Sounds like it, Guy did say on his forum a few weeks back that Evelyn Glennie had been at British Grove Studios.

could it be the "other project" that Guy was talking about, and making a joke saying he was mixing another album for a "well known artist " ? :think ::)

Only co-writing?  Isn't that a first for Mark, if you exclude that "copied" (though credit given) tune on Privateering with Mark's lyrics.

you can add money for nothing with Sting ;)

and I'd say that most of stuff on last exit and princess bride is in fact "co-wrote" (or "co-composed" to be accurate) with Guy although it's not officially mentionned

and there is also telegraph road which is a little bit co-composed with Alan Clark in a certain way, but I won't go on another debate... ;)
(just saying this because I was listening to TR San Remo 81 just few minutes ago, and it's obvious that lot of stuff on this song comes from a pianist's mind so to say)

And don't forget all the songs he had stolen from Robert Marshall, the real genius behind Dire Straits heydays
 ;D ;D ;D

Can you believe I forgot about MFN!  :o

MFN co write  is really a stupid thing. The use of the tune of don't stand so close to me, is really far fetched. And sting got a credit for this. Although he really didn't want to, but his A&R company wanted to.  I still give it whole to MK.

Agree on MFN. The notes aren't even the same.

I agree too, but I think the notes are the same as the 1st phrase of the verse from Sting's song

e.g. "I want my MTV" is the exact same melody as "Young teacher, the subject, Of schoolgirl fantasy", and in the same key

I think I read somewhere that Mark composed Telegraph Road on the piano.

I read that too.  Must have been the Myles Palmer book.

Mark composing on piano? You guys are funny ;D

Paul Simon wrote 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' completely on guitar, and nobody give the credits to Larry Knechtel, the arranger.

Here's the guitar demo:

I read that too.

And during the OLT Mark played the organ intro on TOL.

yes and you can add this pic from the LOG piano score....but it doesn't prove that mark composed TR all alone

yes it always difficult to determine the frontier between composition and arrangement, but I'd say that on Simon's song there is less "creativity" on the piano part that there is on telegraph road
Although bridge over troubled water is a beautiful song, it is far less complex that TR which requires more "arrangement" (or more "composition" ?) so to say

There are no extended instrumental parts or solos on Bridge. And string arrangements may be a difficult thing for inexperienced or not properly educated  musicians, but for a pop-rock song some times it is considered such a simplistic thing that usually they don't even demand an arranger credit, if money is good. And many big studios used to have such arrangers as part of the household services. Of course other times the composer gets a composition credit on the song, because his ideas infiltrate the composition (like Ron Gessin on Atom heart mother etc. )  And I can only imagine what would Marvin Gaye's What's going on  would have sounded like without the input of all these great musicians and arrangers. The first test - singles have the original orchestration that although they are away from the traditional Motown sound, are still a long way to go from the masterpieces versions that finally appeared on the finished album .

And these appeared commercially!

He is.

Dear Doc, according to this, it looks like MK is working on a new score with Evelyn Glennie, is that true? Anything you can tell about it?

Yes, the three of us will be starting work on a score soon.

Not sure if I am happy about this. I liked his statement that he did not want to waste any time with scores anymore as it was more important to him to write songs..

The Tracker album is finished and the tour is announced. So he has to do something in between  ;)

I recall MK playing keyboards on Local Hero soundtrack as well (some synth stuff I thought)... So... It's not impossible!

I think it was at the time of the LoG album when he said the songs sound different because he composed more on the piano. I would however not see this as a proper 'change' from composing on the guitar to composing on the piano but rather that Mark probably tried different arrangements and ideas on the piano as well. The music was becoming more complex at that time and it is easier to try certain things on the piano. One of these might be different bass notes and such, I mean it was mainly the root note on the bass before, and with LoG the bass was often on the third or other intervals, e.g. on PI or LoG.

According to Jack Sonni, Mark had also big interest in the New York Jazz scene at that time, thus the more complexity on LOG compared to the more rock oriented MM album.

Dear friends, I have been reading all the messages and it is not all clear to me! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/Fieneke2/Emoticons/Shrug-s.gif) So let me ask a stupid question!

What does "score"  mean? There are some different meanings in my dictionary, but I don't know which the right one is!(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/Fieneke2/Emoticons/blush.gif)

Basically the incidental music for a film.  Like the Local Hero, Wag the Dog etc. stuff he's done in the past.  :)
