Hello Folks,
I got lucky this morning to win a chance to attend " Le Grand Journal TV show" where MK will be invited on the 25th March !
I dont have much information yet, there should be an interview and he should play a couple of songs live...
I will try to let you know, if I have more info till there...!
I hope some french guys could record it !

Hi there,
Little review sorry for the delay, I've just arrived home...It's easier to write on the computer than on the smartphone...
First of all, a couple of us made a naughty little joke, "MK wasn't there , the broadcast is postponded to Monday; we dont know why...., we are So dispointed blabla" I explain how it happened :)
We all thought that MK's broadcast would be aired on the same day after the live tv show with politics & co...
Just before broadcasting, we were told that MK's part would be aired on the next Monday. ( We had no way to comunicate as all our mobile pone were prohibited in the audience.... They were using detector on us before...).
So we though about our french friends who were all ready and waiting with the recorders for MK in their sofa. We imagined them thinking that we went there for nothing so we played the game of the naughty joke, till this morning... Well enough said about this...
MK was there indeed and in very good shape ! :) he was with Guy, Ianto, Dave Bronze, Robbie McIntosh !( Paul Crockford and Glen Stagger too).
Well about MK's interview, in the audience it was very hard to hear really.... Sound was low.... And the french translation covered MK's voice so it was a little messy with the two voices at the same time....
So the things I could understand... are almost here... Maybe some frenchy could add more informations :)
At the same time a french actress was interviewed (Lea Seydoux)... She's gonna be the next "James Bond Girl".
Antoine De Caunne (the presenter) asked MK " Would you, if you were asked, write the Next James Bond Soundtrack..." Of course the answer didn't surprised me....
He said, no, movie music is not his "stuff" (well he did some pretty good before didnt he?? uhh??)
He also talked about is guitar skills, his way to hold the neck of the guitar like a plumber hold a pipe... (lol He always say this one...)
He said that he is an selft-educated guitar player.... and his band are REAL Musicians.... You know MK's always so humble on his skills...
They showed some old DS video from the early years until OES... Then they talked about Tracker... ( not sure I remembre what they really said on it...).(remeber sound in the audience was bad....)
Then he went on the stage which was just on my right, So I was pretty close 5 meters or something..., and the view was good ! Sound also was good ( we had the stage's sound !).
MK played Beryl and also......

Beryl.... Yeahhhh there were two takes... apparently there was a tenchincal sound problem... that no one noticed...but they prefered to play it again...
It ended like this for the official broadcast :)
Off camera, MK and ADC had a big hug together and made a picture.... they look like real old good friends !
We were not allowed indeed to approach Mark!
I could say "hi" to Guy and Glen Staggers from my seat ;) Lovely men ! I really like them they always answer to our "Hello", or waves.
I thought they would play another song as usually they do for the Chanel's web site... and when I saw the band leaving the stage and other guys packing all...... I thought oh no.... not yet....and it was definatly finished... So no song for the web site :(
MK left the set quickly and then we were invited to leave....
Just for fun and with a huge smile ( the kidding one, you know?) I asked a security guy " Can go to the backstage, to kiss MK??"
he replied " NO YOU CAN'T"...
oh oh Well I'm just kidding man :D
Btw.....It was a very very short moment but VERY good ! It was super to meet again fans :)

Well thank you Knopflerised!!! Well done!!! We'll see next monday on TV how it was!!! And yes Antoine De Caunes and MK are certainly very good friends because it was him who started to interview Dire Straits for French TV when they started. ADC had a music tv show called Chorus where DS appeared for the first time. Then in the 80's he had one called Les Enfants du Rock, Children of Rock et ADC went over to London to meet MK!!! AMIT TV posted both interviews!! I guessed later on that they recorded the interview before 7pm because they asked the audience to come at already at 6pm!! But I still don't understand why it has to be showed next monday!!! My guess is politic because we're voting again next sunday and that terrible Airplane Crash in France!!! Lots of going on in the news here!!! :thumbsup :clap

We were asked to arrive at 16:00 at the venue, it was very long till the "tv show starts" .
There were tones of teenagers on " school trip", they didn't know who they were about to see... LOL
We had to sign paper for the image rights... We were taken our passports... We also had to leave our bags and jackets to a dressing room, one by one and were given a little paper with a number on it you know like in theatre or disco lol.
We waited a long time in a "waiting room" (almost one hour)...
Then we arrived on the set and were asked to sit to determintated places... I asked to be nearer to the stage they didn't want lol...
When we were all seated the room driver came to explain us all the progress of broadcast, he explained that on the first part we'll have fun with music and then we would talk about the terrible crash and politics...
It's funny to see how it really "works" on a tv show...
We had a break between MK's part and the Politic part... we were offred sodas and cake :)
And then the other part, not fun but intersting though ( even if the sound was still pretty bad...).
We left the set at 20:30.... and had to queue to get back our bags jackets and passports...it was 21:00...

