Title: Is there a video recording of MKs performance on 23 may 1996 at RAH?
Post by: GordonShumway on February 15, 2014, 12:08:36 PM
Hi MK fans,

I've searched the web for hours-and-hours and just cannot find it...

Do you know if a video recording exists of Mark Knoplers performance on 23 may 1996 at the Royal Albert Hall?

There is some agreement on the web, that on that date he performed his best ever Sultans of Swing.

If I'm correctly informed, it is this version that is on the audio CD which comes with the DVD "Sultans Of Swing (The Very Best Of Dire Straits)".

Kind regards,

If Jeroen don't have it, you can be sure that it doesn't exist.... ;)

and yes it's the same recording as featuring on the SOS bonus disc, but this disc has a wrong order (Calling Elvis before WOL) and don't have the outstanding (imho) transition between je suis desole and CE

and I agree that SOS is great, but I'd say it was great for the whole tour imho

Both Pottel and JF, thanks for such a fast reply.
I've mailed Jeroen and await his reply. Perhaps I'll just have to "settle" for the two dates Pottel mentioned.

Although it has to be said that video recordings are more hard to find as newly circulated.  It's always great when we find a new treasure though like the recent Philadelphia '85 show for example. :P

I've asked the RAH itself.
Below you'll find their decent reply.

Dear Gordon,

Many thanks for your enquiry.

Unfortunately the Royal Albert Hall Archive does not hold any video footage of Mark Knopfler's three nights at the Hall from 22-24 May 1996.

My apologies that on this occasion we could not be of assistance.

Kind regards,
Liz
