Title: New book about Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler
Post by: jbaent on March 25, 2015, 09:30:36 AM
I´m happy to announce that I'd written a book about Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler that it´s called "Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler´s London"

http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/Jbaent (http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/Jbaent)

It´s a book/guide about London and the places related to the Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler songs and history, the places that inspired their songs, where important events happened in their career, with pictures, maps etc etc etc

I wrote it with the big help of our friend DMG, who helped me with the English translation of the book (that was originally written in Spanish and translated to "my English" at the same time), and when it was done, SUPERVAL and Mr and Mrs TWM helped me correcting everything that was needed.

Not only that but also DMG was very kind to write and ilustrate with his pictures two special chapters about Glasgow and Edinburgh.

I used my own pictures to ilustrate the book, and when it was needed some of my friends helped me with their pictures, and Banjo99uk and Jeremiah Dixon helped me with pictures as well.

The book is released in three formats, two of them are pocket size, with pages in black and white, one of them with hard cover, and the third formar is the biggest one, with hard cover and all the pages in colour, that it's, in my opinion, the coolest, actually the three of them are nice, the more cheap one is specially perfect if you plan to bring it with you to London as a guide.

If you are planning to do the routes explained in the book, I strongly recommend you to order the book the soonest the better, as it´s self publishing, every book is printed on demand and then sent it to you, so it takes between 20 and 30 days.

You can order the book in this link http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/Jbaent (http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/Jbaent), you will find the three editions in Spanish and the three in English.

I want to finish this post thanking again DMG for all his help, and to Val, TWM, Banjo and Jeremiah Dixon, I hope they are as happy as me when they have the book in their hands.

Thank you! I really hope that like it when you put your hands on it, it was an experience to write it, reliving memories of all those places visited in the past, I hope it helps you to do that visits in the future!

And your timing is perfect. I will go to Dublin and end with 2 RAH shows, in between: Newcastle, O2 London and Birmingham (and hopefully some more if people have sparetix for me). I will take the book with me and have some sightseeing with this giude  :D

Actually I´m late with releasing the book, I wanted to release it early this year but I´ve been delayed quite a lot because of home duties and family, but hopefully I managed to take time from here and there to at least having it before the tour starts so it can be helpful during the tour.

I also wrote a chapter about Newcastle so it will be helpful for that show too  ;)

Ps/ I´ll be at the O2 and Birmingham too, if we see each other I can sign it for you, if you want, LOL  ;D

Sounds familiar, isn't Tracker was meant to be released 'In early 2015' or even 'In January'? :lol

I can thoroughly recommend this book.  If you are attending one of the concerts this tour or going to one of the cities it is essential reading and gives precise instructions with maps of how to get to the locations.

Even if you aren't intending on visiting, the content is extremely well researched and it makes for some interesting reading.  A must-have for all fans!

Does it mention Damage Management? Too bad I didn't know about your project Jbaent. I have some photos taken in 1999 from inside the place. Somewhere...  :think  :hmm

Oh yes, it talks very briefly about Damage Management and it´s location, however, if you find the pictures send them to me, maybe I can do a second edition or an annex or something... bad I didnt asked you then!

Looks very interesting indeed!

I just ordered the hardcover copy of the book.

I've been visiting London at least once a year for the last decade and always wanted to visit some of the places that aren't that easy to find.
Seems i won't have an excuse not to visit them now  ;D

I´m very happy about your reactions, this book was made thinking in all my Knopfler friends, and if it makes you happy, then imagine how I feel  :D :D :D

The idea of writting this book has been in my mind for years, as everytime I went to London with Knopfler friends and did any of the routes, having all of them gathered in a guide looked as a smart idea, but I never took it seriously, until now, and I really enjoyed it almost as much as when I did the visits I talk about in the guide.

And not only that but also I had the honour of having our Scottish friend DMG writting about Glasgow and Edinburgh! The travel throught "What It Is" spots is amazing!

Also just remind you that if you are interested in buying the book and bring it with you to London and do some of the routes, you should order it as soon as possible as I had experienced that it tales almost a month to arrive. jbaent you have to send him one. We are certifiable nuts and he already knows of our existence! He makes his living out of it!   Well not exactly his bread and butter but still... It is just a sign of respect and maybe a confirmation of his belief.   :lol

But I'd approach Mark with it if I were you. Maybe he could even sign it. I think The Man should know fans do such things about his music.

I mean — it's not that happens every day.

Your apreciation is really all I need, it's written from my admiration of the man and his music, of course, but it's made for all of you, the fans, that shared with me, that shared with other fellow fans, or that will share, all that routes in the book, it's more about us, the fans... I don't know if you get what I mean.

Again what a fantastic book, I have had chance to sit down and 'lose' myself in this fabulous book.. - A must for any DS/MK fan....
Great photo's and wonderfully researched writing too....
(dmg I Really love the Edinburgh section - Well done)

Of course personally my favourite part is the New Forest section, purely because as you all know I live very close indeed to the 'important' places mentioned in the book!!! Banjo99uk - Love the photo's!!
(The Train times to/from 'Beaulieu Road' need a bit more clarification - and I am more than happy to advise on this - being that, that is my job if neccesary!!)

