I found myself a flophouse
And I hit the streets at nine
Get some grub and drink a beer
Maybe go down the line
As a non English speaking person, I thought about the phrase "down the line" more than once, also because you can find it in Laugh & Jokes & Drinks & Smokes, too, albeit in another context. When I googled a bit I found out that it is a slang term for taking cocaine. Can anyone confirm this? As I found out this coincidentally, I wonder how many other terms I did not understand correctly...

Yes I agree, it certainly means to 'take drugs'.....
Flophouse is slang for 'Dosshouse' - a place that is cheap to lodge.....

You have a worrying amount of knowledge about this Knopflerfan. I must have led a sheltered life!

I did not have that feeling that ...Maybe go down the line refers to cocaine in River Towns. I just don't have the sense, neither from the storyline in the song, nor from "A Room Forever". I might be missing something, but my interpretation is the character is down the street (into the seedy part of a seedy town).
