Basil (Mark Knopfler)

LYRICS
My Saturday job pays six and six down
A copy boy at the Chronicle
Five cigarettes and two silver half crowns
Meeting Vince at Mark Toney’s in town
Boy, do we get around

Basil sits there on the table for subs
But not a part of the Bri-nylon club
Ancient blue sweater, too old for the job
Bored out of his mind
With the Colins and Bobs

I’m a jack and a lad
And I’m up for the world
And I’ve kissed a Gateshead girl

He calls for a copy boy, grumpy as hell
Poets have to eat as well
What he wouldn’t give just to walk out today
To have time to think about time
And young love thrown away

I’m a jack and a lad
And I’m up for the world
And I’ve kissed a Gateshead girl

Starlings swarming
A cloud over Grainger Street
Over the black church
Over the Black Gate
And the shadowy Keep

He peers through his wire rims
At the fish and chip words
He’s supposed to dish up and forget
His drudgery now has become slightly blurred
By one of his Players untipped cigarettes

Bury all joy
Put the poems in sacks
And bury me here with the hacks

In the summer the fair
Will stretch over the Moor
Lovers will lie and make out in the park
Basil puts on his old duffel and scarf
And goes out into the dark

Thank you, Geordie_60!     I do wish, though that newspapers, magazines, etc would get it right about where MK went to school, especially a Newcastle newspaper!    He lived in Gosforth and went to school there, not Blyth as is so often stated (copied from wrong info on Wikipedia)!   This was from the first blue link!

His mother came from Blyth i think and his parents were married there, but you're right he lived in Gosforth and went to school there. We at the Chronicle have plenty of archive pics of MK in his old classroom at his school in Gosforth.

LE, what about "I've kissed the gate's head now", what ever that could mean. I don't hear "girl". "Head" has so much meanings, for instance: headline, that fits to the newspaper business. Maybe I'm completely wrong. Just an idea.

Haven't really gave it a 2nd listen but I think some of our foreign friends may find it helpful to know that Gateshead is a town nearby Newcastle.

Thanks dmg, I know it is quite arrogant to correct English translations as the foreign speaker that I am. It just does not sound like Gateshead TO ME, that's all. I would go for something like "gatham" or similar, with an m at the end, but that one does not exist!  ;D

Listened again, and it makes sense of course, but if any, my understanding is GateshaM.. and that's still what makes me doubt it.. but that's just me.. and dmg is right..

So he kisses the Gateshead girl. Girls and cars. And cars. And girls.

The last seconds of the Hansen movie with the (obviously) last lines of the lyrics and the beginning of the outro make me think of The Scaffolder's Wife, guitar sound wise and from the mood. Agree anyone?

Thanks for the pictures Geordie_60!  Great to put a picture to the name.  I had actually been on Google maps looking at Grainger Street and the church I think is mentioned in the song - the "black church."  I plan to take some shots of these places when I'm in Newcastle in May for the gig myself.  Can't wait!

Interesting to see the Chronicle office;  if that was the office when Mark worked there it would've been a new building!

Does anyone know if there are nods to Bunting lyrically in the song?
Are motives or words taken from one of his poems, maybe the summer fair streching over the moor, the starlings or the black buildings or the shadowy Keep?

You've got to be kidding!  This is the best one on the album for quality - no doubt.  The lyrics, imagery, atmosphere, it's all there.  My personal favourite right now is Terminal but I've got to admit that I think this is a higher quality song.  Bear with it border and I'm sure you'll come to love it as I do.  :thumbsup

One of the best songs for me, especially that 'I'm a jack and a lad' refrain with the Fmaj chord is so beautiful :)

However, I don't like that mandolin and the 'Starlings swarming...' part which reminds of the one starting  "maybe once in a lifetime...' in I dug up a diamong but that one worked better IMHO.

Nope  ;D

As "Jackal" put it in the GF forum.

"...we will pass over Tepid Town, Snoozechester and Dulldale before arriving at our destination, Valiumville"

Basil is right in the middle of them. Yes, the melody is nice but the song all in all is too slooow. "Oklahoma" on the other hand is a downright masterpiece.

