
-
Glad you had fun with JB and the gang.
I did not manage to see him this time round as he left out North-Rhine-Westphalia.
I did not want to drive more than 3 hours to Luxemburg or Mannheim.
The setlist I found also a bit boring and repetitive.
Not so much new stuff since last year.
Despite Josh Smith as a second guitarist is a class on his own.
Lemar Carter on Drums: wonderful
Next time JB

will write a live report soon

Fantastic, congratulations!
I don't really like his music but he seems like a really cool guy.

we just spoke few words, it was very brief
I'm not a big fan of his music neither (too much notes for my taste ;D), I was there for my job :)

Very cool guy indeed. Love his interviews, always interesting. I'm also not a fan of his solo work, but man, does he shine when playing with good singers... I remember hearing the outro of "I'll Take Care Of You" on the radio and thinking "what the f", "I need to know who this player is asap". Blues chops are absolutely phenomenal.

Yeah, I generally find the blues boring and repetitive.
But I love the fact that he appears to maintain his career as a musician solely to fund his pursuit of the coolest vintage guitars on the planet, bravo sir.

here is my chronicle dedicated to Joe's gig :

Nice article JF, blues boring? - not when JB plays!! :lol :lol

I am not a big fan of him either.
But I like the Beth Hart's Live in Amsterdam album very much and I appreciate his playing on that one.
