Beryl (Mark Knopfler)

LYRICS
   Beryl was on another level
When she got a Booker medal
She was dead in her grave
After all she gave
After all she gave

Beryl, every time they’d overlook her
When they gave her a Booker
She was dead in her grave
After all she gave
After all she gave

It’s all too late now
It’s all too late now
It’s too late, you dabblers
It’s all too late
It’s too late, you dabblers
It’s all too late

Beryl, the tobacco overtook her
When they gave her a Booker
She was dead in her grave
After all she gave
After all she gave

It’s all too late now
It’s all too late now
It’s too late, you dabblers
It’s all too late
It’s too late, you dabblers
It’s all too late

Beryl was on another level
When she got a Booker medal
She was dead in her grave
After all she gave
After all she gave
After all she gave
After all she gave

3 mins and 11 secs is kinda short. Do you guys and gals think it is so short cause it's a single and that the album version will be longer?

Iron Hand is 1 second shorter.  :D

Great News - can't wait to hear it!    :D

It could be about Beryl Bryden, as has already been said, but Mark has always enjoyed poking fun at names like Beryl, Mavis and Gladys in a jokey sort of way as he did about the lady on the BBC Radio 1 committee (some Beryl, Mavis or Gladys), so perhaps it's a fun kind of song.   :think
Title: Re: Lead single from Tracker: "Beryl"!!
Post by: Jarle on January 10, 2015, 10:09:19 AM
Exciting news indeed :)

I agree that the name of the song might reference to Beryl Bryden. In 1997, Mark wrote a foreword together with George Harrison to a book called Skiffle. Skiffle is, according to Wikipedia, a type of popular music with jazz, blues, folk, and roots influences, usually using homemade or improvised instruments. Originating as a term in the United States in the first half of the twentieth century, it became popular again in the UK in the 1950s, where it was mainly associated with musician Lonnie Donegan and played a major part in beginning the careers of later eminent jazz, pop, blues, folk and rock musicians.

This book talks apparantly about Beryl Bryden and Lonni Donegan, amongst others, and it seems that Beryl was a "master" with the washboard :) There did at some point exist a group called The Lonnie Donegan Skiffle Group, where Lonnie had guitar and vocals, Chris Barber played double bass, and Beryl Bryden played the washboard. In the video below, form the TV documentary Lonnie Donegan - This Is Your Life from 1991, you can see the group reunite and play a song from about 8:00 and out :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=9vFx-61PeR8

So, I suppose Beryl Bryden is the one "Beryl". Or maybe not? Who knows :) I wonder if it's a skiffle song, anyway :P

Maaaaaaaaaybeeeeee they want to update whole website with a new design and with a track to listen to?

Sounds plausibel to me, I'm wondering when they will do that. Should be logical to do it long before the release date I think, for promotion of the album to increase sales whatsoever(?)

Yes, it may be right or not, but this kind of character "Now I might have had a bit of natural talent but I got here because of pure determination and persistence. Stubbornness you might say. I always went that extra mile, pushed myself that bit harder than anyone else and never took anything for granted." is very much in Mark's chords!

No wonder that they have to move it - when the planned date is Jan. 14th and Guy states that he is doing a radio edit on the 12th.. looks not very professional .. but who am I... Here is hope however that the 3.11 min. are already the edited version? I can't imagine making a 3.11 min. track even shorter for radio release?  :hmm

And to clarify the thread subject a bit, it will probably not be a proper "single" but only a radio promotion, edited, like in the past with Redbud Tree or Border Reiver, no physical release of any kind or form, right?

It's a total mystery to me, why they moved the release date of the single again. There was enough time to plan it properly. Ok, on the other hand there has never been an official announcement of the release date, but still the sites have got the informations. Would be interesting what the problem is...

Heavier drums would probably make it too much DS-like as it's already a typical DS song (uptempo, strat, sultans count-in).

My guess is Beryl Bainbridge.
Lyrics mention "booker medal when she's dead in her grave".  Not many lyrics to this song....not sure what to make of it. Same lyrics repeated a lot. "After all she gave" and "it's all too late now" etc etc. to be honest if it wasn't for the little guitar break I would have sworn that the same 30 seconds are being played on a loop for 3 minutes.

