I will add Terminal and Oak to the 11 songs of the record, but if I have to substitute two songs, that's Mighty Man and Beryl out.
-
It seems like the bonus tracks are pretty good stuff.......if you ask people here at the forum :)
It's not a big surprise. Sometimes it's hard to understand why some great songs are left outside the album. ???

I can't do it.
I tried to sort out "Mighty Man" (which is hard, because it's a grower for me, and it has such good lyrics) and "Wherever i go" (which is not so hard).
But in MUST "Terminal of Tribute to", "Oklahoma Ponies" and "My heart has never changed". So i give up and I strongly suggest a double album. :wave

To start with 'Oklahoma Ponies' is a good idea though I seriously doubt Mark would start an album with not his music and with 'kick ass' in the first line.

I think Oklahoma Ponies has a start/opener feel to it; it would be good to open side 2 with it, well the LP experience..
I did consider Hot Dog, but, it's too throw away for me.. I'm not keen on the sentiment behind Terminal of Tribute To..
-
I can't do it.
Really tough for me to get a 11 track selection.
The best I can do is 9. :)

2. Basil
3. Terminal of Tribute To
4. Hot Dog
5. Broken Bones

That's a surprise. Does that mean that you don't find something to love in 9 songs ? :think
But it's good for the discussion that someone is more critical when it comes to Mark's work :)

Not the first time I would be the villain of the piece. ;)
I should write a review during the Easter break. As you said, it's good to have different points of view.
About the 9 songs I did not mention : I don't like them. Just not my taste.
I can't get used to that folky jazzy crooner style. :-[

Well, after my superdeluxe boxset had finally arrived, I've listened to the songs in a proper way and have to make some changes in my 11 choices. But I guess it happens all the time, no? Sometimes a song can appeal more than another one, and it changes from time to time
My original 11 would be:
Laughs and Jokes and Drinks and Smokes
River Towns
Broken Bones
Long Cool Girl
Lights of Taormina
Wherever I Go
Hot Dog
My Heart Has Never Changed
Terminal of Tribute To
Heart of Oak
Time Will End All Sorrow
And now I cut
My Heart Has Never Changed
Time Will End All Sorrow
To enter with
Skydiver
Beryl
Beryl being a supergrower after somo more accurate listenings. I think it has its space in the record.

My 11 picks:
Beryl
Hot Dog
River Towns
Laughs and Jokes and Drinks and Smokes
Skydiver
Lights of Taormina
Silver Eagle
Heart Of Oak

Not a bad album at all..... :D

Not a bad album at all..... :D
I know, Marikablue. This is how the album actually should have been! ;)
I'm a huge J.J. Cale fan and can hear the influence, but the problem with Broken Bones is that it's way to long for what is happening within the song. It's to repetitive. Fade out could have started at around 3:10 or something.
Anyway, a problem with the Knopfler album these days is the order in which songs are put on the album and there is no dynamic balance between the songs. You can't put to many ballads on 1 album, cause then the listener dozes off in a deep sleep after 3 songs. Privateering for example really not coherent as album. What they could have done for example with Privateering is have one disc with the blues/rock 'n roll stuff and the other disc with the celtic/folk stuff.

1. Laughs and Jokes and Drinks and Smokes (This MUST be the first song of the album, perfect for that)
2. Oklahoma Ponies
3. River Towns
4. Skydiver
5. Terminal of Tribute to
6. Broken Bones
7. Long Cool Girl
8. Lights of Taormina
9. Silver Eagle
10. Beryl
10,5. Heart of Oak
11. Wherever I Go (This MUST be the last song of the album, perfect for that)
-
10,5. Heart of Oak
LOL ;D

11. Wherever I Go (This MUST be the last song of the album, perfect for that)
You're cheating! ;D ;D ;D
Can I use it too?
-
Heart of Oak is such a short song, but also beautiful I thought I could put it in this way ;D
-
Unlike with "Privateering", where I really didn't understand how "Follow the Ribbon" could NOT have been chosen as the closing number, I think this the time the album is very rounded, consistent and works perfectly the way it composed.
And unlike some of you, I don't mind that whole bonus track thing. Some songs - "Terminal of Tribute to" comes to mind - would disturb, if not destroy the mood of Tracker, the album. They're no less good than the chosen 11, but are somehow better off standing beside them. I love to listen through whole albums, and Tracker is great for that, while I tend to listen to those bonus tracks one at a time, whenever I'm in the mood for one of them.
-
To my ears it seems that the overall sound of the tracks on the bonus disc is different from the tracks on the regular album. Compared with the regular album, all tracks on the bonus disc have a distinct layer of echo (reverb) over them. Could it be that the bonus cd was remixed differently on purpose, or by different people? Should I put this topic on the Guy Fletcher forum? Any suggestions and opinions welcome.
