Broken Bones(Mark Knopfler)

LYRICS
She likes a man with a broken nose
Lucky for me, I suppose
Shots coming in like the monthly bills
Soon they’ll be saying I’m over the hill

Well the bell goes clang and you’re on your own
You take your medicine and go home
You take it like a man, on the chin
And you don’t make a fuss when the towel comes in

Now let me go home, got to lay in ice
And I don’t want to hear no more advice
Just give me my clothes
Get me out of this place
How many more stitches in my face?

Those broken bones, you pick ‘em up and carry ‘em
Broken bones, you carry ‘em home
Broken bones, you pick ‘em up and carry ‘em
Broken bones, you carry ‘em home

He had the punch lines, I was the joke
Every shot felt like something broke
It was all much more than a man should stand
And I finally went down to a big right hand

Now let me go home, got to lay in ice
And I don’t want to hear no more advice
Just give me my clothes
Get me out of this place
How many more stitches in my face?

Those broken bones, you pick ‘em up and carry ‘em
Broken bones, you carry ‘em home
Broken bones, you pick ‘em up and carry ‘em
Broken bones, you carry ‘em home

Broken bones, you pick ‘em up and carry ‘em
Broken bones, you carry ‘em home
Broken bones, you pick ‘em up and carry ‘em
Broken bones, you carry ‘em home

So this is the JJ Cale-alike song with just Mark on a little amp as he said in an interview? I wonder if the lyrics have to do with the death of JJ or if he means it is just JJ Cale-style recorded..

It's Early Bird singed by Clapton  :)

Something says to me that this is going to be one of the skippers to me... pretty repetitive, after 2 minutes of song I´m already bored... a good idea as it's a J.J.Cale tribute, but... "Someday" is a way better tribute than this one.

I like it :)

It's the repetitive style that was JJ. But it's only JJ who can pull if off to perfection, as any other top musician with his or her own trademark.

Had JJ done Broken Bones, well then people would have raved about it :)

Exactly.

Ianto does some nice build-up work on this one, I love it. So far my absolute top favourite. Hence my weed question yesterday.
The way he sings that carry "EM is exactly JJ style, singing the line one word longer. I love that.

Oh I don't take it neither  :o and maybe therefore I don't know anything about it but the cliché I mean and it sometimes SOUNDS like it.

This could have been a huge number with its funky guitars and disco rhythm. Maybe a version with a huge break with loud drums and a distinctive guitar solo! Of course the lyrics might sound inappropriate like this. Agree with LE, my favorite this far! Certainly has a JJ feel, more than anything he has done this far! Thank God his voice sounds like JJ and not Bob as he grows older! Would prefer a fade out.

trying to understand why some people rate this song.Sounds  boring and repetitive to me but there must be something there, just like song for Sonny.

It has to do with feeling.  8) :wave

Not boring at all, cool build up by Ianto, top 3 from my view of the album.

Song for sonny is a good track I thought, not on album as the feel wasn't right but live and acoustic it was a great track.

The rhythm guitar is slightly annoying ? This song has potential to be epic, but not this version. There's no guitar solo worth mentioning :-O, such potential to really nail one aswell and let it rip. The last 2 minutes drag on and on and on and on... "you can pickem up and carry em" .. and on and on and on.

You just want him to "let rip" at the end but by now we all know what to expect!  So much potential, still pretty good.  Maybe on tour...

Broken Bones just was added in my Tracker Songbook: http://amarkintime.org/forum/index.php?topic=4152.msg90543#msg90543

The song needed around 5 minutes to transcribe and to be written down. Just like it lasts on the record. ROFL.

"After I broke listons jaw, he hit me harder than any man has a right to be hit. I had to be packed in ice for five days after the fight. I can't imagine being packed in ice for 15 minutes! Five days!!!"

Mark quoted this from a famous boxer the "Evening with Mark Knopfler, at the Hurlingham Club in 2009. The broken jaw and being packed in ice for so song seems to resonate in Broken Bones, too. It seems the pure agony, the endless pain seems to be reflected in this monotonic and almost endless track? Don't get me wrong, I like every second of it, but it is unusual and I know some forumers are not happy with it..

Interesting remark, LE. So it could be Marty marshall vs. Sonny Liston http://www.boxing.com/early_train_to_broken_jaw.html (http://www.boxing.com/early_train_to_broken_jaw.html)

That evening, said the name, it was Chuck Wepner who was quoted by Mark here.

After the fight with Liston, Wepner needed 72 stitches in his face.

from Wepner's wikipedia site. So it seems this song is not so much from the viewpoint of Sonny but of one of his opponents.

Why is he so hung up on boxing?  It's a dreadful, barbarous spectator sport.  I'm sure anyone who studied neurology would be against it.  It's a bit like rugby I suppose, only less boring.

It is totally off the topic and not that I like boxing but I do love martial arts. I am old Black belt in traditional karate but you probably either hate or love the battle of warriors so to speak. So if MK has an interest here and can get inspired to do more good songs then so be it  ;)

Yes I was literally jumping up when I first heard it as I like it so much. It might be interesting to know that on this track, Guy plays bass, not Glen.

I don't know exactly where I read that, but it is pretty sure. Man, so many posts since last Wednesday, must be nearly thousands of posts about tracker in a few days.

Maybe another one can verify about Guy playing bass on this one. Would be interesting to know on which other tracks he did that on Tracker. (I know he did on Redbud Tree).

Mark about Broken Bones:
Quote
"Though listeners often insist on taking his words more literally than he means them. "If I've written a song called Broken Bones people say 'are you a boxer?'. But actually, that one is more just a figure of speech. A friend of mine said, 'This getting old shit, it ain't for wimps.' Somebody else said, 'You know, you carry your injuries.' And that's what got me thinking about that - just to use the imagery of boxing. But it's funny what people think about songs. Once the song is out there, it goes out the door, and you don't know what's going to happen to it, but that's part of the joy."
(http://www.independent.ie/entertainment/mark-knopfler-let-the-music-do-the-talking-31064547.html (http://www.independent.ie/entertainment/mark-knopfler-let-the-music-do-the-talking-31064547.html))

I just wanted to put this information of the interview to the Broken Bones thread, so it would not get lost. Found that quite interesting that the song might be connected with age. The whole song is getting just another interesting dimension. I listened to it just now with the aging sense in mind. Quite interesting which spin the song takes. It must be repetitive.

Yeah, it's actually 49 (!) bars of same chord. Can be longer I guess. I don't know why it so long. Why not 96 bars? It would be a nice hint for 96ers.

LE, I admire your admiration for this song, but while I can't say I don't like myself, I'm just wondering: Don't you think it would have needed a little more guitar action in that looooong coda? Don't you miss that at all?

broken bones reminds me of some electronic synth record from the 90's that used to be on top of the pops every week. That said I am warming to it and whilst no song is a skipper yet for me this song is the the song with the most potential to be a skipper.

It is not so easy to give an answer - well I just love the track you know!!  :wave  But maybe "dance" is the key - you know, this one makes me wanna mooooove.. and indeed it has done already, LE moving all up in the kitchen... his voice is soo cool, the wha wha sounds great - no, I have not missed a longer guitar solo for a minute, in fact the song is perfect as it is! The clapping!! Wow! The drumming, seems not everybody gets the cool stuff Ianto is doing here.. love it!
Enough said, there are enough other songs!  ;)