It's only me or this song is really very JJ Caleish? I know it sounds trivially, but especially with these backing vocals I hear Cale al the time.

Need to hear the full version of this song because this edit is VERY repetitive :hmm. And to be blunt not that good a song on hearing this version. Kinda takes me back to when I first heard TLWNF.......underwhelmed.

Ps. Seems to be an MK protest song about Beryl Bainbridge not getting a booker prize for literature whilst she was alive.... Or maybe I'm way off the mark.

Yeah, it's cale-stylish, like also the little bit of Hank Marvin style playing at about 1:53, only one or two notes.
And i correct anything what i've said about the rhythm. My comp wasn't connected with the boxes and theefore the bass was missing. But now it's something different. It's really astonishing how important bass is  ;D
@goldenheart: you need a bass box, so the organ isn't dominant anymore.

A one-off prize... Hmm. Frustrating indeed... Just read her wikipedia entry. She mainly wrote History novels which explains MK's interest.

What I really like about the production is the contrast between the wet guitar (lots of delay/reverb for MK fingerpicking style) and the dry drums/bass/acoustic guitar. Can't wait to listen to this record on full quality, the drums sound incredible detailed. The organ reminds me of Punish The Monkey.

Cool playing and lots of licks and electric lovliness....

Lyrically?  Erm....yeah - the song is all a bit "Meh" for me....uninspiring and quite frankly dull.....a bit "Dont you get it".....

One of the things I love about MK's tunes is the ability to sing along in the car or on headphones.....but there is NO way im singing a song which mentions Beryl......!! ;D

Beryl Bainbridge

Beryl Bainbridge was born in Lancashire in November 1934. She wrote her first novel, Harriet Said, during the 1950s, although it was not published until 1972.

She has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize five times; The Dressmaker (1973); The Bottle Factory Outing (1974), which won the Guardian Fiction Prize; An Awfully Big Adventure (1990) which was made into a film in 1995; Every Man For Himself (1996) which won the Whitbread Novel Award; and Master Georgie (1998) which won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize (for fiction).

Beryl Bainbridge was awarded a DBE in 2000, and later died in London in 2010. A one-off award, the Man Booker Best of Beryl, was created in her honour to celebrate her five shortlisted novels.

Back to the old days with the sound of the Strat, looks like a tribute song to JJ Cale, and the organ reminds me the one on "Let's see you", anyway great song and can't wait to listen to the whole album.

To me, the sound of the strat on Beryl is very similar to Bo Walton's song: miss you bad. Knopfler plays the guitar there and the sound and even the rhythm are very similar, imo

Seems that it's offline on Spotify. At 06.00 AM this morning I was able to listen to it, now at work, it seems offline.  My first impression of the song:  A bit of JJ Cale, a bit of the first Straits-album...  in a way 'typical MK'.  This kind of fresh Strat-sound combined with an uptempo beat, it was a long time ago he did something like that!

Oh, DogSwede put it on YouTube I see.. Well, this time, I have to say thank you very much - and it is extremely sounding like JJ and has some Punish The Monkey touch - and yes, the double vocals (which is very much JJ style) fits well to MK..
And I like the beginning and the ending very much!

The lyrics are indeed somewhat weak. I mean, not sure if Beryl cared for the Booker, or does a real writer really care for any prices? Is Philip Roth really sad that he hasn't got the Nobel Prize? So the big drama is that she was nominated 5 times and never got him? And that's enough for getting a song written by Mark.. maybe I have a chance, too - because my bike has a flat tyre the third time this month....  ;D ;D

The solo melody has something from Behind With The Rent, or what do you think?

Yes!   Beryl Bainbridge was one of my predictions!   When do I get my prize?  ;D

I liked it very much, especially the beautiful strat sound and the fast tempo, but the down side for me was the rather repetitive lyric.   It reminded me, in parts, of Behind With The Rent.

I wonder if MK was thinking about the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and his own omission, when he wrote the song?   :think

Song reminds me of:

- Early Bird (the singing part
- behind with the rent (intro)
- miss you bad (bo walton song)
- we can get wild (organ)

But it's a nice one! Hopefully the album version will be longer then. This one is very very short.

