Title: Non MK songs played at MK/DS concerts besides "I´m Singing In The Rain"
Post by: peterromer on July 31, 2015, 08:04:46 PM
Which non-MK songs has MK played at any MK/DS concert that were not his own (besides the Dylan, EC, E. Harris, NHB etc etc. concerts) ??
If you think of a pure MK/DS concert.

Unfortunately it was not recorded like the rest of the concert (because it was played in the break) and FM broadcasted, but in 1992 in Copenhagen he played "I´m Singing In The Rain" because it rained so much. And "Olé Olé" the same night.

There must be others that he has found fun in playing live ...

- Nadine (Chuck berry) - barbarellas 78
- Happy birthday (to jack Sonni) - BIA tour (not sure : Manchester ?)
- and of course the 3  different variations on Ole ole/ Ae Ao at many concerts

and then you have song quotes, but it's another story

There's also the various "lines" played in TOL of other songs, especially during the BIA tour.

He often puts local tunes in too like: Waltzing Mathilda (Final OZ) or Scotland the Brave (embedded into Sultans, Edinburgh '85).  Didn't he play Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen once (2001)?

Dallas Rag is another he played on occasion.  Also on the December '85 shows, including the aforementioned Edinburgh one(s).

I can offer nothing directly but I do wish that MK would perform songs he didn't write.  I would find that interesting and a bit of fun. I have a feeling, though, that the average concert-goer (and we, here, are not average concert-goers when it comes to MK) would not be so happy about it.

I know I bang on a bit about "Mr Bob" but he often performs others' songs. There is even a book on the subject ("The Songs He Didn't Write - Bob Dylan Under The Influence" by Derek Barker). It has over 500 pages, about 400 pages spent listing and describing the songs (who wrote them, who performed them and when and where Dylan played them). Q: How many songs? A: 550 songs. I repeat, five hundred and fifty songs!!!

Now these are only the ones of which we have recordings (or, in a few cases, known recordings not in circulation) . Also, the book was written in 2008 and "Mr Bob" has continued to perform the songs of others.  Indeed, he has put 2 such albums since then (the Christmas one and the Sinatra-inspired one).

And I haven't mentioned all the songs he broadcast on the "Theme Time Radio Hour" programmes (there are 101 programmes, each one hour long, of course ) - or the "Artist Choice - Bob Dylan" CD (complete with his own liner notes on each song) - or the Hank Williams and Jimmie Rodgers tribute CDs that he "curated".  I could , but won't, go on. Whatever else you may think of "Mr Bob", he has acknowledged,  honoured and paid respect to many of the songwriters and performers whom he admires and/or have inspired him over the years. It is a worthy trait.

So,  in respect of MK, why not compile a list? Not just the few concert performances as DS or MK but all the songs performed by the NHBs (and any other groups in which MK was involved) and all the guest or tribute appearances and so on and so on.  Sharing the stage with "Mr Bob" will definitely count.

Anyone out there up for this challenge?

Didnt he do some Marvin/Shadows stuff during the Two Skinny Kids gig and a STP show with Emmy? (Lost on the River?). During KTGC he performed Joe Brown's Picture of You (?) with the man himself I believe.

None of the Emmylou songs that were played in 2006...  ::)

But to be more honest, "Born to run" was written by Paul Kennerley and has only been covered by EH. So that one must count right? :)

"Tulips From Amsterdam" was a hit by Max Bygraves back in Britain in the late 1950s. It got played a lot on the radio, possibly into the early 1960s.  MK is sure to have heard it in his youth. I would suggest that it was played more as a bit of a tease - is that right.

Here it is on Wiki:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulips_from_Amsterdam

There were a few "European-sounding" songs in the UK charts back in the 1950s. "Que Sera, Sera" and "The Happy Wanderer" come to mind pretty quickly. I'd bet that MK can remember these, too.

I never saw the "Hans Christian Andersen" film  but, by golly, the songs were played on the radio a lot - "Wonderful Copenhagen", "Thumbelina". "The King's New Clothes" and "The Ugly Duckling" - over and over again. so, once more, I'm sure that MK would have heard them when he was young.

If you want a really tenuous connection between "Wonderful Copenhagen" and  "Mr Bob", here it is. In late-1965 and early 1966, he flew to concerts (with the Hawks, later The Band) in North America in a private plane owned by his company - an old Lockheed Lodestar from WWII. And, during WWII, this aircraft was owned by the Norwegian government-in-exile and, as a civilian airliner (that is, unarmed), flew the service from RAF Leuchars in Scotland to Bromma Airport, Stockholm in neutral Sweden. The most direct route was across the Skagerrak (the stretch of water mentioned in "Wonderful Copenhagen") and a very dangerous route it was in wartime, too. It wasn't the only aircraft on this wartime service but was probably the longest serving. There, I told you the connection was tenuous.

Not so good at all, I am sure there's a bootleg of the concert called Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen for precisely this reason! ;)

Does Bruce Springsteen's Tunnel of Love count? It's hidden inside Tunnel of Love from the Mandela warm up gigs and the OES-tour.

"Wonderful Copenhagen"  again. In the days before pop charts for the sales of records, there were charts for the sales of sheet music.  Just out of idle curiosity, I dug out a reference book of mine and looked it up.  "Wonderful Copenhagen" entered the sheet music charts in January 1953, reached No.2 and stayed in the charts for 31 weeks but, later in the year, it re-entered, got to No.18 and stayed for 6 weeks.

In total, then, "Wonderful Copenhagen" was 37 weeks in the charts in 1953, the second most number of weeks that year. It was beaten by "I Believe", which was 38 weeks in the charts, though it was a further 3 weeks in the charts in 1954.

MK would have been quite young at the time but I'm sure he would have heard it on the radio and possibly around the house.

During the part where MK introduce the band, he played a few tones from Bruce's tunnel of love. For the warm up gigs he took a bit from the synth/organ theme from the intro. On the OES your he played the melody from the part near the end where Bruce and Patty sings "Yahoo hoohoohoohoohoo..."etc. and Nils Lofgren plays the same melody on the guitar.

still, not many cases where he is not joined by an artist..right?
also, to come back to twm's post, one can not recommend the three theme time radio hour seasons done by bob. they were of the finest pieces of radio/music i have heard, and show bob in a totally different daylight.

if we count the musical quotes like in TOL (Animals' don't let me be musiunderstood, Supremes' in the name of love, Doors' riders on the storm, ....) then we can count the strangers in the night line in Calling Elvis (in 2001, and with the NHBs, around 1999 or 2000).
I guess it's more a Hendrix quote, as Jimi used to play this line in wild thing

there is also the line from Neil Diamond's you'll be a woman soon in Why Aye Man 2008

I´m not sure if that was intentional or just a natural notes progression in the solos...

yes I thought the same, but I remember it was discussed here some years ago, and someone said it could be a "private joke" for the band, because Richard had played with Neil diamond

Remember MFN during Coyote (Paris 2010), Four in a row during Why Aye Man (Privateering Disc 3).

Somewhere in this thread, I seem to recall, I ventured to suggest that MK might like to play some songs he hadn't written himself. And, being me, I also pointed out that "Mr Bob" had done this a lot of times over his career.

Here's a sample from the current tour:
