Shaun's Eighth Anniversary on Breakfast, plus Mark Knopfler
Shaun Keaveny

Thursday sees Shaun 8th Anniversary on the Breakfast Show. He celebrates by welcoming the one guest he's been trying to track down for all these years - Mark Knopfler to the show. Mark will be chatting about his eighth solo album - 'Tracker' which features 11 new Knopfler songs inspired by a wide range of subjects including Beryl Bainbridge and Basil Bunting. They'll chat about the album and up coming tour and Keaveny's lifelong desire to meet the great man.

All this plus Matt Everritt joins with the latest Music News and we're after your anniversary Earworms before 8am.

I only tuned in about ten minutes ago, but what a lovely interview!   It was so touching to hear about the fan letter that Shaun wrote to DS and Mark when he was 15 years old and it was returned to him with "Gone Away" written on the unopened envelope, unknown to MK!   Shaun showed MK the letter and Mark read it, live on the radio!   I'm afraid I was welling up at that point!   I hope I can listen again!    :)

EDIT:  The letter is still on the website, read by MK!

Just finished listening to all of Mark's interview and it was one of the best I have heard.  It was such a warm and relaxed atmosphere and I agree with the visitor that talking to a real fan makes the difference.   :)

Mark just mentioned a new song 'Matchstick Man' when talking about new album.
Even though presenter a huge fan, Mark answers still 95% predictable, sadly.

I agree that it was an excellent interview.  I think one reason that Mark gave such thoughtful responses was that Shaun Keaveny clearly had listened to and appreciated Tracker.  He seemed familiar with all of Mark's solo output and didn't just ask the same tired questions about a Dire Straits reunion.  Consider that the song he chose to play was "Laughs and Jokes" instead of the single "Beryl" that every other interviewer played. So Mark sounded like he was having a conversation instead of retreating into his usual stock answers.  Even though some of the answers started out in the usual way, he elaborated on them and sounded engaged in the conversation.  For instance, when asked about leaving Dire Straits, he talked about it being too big (like we've all heard before), but then added the part about wanting to use a different palette of sounds including fiddles and flutes and upright bass.

Mark seems to clam up when he feels that the interviewer isn't really interested and hasn't listened to his work.  But in this case he felt like the interviewer respected him as a musician and songwriter and not just a guitar god.  He did seem genuinely touched when he read the letter.:)

Really wish this interview had gone on much longer, purely because Mark obviously felt relaxed with Shaun...
Mark seemed to be just like he was to me when he spoke to me at Bridport in 2013 in that he was quite happy to talk and was very polite - maybe he knew I was a genuine fan!! ;)
.. What an excellent interview and great to hear 'Laughs' on Radio too.....

This link is broken, Ian, is it possible to upload it again, or does anyone downloaded this interview that can do it?

I was thinking that for the last MK records some nice interviews were broadcast and we talked about them but they are not sorted in any way, it would be nice if a thread for interviews can be created, with sub threads for every record, so they can be listed in a logical way...

Thank you Ian!

If I have time I will try to list the interviews that Mk has done for the last albums because there are many interesting things that get lost when time pass...
