.38 Special (Mark Knopfler)

LYRICS
The fate of a roving gambler
Is waiting down the bloodthirsty highway
The highway is my home, I’m a rambler
And I have to pay the devil every day

Now if I should owe a friend a million dollars
He knows my guarantee is sound
If we should get hijacked by robbers
There’d be no big money laying all around

I may be gone to the devil
But I ain’t rollin’ over for you
If you’ve got a pistol in your pocket
I’ve got my .38 Special too

Are you dancing for the payers of the piper?
Are you jumping through your party hoops for them?
You won’t see any nine to fivers
At the tables of my poker playing friends

So take your politician or your banker
Take your friendly health insurance man
I never met a cold hearted gambler
Could carry off a hustle like they can

I may be gone to the devil
But I ain’t rollin’ over for you
If you’ve got a pistol in your pocket
I’ve got my .38 Special too

I don't like it either. But the lyrics are great.  :(

I think MK's "tracking back" to Lonnie with .38 Special.

I think you 100% got it. Even some words are similar. And the banjo, too :)

Does anyone else hear the voice of mighty Bob in the head when listening to the song? I wish he'd do a cover.

I guess we hear different things in these fantastic songs, that is the beauty of Knopfler's writing and performing!!

So true, therefore I am sometimes grateful that MK reveals every detail behind his songs.

Ok, now I understand that one as an intro to the next song (My Heart Has Never Changed): http://amarkintime.org/forum/index.php?topic=4094.0

I have this song stuck in my head this morning. Love the dueling banjo and warm LP tones. It's interesting how preoccupied Mark is with writing songs about people with "less than stellar" moral character. Consider Postcards, Gator Blood, Cleaning my Gun, and Behind With the Rent...I'm sure there's more...

Many harsh words said about this song. I like it too  ;)