You have just got to send a copy to 'MK' and I reckon even Guy would be interested too....

I'm not sure if it is a good idea to send the book to MK, just because he might feel a bit thronged, if it contains too much about his private life. I haven't read it yet, and I'm sure it is a beautifully crafted work, but since I read that there is a part about the New Forest area I do fear that he considers that as obtrusive.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to reading the book and I don't want to spoil the fun, these are just my two pennies.
Title: Re: New book about Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler

There is nothing about Mk house in London, New Forest, his studio etc, I've been very carefully about his privacy. The only reference I made is that MK and John are neighbours in the area but not any clue to exactly where.

The only exact reference is to John Illsley pub in the New Forest because it's a small and convenient hotel to spend the visit at that area.

Thank you very much! That area has changed a lot the last years, when I took the pictures used in the Silvertown chapter, my idea was to see the Barriers, and I discovered the views from the Pontoon Sock station that if you are listening or thinking about Silvertown blues, you see how it match!

Then i had the time to think it over because we went to Royal Albert Hall and to Hammersmith Appolo just to walk around, So monday when it was time to take the train back to London City Aiport, I really started to observe carefully the view!!! It matches perfectly with this beautiful song!!  :thumbsup :wave

Great book! But do we know what are the lions in the song "Lions"? Because "lions are made of stone" I have always thought that they are not the ones in the Trafalgar square (which are bronze).

Mark said in his 1991 interview that he was thinking about Trafalgar square when he was writing Lions. So probably it really was an inspiration.

Just to confirm here that my copy of the book arrived today. It was sent from France (I live in Holland). Just glanced through it for the moment, but it's very clear an excellent guide. Very detailed, lavishly illustrated, just the perfect commodity a DS/MK fan needs when on a trip to London. For those AMIT readers who haven't ordered it yet, this book definitely is a must-have, and even Mark himself should have a copy (signed by the author, of course! ;)

There's a major webstore in Sweden selling it for about 29 USD and no shipping (it's via Lulu.com as publisher so it's directly from there somehow).

Thing is... Would jbaent still see the same money in his pockets? Which would be top priority for me.  :think

Not, actually from that sellers I get very little, only from lulu, but i wanted to make it available for everyone in multiple stores even it does means i dont get anything from it, which was never the point of writting and selling it.

Dear Jabeant,

I have eagerly studied your book. After the Miles Palmer one ages ago it was long overdue that someone took the matter of an MK book in his hands and tried a new approach. And luckily it is done by a true fan to whom MK's music really means a lot. I was longing for such a book for a long time and thus I am very thankful for your effort.

I think that this book will develop further, even into a lifelong project for you. Not only by adding new places of new songs (hopefully), but also over time by deepening what you have started, meaning: adding more of MK's interview snippets etc. and adding the bits and pieces on the deeper meanings of the lyrics in his songs and of the places. The knowledge so many forumers collected in so many posts will otherwise get lost over the years.
In short, I see myself already ordering the 11th revised and enhanced edition in 2032!

Indeed, this book has the potential of growing to a large Tracker to MK's songs ;-)
And I want to ask people to buy the book through Lulu, after all his effort I think Jbaent deserves to get some money from it. Resellers also take their part, so nothing is left for him. And paying $ 3 extra or something like thatfor shipping won't do us all harm, half a pint less will do the job during the tour ;-)

Surferboy, thank you very much for your comments, I´m very glad you like it so much!

That's a nice idea, actually I had many ideas for this book that in the end never made it into the book, because it was too much work, or I might search what copyright implications might have, but it´s great that any of you could add anything to a future update of the book!

I got my hardback copy yesterday and must say how wonderful it is. Nice work Jbaent, it really is THE best guide for any MK fan. As I work all over London I already knew alot but I've also realised I didnt know as much as I thought. I must also say well done to DMG for your valuable contribution about Scotland. Although I've been to your fair shores I've still not managed Edinburgh. It's one of a few cities on my bucket list to visit. Well done again.

It's a good idea, I hope that it will be updated constantly and that more editions will see the light. Also the tunnel of love is a good edition. Very happy that the private lifes of Mk and of the persons living there are not touched. A good decision.

Thank you! I wrote a chapter about the area where MK lives and other where the Studio is, but although both respected his privacy, I had many second thoughts about it and I deleted that chapters from the book in the end.

Happy new year everybody!

As some of you already know, a second edition of the "Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler´s London" is being written, and the thing developed in a direction that will make it a "different book".

First, the title will be different as it has some new chapters that includes new cities like Leeds, New York, Pennan and some others already in the first book but that will be expanded, so the title had no longer any sense.

The main thing of the book was to be a guide of places, and this "new book" will follow that but it will be more biographically oriented, the chapters will be expanded, all of them, and obviously rewritten in this new orientation. It will include the maps as well with directions to visit the places, but the text will be oriented in a more friendly style to read it.

It will also includes many pictures, many of them new ones that were not in the first one, and a very big percentage are pictures from AMIT friends.

