I'm playing a gig in Edinburgh tonight with a very talented singer-songwriter called Emma Forman.
I've found out that the gig is being streamed live on the internet here:
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/live-at-the-ark
I think we're on some time between 8 and 9pm UK time, please tune in to see how many of MK's licks I rip off. ;)
-
yep. i am planning on visiting edingburgh in july, to meet up with BPD, and forgot you live somewhere near there too. would be indeed great to meet you 2 at the same time.
-
Apologies, I got to the gig and they told me that the online stream wasn't working.
But interestingly someone in the audience's dad went to school with MK.
That's sweet that you guys are having a holiday together, of course I'd like to meet up. I'll ask some of the guys at work where the best gay bars are so you can feel comfortable.
-
now now dusty, ...seriously though. we gotta meet up. in a straight bar...although, i learned from experienced that some of the finest straight women can be found in gay bars...
-
Dusty, I hope the gig went well for you both! :)
-
nice reply. now dusty, whassup..are we gonna be seen drinking wine coolers together, underthe edingburgh sun? seriously, i would rellay love (in the friends way) to meet up with you both to drink some of that almost-as-good-as-belgian-beer scottish ale....

Made my Edinburgh Festival Fringe debut last night, some videos on here:

Further shamless plug, I've written and recorded a couple of new songs, have a listen to them here:

Well done! It's really impressive that MK inspires so many fans to pick up an instrument. By now "Dead On The Road" is my favourite! And I love the acoustic outro on "Matty's Blues (It'll All End In Tears)".
-
Are you singing here? Sounds great anyway! :o

Yup, it's all me!
And I love the acoustic outro on "Matty's Blues (It'll All End In Tears)".
Thanks, I was trying to sound like Willie Nelson but ended up getting nowhere near! Seems tone really is in the fingers.
-
Hi dusty! I am SO impressed with your songs - I really love them both. I would never have thought the singer was you at all, I would have said it was an American singing. The guitar is great too! I am a fan! ;D

Aw, thanks Val.
The singing one is a difficult one, people say "You're Scottish, you should sing in a Scottish accent", but it just ends up sounding like The Proclaimers. :) Besides, it's an American art form, so that's just being true to the source I reckon. I don't consciously do it, it's just how I've always sung, I guess from having grown up singing along to Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers etc.
-
American or Scottish, I love the songs! Your voice has amazed me! :P
-
American or Scottish, I love the songs! Your voice has amazed me! :P
My voice is my least favourite part, I'm reasonably pleased with the guitars but I find it very hard to listen to me singing. The bits with harmonies seem to make it a bit more palatable. :)
I hope to have my album, The Late, Great Dusty Valentino, completed this year and the first copy will be winging it's way to you Val as my number one fan. :)
-
Oh, thank you, dusty, that's very kind and I am looking forward to the album! I hope it sells a million! :D
-
Truly, an album? oh happy fractious day calhoo calhay. Or something. When? When? May I have number five? (I figure there's family and best friends and all before me. :lol )
-
Number 2 most definitely winging it's way to No Cal!
3 songs down, guess I need another 10 or so (gulp!)
-
Just put me onto your list! I never knew your avatar had a "real" meaning! :lol
Really, sounds astonishingly great! I always thought we all were just a bunch of nerds with too much time... but some real talented blokes seem to be around! :o

Sounds fantastic, Dusty ;D Thanks for sharing the shameless plug and let me know when you're up on Amazon :o

No, I'm a nerd with not enough time!
Of course copies of my album to any AMITers who want it. :)

put me on the list!

And another one on the list here :)
Would love to hear an album of one of our AMIT-ers

Just listened to the 2 songs. Nice. Reminds me of Grayson Capps a bit.

I think the saying means still having your cake after you've eaten it but I much prefer your version ;D
-
I think the saying means still having your cake after you've eaten it but I much prefer your version ;D
I don't understand. How could you have the cake after you've eaten it. Even then, wouldn't you just want to eat it again?
Surely the saying should then be "He wants to have two cakes"?
-
History
The phrase's earliest recording is from 1546 as "wolde you bothe eate your cake, and have your cake?" (John Heywood's 'A dialogue Conteinyng the Nomber in Effect of All the Prouerbes in the Englishe Tongue')[1] alluding to the impossibility of eating your cake and still having it afterwards; the modern version (where the clauses are reversed) is a corruption which was first signaled in 1812.
Paul Brians, Professor of English at Washington State University, points out that perhaps a more logical or easier to understand version of this saying is:
-
You can't have the cake after you've eaten it, that's the whole point. But don't ask me, I am just a frog living in the land of saunas...
But 2 cakes is never wrong!
-
Off to my brother's wedding in Sweden next month. :)
-
Where exactly?
-
Ah, now you're asking... is it Huddingsval or something like that? It's about 3 hours by train from Stockholm.

I've recorded a Christmas classic for you all to "enjoy", Merry Christmas everybody!

That was a good thread. Being new and all, i try to read as many to get into the spirit. The cake thing had me baking...In Greece the saying is like that (word for word, hope you get the meaning): to have the pie whole and the dog full -fed. Meaning to have two goals with only one ball hitting the back of the nets (this mixing of metaphors is obnoxious, i know, but i can't help it.)
Now the serious side:
Dead on the road & Social... acoustic guitar reminds me of Paul Simon's songs. And the voice, is like Brendan Crocker's, at least more so on Dead.... And the electric guitar parts are quite amazing. I really liked the lyrics of Social... Bravo! (a bit depressing, like the documentary that brought in my mind "Vinyl" by Zweig, or "hotel room" by Loudon Wainwright III.)
You are on to something great. Thank you.
(i couldn't get the christmas song, but Merry Christmas!)

