Seen in GF forum : the delay of a new GF album seems to be caused by the soundtrack of a movie called Altamira.
Question :
Merry Christmas and best wishes for a happy, successful, rich New Year to you and your family, and TRACKER or MK, as well as MK Band! P. s. TRACKER - it is great, but may I ask, what is going on with Doc

wow, loved that. would have not sounded bad on wag the dog.
omg, let's hope this is new film music by mk...

There are some sites, including imdb that talks about the film and the cast, but nothing about the music score...

I think there are no MK involved due to complete absence of the melody in this particular trailer.
I think MK can't compose something like two chords changing each other for the OST.
But Guy is a good composer, too, I'm not trying to be rude to anyone here.
-
Dare we ask Guy if this is either his or MK's composition - or neither? :think

I dont think thats a trailer, and I dont think that song has nothing to do with it, looks like a fan made thing...
In imdb it says film its in post production so not official trailer yet.

Yes, I searched it, too. I think it's too early to ask Guy anything anyway.

No flutes, pipes, citterns and pacy too, so I would say this isn't by Mark.
Seriously though, I think Guy might not want to reveal the composer; if it wasn't Mark does that mean we are just going to dismiss it and if it is by Mark we are all going to buy the soundtrack...
-
Guy just answered. The music on that clip hasn't nothing to do with Altamira, as I guessed.
Still not any info about if it's his work, Mk work or whatever... Let's see if someone dares to ask LOL
-
It is a very beautiful instrumental, reminds me somehow of Metroland.
I wish you all a merry Christmas!
And I want to thank each and every one who posted on this forum for their contribution. It means so much to me.

I hope its finally a MK soundtrack, hopefully the one co-wrote with Evelyn Glennie, which is a superb percussionist? I was impressed by his "what musicians do all day" documentary, you value his playing even more when you discover she is deaf.
-
Never really been over-enthused by the thought of a new soundtrack to be perfectly honest; most of the tracks are incidental and only 2 or 3 are ever memorable. It also slows down his productivity for "proper" albums and touring.

I made a question to Guy on his forum about the "Altamira" soundtrack and he has revealed the following:
We are working on it right now. A mini diary would be pretty boring since it's just Mark and I, two computers, several monitors, lots of sample libraries and tea. I may post a page when we actually record with Evelyn Glennie as she is quite wonderful. I did take a series of pictures and video recently as I went to her studio to record some samples. Awe inspiring stuff. The film (directed by Hugh Hudson and starring Antonio Banderas and Rupert Everett) is beautiful btw.
-
So it's a MK soundtrack? :D

That reference about computers and music libraries makes me think about scores like Last Exit to Brooklynn, that disappointing because it was mainly keyboards playing strings and percussion...

First thing that popped into my mind too. In saying that I think it suited the film extremely well, perhaps best of all his soundtracks.
-
IMDB have this down for release on November 15th and MK as the composer of the main theme. It maybe that is it only one song from him and the rest Evelyn Glennie (who I'd never heard of before this).

Film sounds like a nonconformist shower unit. ;D

If you believe Guy and MK himself, the score is by MK, with help from Evelyn Glennie. Guy mentioned in his forum, mainly as answers to my questions, that he and MK were working on music libraries for the score, that Guy himself went to Glennie´s studio to record samples of percussion instruments before she went to BG, and I read in some MK interviews that he apologized with the interviewer about being late because the Altamira film director shot more parts for the film and some more music was needed...
And I also read that the director of Altamira is MK´s friend, so, I guess that the score is, at least by MK and Evelyn Glennie, according to everything I read. Maybe Guy can be asked about this by someone that is not me for a change ;D

Updates in IMBD about ALTAMIRA
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3014910/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3014910/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm)
Release date for the film 13rd November
Music by Evelyn Glennie
But if you dig in the full credits, down below you can read the following:
Music Department
Guy Fletcher ... music coordinator
Evelyn Glennie ... composer: theme music
Mark Knopfler ... composer: additional music / composer: theme music
So MK and Evelyn Glennie composed the main theme, and MK (or Guy following MK ideas...) the rest of the music?
-

In Spain, IT was delayed to April 2016, sadly.
-
Does anyone, maybe from Spain, have new info about the release date of the movie or the soundtrack?
All I found recently is this on the Morena Films Website from Dec 11th: http://morenafilms.com/en/mark-knopfler-has-composed-the-music-of-altamira/
"Mark Knopfler has composed the music of Altamira, one of the films in production of Morena Films, directed by Hugh Hudson, director of Chariots of Fire, starring Antonio Banderas. The project has allowed Knopfler to meet new parts of Spain, a country that he loves and visits often. “When I make music for films, I feel a bit like a fraud. You’re not dealing with songs, is to be in the land of music again”, he admits. The film will be released in spring 2016."

