My first reaction is - I feel rather underwhelmed.   I was expecting more of MK than only two tracks and much more of his guitar!    :-\

Most songs are JJ Cale classics. A few decent ones but not really his best, I mean nothing rocking ...
Very disappointing set.  :disbelief

3 tracks mean nothing to me though :  Someday, songbird and Train to nowhere.
Very interesting to have Mark on 2 tracks that are new to me.
I'm very excited to hear those two songs. ;D

Thank you for the information!
Great news! And great tracklist! Of course I would love more songs and an actual collaboration with J.J., but this is the second best, since he is gone. So this would be the first studio release where EC and MK meet!

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K0X1PYM/ref=cm_sw_su_dp

I really don't remember Someday and Train to nowhere, songs. I wonder if they are new songs (unreleased Cale songs) or old songs using different title (ridin' home, Cherry) Any info?

Something to look forward to. JJ Cale songs and a bunch of interesting performers - some familiar and some less so (to me, anyway). I've passed the information to mrs twm.

It is a strange thing with me and EC. I've seen him live quite a few times but never been to one of his concerts. He's guested at some shows I've attended and I was at the first ever major performance by Cream (Windsor Jazz Festival in 1966 - they'd played a club in Manchester beforehand and weren't called Cream on the festival handbill, just the three individual names) and I saw Derek and the Dominoes (in the 1970s at Green's Playhouse in Glasgow) but no EC concert.

Perhaps the most interesting prospect is how they will approach the songs. One of Cale's attractions is his musical style  and delivery. In other words, will they stick to what we know or will they try to interpret or update the songs in some way? I don't much mind either way.  I also attended the  "Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Celebration Concert" and thought at the time that EC's reworking of those songs was one of the best things that night - and this has just been confirmed by my watching the recent DVD (re)issue.

Great stuff! You could say I'm looking forward to this album.

Another thing is that, whilst two of The Yardbirds went to the same school as I did (a couple of years ahead of me), I never saw them live either. Around the time EC played with them, I never felt them an authentic r'n'b band. "People from my area and particularly from my own school can't play the blues", I thought. I was going to see the likes of Muddy Waters, Little Walter, John Lee Hooker, Sonny Boy Williamson #2, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Son House, Sleepy John Estes and their like in that period. The strange thing is that EC had a similar, very purist view at the time.

GREAT NEWS!

So I asked Guy this question:
Hi Guy! Great to hear Mark plays on the JJ Cale appreciation cd by Eric Clapton and friends! Were you involved in this and can you tell me/us where it was recorded? About the recording of Mark's own new recording, I hope everything is going well and is on schedule, could you tell when we can expect a new diary entry with some great stories and pictures? Kind regards, Klaas Bouke http://www.whereseric.com/eric[...]

Answer:
Yes, Mark was involved on two tracks and I was there to lend an ear where needed. It was really lovely to see Mark and Eric playing guitar together, at the same time. These tracks were recorded at BG. Simon Climie (producer) and Alan Douglas (engineer) did a fine job.

So does this mean the whole cd was recorded at BG or just the 2 songs Mark is on?
Does somebody know?

I would think "these tracks" means just the two with Mark were BG recordings. Fits as he rarely seem to leave that building anymore... even promo interviews, EPK videos and other stuff is always coming directly from the studio... Kingdom of Sound...

Must be quite a thrill for Mayer to be in the same crowd as this list. Sensible commercially, & the boy can play quite tastefully (on his albums at least.)

I was afraid the results of this collaboration would sort of disappear... Glad to see it happen.

It shows that Mark is a very clever/wise man. I don't know these songs either. As far as I know they have not been released. Or they must have been on a B-side of a single. People will always compare the songs with the original. Covering the well know songs is kinda dangerous effort for a professional musician, cause when you cover it you must be able to surpase the original. Which in Cale's case is almost undoable. Why would you else put this tribute cd in your cd player if you can put a compilation album of Cale on?
Anyway, this way no one can complain or say Mark fucked up.

Nice song. How I love that guitar tone... he could just record 2 hours of noodling around with a Strat and I would buy it anytime...

But I still don't know where this song comes from - it is apparently on no album of JJ Cale, isn't it. So did MK write this song himself actually?
Kaleo, mentioning 41 years implies that you know where it is from? Same with the other MK tribute song btw.

Please enlight me!

Funny, the last two posts perfectly sum up what I thought this morning while listening.... the thrill EVERY time when a new MK tune shows up.. really exciting to listen to the latest results... and also the idea that probably nobody on the Breeze album from all the famous artists will be able to make a better JJ Cale contribution in style, mood, vocal and guitar... even EC will lose this competition..

