So, if the release date is 1st September and the GNR concert is on 4th September, it must be a playback performance on the night. I had hoped it would have been recorded live on the 4th and then made available for download.
I think there have been many better performances of Going Home than this one. This sounds distorted and there's also added clapping and cheering for effect! :think Anyway, it's for a good cause, that's the main thing. :)

Sorry, Val, forgive my ignorance, but which version are you referring to?
I thought a re-release would mean, well, re-releasing the old version? Is there a version we can listen to already? ??? ???

Apparently the new release is a 'live' 2014 version, which I presumed was what SL has posted, with an old video accompanying it. Anyway it can't be a 'live' performance on Thursday if the download is available tomorrow.
-
Ah! I see now from YouTube that the version posted is NOT the new digital release! :hmm
-
OK, it is Sept. 1st now and there is a snippet available at amazon.co.uk. Wanted to download it but forgot that for UK I had to rewrite my payment information again and had my credit card not at hand. Will happen tonight. What I can say is that it sounds definitely like a 2010 live version. I compared the first few bars with Glasgow and Newcastle, mainly the audience reations, because the notes are played very similar, both by Mark and John.
So it is not a new recording. I have not all Get Lucky recordings so I am not sure how often Going Home was played on that tour...
LE
-
If there is sax, it can be from Privateering tour. In Get Lucky tour the ending song was Piper, but I think GH got played once or twice.
-
just downloaded it , defo 2013 with nigel on saxophone
-
So, will the performance on the night be a genuinely live performance, or playback, I wonder?
-
Defo?
-
Defo?
Definitely! ;D
-
I cant buy it from itunes because im in Spain... Nice.
I will try amazon etc, im sure i have that version but i wanted to buy it and help the fund rising...
Edit: Amazon doesnt work for me either, I need an UK credit card...
Well, I am very sorry by the fund rising that will lost several downloads from people outside the UK >:(

If this article is anything to go by then it'll be live:

Mark says he is "looking forward to being there to play Local Hero once more." He said it!

It also says "Mark Knopfler and his band" so who will be in the band, I wonder? :think

On Oldfiled's Crises album, "Ant" is credited on guitar, for Moonlight shadow, and maybe Crises (not sure)
is it a common nickname ?

I also couldn't get it from itunes or amazon either, but have just managed to get it from hmv here:-

They take paypal also which for me made it quick & easy.

Tony is the most common one, yes.

Wouldn't it have been great if the live performance on the day itself was the release. Didn't want to risk it though because he's not played live for a wee while!
-
Thought the same :)

Sounds very much like it with Nigel on sax. How many shows did Nigel play?
From Glasgow till last RAH + the US shows? Did he also play Germany?
Of the mp3's that I have my most likely match is 2013-10-27, Oakland\#69
-
Yeah, Nigel did also the July part in Germany, Cologne, Halle etc.
It is somehow typically unprofessional not to verify the source of the recording, isn't it? I bet Guy has already a lot of questions about that for his next
forum update..

Yes, it's tonight at 8.30pm. I'm disappointed, because I had read that it was going to be broadcast on BBC2 live, but according to the schedules, that's not so. I think the concert maybe included in the actual race on Sunday morning, but how and when I don't know! :think

Its on BBC2 sunday schedule, I programmed it with Filmon and I will upload the recording to youtube. The programme its called "Athletics" and will show highlights of the show from today.
The things is if maybe today any news report will show something of it...

I just turned on the local Northeast & Cumbria news and the reporter was saying that we had just missed Mark Knopfler rehearsing for the show and then the cameras showed MK leaving the stage, carrying his red Fender. He was wearing a flat cap and a suede jacket and he didn't look at the camera. Then there was a fairly long interview with Sting and Jimmy Nail. Sting said he was looking forward to hearing Mark playing Local Hero (sic)!

Nice reporting Val. Good to have our roving reporter on AMIT keeping us up to date! :thumbsup
Too bad he ignored the camera. Obviously knew that a glance would have involved having to stop for an interview! ::)

So do we know how long he played? Did he only play Going home? Or what set lits?
Or we he play later tonight ? I haven't follow anything :hmm :lol :lol

Thanks for that Dutchessy.
A bit rusty, especially at the start but not too bad. Pity the sax was a bit high in the mix though. Probably done deliberately by Mark because he didn't want any foul-ups to be noticed.

Thanks everyone for the videos, etc. As has been said already, the sax was a bit too loud. I wonder if it was Nigel playing? :think
-
In one of the videos it clearly looks like Nigel. I wonder who the rest of the band was, mcIntosh on guitar but cant recognize bass, Keyboards and drums.

I agree about Nigel. He finishes the final few notes in a rather unique way - that is his signature.

I heard that BBC will broadcast this event this Sunday. So it would be great if someone on the UK could record it.

Pampli, read my previous posts, I
-
I can't really understand when people say the sax is too loud... for starters, that would be closer to the original recording and also, it's another crappy recording tbh... (as in sound quality). I don't get how we can seriously judge it without either being there or hearing a soundboard recording. Anyway, great to hear it, even if the quality is flaky.
-
Here's some highlights from the whole evening to give you an idea of the show. Only a few seconds of Mark at the start but the rest of the show looked to be good:

Now I have the know-how. Thanks SL1!

