Title: Your favorite Knopfler guitar solo
Post by: 11-54_Stringcheese on June 23, 2015, 11:02:45 PM
One solo. With DS, solo, as a sideman, whatever.

For me it's the live version of You and your friend, especially the second half. In my opinion it's his most intense playing ever.

I also love this solo probably the most from Mark. I still get chills at the end of the song.
No wonder this song gained very high results in MKNews poll of favourite live recordings.

too hard to chosse
at first I was going to say It never rains (studio version), but then I thought Single handed sailor (studio version or amsterdam 79) and then Portobello Belle 22 june 83, and then Once upon a time (Alchemy), and then Angel of mercy (studio or werchter 81), and then six blade knife (17/02/79), and then Telegraph road (alchemy or RAH 23/05/96) and then.... oh god too hard to choose

we often think to solo, but his rhythm work contains also fabulous gems : setting me up, single handed sailor, skateaway, one way gal, man of peace, communique, in the gallery, no can do, etc...

It never rains is a good candidate :)
I think it would go a TR final solo. Which one ? Alchemy is fab but short, 92 versions are out of this world but too fast, 96/01/05 versions are almost perfect.
But I also love TOL final solo, 83-85 versions are great but my ultimate favourite would be Munich'91, so much emotion...
Of course Sultans final solo is also great: Alchemy, 85 versions with sax, 92 versions with sax...
PONO and YAYF are also great...
On solo, KOG, HFB, YTC, SAN,....
Too many to choose from !  :)

This is hard, but for me even better candidate is “Our Shangri-La” from Real Live Roadrunning DVD.
I judge it overall by sonic quality of recording, by mix, by mood, by notes played, by everything.

Redbud Tree, simple but really beautiful. It's the song that made me fall in love with the sound of the Stratocaster and which encouraged me to lay down the picks my guitar teacher forced me to use, quit guitar lessons and start fingerpicking. So it's not only beautiful, but it's also precious to me. :) remember sitting in my father's chair with my eyes closed listening to Privateering on my iPod, and this one hit me immediately.

The solo(s) in "Feel like going home" on that TV-special with Tom Jones.

It's got everything, it's the perfect guitar solo imho.

I get the chills everytime I listen to it. The solos in i.e. TOL or SOS are more of iconic pieces. But like with BB King, one note can say more than hundreds.

edit... The solo in Metroland is a strong runner up.

The sound is great, but I find the Shangri La outro solo extremely boring. It just goes on and on without adding anything. Almost as meaningless as the outro on Why Worry hehe. (Just my opinion - no right or wrong answer of course.)

The Bug, On the Night-Encores

Yeah! A good one. One of the best Strat tones I ever heard. Very cool phrasing. If I'd want to learn a solo from On The Night, it would be The Bug.

Some of my favorite guitar solos are:

"Are we in Trouble now" from A Night in in London 1996 - brings always to tears to my eyes
"Brothers in Arms" and "Sultans" from Mandela concert 1988
"Brothers in Arms" from Monserrat concert 1996
"Feel like going home" with Tom Jones
"Tunnel of Love"
"Telegraph Road"
"Why aye Man", especially the version of Paris 2008

Unfortunately MK doesn't play these kind of solos these days.

It depends on your mood I guess, and like everyone else I find it hard to choose.

But some of my absolute favorites, which I haven't seen mentioned, are Love over gold and Fade to black.

I too love the Shagri-La outro on this show : aerian feeling, serinity, landscape...gorgeous

but of course, it's not the usual iconic mark'style playing, so that's why I would not vote for this one as my fav solo, even if I would put it in top ten

Tunnel of Love, especially from 1985.

Talking of Strat sounds, IMHO one of the finest is on the EP song If I Had You.  Beautiful outro.

totally agree on both points

the strat sounds around 83 are indeed gorgeous : the tone on smooching is one of my fav, and very similar to if I had you

"Brothers in Arms" from Monserrat concert 1996
"Feel like going home" with Tom Jones

Yep, these ones. I guess it has to do with that particular era and the power of the Les Paul. Maybe I would add "Layla" from the Montserrat concert as well.

I don't know this one in particular, but I don't like very much his solo on Badge on 88 tour, I prefer EC's one, because Marks keeps in D minor pentatonic scale which doesn't fit to the song imho,.
Eric is more in D7 scale (or G major scale) which fits more with the chords progression.

but of course just a matter of taste  :)

yes I love this song. it gives hapinnes imho, and the 2nd solo is wonderful.
the werchter 81 version brings me to tears, don't know why, but I love the way he introduces the band during this solo

I've forgotten mentioning the Solo from "Once upon a time in the west" from Alchemy 1983. Is there anyone who likes it too?
In any case for me it's a more interesting Solo than Sultans.