I shall now leave the majestic thread of "Basil" where love for soothing songs and maj7-chords roam freely and are safely tucked away in the upholstered poetry chair far far away from the brutal ramblings of those other songs above the 70 bpm speed limit.  :lol

Words of wisdom there!

There's something I've come to notice lately that in some of the slower numbers it's Mark's vocal that makes the song sound sleepy and boring.  He just doesn't have that distinctive grunt he used to or put as much effort into it these days.  Strange, because on other songs he sounds great.  Laughs, Bones, Terminal, for example he is good but on things like Long Cool Girl and Silver Eagle I just think that another person singing could really transform these songs and give them another dynamic.

That's strange because Mrs Knopflerfan and I have noted how MK's vocals have improved somewhat espeically since KTGC...
Sleepy and boring NEVER ever come into the equation with regards to MK to me personally.
There is always too much to listen too, ie lyrics & music to even contemplate snoozing. :hmm

As for this beautiful tune - it is awesome!!

He still sings with passion - he's older, but the passion is still there!   This album is the first one that I can sit down and listen to all 18 songs and get goosebumps and on some tracks, tears, because of the way he sings the songs.   I love his voice now.   ;)

I guess thinking on it for a 65 year old he doesn't do bad??!!
Maybe he hasn't got the 'oomph' anymore?? Certainly more laid back which I think is fine personally but still able to do what he does - succesfully...

I personally think he seems to have more passion for these projects of late and judging from Tracker, his heart is 100% behind everything he does still.
A lot of us are saying including myself that this is the best album yet!!

A "Jack the lad" is a term applied to a young man who is a bit cocky, self assured and a bit of a scoundrel!  I presume he used "Jack and a lad" just to fit the music/lyrics.

I think he means he is an 'ordinary guy' as well as a 'lad' i.e. he can act normally as well as at times displaying 'laddish' behaviour (childish or cocky). Its a sort of play on words. He is a bit of both.

The "pre-decimalisation" from the Hansen movie didn't make it in the song, did it?

I guess it transformed into 'payed six and six down' and was intended for first verse.

Yes of course, but if you remember the date when Hansen was in to shoot the movie, the album was long recorded, mixed and done. Basil must have had it's correct lyrics by long at that moment. So it is all made up for the movie obviously.

Title: Re: (2) Basil (5:44)

The term "sub" is short for "subeditor" which is BE for "copy editor" or "editorial journalist".

I need a little help. I'm trying to translate the Basil song into German.
I don't understand this part: "Basil sits there on the table for subs"
Justme already said something about the term "subs". That's now OK for me.

I would translate "Basil sits there at the table for subs" into "Basil sitzt am Tisch für Redakteure".

But "Basil sits there on (?) the table for subs"?
My problem is this "on".

Can somebody help me?

Hi Bluebird, The context of the "on" in this instance, is the same as for a person who sits on the board of a company, as a chair-person. So Basil is a member of the Sub-editor group at the Chronicle and so he sits on the table for subs.

Yes Thomson House as it is known was opened in 1965 so i guess MK would have been in there. Its my place of employment incidentally.

I also read that Briggflatts was released in 1965 and then he left the Chronicle in 1966, so maybe he and MK coincided before in the previous building?

Does anyones knows which BLACK CHURCH is MK talking about in the "Basil" lyrics?

I has always suspected it was the St Nicholas Cathedral, because is close to the Black Gate, but there are other churchs that are of importance in Newcastle, I recall seeing some quite nice and when you search for Black Church in internet you find nothing...

Could also be St. John the Baptist Church as it is located on Grainger Street. I literally followed the starlings in the lyrics, so I might be wrong of course.

I guess it must be a metaphore or something like that... listening to the song I recall myself walking from the  Cathedral to the Black Gate, then to the Castle, the stairs (I´m not sure if they are the Dog Leap Stairs, as there was a plaque saying Castle Stairs...), the quayside and walking towards the Metro Radio Arena...

So wonderful memories of a very very very short trip to Newcastle... it was a bit rainy, foggy and I didn´t enjoy it very much at the moment, but when I think about it... I kind of miss it... I recall saying "N'castle is nice, but probably I won´t be back" and nowadays, I think about that short trip and feel like coming back...