...It reminds me Chris Rea & JJ Cale.

I agree with.

About the text.

A premise: that Mark know how to write, I think, is out of the question.

The lyrics of the song, however, appears very thin and repetitive. I see two possible interpretations.

Mark has decided to write a "Radio" song (you know that the simpler songs are successful on the radio); however, given the argument, it seems unlikely.

The other possibility is that the song is deliberately dry and repetitive to give greater effect to his disagreement with what Mark sees as an injustice (or better a stupid behavior). A sort of invective.  The posthumous awards have always taste of repair, of missed opportunity.

I prefer  ;D to favor this second interpretation

I have only listened to the song twice and already it is resonating in my head, which for me is usually not a good thing!   I prefer songs to grow on me, especially in the case of MK's songs - those are the ones which become long-time favourites.   I feel it will be a skipper for me when the album is released.   Nice enough song, though!

This is my take on the meaning of the song: I don't think the message is that Mark is in some way vicious about the fact Beryl didn't get the booker price. Like some people write on this forum and on MK related facebook pages. You gotta see the bigger picture. In my opnion the message Mark is trying to get across is that people often get appraisel after their death and not during their lifetime. And Beryl is his metaphor for that message.

Certainly not a skipper. I am so in love with the strat sound. Amp could be the tone king. Quite sure actually. Listening to it know for a while, if we get an album full of tunes like this (prominent guitar, upbeat songs) I would be delighted. From a marketing point of view it's a good choice, this will be played on the radio. I'd rather hear Beryl than Redbud Tree if I was a regular radio listener and not a get-a-lifer if you know what I mean.

The sound reminded me something since I listened to Beryl.
And now I know what it reminds me : King's Call by Phil Lynott and No Money At All by Brendan Croker
Don't you think ?

I think there is some similarities with King's Call, but more like structure-wise and playing with major/minor.
The whole world listened to Beryl already, but still

I like the song. Maybe lyrics are too repetitive but i'm not looking for another it never rains or telegraph road. He is not capable of doing this kinda masterpieces anymore but that strat tone and Ian's tasteful drumming got me the first listen. When the man has a stratocaster with uptempo song, the rest is not important for me. Thanks to everyone in this forum who share this wonderful news with the MK world :wave

They never learn do they.  ;D

When Redbud Tree was about to be released some obscure Slovenian (?) online radio station played it first of all and had people sitting and waiting throughout a day to have it played again and then being taped.

If I recall correctly, even Metroland was first broadcasted and duly taped from a radio station back in -97. Then put on a delightful hissy and lossy 128 khz mp3 file (or something like that) for the community to enjoy :-)

MK fans are always on high alert!  :thumbsup

They don't understand how to promote the music in the new Internet world. The main purpose of a single release is for promotion, so, why block people from listening it?
The guys uploading it to the social networks actually are doing a favor to the promotion. Even the leakage by mistake can boost the social presence, as it has been proven repeatedly.

I miss Guy's keyboard parts like on 'A Place': almost invisible, but one of the main part of the song.
In Beryl its the other way round, the most visible part is the organ which you easily can get rid of.

It's definitely been cut. There is should be long solo, not this short one.

MK needs a new keyboard player..  ::)  ;D

It is really that Punish The Monkey sound -exactly the same... what is it - Wurlitzer, Fender Rhodes, I always mix up these things.. that instrument seems to be limited in its sound variation? Bob Dylan has it often used on Time Out Of Mind, and on that I loved it, but this is somehow not perfectly well fitting...

I like the line Beryl, the tobacco overtook her when they gave her her Booker she was dead in her grave
to (mis-)quote Mr. Bob again.. I like the way overtook her  is rhyming with Booker... and I like Mark's voice on this energetic song! Well done, Mr. Mark!

"Beryl, was on another level
When she got her Booker medal..."

Abysmal lyrically when you see it written down TBH.  He couldn't have been "tripping over songs" for this one!  Still, more importantly the guitar is nice, the melody okay and arrangement too.  The organ is great, I think and integral to the overall arrangement.  Try to imagine the song without the organ. Uptempo is good.

