Title: Crowfly Recordings
Post by: SamGolden on November 28, 2008, 05:43:47 PM
I launch a new topic :
for you, hard die fans, what is the best live recordings in the Crowfly productions of Sangri-La Tour?

For me, i know that the Lyon 2005 concert is my best one, because i was there and also i love the versions of the recording....

My favourite is the RAH 30th May 2005.  Telegraph Road is particularly good.  I like the Nashville one too.  :)

Nashville is great my friend, but I know you like Lyon, don't you ? Sailing to Philadelphia is great on that one, you may say... Brighton is nice too. Great sound, very clear.

I have a concert of Shangri-Lille, made my poupystar (IF my memory is right) and I like that one! .......For the specialists amongst us, is Lyon better then Lille? ::)

All great, but I still love Salt Lake City.  Maybe because it was my first.    ;D

Fieneke

Fieneke, in my opinion the Lyon concert is a bit better than the Lille concert, probably because it was earlier in the tour. But, the version of Sultans Of Swing from Lille is one of my favorites and among the best I've heard in my opinion.

I wasn't aware that there was a Crowfly recording of the Lille concert, but SOS was certainly very good on the Shangri-Lille DVD.  I like SOS very much on the Nashville Crowfly recording too.   :)

There's no ;) Only an audience recording from Lille exists, which sounds pretty good by the way, and which was used for the 'Shangri-Lille" DVD...

Lyon is really nice, but I love Italian shows so much... :)
I like the very "hot and warm" atmosphere of the Florence 12/06/2005 concert...couldn

There were 14 shows that were put by Crowfly as whole concerts (New York Radio City show had some tracks released separately, but not the whole show). Can someone list for me the 14 shows that were available?

Thank you (also, what tracks were released for Radio City. I know 2 came out as bonus tracks and Guy released 3 more)

Cheers

Me personally, I don't have any feelings, I just don't understand what's the problem with selling freaking mp3 files? It's like all on the cloud, no shipping, no packaging, no anything. Mark will never stop surprising me :lol

At least they sell 2019 and 2015 shows, what a gesture.

You have to "clic" on the "The Legends Series ..." ad, on "Preorder now" (no worry, nothing to pay at this step), and you have, on the right, the menu with the old recordings  (2005, 2010, 2013, 2015, 2019).

they were always only available in lossy format. as were the later ones. it is only as of 2015 i believe, that flac was added. still, this is great news.

I still don’t see it  ??? I only see the “best of” list of songs available from the 2005 tour that comes with the package.

This is great news ideed.
It does not seem to offer anything we don't already have, or in a better format. What was once available is available again, period. Still, I am quite happy. I like to know that downloads are officials !

Also, it is interesting to see what Mark (or his management) think what the best versions are for each tour. I noticed in particular that for them, the best TR (among the only 15 available) for 2005 is Lyon (on the strat, not the pensa). I agree with them, I have always said that this one was really special, so they seemed not to have chosen randomly, for once :)

Just a couple of things I wonder:

1) I can't understand why this is not more explicit on the web site. You have to hack into it, and pretend to preorder the toy guitar to see the live recordings ! No chance for non-geeks to get that ! I hope this will be fixed soon.

2) Guy has always said that he has been recording all the shows since 2005, independently from Crowfly/Simfy/Bleeker. This should give hope to get 2005 shows is 320kbs instead of 192 (although I find they sound great), more 2005 shows, the 2008 shows (although I think 2010 shows are better and we don't miss much appart from TLWNF), and everything in FLAC. So Guy, what are you waiting for to release your own recordings ?

3) Seems that hopes for 1996 and 2001 are gone :( They were fantastic shows, maybe the best, although 2005, 2010 and 2019 come close...

4) Can we still have hopes for 2002 ? A couple of years ago "Quality shoe" was released on Mark's youtube channel, and WAM was once released as well, so I guess they recorded these ones too...

1. Looks they are still setting up and not all recordings that were once available are available yet, for example, 2010 and 2013 Spanish concerts.

2. Apparently they were not carefully with those recordings in the sense that they have lots of hard disks with unlabeled material, so being busy with new music and tours don't let them time to look backwards.

3. Again, same answer.

4. Again, same answer

Good to see recordings from previous tours being made available again. I can’t see it happening for the foreseeable future, but it’d be lovely to have some recordings made available from the Kill to Get Crimson tour. I’d love to hear a soundboard recording from that tour. I think Mark and the band took the performances to another level in all aspects at that point. Great memories of the show I went to see in Brighton that year.

It is a missed oppertunity that you only can pay with credit card. I would have seen also a Paypal option to pay because I don't have a credit card.
And the downloads from the Get Lucky and Privateering tour aren't all the shows you could buy in the past if i compar it with the list from the On Every bootleg website.

It was issued in WMA@192 with DRM.

Did I miss something?
Was the master recording only in 192? I would have guest that the master being uncompressed.
Did they lose the master recording ?

They make it so difficult because they are not public yet, as they didn't finished uploading. The fact that we can access through that other way is probably because they are just testing it.

When everything is uploaded, it should be visible in the shop main page. It is just that we are on every tiny detail and discover everything, lol

Quick update on this one. I've just ordered the 2005 Milan recording through the MK store. I had it already but some files were incomplete (my oldest CD-R have started to die…).

The description under the videos uploaded on MK's Youtube channel says that "complete recordings are available in 320Kpbs mp3 format. That would have been cool beans but… nope. They're exactly the same as when first released, that's to say a 128Kpbs mp3 format. I didn't bother leaving a comment on the YT channel, not very important anyway. That said, those recordings still sound much better than all that came after that, especially the 2013-2019 recordings that I personally never liked.

Shall I add that you pay for 5 downloads, unlimited in time, which ain't bad. I hope this helps, if some of you are willing to buy.

Fingers crossed for more from the 2002-2010 years now (complete tours or something like that).

Yes they were almost as good as the 2005 recordings, which I would rank #1 despite high compression. The 2010 were close and then what followed didn't sound half as good in my opinion.

Well, I was talking about the recordings but if you're asking me, both actually. Not that the latter performances aren't good but I much prefer the 2002-2010 band incarnation than what followed. I would have liked to see more of Robbie McIntosh and Geraint Watkins alongside MK. Both match well with MK's music, I think.

Indeed, Robbie rules ! (not too sure about Geraint being best suited for MK's music).
I was lucky enough to see John Illsley with Robbie in Saint-Julien in 2019. Since Mark didn't play Sultans that year I was glad to have their version, really not bad actually. And since I never had a chance to hear DS play TOL and WDYTYG, it was great to hear their takes on them, not the real thing but nonetheless very enjoyable !
I also prefer Danny to Ianto on drums (well in 2019 we got both of them, so the renditions of MFN and WAM were stellar IMHO). On Speedway Danny has the edge !
