Title: Mark Knopfler's World War 1 guitar tribute
Post by: kaleo74 on October 28, 2014, 05:05:58 AM
Mark playing "THE LAST POST" tribute to the 17.000 soldiers who lost their lives in the first WW on his beautiful Blue Pensa Custom MKD at British Grove, what a sound !!! I think that Mark loves this beauty.

What a surprise to find this little but so moving clip this morning.

(And the fan(boy) in me of course notices cool shirt, cool shoes and that colour-coordinated bracelet)

Guy mentioned that this Pensa "makes an appearance or two" on the new album. Which would be the first time we could hear it on a studio recording.

I read about the "The Last Post" as I knew it from movie scenes I guess but I am not that familiar with it - Joseph Haydn is said to be involved in the composition of it.

Many thanks for the link, it was very moving!

The fangirl noticed all of those things too, LE!    ;)   Oh, and the way he positions his feet!   ;D

I notice that underneath the video, the place Mark grew up in has been copied from Wikipedia, which is wrong.  Mark didn't grow up in Blyth, but Gosforth!

Very nice, thanks for the link. Meanwhile the blue Pensa is also one of my favourite MK guitars (like the red strats, his famous blues gibson, the national and the Pensa Suhr)

Indeed a surprise.  A nice one, but a surprise nonetheless!

I wonder... what Mark was listening through headphones? If he had an amp beside and just 1 guitar, so what he could listen to? Click? Original tune? ???

I was wondering about the same!

Click track was the idea that came to my mind, too.

A fantastic cause and supporting something very worthwhile, a concept we have really come to expect from MK.  A real nod to the past, and a chance to pay respect to those who gave their lives for all of us, plus that personal connection - remember piper to the end?

But on a slightly different topic.....blue Pensa......drool...... :clap

Its a good sign that this awesome guitar will be making its debut on the new record, which will hopefully mean a few apperences during the 2015 tour.....

While he is playing, he is checking the tracker mixes. A multitasker  ;)

It's possible, but considering there are several mics in the room, couldn't he also be listening to the mix of those mics, so he gets the perspective of what we are hearing?
And yes, the blue Pensa is an absolute beauty!

Maybe there is a basic track and they will add the guitar part later, but for the fundraising purposes they have created this video.

He said recently in an interview or somwhere else that although he is the owner of the place, it has its own schedule and he can't just walk in and play at any moment.

Yes foma, I read that too. But I guess he meant that he might collide with other band's committents and has to take care of that. If studio 1 or 2 is reserved for other recording works, he has to respect that. But I really don't think he gets charged. His whole recording work has changed since he has that studio. Working and exploring the songs for months is not something he has done, right?

Maybe for financial reasons he keeps a separate account for his recordings. It is deductible. After all time is money...

Yes, i'm pretty sure that they combined this fast recording with some other studio work.
Why he plays with headphones i don't know. Click Track would only be necessary when they mix it with other instruments, this seems not to be the case. So i like the reason of Sultan of swing, to hear how it sounds on the recording.

He uses some effects like compression, delay and reverb which don't come out of the amp. The amp gets recorded and that signal gets some processing, that's is probably what's on his headphones.

Very moving video, thanks for this link, and indeed not surprising from MK!!! As my father did fight in 2 wars I'm really grateful that an Artist like him involves himself with his music in remembering those who were killed during World War I and II.