A bit of a 60s vibe in there especially the keys and Everly Brothers too with the band harmonising on vocals.  Tribute?

Agree with Val (yes, I do) when she says usually good songs of Mark's grow on me so I'll probably hate this next week!  :smack

The song is OK. MK doesn't seem to evolve musically the way other artists do though. All of his solo albums seem like one huge album split into individual albums. There's always this feeling when listening to a new MK song that you've heard it before.

Being no Musician at all and only listening to music, I would like to ask you, foma (and every other forumer with musical skills as well of course) what do you think of it, now that you analyzed it? It sounds light and easy, simple, is it musically spoken somehow a challenge to a guitarist? Are there some small little things that show how much genious MK is, or is this a song that every drunken busker could have written?  :wave

Pensaboy, it depends on your point of view. Lyrically speaking they are not simple at all, I'm not talking about Beryl right now indeed.
Music-wise, simplicity is the key to all great songs. I mean jazz standards is good examples of timeless and powerful yet simple songs.
With music often all the difficulty comes only with the structure of it. Take 'Telegraph Road'. It's extremely big, but well structured.

That's why I call it simple

Listened to the song once this afternoon and think it's a killer track! Very good guitar part and sound plus a very catchy melody, therefore an ideal single to promote the album. Also love the energetic vibe and fast pace!
@Stefan: zou je me het nummer misschien willen mailen? Zou graag nog meer luisteren naar Beryl maar het is niet meer online.

Yes, Beryl is quite cool but nothing new as already posted.
I also like the Strat Sound and the Drums as well. A bit more speed is good on that one.
Redbud tree had not the shape of a first single.
It is time on Mark's records that the drums get a more important role and fuller sound.
The last records were all dull drum-sound-wise.
The last good one was Shangri-La.
Hope the rest of the record is even better.
As LE already stated: The days of real Excitement are over beacuse of it happens nothing really new.
The style is quite the same for years now. O.K. Privateering hd more bluesy tunes but until now
I did not unpack the Privateering Original Deluxe CD Box... Ooooops
That never happened before.
Times since GH and STP changed...sadly
Anyway. Looking forward to the album and of course the TOUR.
WE LOVE YOU MARK!!! :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

Yeah my first thought also was sounds a bit like Sultans. Because of the strong STRAT Sound and the drums. I don't know.

The single "Beryl" will be released in the UK tomorrow 16th Jan.

The song is about a famous English novelist Beryl Bainbridge from Liverpool - who died in July 2010.  Wrote some brilliant novels and was awarded a posthumous Booker Prize for her efforts.

The track was available briefly on YouTube yesterday morning, along with a video depicting Beryl Bainbridge - they were quickly removed by YouTube.

The song is just over 3 mins long and is a song that will grow on you.  In my opinion in needed to be a little longer with more substance.  However, it is class, but don't expect the world.

Personally?  I love it.

The album is scheduled for release on March 10th in the USA - not sure about the UK release date yet.

Listened two "Beryl" all night yesterday, and love it. Yes, the lyrics are simple, but I don't mind. Little ditties like this have their place in his body of work, I think, just as something like "So Far from the Clyde" does, with it's many verses. For me, "Beryl" doesn't quite have the emotional depth of "Redbud Tree" or "True Love Will Never Fade", but I think the lighthearted tune is an interesting contrast to the sad story it tells. I don't think I can remember another Knopfler track that works like that.

The keyboards are obviously borrowed from "Who's Your Baby Now", and one guitar lick from "True Love", but that's fine. Better to steal from yourself than from others (like a certain Mr. Zimmerman ;)). And although some of you have complained about it, I actually like the way Ianto ends the song. Sounds like hammering the nails into Beryl's coffin.

Conclusion: "Beryl" is just fine and perfect to please Dire Straits nostalgics on the radio, but I'm sure there are greater things to come with that album. I'm getting really excited about it.

