Title: MK Statistics
Post by: foma on April 03, 2014, 11:10:40 PM
Hey all my fellow get-a-lifers. You know I love lists and I wonder once, how many songs Mark has written up to date? There are many collections, but they lack numbers.

So I decided to do a research. UPDATED 06 April 2014 (12 new changes).

All the DS songs (officially released as Dire Straits):
Total: 60

All the MK solo songs (officially released + DS days + couple of co-written tunes + soundtrack songs):
Total: 140

All the MK instrumental music:
Total: 68 *Double 'The Rocks And The Thunder' tune is not the typo (check original CD), but counts like one tune anyway :)

All the MK unreleased songs:
Total: 16

Overall total: 284 tunes, 200 complete songs (words + music).

Longest DS+MK lyrics: Industrial Disease
Longest MK solo lyrics: Song For Sonny Liston
Shortest DS lyrics: How Long
Shortest DS+MK lyrics: Say Too Much :lol

Size of the all MK and DS lyrics: ~0,2 MB

What did I missed or did wrong? I'll correct all my faults. Let's do the complete and spot-on statistics :)

Whoops, I accidentally put Eastbound Train both to released and unreleased songs. Fixed.

Yes, I think great name for this is 'Get-A-Life In Songs'. I love to find answers for the most ridiculous questions. Biggest lyrics? How many songs?

I was delighted to obtain the original Sultans vinyl single at Christmas ( I gave it to my wife, but amazingly she said you might enjoy this more than i... Ok I said.. )

Hearing the different sultans mix + eastbound train pumping through my phono amp was terrific.

Great work, yet again foma.

Still in the soundtracks section, Fistful of ice cream from Comfort & Joy is missing ! (and what a beautiful track!!!)
The "Robbie the reindeer in the hooves of fire" soundtrack was written by MK, not released as an album and the final song The other side of the moon can be listed in the MK songs section too!
I think I love you too much is a DS song rather than a MK song as it was released in the Knebworth album (1990).
In the Neck and Neck album, MK is credited in There'll be some changes made though it's a cover but the lyrics make references to Money for nothing...

Correct 'Miss Your Blues'
Add 'A Fistful Of Ice Cream'
Correct upper-case I in 'I Dug Up A DIamond'
Recalculate the total

Done, but actually 'A Fistful Of Ice Cream' was on the list! On the first place :)
The Other Side of The Moon is in MK list, too.

Do not be shocked!;D The following titles have MK officially registered as writer. Some titles are clearly works in progession, like "You win some", probably an early version of "Get lucky". But there are some interesting things in this list, hope some floks round here know more...

A STATE OF MIND
AMOUREUX
COSMIC SQUARE DANCE
CROSS MY HEART AND HOPE TO DIE
DID YOU COME
DO WHAT YOU WANNA
DON'T MEAN A THING
ECOLE DU ROCK N ROLL A
FLASHING FOR MONEY
FOR THE WANT OF SOMETHING BETTER
FRENCH CRICKET
GET BUSY
HARD WORK
HOMETIME CUES
HONKY TONK FEVER

I HOPE THAT I DIDN'T
I LOVE, YOU LOVE
I'LL SEE YOU THEN
I'M DOING BETTER NOW
IT'S WHAT I WANT
JONI'S A WAITRESS
LAST SHIP
LETTING GO
LIMO
MARKIN' TIME
MY OWN VIDEO
MY STREET
NO TRUCKS OUT
NOT IN THE FRAME

I'll take Coma as my pseudonym lol! Yes, it took a while, especially to get all the lyrics right and in one place.
Interesting list mschaap. GET BUSY, HOOVES OF FIRE, OVERNIGHT SENSATION released officially as far as I know.

I laughed hard at MARKIN' TIME song :lol ON RAGLAN ROAD clearly is not MK's song.

Added approx. size of all MK lyrics (just ~200 kilobytes).

COSMIC SQUARE DANCE : I believe it's a title on a Chet Atkins record where MK appears, but I don't know if he wrote this track.
FLASHING FOR MONEY : a kind of disco-techno track (by "Deep dish vs dire straits") with a MFN sample
RELAX : a track by Deetah with a Why Worry sample
I LOVE LOVE YOU : a track by John Legend with a TOL sample
ONE OLD SHOE : unreleased track from Wag the Dog ?(I remember  when in 1997 or 98 I came on a university connected computer searching for MK news and I read on a site that MK was working on the WTD soundtrack and a song called One Old Shoe was mentioned).
The french titles (or refering to France) could be tracks left out from Metroland ?

Great lists foma and mschaap!  I did notice The Water is Wide on the last list.  That one isn't MK's either, it was first published in, I think, about 1906 - a bit before his time!   ;D  Cosmic Square Dance is listed on Chet Atkins album Stay Tuned, by Wikipedia, as being written by Atkins, MK, and Paul Yandell.

I have wondered about some of these songs, so it is great to finally see them all in a list.   :thumbsup

Nice!

I Think I Love You Too Much
Seeing In The Dark

I'd say that seeing in the dark is not really an MK tune, but rather an adaptation of dark was the night, cold was the ground

Post by: El Macho on April 04, 2014, 03:19:48 PM
Foma, you could add a section with the few songs MK covered !
On raglan road, The Lily of the west, Lost on the river, You win again, Wonderful world, Restless farewell, Baby let's play house, Blue moon of Kentucky, Seeing in the dark, Wild mountain thyme (A Shot At Glory soundtrack)
Title: Re: MK Statistics
Post by: Lestroid on April 04, 2014, 03:22:33 PM
The song "Good Old Shoe" was performed by Willie Nelson in "Wag the Dog", but according to IMDB.com it was written by Edgar Winter.  The official soundtrack only contained songs written by MK.
Title: Re: MK Statistics
Post by: LoveExpresso on April 04, 2014, 04:57:25 PM
I would only take in "real" songs. I even have problems with the ones in the unknown section - maybe they are just not more than a name only... same goes with the long latest list, only song titles that are saved, not sure if they really do exist.

The idea of a statistic section is really great! Really valuable and would make AMIT even more worth visiting..

And we had the sheet with the complete tour statistics from last year, all songs, played how often etc. That one could be added, too!

Other than that, quite an impressive list.

I just realised on Local Hero soundtrack we have TWO 'The Rocks and the Thunder', tracks 6 and 13. Kinda strange but I included both in the list so it's not to interrupt the beauty of the perfect rows :lol

Never heard of "Seeing in the dark", what is it?

It's a PBS documentary about astronomy which MK made the score for. Heavily inspired by the blues classic 'Dark was the night cold was the ground". Not entirely a coincidence since that song is on the golden disc onboard the Voyager, sent into infinity (?) for other faraway galaxies.

The documentary can be seen here:

Hello foma, I compared your list with mine and I've discovered three songs that I've forgotten. Because of your list, could it be that "Speedway at Nazareth", "Junkie Doll" and "Wild Mountain Thyme" from A Shot At Glory are missing? You might have noticed that already. Otherwise, my and your list contain the same songs.

I've collected songs (at the moment 94) written by other artists, where MK is playing guitar and/or is singing. If anyone is interested, please contact me.

I hope what I'm doing here is OK. I have very little experience with internet forums.