That is what I had thought.  If not a local name for the church then perhaps a metaphor in the song.  The starlings cast a cloud which forms a shadow over the church, making it appear almost black.  :think

I have been doing some research partly on this song and would like to add something.

Now at Thomson House, just off Grainger Street, the former offices of the Chronicle were situated in a building called Kemsley House.  It was demolished in 1965 when the Chronicle moved out to their new premises.  Mark would have worked at the former offices as he said in an interview he was working there age 14 and 15.  However, since they vacated these premises in the May of 1965 and Mark never turned sixteen until the August of that year he may well have worked for a time at the new offices too.

Here is a photo of the old offices (not mine) ;)

I love Newcastle and we go there every January or February for Transatlantic Sessions at The Sage.  It's one of my favourite cities in the UK and also one of the friendliest - people always seem pleased to talk about their city with visitors, indeed it's sometimes difficult to get away!   Can be a bit nippy when the wind blows off the Tyne, though!

I suppose the song could be about either St. Nicholas Cathedral or St. John The Baptist, but I'll go with the latter.   Both are beautiful churches and the ancient tattered flags in the cathedral always fascinate me.  I like the idea that the starlings make the church look black.   :)

I was in Newcastle for the Tracker concert last year and crossed over The Millennium Bridge to the Baltic on the Gateshead side. I was also there in February this year for Transatlantic Sessions at the Sage, but I didn't notice anything on the pavement - my mind must have been somewhere else!  ::)  It was dark when we were there for the TS concert, though.   I will have a look next time!   :)

I don't know Newcastle well enough to say which of the churches it was, but I recall when I used to visit the City with my parents in the 60's & 70's a lot of the buildings, incuding a church in that area and the castle keep, were literally black with pollution from soot & industry. many of them have been sand blasted clean since those days. When I first heard  Beryl I assumed that was what Mark was referring to.

I tend to think that this is the explanation. Basil is such a beautiful piece of music. Even when Basil "raises" his voice and wants to "Put the poems in sacks and bury me here with the hacks" the voice of MK is still soft. Time has forgiving and conciliable aspects, too. Those guitar licks appear with taste and understatement. Not one note too much.

Btw., to me the people in Newcastle were the most friendly and welcoming human beings I came across for awhile. One lad was even quite surprised, that tourists visit his city. I took a picture for a chinese girl in Chinatown and soon we were involved in a great and friendly bit of smalltalk with a Geordie.

I also love Basil -- one of my top three favorites from the outstanding Tracker collection.  I was just listening to Basil a couple of days ago, when I was struck by the beauty of the last fadeout harmony.  For me, it evokes something between a train whistle and a candle being blown out.  Or a last breath.

I was also struck by the incredibly friendly and interesting people I met in Newcastle.  Of all cities in the UK, this has been my favorite (based on the natural beauty of the city, the archictecture, and the especially warm people I met there).

I like the sentence of Mark in the Deluxe Studio Interview where he said that back then he saw Basil from the view of  the copy boy but nowadays of course thinks about time the same as Basil and can feel much more like him, now that he is older. That makes the date of release (2015 and not let's say 1978 or 1985) much more believable and gives this song so much depth and applicability.

All these songs that come from his early past and youth (Southbound Again, 5.15 am, Secondary Waltz, We Can Get Wild, Border Reiver,  One More Matinee,  not complete and  in no particular order) have a certain greatness and quality and are among his best songs which might result from the long time he might have pondered about them before finally releasing them.

Well, I will start it again because I'm really not sure now. I have found that 2 silver half crowns worth 2X 2/6 which is  4 schillings an 12 pennies. I guess that would be 5 schillings?
So, It must be that 5 cigarettes have costed "1 and six down" (1 schilling and 6 pennies).
This would be matching with the verses eventually:
"My Saturday job pays six and six down
A copy boy at the Chronicle
Five cigarettes and two silver half crowns"

My apologies if I'm over grinding :-)

That "down" is just not clear. I try to say it with examples: Could the line in question be changed with "six and six right down in my hand" or with
They paid me down exactly six and six?
 :hmm

LE

Of course it does mean that it rhymes and scans with the rest of the verse, but I'm sure that's purely coincidental!
