I'm sure you will enjoy it, jbaent.  We have booked for The Sage at Gateshead on 9th February.   I'm looking forward to seeing Paul Brady this time, plus all the others, of course!

I will looking forward anything you can tell me about it! How long they play, how they do it (singers coming in and out, all together), if there is a programme to buy, anything, I don't mind about spoilers!!!

So excited!

Most, if not all, of the musicians are on stage at the same time.  There is usually a small lounge area at the back of the stage where the guest artists sit waiting for their spot, enjoying a drink or two!   They usually play for about two hours with a break in the middle  There hasn't been a programme so far.   I really love these shows and they have introduced me to so many musicians that I wouldn't have known before.    I hope you have a good time!    :)

Also the MK folkies, Phil Cunningham, Aly Bain, and Donnald Shaw who also has played in MK records are highlights, but Paul Brady and Jerry Douglas alone make it worth!

I was a fan of the folk group, The Johnstons, back in the 60s when Paul Brady was a member, along with Adrienne and Lucy Johnston and Mick Moloney.   I really liked Paul Brady's singing voice and it's good that he is still performing, as is Mick Maloney.   The Johnstons were a terrific band and I have a few of their albums.

Hi jbaent.   We have now arrived home after a very enjoyable couple of days in Newcastle.

We both enjoyed the show very much, but Aly Bain was missing from the band.  Unfortunately he became ill on Tuesday and has had to rest at home.   We weren't told what is wrong with him.   It is always good to see Aly, but the rest of the band managed fine, especially John McC who is the only other fiddle player.

There were lots of highlights, especially Dirk Powell who sang songs relating to his grandfather, including Waterbound, which was especially good.    After the interval there was a very unusual song with Sarah Jarosz accompanied by Jerry Douglas, which I enjoyed very much - a kind of non-singing song, which you will know what I mean when you hear it.

John Doyle joined John and Mike with Donald Shaw on piano and sang a great version of False Lady in his own inimitable way and his sense of humour had everyone laughing.   I have heard him sing this with John and Mike a few times before and it always goes down well, especially his description of the song!

We both enjoyed Paul Brady's performance and he sang a few quite modern songs which he had written and another traditional song which I hadn't heard before.   Even though he is 73 he is still pretty energetic - I think I first heard him with the Johnstones when he was still in his teens.

There was a lot of banter to and fro between Phil Cunningham and Jerry Douglas, which I hope you will appreciate.

Another artist who impressed me was Leyla McCalla, who is of Haitian descent and she played some songs accompanied with her cello.  She usually plays with a banjo, but, unfortunately, it was damaged beyond repair en route from the USA.   I liked her voice very much.

As usual there were loads of jigs and reels which John & Mike & John Doyle do brilliantly, also with the whole band.

This morning we decided to visit Whitley Bay, Cullercoats and Tynemouth.   It was bitterly cold with a gale-force wind, but the sky was a brilliant blue.   We took some pictures of Spanish City and had a coffee inside at a place called "Valerie's Tearoom" which I thought was apt!  We also took a look at the Tunnel of Love lyrics in the paving!  We then moved down the coast a mile or two to Cullercoats and it was extremely pretty with a beautiful sandy beach. I hope it is warmer in summer!   ;)

Anyway, jbaent I hope you enjoy the show as much as we did!   :wave

Sounds like you had a great time Val and that the weather is much the same as here...minus the rain!

Hope Aly is doing well; there's always good banter between him and Phil.  He's not only his sparring partner but a great musician too.

Just back from my weekend on Bath and Bristol. I liked a lot both cities despite the constant light rain. We were able to walk the cities and see most of them but we ended soaked and the wind was also very unpleasent, but it was worthy anyway.

The show was absolutely amazing, I loved every bit, and it was a dream made true as I've being a fan of Jerry Douglas since the first time I listened to the "Alison Kraus and Union Station live" record, almost twenty years ago, and I was so amazed by that dobro sound. Seeing an American legend like this across the pond was a great chance that I didn't want to pass, so seeing him alone made this very special. Also discover he's not an excellent player but also a very funny person was so great!

Also was very special seeing Paul Brady playing live for the first time, I loved every bit of the songs he played, also very funny on stage.

Phil Cunnigham, another legend, wow, this show was an unique chance to see so many legends together. Also a very funny man!

Of course or Macs played beautifully, always a delight to see them play. There was there also Donald Shaw, who plays accordion on some MK records, great to see him too.

Dirk Powell was also very special, loved every song he played. I spent the week digging in his records, and he has great stuff. I'm on my way to become a fan for sure.

From the rest of artists, I loved quite a lot what Sarah Jarosz played, thie week I'm going to listen to his records as she's very good. The song she sung with no vocals (great descripton, Val!) together with Jerry Douglas was the highlight for me, with McGoldrick playing also very very beautiful flute.

Also John Doyle was very very funny, I was laughing for quite a while when he explained about the song was about to sing, and ending saying he was available for playing on kids parties LOL

A very very special night, I'm so proud and happy for attending this!

After the show some fans went to talk with Mike, who was very happy to learn some MK fans were there and enjoyed the show. He didn't said us much as he obviuosly can't, but he hold us they (John and him) were going to London tomorrow (meaning sunday) so probably they are today at British Grove recording with MK. He also told us that as they have a tour with John Doyle, they would go the studio any chance they have, when they are playing close enough to made the morning trip and went back to the city they have to play. Looks like this time they are going to have more presence.

I made an audio recording of the show, if I can during the week I will check how it sounds, as I left the recorder on the floor to avoid being catched from security.

Thank you, jbaent, for your review.   Sorry the weather was so bad, at least it didn't rain in Newcastle, but was very cold and windy!

Great to hear that you enjoyed the show as much as we did.   I'm glad you were able to understand John Doyle's beautiful Irish accent,  and his hilarious description of the song!   ;D  I love his guitar playing, it is so recognisable.

We will be seeing the boys, John, Mike and John Doyle, on 25th February in Otley, so we are looking forward to being there to hear them again.   Maybe we will get a chance to speak to them as it is a very small venue - around 150 people.

According to Phil Cunnigham, Aly Bain had an accident riding a horse in the middle of the tour, he and Jerry were having a good laugh about that!

Donald Shaw. I try to remember which album MK Donald played on.
Dirk Powell is also one of MK favorite musicians (he was mentioned often on radio shows)

Donald Shaw is on KTGC and others I can't remember now, maybe Privateering... also on the Local Hero Musical demos.

His name is not in the booklet of the album. Joe Shaw is in KTGC :) He's not in Privateering either.

mmmm, that's true, I confused him with Ian Lowthian... However I do think Donnald Shaw was on something from MK.

https://donaldshaw.net/about/

"In the last 20 years he has recorded and performed in many unique scenarios, with artists such as James Taylor, Alison Krauss, Mark Knopfler, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Vicente Amigo, Rosanne Cash, Julie Fowlis, James Grant, Tommy Smith and Ornette Coleman."

Probably it is just the Local Hero musical, as he's on the credits for "Rocks and water":

Damian Humbley - vocals
Mark Knopfler - all guitars
Dave Milligan - piano
Guy Fletcher - keyboards
Ian Thomas - drums
Ewan Vernal - bass
Donald Shaw - accordion
John McCusker - fiddle
Mike McGoldrick - whistle

And Shaw was also on the Vicente Amigo record. MK doesn't play on this one, but it was produced by Guy, with most of MK musicians, and surely MK was there as he's friend of Vicente Amigo.