Really like this one.  Sorry to put a slightly negative spin on what is really a positive thread but it is a pity it takes Mark to cover someone else's song on a record with EC in order for him to play the guitar these days and do a song at it's proper pace.

Yes.  Simply because I love Mark doing what he does best and utilising his talent instead of wasting it. :)

great tone, great playing, great laid back atmosphere...well it's typically THE kind of style/song/guitar tone that made us love Mark's music, right ?

JF, absolutely right! But the fusion from this kind of music with celtic roots, which is also something very elementary and typical of Mark (local hero / cal e.g.), is very interesting. The blending of different styles of music, the exploring and looking for new staff and inspiritation is something i would miss a lot. It makes Mark very special and i think all fans who followed this process (with up and downs) constantly are very special people too. I know, that it is not easy. I had my problems as well, like everybode here, i presume,
So i love the JJ Cale style of music (of course), but i can't imagine Mark playing for over 40 years the same kind of music. AND - I'm somehow shocked how easy it seems to be for Mark to play this kind of music. He is far beyond this level!

It's got that unmistakable Knopfler-kind of groove. That wonderful slacking beat with the snare drum just in the right place. It's THAT sound, and I love everytime I hear MK cutting tracks that has that groove in it.

Well, keep in mind that this is actually JJ Cale-stuff, the "Tulsa sound"...  ;)

Lots of influences but all in all it's quite straightforward Americana. It's hard to make this kind of music NOT to sound good.

But then again, "Privateering" is way way way better stuff than "KTGC". So yes, the last couple of years have been a clear step-up.

edit... Can't tell which I'm anticipating more right now. This release or the upcoming four weeks summer's vacation.  ;D

Hm.

I prefer everything from Get Lucky to Privateering from this pretty monotonic ratteling boring stuff to be honest...

And MK busy talking about an "interesting concept" and "a couple of theories" flying around.. about an unreleased song?  Nice to hear that at least he seems to talk about the meanings of songs from others, whereas it seems he doesn't like people to get too much knowledge about his own stuff.

Some like "Fizzy and the still" others like "Corned beef city". I agree with Tally, both songs from the tribute are top class-Knopfler stuff.

But LE, isn't it always easier to talk about others than about yourself?  :)

Of course it is!! I was thinking about the "frustration" that creeps in when thinking too much about certrain lyrics (example: In The Sky) and you are just not able to find the one key, the one single word that maybe offers the solution to crack the code of some of his songs.

I like "Someday" very much and judge that one as a "real" Knopfler gem with phantastic guitar playing and some fresh licks. As said before, with the vocals of EC and Mr. White, I have trouble to see "Train to Nowhere" as a full Knopfler song. I was able to listen to 1:10 min previes at iTunes, and it is not giving very much to me. Buch each to his/her own, as you said!  ;)

JJ has produced at least 9 LPs (his first 9 btw) of great music that I have been listening to for the last 25 years. Also he has been a great influence (apart from MK and EC) to all american music,  through the covers of his songs, from famous and multi platinum selling bands like  Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kansas, Dr. Hook, etc.
MKs covers are the closest to the JJ Cale sound these songs can get, since his guitar licks and his singing - wording are closer than anyone else's.

As for what one like and doesn't like, I find that my "barometer" for such things is the number of "spins" and the length of time I have given to the records. I dare say that DS records have received the most plays but it is hard to beat nowadays with all these things going in our lives as "grown ups", even if I constantly play only the MK solo records. That said I find the lyrics fine but I don't have any urge to break the code! They work fine in the back of my mind, forming their own stories using my personal knowledge and experiences.

Nice track. Lyrics are mixed low but I guess that fits with Cale's style.

The guitar riff is reminiscent of Used to Could. Nice groove.

Is the guitar interplay Mark and Clapton?

Is the guitar interplay Mark and Clapton?

Yes it's sounds like

I'd say that Mark is playing both the heavy rhythm and the clean lead on left/center channel (pan around 10:00), while EC is on crunch lead on right/center channel (pan around 2:00)

Mark is heard alone from  1:15 to 1:29
and typical lick at 1:00

EC is heard alone from 3:21 to 3:38

I've downloaded it and gave it a first listening. I love what our man is doing, but must also say that i love the contributions of John Mayer. Magnolia is magnificient and also "Don't wait" is good. Of course Christine Lakeland adds also the original JJ Cale feeling to it.
So a good effort by Eric Clapton. The songs with Mark, John Mayer and Christine Lakeland I like the most. :clap

The others? --- Hm, i'll give them a second listening  :-\

I was happy to find in stores today.
Without any surprise, the two most interesting tunes are Someday and Train to nowhere. That was very smart of EC to ask Mark to play unreleased material.  :thumbsup

The set list is clearly not the best JJ but the covers are nice. I wish there were more rocking tunes.

The booklet is interesting : lots of pictures with familiar faces  ???  :think

No, we don't.   I just heard it drop through the letterbox, so presumably it came by courier, unless Royal Mail have started working on Sundays.

I've listened to the album a few times now and in general I think it's very good.  I like MKs two songs very much and Train to Nowhere is, indeed, growing on me, as I knew it would.   I like Tom Petty's three songs - especially as they're from one of my favourite JJ albums, 'Okie'.  They're a bit close to the original, but that's OK with me.   The only one I'm having difficulty with is Starbound, but I'll give it time.

It's a very good tribute to JJ!    :)

There are lots of pictures, mostly very small ones.   There are two with MK, one we have seen from when he sang with JJ and  another very small one in BG I presume.   I have scoured the pages, but can find no reference to anything having been recorded at British Grove.   :(

Yes, Mark was involved on two tracks and I was there to lend an ear where needed. It was really lovely to see Mark and Eric playing guitar together, at the same time. These tracks were recorded at BG. Simon Climie (producer) and Alan Douglas (engineer) did a fine job.

That's what Guy posted in April

Yes, of course, I remember reading about that.   It's a bit strange that BG isn't mentioned in the booklet though.  In fact no recording studio is mentioned, only Gateway Mastering.

Yes, i like the spirit of it too. EC shows his respect. I like also the sequence of the songs, starting with jj's first song on his debut album "call me the breeze" to the meaningful closing number crying eyes (together with christine). And it's a well made album...

And isn't it wonderful to have new JJ Cale songs on it? And our man plays them?

Thanks for the link, superval!!

The following really hit home for me.  I think because I always thought J.J. wanted fame and fortune.  Now I see that it may not have been desired at all...:
Interviewer: From the interviews I've heard with J.J. Cale, he didn't really seem to mind that he never became famous in the way you did. Do you think he cared?

Eric Clapton: I think he found it inconvenient to be pestered by people about what he did for a living. I think he saw his job, or his vocation as a musician, on the same sort of scale as someone who likes to do landscape gardening, or an architect. He just thought it was something you could develop a skill at, be good at, get some satisfaction. I don't think he recognized that all of the other paraphernalia was necessary. And, in truth, if he had been held to account for that, it would have taken up too much time for him to do the work he did.

Interviewer: So it was a benefit in that sense?

Eric Clapton: I mean, I wouldn't change anything. For me he was a beacon in a philosophical sense, because I needed to know that there was someone else out there that didn't want all those trappings. When I was growing up in the rock and roll school in England, in the '60s, it just seemed to be a given that everyone was going to end up on TV. The ambition was to have a Top 10 single, to get a recording contract. I felt really alone in the fact that I just wanted to become reasonably good at what I was doing, at playing music. I kind of intuitively knew that that stuff was distracting and counterproductive and mind-distorting.

I never talked to him too much about it. But he lived in a way that I thought was a good model for someone who wanted to pursue music as a serious vocation, without getting too bogged down in all of the peripheral stuff.

Pottel, the deluxe box and 4 vinyl versions are exclusive (at least for the time being) from Surfdog. They haven't started sending yet, but they promised they will this week, for the deluxe CDs box. As for the 4 vinyl set, they claim they have a problem at the pressing plant and it will be at least 4 weeks until they have and another 2-4 weeks until the orders are dispatched. Amazon.com did send the regular CD release (haven't received it yet though),and they are shipping now the double vinyl, which was also delayed until today.

That explains why EC tours every year in Japan, some European countries and some US cities, and of course the Crossroads festival.

I heard EC complaining about touring for years, while touring every year. Could this complaining finally his last?

I think he loves to play, and if he finally means it, maybe some dates at the Rah or and English cities near London, would be his only live shows in the future...

I don't care how he feel about touring but he has a great fidelity for his friend and musical heroes. Howling Wolf, JJ... And i learned from this interview and some other, that MK is always so distant to the other artists and guitar player exept the great Chet. Especially with the high profile musicians.

I never explored JJ's music (other than Clapton covers) but am now discovering the beauty of the man...sheer genius, but so understated and unassuming. My kinda guy. I now also have an appreciation for John Mayer...always thought he was a pop singer who played for the chikitas, but he seems to have real substance. I guess I will be buying some JJ Cale and John Mayer CDs soon!

As for Mark, our hero...no need to say anything, we all know the special place he holds in our hearts. BUT, I don't understand why he is so uncomfortable speaking off the cuff?!?!?! Look at Clapton...so comfy, and then look at Marko...struggling for words. At least we know he's real. I'd probably be the same way!