Haha, my thoughts exactly! Much, much better than the German TV show! I wonder why he plays Beryl with a capo. For songs like BLT, SFSL, etc. I completely understand, but this is like playing Sultans or BIA with a capo.

This performance is great playing, good voice and much energy! I think this is one of the best TV appearances I have seen from him, like WII in Harald Schmidt Show 2001.

Thank you Knopflerized! That was wonderful! I loved the part sitting round the table - MK's face was priceless! Arms folded, as usual too! So funny! :lol Much better than the German show and MK looked his usual self, so I think he was either very tired, or not feeling well on the German show!

It was not postponed, this is usual that LGJ is built like that : one part is live and the other one is pre recorded.

honestly okay, there is more happiness in this french show, the german one is more a deeper talkshow with serious themes ... smaller and not so colorful.
but the mix in the german show was better - the drums were stronger actually and better played, the bass-lines much more stronger (i put both songs on our Genelecs in our sound studio) - and in the last solo Mark gives more energy and spirit in the Bremen version.
indeed, Mark seems to had bit more fun there in Paris, more "live concert" feeling.
but i prefer the mix of the german sound guys ... and when listening to both loud and on good speakers there is more energy in the Bremen session.
now you can shoot JR again. but i will survive. again.

Mark part was too short but it was better than nothing and the live song was a very good appetizer for the coming tour which is coming fast now.
Great moment and it was also a fantastic occasion to see friends I hadn't seen since past tour.

it's because it's too short. I don't see this song in a live concert, it would end before you notice it already started... I don't know if MK would play it longer with any sort of arrangements, but I dont see it...

Totally agree with you that the sound was better and I noticed this myself, but as for the actual performance...

That's a point and I don't really see a point where he would extend a solo. Perhaps extending the middle solo a little? Surely the end has to finish as it does now?

And the London Town sentence is in LaJaDaS now :P 2 songs with the same Hi-Hat intro in 1 liveshow confuses the fans. :lol

Interesting to see that Marcus Cliffe played bass on the German show, while Dave Bronze played on the two other shows. I can´t remember when Marcus was part of the promo-band the last time, must be about 10 years ago.

Clever thing Mark has done in writing Beryl; a C21st Sultans that is shorter, easier to play and means he doesn't have to play the real one any more because it sounds so similar. All he has to do is mention a few times phrases like "a throwback to Sultans" or "the hi-hat start to it like Sultans" or "that Straits sound again" and it'll be enough to satisfy some. Yes, a clever thing.
Hum, there was already a sort of SOS clone, it was called Lady Writer :think
Very true but in those days they didn't have such a catalogue of songs to choose from and - guitarists butt in here please - LW isn't really an easier to play substitute to satisfy the fans. :)

Cliffe´s Bass is really powerful when you listen at huge fine speakers on the german show (i am the only person which like this version better - my destiny heh heh) more drive - including drums. and voice is low too on the others ... btw
switch the Bremen version in the Paris studio and all would say: great

The sound may have been better on the German show but that's all. There was a distinct lack of fills making the performance feel empty and less lively. Also the solos were pretty rusty and his vocal poor. His vocal wasn't a lot better in the French version either TBH. He sings it in a completely different key and it just sounds weird!

Time is the key in all factors...
Time in the sense he didn't have a lot of time to do any Breaks/solo's by the TV show - but I'm pretty sure he will 'Branch' out somewhere 'Live' during this excellent of numbers but it certainly won't be at the end because Beryl HAS to finish like it does....
Yes the key did not suit him at all, as he had an even 'gruffer' voice for the low parts!!
Anyway Rehearsals start soon and I reckon things are just gonna be fine and I can't wait...... :wave :clap