Guy answers "Yes" to the question about wether it will be released on a CD :)

A little update in IMDB, there is someone playing violin...
Music Department
Mark Berrow ... musician: violin
Guy Fletcher ... music coordinator
Evelyn Glennie ... composer: theme music
Isobel Griffiths ... orchestral contractor
Alastair King ... orchestrator
Mark Knopfler ... composer: additional music / composer: theme music
-
Today Guy confirmed that the music in the making of is their music, and that a CD release will accompany the film when it arrives to the cinemas in April.
-
The movie will be released in April 22, according to IMDB
-
Finally, the official trailer
http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/cultura-en-rtvees/rtvees-estrena-trailer-altamira-nueva-pelicula-antonio-banderas/3453801/ (http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/cultura-en-rtvees/rtvees-estrena-trailer-altamira-nueva-pelicula-antonio-banderas/3453801/)
There are a lot of music, I only saw it once but there is a piece with many acoustic guitar, and in the end a big and powerful theme played by what it looks like an orchestra, and Guy playing piano and synths, it looks that there is a choir as well. I guess that could be the main them with Evelyn Glennie.
The first instrumental with MK guitar sounds different to the little pieces we heard in the making off, so maybe we will get lucky and having many MK guitar parts in this score!
-
Thanks jbaent for keeping us updated on the Altamira project!

Well, this is a MK fans forum and we are fans of MK's music, Altamira is a soundtrack of MK's music so it's something important to follow, don´t you think? ;)
I don´t mind at all about the other topic that has been busy this days, that´s not MK. :lol

Although there are only a few seconds of MK's acoustic guitar in this new clip I'm grateful for being able to listen to anything new of MK.

It is no surprise that a whistle can be heard on the soundtrack. A very good example is the beautiful 'Tierra' CD with Vicente Amigo. ;)

If she is "only" a percussionist why is she given equal billing on the album? Did she write some songs too? Do we know how many? There is so much we don't seem to know about this album, or so much I don't know anyway! :hmm

She composed all the percussion part of the soundtrack, which is very important according to Guy and Morena Films, one of the film producers.

Thanks. That's a bit clearer in my mind now. So I guess they worked on those songs that have percussion together then and those having no percussion will be Mark solo.

Also up on Spotify, first track sounds great indead

1,2,8 and 10 are the best tracks i think.

One is very stunning, eight playing now is very nice too. I don't really get why they put Dream Of The Bison on the album, might work in the film but is to much 'noise' to listen to. Track 7 (the other bison one) is better digestible, can relate that to the mood music on the Cal soundtrack. Overall, it's very nice. They kept it really simple, mainly guitar with some strings and a flute here and there which actually works quite well. The percussion by Evelyn really gives it a mystical atmosphere, very nice. Track 9 is playing now, the ending with flute and string reminds me of the Braveheart soundtrack a bit (A Gift of A Thistle, the piece is called I believe). Up to the great finale with Farewell to Altamira and off to bed!
-
Will be downloading just as I get home from work in the morning.....

The two "Bison" songs are on the album because it´s where Evelyn Glennie did his best, if you see the video "Inside Altamira" where you can see MK and Evelyn working on the music, they are talking about that and how Evelyn worked hard to get from his percussion the sounds for the bisons...

Thanks for the pictures, Knopflerfan and the video Jbaent! :) Nice to see Kitty giving MK her support. :)

You can hear the guitar riff from LAJADAS in "Maria". Listen carefully :)

And the three first notes of "Altamira" are the same than in "Sons Of Scorland"
I guess there are some licks, notes, chords that always comes to his mind when working.

Oh really, I hear it too now! Probably yes, or maybe he's just lazy :D :D ;D

Will be downloading just as I get home from work in the morning.....
Here are some 'official' photo's from last nights Premiere...
Nice to see some familiar faces from Spanish films, like Tristan Ulloa, Antonio Banderas and Javivi.

I have to say that I was a bit worried at the start when Guy said that they were working (MK and him) with computers and sample libraries, I was expecting some synth score like "Last Exit..." but in the end it's full of lovely guitar, and with a real orchestra, also celtic flutes... maybe it would be too much to say it's my favourite score right now, but together with Local Hero, Cal and A Shot At Glory, one of my favourites!
-
I like it very much. Lots of beautiful guitar and the main theme is gorgeous. :)
-
Though I love the main theme, I miss the epic finale of The Long Road, Going Home or Metroland a bit. But that might not have fitted in with the movie :think
-
Altamira sounds nice with some cool guitar licks.
But compared to the other soundtracks by MK, it really sounds as a soundtrack (like The Princess Bride or Last Exit To Brooklyn) with a lot of synth, low violin (Bison tracks, onward, glory of the cave, farewell altamira....). It certainly suits to the film but it's not a disc I will listen a lot.
Very far from my favorite MK soundtrack Wag The Dog.

Yes, I agree. I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't a final flourish as in other soundtracks.

Sorry, guys, I'm a completely idiot when it comes to Spotify (and other stuff, too...). But how can I download the songs from Spotify to my pc?

A great video of the photocall yesterday night at Madrid, with Mark Knopfler, recorded by a friend of mine, professional of video recording, specially with dron.

Amazing video! Very nice to see that Mark signs a lot and even allows selfies with the fans! When in 'tour mode' he don't want any pics with fans and now he is posing with them. :D

Nice video, he seems to be very relaxed. There is always a certain pressure when touring, clearly he doesn't have it now so he's more open to such things I think.

Great soundtrack. The main theme is beautiful

Mike McGoldrick plays flute and whistles in this soundtrack. Great! confirmed by Guy.

My sentiments exactly. It appears to me to be a better score than album, rather in the vein of Last Exit (which is probably his best score in a cinematic sense IMHO). It's really just incidental music for the film. I suppose that's what soundtracks are, but this really sounds like it!
Also as has been said, it needs a finale: a Going Home, a Metroland, a Long Road...
-
Indeed not a standout moment. Not weak, but not fabulous.

It's like 10 very hi-def ringtones for mobile phones :think.

Very pleased with the album, and great to hear 'the Master' playing solely Acoustic guitar for a change... Although I played a few of the tunes on the MK Strat tonight and they work??!! :wave

The song "Maria" reminded me very much over this tune:

Only listened once to the album but sounds like a blend between Princess Bride and A Shot At Glory.

Still wondering why no one made an April Fool's joke that it was an EDM album for some part with MK playing licks over the beats :hmm

I would've sued you for that joke, how dare you say such terrible things! That's not funny anymore! ;D

There was a joke in Facebook about MK producing next Celine Dion record, in a site that cloned the official MK site so it looked real ;D
In some hours I'm going to watch the movie.

So, how did you like the movie?
And how did Mark's score fit the movie?
-
The movie is good, the actress that plays the wife's role is hard to believe as she doesn't look as a.Spanish at all, but the movie is well made, the landscapes are astonishing and Mark's music fits very well, the two first tracks sound quite a lot along the film, and it works very well.
I hope that if it reaches your cinemas you like it too.

What about the plot itself? Too mawkish or tolerable?
-
Its tells the real story of how the cave was discover and what happened to the man and his daughter about the discovery. It's a historic film. I found the story interesting and sad at the same time, as Spanish, I always knew about the caves but knew nothing about its discovery.

I found the story interesting...
It's the main thing, thanks.

What a fantastic soundtrack this is! Beautifull melodies and arrangements, sounds very authentic. Love the orchestral parts played by real intruments for a change and the sound of the marimbas played by Evelyn Glennie really add something. But it seems a little odd that she is billed equal to Mark as composer, did she really co-wtite the main theme melodies? The sound and melodie of that horn in a few places is fantastic too as are the human voices in 'Onward'. And what to say about the beautifull cello, hope Mark will feature this intrument in his regular songs as well in the future. Of course those bison sounds I could live without but I'm sure will suit those scenes in the movie very well. Great little peace of work!

I love this beautiful soundtrack too. It's a little gem. Although I respect Evelyn Glennie as a percussionist and I realise that the Bison tracks are an important part of the film, for me the soundtrack, as a listener, flows much better without those tracks, so I have made an edited version omitting the Bison tracks. Now I can listen to either version according to how I feel! :)
-
I'm not sure that I will listen to these tunes every blessed day, but would like to mention that I was indeed enchanted by the sounding of a cello.
-
Who doesn't love a cello now and then? The musical world has so much to offer, think of classical music, jazz, blues etc.
-
The Cello is played by the wonderful Caroline Dale, who has also played live with David Gilmour, playing Comfortably Numb among other songs :o