Rail King, you nailed it perfectly. Couldn't say it any better (no wonder) - the part with the lightness of the song most of all: Mark the man who wrote many songs with (too) many words  - Sonny Liston, Sultans(!), Telegraph Road, 5.15 am,  and so on, must be allowed to try the simple form as well. I must admit I also listened to it last night a LOT.. 20 times or so at least - but the beginning has such magic, you must repeat - also the keypbard is annoying more and more, because it is so ... uninspired.. It is exactly the same notes as on Punish The Monkey and I believe on Do America (could be wrong). so it is indeed
Guy once again who nearly spoils a song with his keyboard addition.

The lyrics are simple, yes, but some of the lines are really gripping. And the melody MK sings is very nice, too.

Rail King, the coffin/nail thing is pretty amazing, as Punish The Monkey has also the coffin/nail picture in it.

Yes, about Beryl Booker - I found her, too, on Wikipedia last night. And it is somehow strange/funny that her family name is BOOKER, but I think the tobacco line in the lyrics make it pretty clear that Mark means Beryl Bainbridge with this song... but maybe, who knows, both names might have resonated in Mark's mind..

(I also often like to think that he heard the name "Redbud Tree" maybe in a conversation with Bob or during an American tour leg or maybe saw one and was told these trees are called Redbud Trees, and automatically the pure sounding of the word made him think Redbud Tree, shelter me, shelter me, and off his songwriting sould went and the rest was simple... same with Dog eat Dog, rat eat rat, when it comes to EATING at McDonalds and the line in Ray Krocs book.. so this might be the initial word for it, as Booker and Booker price might be for Beryl - and he is married to a writer and loves literature.. but I am going off topic too much.. )

So, Beryl, the first Non-Smoker-Song about a writer in Mark's universe, after Harry in In The Gallery and the Artist in Let It All Go... now we have Beryl!

You can never read enough books, can't you, and I love literature and books for all my life, I read and have read a lot, and I work in a book store for more than 15 years now, but I never came across Beryl Bainbridge (in Gemany). So I like to ask the Brits maybe if she is really that famous for not being famous..

The first association I had with (edit: the name)  Bainbridge was from the movie "12 Angry Men" when "The Amazing Mrs. Bainbridge" was the name of a movie and one juror used it to give an example for how good his memory is...

There are some books of here available in German translation, but as I said, never read her, never heard of her, never noticed her.

Yes, I have known about her for years, mainly because she was from Liverpool and so am I, but I am ashamed to say that I have never read one of her books, even though I am an avid book reader.  Maybe I should start reading her books now - another thing MK has introduced me to!

Just had to give it another listen (I'll have to stop soon so I don't ruin the first album listening session). And since I don't know a thing about recording technology, I wondered if anybody had anything to say about how his voice was recorded here. To me, it almost sounds as if it had been recorded all at once, together with the instruments, in one room. Like Gator Blood, kind of. Except for the lead guitar, which is somehow up there in the sky, or "on another level", if you will. Beryl up there, angelic, and the rest of us down here, mourning and regretting ...

This is going to be one of those songs that you cant get out of your head. Its a lovely song, simple but refreshing. Its very clever, very Mark and also very Kill To Get Crimson as well as MKs vocals being very heavily processed which also makes him sound a semi-tone (or more) higher than of late. Not sure he could replicate that on stage without 'assistance'. Lots of similar riffs from the past in it but no complaints other than the processing element :).

I like the song too.  It reminds me somewhat of the older DS stuff, with the constant Strat/vocal interplay.  Not the retro keyboard sound though.

The hook sounds a lot like something from Wag the Dog, I just can't quite put my finger on it...

I hate the Marketing strategy of record companies! Why o why couldn't they have released tracks 16 en 17 on the deluxe CD version?  ???  :disbelief

Wy not a Super deluxe 3 CD box version with all the tracks and the interview CD? Now people have to pay for vinyl, for which they might not even have a turntable. Neither do some care about the visual Arts/Prints.

I like the song a lot. The rhythm does sound a little like a reconstruction of sultans though, but I am not complaining.  The song wouldn't have sounded out of place on a Dire Straits album.

On spotify they changed Mks pic to one of him in the Love Over Gold era. Interesting from a marketing perspective.

I agree that on reflection it is very weak overall with the lyrics and basic idea behind it being shallow in the extreme.  In fact, the lyrics sound like part of a nursery rhyme.  If he thinks his songs become signposts in peoples lives he'd better think again - this one is more like a traffic cone.