Thanks dmg! I think it's Guy on keyboards and I suspect the person on bass is the one from various showcases, whose name escapes me at the moment. So, Mark, Guy, Robbie, Nigel and possibly the bass player from the showcases. I don't recognise the drummer.

Dudley Phillips ? Marcus Cliff?

Dudley Phillips! :smack Thanks! :)

From the attached pic I'd say the bassist is Dave Bronze, who's been touring with Clapton lately.

Fab piccie!! Looking forward to watching the programme tomorrow morning! :wave

That version sounded great to my ears.
And yes, the bass player looks exactly like Clapton's back in 1996. (And perhaps more recently)

woohooo!! - I recognise that Stratocaster and tune!!
Great coverage on the opening of the programme!
Nice shots of MK playing with 'Going Home' music used for the opening titles..... :clap

Not enough of MK and the band though! I hoped we would see the whole performance! Maybe we will see it again in full later in the programme, hopefully. :think Mark seems to be wearing a bracelet on his right wrist. :)

Oooh, Hadn't noticed the bracelet?! - I will look later on the recording.....
No, I agree there was not enough MK and band on film but at least 'Going Home' was played almost in it's entirety!

I'm recording it with filmon, when I get home this evening I will check the recording and upload the Mk part to YouTube.

Val,
Mark wearing bracelet ! Wow ! That's new ! Good notice Val! Will we be seeing earing next. Love those earing days. He looked so damn s e x y! ;D

Who are Chase and Status and why their performance was broadcasted and MK only got some fast snippets with the song on background?
-

I have never heard of Chase and Status and I don't know what their performance had to do with Newcastle! I felt MK and the band were not given the airtime they deserved, especially as what little they had was constantly interrupted by speeches, etc! We hardly had a glimpse of MK and even less of the band - don't think I saw Guy at all! I'm pretty angry! >:(
-
I hope Mk is featured in this evening programme about the race on the bbc2

This is supposed to be the full coverage, but MK is not there at all! :hmm
-
Who are Chase and Status and why their performance was broadcasted and MK only got some fast snippets with the song on background?
Exactly. Going Home is the anthem of the GNR and we only got about 2 seconds of footage! Sometimes I think the low profile he likes to keep is only to our cost. :(
-
As promised, my recording of the brilliant broadcast that the great BBC2 made of the perfomance of the Great North Run hymne by the geordie Mark Knopfler
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTz8hJtyBFw&feature=youtu.be
Is not so good as the "Chase and Status" perfomance which are very important and significant for the city and the run, but close to the one by Sting and Jimmy Nail, another couple of geordies.
-
Thank you, jbaent for that recording and thank you BBC for your excellent coverage of MK's performance! ::)
-
It's always a pleasure to contribute to this great community.
-
From what I could make out, through all the talking over it, it sounded almost like Mark was just playing fills between the lead sax; his guitar was near inaudible.
I saw this yesterday and Sting with Jimmy Nail got about 5 minutes full uninterrupted coverage. >:(
-
From what I can deduce from various coverage, including this "full coverage" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZuO9PwbpLE is that the main part of the show was the "story" of Newcastle and the GNR. I don't think MKs performance was part of it and was something that happened before the official show started. I may be wrong - I often am, but this doesn't account for the abysmally short clip!
Maybe someone who was actually there can shed more light on this? :think
-
I've got to say from what I saw that Tim Healy did a wonderful job.
-
Sad to say that this was one of the poorer versions I`ve heard in a while :-\
-
Yeah, if you would ask Mark he would probably say that it was just a little gesture without too much meaning apart from the Geordie thing and that it definitely does not deserve seven pages at any fan forum! ;D ;D

-

I don't think he's really played a genuinely great version since 2002. The last great one was Beaulieu 2002 and it makes recent ones sound pretty amateur.

I agree that the version at the GNR was very disappointing, especially after having heard so many good versions on the last tour, either with Nigel or without him and I've listened to many that I didn't attend that were great too! Beaulieu was OK, but I liked 2013 versions much more - sorry! :)
-
yep the 2013 versions were definitely my favourite ones in years too.
-
Difficult to beat alchemy version imho
Other versions I like very much are 96 ones : no sax but much more improvising in the solo, and amazing tone on the LP. Hamburg is a very good example.

nice version although Mark doesn't play on "verse/bridge/B" theme. nice licks during the intro
it's the only one version I know played on the orignal 61 strat (I mean for Going Home, of course wild theme was played on it during STP tour)

That's really the main difference though (the intro's) because the rest is always the same. The intro on this one is inspired and has a far better tone.
Of course nothing can beat Wild Theme from the 1998 Hillbillies gigs for me but that's not really comparable.

in 96 the rest was not always the same. at the end of solo, he did some (little) improvisation, at least he was going a little bit out of the melody, and it made the tune more "live" I may say, less "comfort zone"

I was never overly fond of the distortion on his LP on this song on the GH tour. Very un-Mark like.

yes but : it was the original tone on the studio version.
We all have the alchemy version in head, but we forgot that the studio version was with distortion for the lead, while the intro arpegios were on acoustic.
And I find that this tone suited very well with the overall tone he had for the GH tour. Distortion was also used on other songs which had clean sound in orginal version (the bug, water of love)
usually I prefer the strat than the LP, but I like wild theme on LP + heavy tone during 2001 promo tour (version on the STP maxi) or at Montserrat.
it strange that he came back to the red schecter in 97-99