Many AMITers had contributed (and will contribute) to the new chapters and to expand the already existing ones, and what´s more important, the book is being written not only by me, but also by DMG, he wrote some of the chapters, I did some of the others, and we read each other chapters to add/change/improve so it´s being a very colaborative thing, so when it´s done we´ll probably use a nick name to include both as writters. The book wasn´t entirely mine as it had contributions of many people, but now it´s only mine in a percentage, so changing the credits was needed  :)

Some of the chapters needed assistance from inhabitants of the places mentioned, in the text and in the pictures, and I´m proud to thank them, but I won´t mention his names yet, I will wait when the book is done, it will take probably most of 2017 and I don´t think that it would be ready until 2018, and if MK release new songs that should be included, it could make it even longer... When it´s done, we will let you know  ;)

This means that the "Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler´s London" book will be out of print as it is before january ends. Maybe I will upload later a reduced version of it just with the London chapters as a guide for London spots related to DS and MK,  , but the book as it is today is going out of print.

If you don't have it yet and you want to have it, follow this link http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/Jbaent (http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/Jbaent), if you rather wait for the "new book", it will contain the same information but very expanded and I hope that better written  ;D with a lot of more pictures. If you already had the book, you will like the new one more, we hope so!

If when reading the book you thought that something was missing or that could be improved in any way, please let us know in this thread.

The second edition of the book is very near to the end, and between the many new chapters, there will be chapters for NEW ORLEANS and NASHVILLE related to DS and MK.

If any of you have pictures of any of those two cities that think might help to illustrate the chapters, please contact me in private. Thanks!

Hello everyone.

The second edition of the book, which is going to be more another book, will be titled:

"WALK OF LIFE, a walk through the places that inspired the songs and marked the history of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler"

Obviously the title is just "Walk of Life", lol

It's written by me and DMG, with help from many people from AMIT, specially Superval, without whom the Leeds chapter won't exists at all.

The reason to change it the name is because the first edition was mainly about London with some extra chapters about Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh and New Forest, this new one has many other cities, like Leeds, New York, Penan, New Orleans, Nashville, Alabama or Philadelphia, so it was impossible to be titled "London" anymore!

Also this time is written, and the chapters sorted accordingly, in a biographical way, and DMG wrote himself some of the new chapters and rewrote some of the old, so that made this book also different from the "London" one.

The London one had 90 pages, the "Walk of Life" one has 298 pages!

I ordered three test pressings to me, DMG and the person who is designing it and it looks very great, but need some fixes that would be done, I hope, before MK release another record and make us write new chapters or add sections, lol

Like a preview, these are the chapters of "Walk of Life":

    01. Glasgow
    02. Newcastle
    03. Leeds
    04. Deptford
    05. Islington
    06. Clapham
    07. Camden
    08. West end
    09. Notting hill
    10. New York
    11. Pennan
    12. Hammersmith
    13. Wembley
    14. New Orleans
    15. Edinburgh
    16. Silvertown
    17. New Forest
    18. Southwark
    19. Extras: Alabama, Nashville and Philadelphia
    20. Bibliography

Hello

Finally the new version of the book, with 366 pages (the old version had just 89) is ready!

Co-written with DMG. had the very valous help of many of you, too many to mention, but I want to name a few at least, TWM for helping with proof reading, Superval that helped so much with Leeds chapter that it wouldn't exists without her (and his husband!), same goes with Dan Molda (Hoops McCann) regarding the NY chapter, 3Strats with Newcastle and Pennan ones, Jeremiah Dixon with Newcastle chapter, Banjo99, Ingridswing and Knopflerfan for New Forest, I'm sure I'm forgetting someone here, please forgive me, I would ammend it on next comments!

As the book is 366 pages with so many pictures in colour is more expensive that I would had wanted, so a cheaper version in black and white has been created, all the information is here:

https://walkoflifebook.blogspot.com/2022/12/walk-of-life-book-about-places-related.html

There is 10% discount code valid until December 23rd, you need to aplly it before you fill your adress, BLIZZARD10

This is the content of the book:

01. Glasgow
    02. Newcastle
    03. Leeds
    04. Deptford
    05. Islington
    06. Clapham
    07. Camden
    08. West end
    09. Notting hill
    10. New York
    11. Pennan
    12. Hammersmith
    13. Wembley
    14. New Orleans
    15. Edinburgh
    16. Silvertown
    17. New Forest
    18. Southwark
    19. Extras: Alabama, Nashville and Philadelphia
    20. Bibliography

Also there is going to be a shorter version, just with the London chapters, in order to keep the guide spirit of it, but that version is not ready yet, so the oldest one is still available just in case your only interest in London.

I hope you like it.

I think lulu.com allows both card and PayPal.

Is the version on Amazon the same?  Someone posted a review saying it's a photocopy?

The version in Amazon looks like the black and white version of the book, which is cheaper. Before both versions, color and b/w were available, now it looks like only the one I'm b/w is there I don't know why... The book shop is Lulu.com and they distribute it in other markets, so I recommend you to go directly to Lulu and buy there.