I do however like that it has some pace (for a change) and I quite like the melody.

I think it's a very good choice for radio-play, though.   Something upbeat and catchy is what is needed and Beryl ticks all the boxes, so will probably attract a lot of interest from listeners, which will be good for the album.    :)

Without subwoofer the organ sounds annoying to me, too, but when you play it through a sub or listen to it with good headphones, its pretty ok, because the bass pushes it more to background. I think the sound is important to create the '79 feeling, when the vox continental was often used. That works. I don't like the organ sound when the same chord is played constantly (e.g. 1:16 - 1:19) but i like it when it leads to other harmonies (1:34 - 1:37).

The album has still to come out and it's an OK single to start with but I am hoping for(and sure there will be) a lot better on the album, because this guy is hugely talented and can do so much better.

We're lucky he is still recording and touring as much as he does.

I totally agreed with you rosco.  I listened to it now about 4 - 5 times.  It didn't quite grab me. I feel it lacks a usual degree of depth musically and lyrically. I also hope there will be better songs with long killer guitar solos or even some bluesy sounds to other songs in the album :)

I have the same feeling. As if this song is a kind of musical retrospective of DS/MK works from beginning till solo albums. May be it's the idea behind it?  :think

It is now truly obvious to me the message that Mark is sending via Beryl.... He is basically saying that Dire Straits/MK won't be getting the "Booker" ie: Rock 'n Roll HOF induction until its "all to late". I don't know who I will be able to survive without Mark being around, but he's saying, "yeah, after I am dead and buried they'll honor us/me".
The fact that there is so much old DS influences in this track I think is Mark sticking it to them! He is being sarcastic and funny at the same time! I love it!

I'd be willing to bet any money that DS have already been asked but MK won't do it because it would mean sharing a stage with David.

I'm quite new on this forum and I really don't know much about the relationship between Mark and David nowadays!! I suppose that you've discussed this matter before!!

Buy a good camera, learn it properly, buy a good mic, record it properly.

Agree with you, Fletch, from positive prospective, in other hand it's great idea to actually practice without blinking red dot.
I'd rather see this kid after 5 years doing this song without original playing and with good technique and stuff, this is my point.

In case of Sultans 'to kill' means 'to save'. It was right moment to stop playing it, and I think it will be heard, but rarely (at dustyvalentino parties).

There are certainly piano in the intro. And it resonates so well just because of absence of third in the last chord, if it means something to you anyway.

There are no third in penultimate chord either, hence the overall tension and power of the ending.
That's exactly why power chords (which is chords without third) was named 'power chords'.

Yes, it's a kind of magic, but I bet it was done by accident, more like an automatic motion.

Haha! No, seriously, I can go on and on forever just discussing these two chords. From the musical point of view I can explain almost everything and say exactly why this note or chord was chosen, and that's the reason for the fast transcribing process. I love when music is not subjective, but objective thing. Mark's music (and especially riffs) often contain certain parts that give the overall sound of the song, and together with complex right hand playing this is that people would call his 'style'.

Although this all been said, the very last chord of the song, in the very ending HAVE third in it, it was played by Guy on his organ.

This is almost baroque-style ending, see 'And I Love Her' for example. So these little things like this just blows my mind.

When Sultans was played stripped-down again in 2001, I was pretty sure from the beginning that the reason was What It Is with its similar structure, with a first solo and a slow quiet part followed by a build-up end solo etc.

Mind you; Sultans original studio-intro differs from the live-intro similar to Beryl. So there are ways to do this differently obviously. I do not believe that the short count-in itself is enough to "kill" SOS from a set-list.

I thought is was at the end of 2013 when it started and somewhere near the end of 2014 when it was finished, but it would be nice to be more accurate.

My guess is that Mark has (almost) stopped playing Sultans because "the twiddly bits" just got too difficult. He simply can't play it like he used to could, and thus decided to better not play it at all. Which is all fine as far as I'm concerned. Fingers do get rusty with age, there's no point in pretending that they don't, but luckily he has A TON of great songs that don't require guitar wizardry. Tracker will have more of those, and I'll be too busy hearing and admiring them to even miss Sultans for a second.