How I love those posts where we finally end up listing all solo's MK ever recorded :)
Anyways, besides Redbud Tree, the final solo of Sultans is ofcourse breathtaking, especially the twiddly bits. Nobody's got the gun has also got a very nice solo, though the songs itself is a bit boring. The solo guitar has got a good MK sound on it. Same goes for Golden Heart, the first solo is really beautiful. For more recent work, the solo of Basil after "he goes out into the dark" perfectly captures those words, the first notes a very well chosen. The low notes start on Camerado is very good too...

Although i have the feeling EC is not playing a D-mixolydian scale during his solo at all ( not present in the sample) but for me it seems EC plays an A-min.blues scale and Mark a regular A-minor (aeolian) scale (both with a lot of fills).
you can hear Mark playing a little D7 arpeggio (offcourse over de D(7) ) chord and tricks it with bending the F# to a G note to continue with the A minor scale. And at other moments he seems to bend the E-note a whole to F# let it ring and it up a half note up to G without releasing the E note.

I give you the credits for the other 1988 shows... but during this particular gig he nailed it and a bit kicks EC''s ass  :o

But heeee indeed its all theory ( i am sorry) , a good guitarist can let me cry with one touching note and a really really, good guitarist by knowing when not to play a note........the latter are hard to find.

I love them all. Will choose just one that comes straight to my head. I think I love you too much - Notting Hillbillies at snape. When everyone falls into groove it enhances the MK solo. A magic moment. One of the live shows I would love to have been and still wait for a decent produced and mixed  CD release.

My first post here, I'll take time to introduce properly at some point, if there's a thread for it.
I have hazy memories a very inspired solo mark played during Water of Love in Béziers in 1996 but unfortunatly I never heard it again, so it may not be as good as I remember it. Has anyone ever heard of a recording of that show? I sure would love to be able to listen to it!

The version of Water of love from Vaison 96 is very good and in superb soundboard quailty.
Can't choose a best one, there are too many...
Sultans of swing - Basel 92
Are we in trouble now - NHB London 97
Brothers in arms - Music for Montserrat
Feel like going home - For one night only Tom Jones 98
You and your friend - On the night
If this is goodbye - Real live roadrunning
Tunnel of love - ...has to be in the list but can't a best version right now

Welcome to the best MK forum, Pimo! I wasn't able to locate the version you have heard, but if you heard it somewhere and not live, then it exists and it will surface eventually. Take a look here for recordings from that tour: http://tracker.knopflertk.net/torrents.php?cat=7&page=0

The Vaison is indeed easy to find: https://youtu.be/hd-gDSa9yx8  but the solos are very small, although superb. And the fact that he plays Water of love in this whole tour  with his Gibson Les Paul and not his National steel is a very nice surprise, which by the way brings this song closer to the mood of the GH album. This one is a bit better played, but the audience is heard too loud and spoils it somehow. https://youtu.be/zMzadtXMB-Q

Last but not least, this comes from the wonderful TNH live at the Snape. (One of my favorite lives. I wish it would be made available officially with fixed sound. It contains my all time favorite version of I think I love you too much)  The particular version slightly suffers from  the sound of the guitar imitation, since he recreates the national steel sound with his pensa. But it is a very nice version, and the solo is very smooth. I guess the GH tour versions are much after this, since they  are different but not so much in mood, as in the lead guitar sound.   https://youtu.be/JYzmW2Kgghc

Thanks for your replies
I saw it live. I was there in Béziers and it was my first MK concert ever, I was 15. I heard other versions from that tour after that but none captured what I felt in Béziers. But then again it was live, it was my fist time and it was a song I wasn't expecting at all in such a surprising arrangment, so I guess I was ready to be stunned. Vaison version of two days later may be just as good, as I said I've never heard it again.
I seem to recall a somewhat longer solo. It's surprising how some moment still flash in my mind. I have never searched for a recording of this show but I would love to know if one had been made.

Such a tough call.  All are equally favs of mine on this list, and more I can't think of atm.

Ds:
Sultans alchemy version
It never rains
On every street!! (ostatinato outro riff)
Tunnel of love
Telegraph road (happy and sad solos both)

MK solo:
You don't know you're born!! (Simple perfection)
Speedway to Nazareth (chills down spine good)
Darling pretty (perfection)
Piper (tears to eyes good)

More emotion in those solos for me than some entire genres of music.
