Title: Mark at VW release last night (15th April)
Post by: Jarle on April 16, 2015, 06:26:53 AM
Hi!

It seems that Mark did a performance at the world premiere of the new VW Transporter in Amsterdam last night:

Interesting to see the red Telecaster. WOL, I suppose...

Playback?

Only DS songs! Wow, that must have hurt...

Even a rock star must pay the bills and feed the family.

Playback?

I would have killed to see irony of the late '70s original song as playback being performed by the 65 year old folk musician.  What a sight ;D

Another "It's Money That Matters" show...

Think positively! This is surely partly because of the tour coming closer. And we hope that Mark felt comfortable to play sultans...

Before the Privateering tour he did another "It's Money That Matters" show for Range Rover in which he played Walk of Life, Money For Nothing etc, and... they were not played during the tour.

I guess that rich people money can't buy things that poor old fans can not.

Maybe yes. But think also the audience in these private parties. Mark starts to play Privateering and people will think that when this warm-up artist will quit (might occur in normal tour too, of course) and the man from Dire Straits will appear to the stage.

Oh yes, don´t get me wrong, I would pay more if I know I won´t get any DS songs and I'll get some rare MK solo songs, but the fact it´s that MK plays the DS songs he refuse to play on tour because bla bla bla reasons when there is big money on the table, that's principles...

From Guy this morning:

"The liaison with VW will benefit the tour greatly, with ground transportation of the highest standard. "

So does this mean they will be touring in VW camper vans?    Perhaps they will also save on hotel bills!   :lol

GF: "What the fans get is a FAR FAR richer experience."

Since when did they start caring about what the fans wants to hear and not what MK decides to put on the setlist? This theory doesn't resonate very well with practice.

It sure would be fun to know the price tag for that.

But most likely it is that one and only thing that money can't buy. Gotta have some principles left  ::)

Do you really think he did this gig to keep the ticket prices down for us?

IMO these things are done to help fund the tour rather than take it out of his own pocket.  Probably the same with the recent offer on the litho.

Well, I don't think that it has been an active thought. But I was meaning partly what you wrote, this is because of the tour costs.

I recall an article, or post somwhere,  that TOL was his fathers favorite song. When his father died some time ago, MK lost interest in playing that particular song, and has never played it since.
If it is true that this was the reason for not playing that song anymore, it would be irrelevant asking for it, even maybe a bit disrespectful to him.
If it is true of course. I dont remember where it was written.

It was GF´s forum, at least one post there from a peter de mooij:
Hi Doc, im not sure if it was mentioned here or that I read it somewhere else but is it true that mark doesn't want to play tunnel of love anymore because it was his late father's favourite song? i was listening to an old '91 bootleg version of TOL and alltough i respect marks wishes (off course) i do think its a marvellous epic song ! i hope someday mark will start playing it again! if not I'll allways have beautiful recordings to listen to..

GF Answer: I doubt it.

I really don't get the logic of these corporate gigs, it undermines MKs stance under the banner of creativity that he doesn't play Straits tunes to the masses any more.

So he can do a gig for private gain playing DS numbers but a charity event on a big scale is out of the question. Doesn't add up to me.

I could only manage to attend my first ever DS gig only in 1992 and then did this very silly thing : a attended another gig just one month after the first one. Alas both night were TR performance.

So, why the people that weren't lucky to hear TOL in the Straits days should be punished?

Since I follow Mark I have heard TR and RJ over 50 times.

Maybe he's just waiting that I don't attend his shows anymore  :think

I also attented many MK shows, and heard TR many times and had to wait until Alan Clark and Chris White formed The Straits to listen Tunnel Of Love live...

Also during the MK and friends concerts, MK played Your Latest Trick, that I never heard live, except the day I attended the concert, that day he choosed Baloney Again instead, that I've heard too many times already... The Straits played also Your Latest Tricks for me.

Ironic that The Straits amended my expectations when I attend a MK concert, but they playing that songs were better than MK not playing them.

I saw the Straits twice last year. I thoroughly enjoyed the shows. They did a fabulous job  :thumbsup I had an incredible time. Me and my ffriends got to hang out with Chris White  , Terrence and the rest of the band after the show. That would never ever happen with MK.  Best of all I got to hear DS songs played live because I never had the opportunity to. You could imagine when TOL was played. I was the happiest soul on the planet those two nights.

Your Latest Trick? Wow...

I do not see the point of playing YLT only for the VW gig in Amsterdam. Last time they did that one  was more 20 years ago.
I think it will be one for the next tour..

Some of the 2002 charity gigs so 13 years.  I think he played it at other gigs of this sort though. What was the Range Rover set again?

Edit:  walk of life, sailing to bla bla, romeo, sultans, MONEY FOR NOTHING, brothers, local hero, so far away.

So no YLT then!  Maybe at another PR gig or the Scottsdale one.

From Guy's forum 3 years ago:
Yes Indeed..The band was MK, myself, Glenn Worf, Richard Bennett, Ian Thomas and Nigel Hitchcock on Sax. The setlist was....Walk of Life, Sailing, Romeo, Sultans, Money, Brothers, Local Hero, So Far Away.

I don't think we ever did get the set but there were videos of Sultans and BIA.  And a great version of BIA it was too.

Walk Of Life with sax... Never a fan witnessed that. And never will, thats only for those who pays a lot of money to pay the tour expenses.

Sorry for my scepticism, but I strongly doubt it.
For the life of me I can't believe he'll play Your Latest Trick within a framework of the upcoming tour, that's a thing from quite a different opera.
Most likely VW made them such an offer, that was hard to refuse.
Well, maybe some ladies of a certain age, who are always thrilled with this song, were there.  :)

Kinda glad I never heard it with sax, honestly. :)

But then again, I liked the cajunized version with Geraint Watkins best of them all.

I don't think that YLT was such a big hit so I doubt that someone at VW really wanted them to play it. Must have been a die-hard fan, then.
Would have made more sense for them to "demand" MFN or BIA.
So maybe MK himself wanted to play YLT...?

I think they just did it so Nig wasn't twiddling his thumbs.

Leaves me wondering how many private gigs there are we don't know about, and what songs were played...  :think Private Investigations? On Every Street? Tunnel of Love? Water of Love? Don't even want to think about it  :disbelief

My humble opinion: I don't like VW and I don't like private (corporate) gigs. But if it helps to subsidise the tour or the studio one has to live with it, I'd say. As a compromise the management could offer a soundboard audio recording from these gigs for a small fee.

I do think there is a line or two about that in the contract which say they can't unfortunately..

Nail on head.

Perhaps he's even finally retired MFN from the corporate gigs now?

They were there in Hannover as well.

Seems like there is no sax in SOS.
And is that Dave Bronze on bass again?

He still got it though! I hope just not for a certain price tag  :(

Also during the MK and friends concerts, MK played Your Latest Trick, that I never heard live, except the day I attended the concert, that day he choosed Baloney Again instead, that I've heard too many times already... The Straits played also Your Latest Tricks for me.

I attended all 4 2002 gigs and IMHO Baloney Again was a better choice, although not as popular as YLT.

Despite the eight  shows attended in 2001 I had no memories of a really great 2001 live version.
In 2005 I managed to get it in A'dam or R'dam and though "not good".

But I really enjoyed the 2002 version with great first solo from Robbie before Mark took over him.

Regarding YLT I had never been fond of it, MK in Beaulieu had a sore throat so the best one was probably on the opening night. But honestly I have no memory of it. For me the highlight of these 2002 shows were BA and WYM.

Strangle feeling.

Mark as a VW car's seller.

Should have preformed that one :

Don't you get it I don't want to buy your car
Don't you get it I don't want to buy it
Don't you get it I don't want to buy your car
Don't you get it I don't want to buy your car

I asked Guy on the forum and he responded 'SLQ'.
What does that mean?

Setlistquestion. I think he didn't understand that you were talking about setlist of shows that are history, or he doesn't want to talk at all about setlists

Thanks Ingrid, makes sense now. Too bad Guy didn't confirm.

He will not answer this one: Probably only DS songs on the setlist. I think he is having enough off the discussion about that.
