Title: New photos of Dire Straits in Houston 79, 85 and 92
Post by: Tobben on April 06, 2014, 10:21:07 PM
Hi.

I Just came across this site with a lot of really nice pictures of Dire Straits in Houston i 1979, 1985 and 1992. The pictures from 85 is from the same date that the radio broadcast was from. Really nice pictures for sure! :)

Great photos of the band in their "best" era. I fully understand why photos are watermarked but they didn't need to make them so obtrusive !

Also cool photos of John Travolta. I don't like his early albums though, but the latest one is outstanding indeed.

I don't like it, but to be accurate, the complete name is the Pensa-SHUR MK1, as it was designed and built by John Shur.

see this Ingo's article about Rudy Pensa's behaviour regarding this guitar :

Don't worry, I'm fully aware of the full name and history of this guitar.... ;)

If you mean the Steinberger, I've seen him play MFN on that.

MFN? You're sure? I thought that it was played only on Les Paul in 1985.

Yeah One world would be one I guess, it always had a bit different guitar sound.

the steinberger was used on : one world

and :

MFN and solid rock on the 2nd leg of the tour, e.g. syndney 86

on the first leg of the tour, MFN was played on the LP , and Solid rock was played on the black schecter Tele, e.g. wembley 85

Here's  a link to MFN in one of the Sydney shows - you'll have to sit through 2:55 of intro though. :smack

The first shows when he started using the Steinberger were either the Ottawa or Toronto ones at the end of July (he was definitely using it on 26th in Toronto).  The first date on the N American leg was at Montreal and he used the Les Paul there on MFN.  Interestingly he had changed to the Pensa with Fender neck thing for Sultans at the Montreal show.

Yes I'm found of this kind of details.

Another one : in July (e.g. Wembley arena) Solid rock is played on the black schecter tele, so the guitar was in standard tuning.
while in sydney, the black schecter tele is used on two young lovers, so tuned in open G, and steinberger in standard tuning for MFN and solid rock.

So I wonder : which guitar was tuned in open G for two young lovers in summer 85 ? we don't have a video of this song in the wembley gig.

If it was the same guitar as solid rock it would mean that the guitar tech (Pete brewis or Rone Eve ? can't remember) had to change the tunning during the concert. It's of course possible, but I wonder if it was the case, or if it was another guitar used on two young lovers ?

and another one totally out of subject :
does anyone knows the exact date when Mark wore a headband for the first time ?
I know it's during the LOG tour (he don't have any in wembley 82, and he have one on Alchemy), but when exactly ? spring 83 ? or after the indfidels recordings sessions ?

Right, Steinberger for MFN and SR. Actually it did sound a bit different on the later bootlegs, just as One World, now I know what's been bothering me on these songs... it makes sense. Too rough sound if you ask me. Thanks for the info.

Ok, another offtopic: When did Mark stop using the SG for Two Young Lovers? At the end of Alchemy tour?

If we are into 'firsts', when was the first time Alan Clark was doind the gig? Boston 16 November 1980 is still Roy Bittan, Newcastle 10 Dec Alan's there already.

yes I think so, I can't see Mark using the SG on the BIA tour, but of course I have no proof

To me, Alan has been a band member since the beginning of the tour.
Boston 16 november was only a "one shot" with Roy Bittan as he was there, that's all.
a little bit like David Sanborn in 85

Was it? I mean only oneshot? I thought that on the earlier bootlegs (e.g. San Fran), Roy was introduced, but last I heard these was like 5 years ago, so I am not sure.

this is what is explained in the Oldfield book :

Alan was recruited before Hal Lindes. at least, his story is told before Hal's one, so obviously before the tour started.

"When they played in LA, there was a surprise : Roy Bittan came on stage to play on Tunnel of love, and to repoduce the keyboard part he had done in studio."
so it seems only for this song, not the full show.
"Roy Bittan was in LA because Springsteen played shows in LA at the same time."

On every bootleg doesn't mention Roy Bittan neither on Boston or LA.

Does anyone knows if Roy is introduced on the LA show ?

two young lovers on the BIA tour 1985 was played with the Erlewine Automatic, nicknamed pig, used in industrial disease. In 1986 with black tele Schecter.

How much a headband without doubt that he began using in concert March 1983 in Australia and New Zealand.