There are a lot of much older players out there who can still play faster stuff than that so I don't think there's an excuse.  Personally I just think he's lazy and doesn't practice much any more.

True Love Will Never Fade is the best example.
Singles are the songs that fit better for radio play... never the best of the albums.
But, Redbud Tree was not a single but just a "focus song" as they said.

It's not just the "count in" that is Sultan-ish, also there is the grove, tempo, rhythm, few drum fills and guitar licks etc...but to "kill"? I don't think so...would it be a nice replacement in the setlist perhaps? Maybe...

Non the less, I'd always take songs like Beryl prior previous two early released ones like Get Lucky and Redbud Tree, so I got the very good feel about the Tracker, can't wait   :D

But I'm also not so sure that technical difficulties of the "the twiddly bits" or guitar skill in general, played the part in dropping out SOS on Privateering tour. There are many much more difficult to play guitar licks on other songs which Mark still plays very well. I found the last Telegraph solo much harder than "the twiddly bits" per example. After all, "the twiddly bits" are not so hard to play at all. As a player I can assure on that. Plus, I'm yet to hear a live record of SOS from 2013 tour where are any troubles with "the twiddly bits" can be heard...but my "theory" on that topic goes forward that something else in the band not as quite as it should. Comparing to GL tour records of SOS perhaps...those from 2013 are quite less energetic. If I must do the ugly job of pointing fingers, I'd address it to the drums...

I have a fear that Beryl will be played as an alibi, an excuse, for not to playing SOS on the coming tour.

God I hope I am wrong.

Sounds most likely to me. But I'm not sure that would be a bad thing.  ::)

I'm looking forward to hearing it, even if it's instead of SOS.   MK was getting tired of Sultans, so wasn't playing it as it used to be played.  This will be something he's more interested in at the moment and, hopefully, he will have his heart in it more than SOS.   ;)

So there are actually those who would give up SOS to hear Beryl instead. Fascinating  :)

I would be very happy to hear Sultans again, but only if MK was happy playing it again.  Maybe he could alternate it with Beryl some nights, then he would please more people.   :)

Well, you have to agree that if there are three strikes on the hi hat - right after R&J - most people will inhale for a second and lightly squeeze their buttocks in anticipation to cheer, jump up and/or down or whatever.... and then Beryl comes on...

that said dribble will cause a lot of emotions and make people angry and upset.

What about Beryl with the Sultans solo tacked onto the end?  ;)

Seriously though, he couldn't really get away with playing both since they sound so similar.  Don't you think?

Having heard the 'Live' version which was played in Germany and although it was not great for MK's usual high standards I'm sure he will 'let rip' with some kind of lead solo, there is certainly room for one...

I think as any other song, it will evolve on tour. Improved solos included... I see one of two options, opening with this song, then rolling into What It Is, or, it replaces Sultans...

I think that Beryl will replace What it is, played in all tours, in a similar set I hope:

Laughs
Beryl (sure (hope) will have a long outro solo)
Sailing
Hill
Broken or basil
Romeo
Sultans

Maybe a medley? (although it is in Gminor)

" and Harry doesn't mind if Beryl gets a booker medal..."

I'm very happy that Mark still release few songs with huge Dire Straits influence.
I love all the other songs too.....but maybe a few more speedy songs like Beryl if you ask me.
It was a little hard for me to love the KTGC record back then.
But when I heard Punish The Monkey...... yeeeeees..... ;D

I'm pretty sure that Beryl will be played live at the tour. ;)

It has already evolved a little :-) This version has a bit more enthusiasm in Mark's fingers.

LOL! Just realised that a song by our Russian singer Zemfira have a very similar intro with ‘Beryl’:

Of course she's song was released many years before Mark's one, but still, very cool that song can have similarities but can be very different.

And it's in the same key, too!

Has anyone on here got the audio from the Live performance of 'Beryl' for a French evening TV programme (Le grand Journal??) as this was awesome and not a playback version. I cannot find it anywhere..... ???

With grateful thanks to the one and only dmg for coming to the rescue..... :wave
