Silver Eagle (Mark Knopfler)

LYRICS
It was so late and she’d be sleeping
He came through her home town
With the moonlight on the crossroads
And the green light shining down
And the bell at the railroad crossing
And the horn from far away
And his Silver Eagle passing
Half a mile from where she lay

At his feet a sea of faces
Make devotions with their love
Clap their hands and plead their cases
Call for blessings from above
Like the rolling waves forever massing
To crash and foam and creep away
And the Silver Eagle passing
Half a mile from where she lay

Road signs flow into the headlights
Whisper names and fall behind
He finds some honor in the darkness
Hopes for grace and peace of mind
And he thinks of how they’d lay together
He’d run his fingers through her hair
And he wonders if she’ll ever
Come to know that he was there

No love for Silver Eagle?

I like it a lot - it's on the top half of Tracker, but it is the lyrics that makes this one lift off.

I must be the only one who thinks it's an absolute boring song...
Good lyrics, OK
But the melody and the rhythm is plain.
Fortunately Beryl comes just after !

I'm not overly excited by it either, but it's more of a nice song I think.  Not a song one would ever jump up and rave about.  Very much a "sleeper."

Well, lyrically it's a million times better!  I think a better vocal would add another dynamic to this good song but this is too "Perry Como fireside" for me.

I wonder if old Bob will hear this and shed a tear or two. I think he will.

The song might end up being my favourite from tracker, even before Taormina. And that's IN SPITE of the synth layer that was forced upon it; can you believe it?!

If you listen to the lyrics of Taormina they're pretty contrived, cliched and crappy!  The music on the other hand...

I think "Silver Eagle" is Bob Dylan's tour bus.   :)
"Silver Eagle" is a make of motor coaches. So I guess the song is about some bus driver, and has nothing to do with Bob Dylan.

Wrong. It has to do with Bob Dylan. This is a quote from Rolling Stone Magazine, interview with MK:
Quote
Notoriously fastidious, Knopfler says he has Bob Dylan to partly thank for Tracker. Knopfler toured as Dylan's opening act in Europe in 2011, followed by a swing through the States the following year. Two songs on Tracker, "Silver Eagle" (named after the iconic line of tour buses) and "Lights of Taormina," were written during those dates. "I wouldn't have written those songs without doing two tours with Bob on buses," he says.

During those tours, Knopfler would often join Dylan and his band for the first four songs of Dylan's set, playing along with "Tangled Up in Blue," "Things Have Changed," and other Dylan songs. "Bob was quite thoughtful about it," Knopfler says. "I'd play and then change my shirt and jump with Bob and his band. I'd play about four songs and then I'd get on my coach and get on down the road and get a running start on Bob. Then they'd get on their buses and come on down the road after us." (In the CD booklet for Tracker, Knopfler included a photo of him and Dylan at the microphone, from earlier tours, as a nod to those collaborations.)

Mark said that this song came out of the Dylan tours, where they were touring in buses. I think it is about some artist in general, not necessarily Dylan, who is back in a place where he once knew someone. These lines gives a hint that the person is an artist, standing on the stage in front of a sea of faces:

At his feet a sea of faces
Make devotions with their love
Clap their hands and plead their cases
Call for blessings from above

To me, it is another song that works on many levels.

Sure, Mr. Bob D has his appearance in it ("At his feet a sea of faces[...]". But somehow it strikes me, that also the driver, or another passenger of the Silver Eagle gets in the spotlight here. Imagine this: MK travels with BD in his silver eagle. One night MK takes a seat alongside the bus driver and they start a conversation: "Ahh, I used to have a girl here....", and so on.

Could this be possible?

Post by: Mossguitar on April 08, 2015, 04:37:28 PM
Ok, maybe "nothing to do with" was a bit too strong, but I still don't believe the song is about His Bobness and his bus. It's obvious that BD, the bus rides, the tours and the situation inspired MK to wright the song, though.

Well Lis, I am not really answering your question, but it brings to mind an observation I made at one of the concerts in NA. We were all standing in the lobby, waiting to be allowed into the hall and were actually being treated to MK's sound check (Kingdom of Gold, no less) when a big, silver/black bus drove right past where we were standing and someone in the crowd stated, "Here comes Bob." I could be wrong but I never got the idea that Bob and Mark traveled together "on the bus". MK and Company had their set of buses and the Dylan folks moved in a parallel universe, so to speak. ;)

Post by: yontwocrows on April 10, 2015, 01:40:27 AM
In an interview Mark referred to when he played the few songs in Dylans set. MKs Band had a runner with their cars, and Mark had a runner together with Bob Dylan and Band in their Busses after the Dylan set. So according to Mark, there were times when they shared bus travels.

I sometimes try to second guess Mark's thinking - is he saying to himself that his fans aren't allowed to listen to rock tunes at their care homes?  Mustn't get the old dears too excited or they'll never get them to bed so easy listening only.  We still wanna rock Mark!  :wave

P.S.  Keep dancing!

Same here. However, I probably couldn't/wouldn't want to listen to such songs all day. I kind of try to save them for special occasions – because I know how emotionally I'm going to react. On each of Mark's solo albums, there seem to be one or two songs that I just can't listen to without starting to cry. Silver Eagle is the latest one, and before that: Follow the Ribbon, Seattle, The Car was the One, The Fish and the Bird, Beyond my Wildest Dreams, Back to Tupelo, Old Pigweed, The Long Highway, Je Suis Désolé ...

Definitely the best slow ones on here.  In fact, better than a lot of the faster ones too.  It's one that manages to raise itself above the level to avoid being an easy listening tune, which is easy for this style to do, and elevate it into being a really nice little number.

Help, please...Would wish to translate this song into my language for a friend of mine. For the first time I think about the meaning of the word "lay" in the verse...
"Half a mile from where she lay"
So, she lay in her bed waiting...or she passed (dead) and was put there?
Or it is something else??

Hi Slavi - The song begins with

"It was so late and she’d be sleeping
He came through her home town"

So I have always understood that she lay in bed asleep, not dead.    :)