Clapton is white mans blues. White man made the blues by enslaving black men. Clapton racist i think

Hardships in life do not discriminate. Black, white yellow or red. Everybody can have a hard life, due to other people's greed or racist attitude. And the stereotypes we have about slavery and racism, although still valid in smaller numbers in the human kind, have been replaced with other forms of slavery and racism that are much worse because they hurt as well, but are harder to tell and fight against. Your three sentences building of thoughts is a house of cards.
Read Clapton's autobiography, to see his shattered world. Born in a post war UK, his mother leaving him to his grandparents to raise him, to avoid the stigma of being "illegitimate" and yet not succeeding. Losing a child later in life. Whatever success he may be having, is experienced through these filters. And he always looked back at the blues, apart from his deep appreciation for the music and the musicians because he could relate with their hardships.

Clapton had been playing with black musicians like Nathan East, Greg Phillinganes, Steve Ferrone etc etc for years so for me, Clapton is no racist at all.

When he drunk and consume drugs he was out of his mind most of the time so I give that speech zero value.

Did you read his autobiography?

He had apologised by his drunk era every chance he had, and he still does. At those times he had admitted to behave like a moroon most of the time, and having played not only with that musicians but also with people like Robert Cray (they cowrote a song...) and many other black blues musicians.

I have no doubts.

Clapton had been playing with black musicians like Nathan East, Greg Phillinganes, Steve Ferrone etc etc for years so for me, Clapton is no racist at all.

They say that the things you spurt out when you're drunk are the things that are on your mind and are your true feelings.  The things you keep bottled up when you're sober!

I agree to this! Hes probably voting UKIP too haha.

There are plenty of white musicians to play with, look MK, he never had a black musician playing with him, so, if Clapton was a racist, why playing with so many black musicians in his band? Nonsense.

Ok Clapton is not a racist then, it just so happens that he refers to black people as .  "i used to be into dope but now i'm into racism".....nothing wrong here

OK, all. Even though I do not have time to search and despite the fact that the video Geordie_60 posted, mentions that this is an alleged speech and this video implying, it might be true ( https://youtu.be/J4f1OF1zpIU  )  I believe that we need way more solid evidence to make any accusations. Not about the rant containing racist remarks, but if Clapton was a racist. Obviously he is not any more.  Anyway, I think that racism has different meaning in each country and each time of history.

With the passing of time, younger people tend to judge very strictly the views of the older people from other times. Sometimes they even forget that the lack of "sensitivities" was because the societies functioned differently.  According to the second video, and trying to see it in a positive way, I think that Clapton in that time was thinking that there was a radical change in the places he knew and lived and he didn't like it. He was coming from an older society and he was trying to adopt and live in the new world, as it was coming to form. It is a matter of what words you would use to describe it, and from which side of the "time fence"  you are looking. (Always talking for the video that replies to the accusations)   Maybe some of his comments were too raw, coming at a bad time, being high or whatever. But really, I don't think we should cast any stones, because he is a different man now.

Back to the original topic, with this one: https://youtu.be/Kjt0kR3GAME

Amen to this.

Geordie, I have amended your post. Racist language will not be tolerated on Amit, even if you claim to be quoting Eric Clapton.

Consider this a friendly warning to think before you type in future.

Agree Dusty! We all have raised  emotions at the release of this great piece of work. We all need to take a deep breathe, and concentrate on what we post. Personal & hurtful name calling posts don't fit the atmosphere that we are aiming for here. We all have different views and opinions on various situations from each other, depending on our own perceptions and how we decipher information based on that. As I said in previous posts, AMIT if a happy & friendly, but also very tolerant place to visit. It is great to have differing opinions and having a place to express them, is even better, but let's all remember the rights of others to have an opposite view. If we try to have a softer, kinder approach to things this place remains happy, and it sets a standard for other forum's to follow.

Happy Easter to all at A Mark In Time forum  :wave :clap

PS If you have put any personal stuff in previous posts....? mabye think about a quick edit?

Good question.

I saw picturs of thst super deluxe, it looks like the picture where you can see Guy, originally features Guy and MK but that picture is only in full in the deluxe, and in the rest of the editions you can see only Guy because it is cut.

I got it! Both are very different. Someday has a very distinct synth, and is a bit slower. It has no harp and it sounds like a demo (which must be the case) The similarity  is the way they sing !
Train to nowhere sounds a bit honky tonkish! Piano gives the rhythm with a guitar following!

Not so much guitar on either.

Dear Vgonis,

Most of us bought the simple edition CD.
Would you share those 2 songs?  :hmm
I know it's not very in the spirit of this forum but it could be great for most of us, as these songs are not downloadable and only available in this very expensive box set... (I just want to say that I have all the MK box sets : GL, P and T)