Very enjoyable! Is the singer Emma Forman? How is your album coming along btw? :)
-
This should be in "The Unknown Greats" thread. Well done, keep going.
-
I love that dress!!! :)
Great sound Dusty. It looks like you`re all having fun on stage and thats the main battle.
-
Great stuff. Love the outfits, Dusty :)
-
Thanks for all the kind comments folks.
Is the singer Emma Forman?
No, Emma is mainly based in Glasgow these days so I don't really get to play with her anymore.
But luckily we have the very talented Nina Eggens, originally from The Netherlands, in The Malpaso Gang. :) Emma is a great singer but I'm sure she wouldn't mind me saying that she can be a bit introverted - Nina however is a real show(wo)man and is happy to dance around etc while we take our extended guitar solos!
How is your album coming along btw?
It's really taken a back seat, I've had a busy year anyway, new baby boy, moved back to Aberdeen etc. And then I have the band too.
I do enjoy making the recordings but there's nothing quite like playing live with a band of top musicians like these guys. Recording is a different process, it's satisfying once you've done it but that's it really, it's not like you sit listening to yourself all the time. But with the band it's always fresh. And I write most of the band's songs so it's satisfying seeing where ther guys take my songs. :)
-
Thanks, dusty! You all certainly look happy performing together and Nina appears to have a great personality! :D I can see she enjoys jigging around! ;D Love the music too - will you be touring at some stage? If so, if you are in the Leeds area we'll come to see you! :)

Couple of new Dusty Valentino tracks, El Paso:

Great voice. I understand that it is all you, Dusty, singing? :o Wow. Ever thought about recording an album? I also managed to listen to Social Networking Blues for the first time. This is far from only "talented". In my humble opinion.
LE
-
Pretty songs, both new ones. I prefer the almost surf, up beat El Paso, even though I expected a longer guitar solo. As for Candy, I have to listen to it to a better sound system, and not my PC speakers. I think the voice "breaks" at the "homeeee" part. But I had to listen to them right away, so excuse me if I spoke too soon. Bravo!
-
Great voice. I understand that it is all you, Dusty, singing? :o Wow. Ever thought about recording an album?
Aw, thanks LE, "You're very sweet." Yes, it's me singing, although I think the vocals are one of the weakest points. I used to be a good singer but too much smoking and a lack of practise has really knocked my voice.
These tracks will be part of my album, god knows when it will be finished though. :)

Thanks! At first the guitar solo was going to take up the whole of that section but I thought it was too much, so I stuck some organ on it. I was pleased with the guitar tone on the solo though, a real growly, twangy tone. That's my Silvertone 1452L "Hornet" as used by MK on Boom Like That and Mike Henderson on the 2001 tour. The MK Strat also features, playing the tremolo bits that appear in the right speaker. :)
-
Well done, Dusty. Like Candy a lot. Reminds me of Greg Brown's music, dustbowl country :) The organ sound on both tracks is not great though. I'm sure you're not playing a real Hammond, but I would suggest not only playing with fast Leslie speed.
How do you record, by the way?
-
Thumbs up! My favorite so far is "El Paso", you are a bunch of talented musicians! Be sure to book your slot at British Grove Studios in the not so distant future! ;)
-
The organ sound on both tracks is not great though.
Don't worry Jackal, it's not the first time someone has expressed disappointment with my organ. ;)
I'm not a keyboard player at all, but I just wanted to fill out the sound a bit. I thought it sounded OK, but I guess not! It's definitely not a Hammond, it's a crappy old Yamaha keyboard, I stuck it through some processing in an attempt to make it sound a bit better.
I use a little Boss 8 track, a BR-600, SM57 for all mic duties, a Pocket Pod for amp simulation. :)
-
Didn't mean to be nasty or anything, it's just that I think with a Hammond, only the real thing works, or some very good simulators. Maybe if you added a bit of tube amp distortion and slowed it down it would sound better. As for poor organ sounds, Guy has made some strange choices on Mark's records, particularly on KTGC. Cheesy.
The overall sound on your recordings are good though. It's amazing what it is achievable with so little equipment! I've just Line6 TonePort and Ableton much. Good stuff.
-

Hey, Jackal, I like precise criticism - could you elaborate more? Maybe with some examples? I'm no musician at all and like the opportunity to learn something new about the stuff I like to listen to! :) Sorry if this goes OT - didn't mean to!
LE
-
Didn't mean to be nasty or anything,
Not at all, it's very useful. That's why I put the tracks up, so I can improve them. Nobody everybody just going on about how great they are when I know they are flawed.

I know what Jackal means. Some of the electric organ sounds on KTGC are what I would call "authentic", but to some I can see why they would seem cheesy.
But I personally don't find that tone cheesy.
Junkie Doll and Coyote on the other hand...
-
Well, it's all about taste of course, and, as Dusty says, on KTGC, the organ sound is authentic, i.e. fitting for that era, but I still don't like it. Have a listen to the organ on We Can Get Wild and Punish The Monkey. Awful. Very thin sound, and the Leslie speaker rotates with fast speed only.
Here's an example of beautiful Hammond playing, note how he alters the speed:

And of course ... Go to about 6:00.

-
Hm, interesting stuff, never thought about these details! So Guy is a bad organ player? :lol
I think the intro of "Everybody Pays" must please you more then, and that was played by Jim if I remember correctly...
Funnily enough, I like "We Can Get Wild" the most on the whole album, and the organ does its part to it. But as you said, it's all a question of taste.
Back in 2004, when I read (shortly before I was able to listen to Shangri-La myself), that "Everybody Pays" sounded like a Hommage to "Whiter Shade Of Pale", I was thinking, Wow, at least we will have that FAT authentic organ sound - and was rather disappointed by the whole song.... I think it IS a great song, but I don't like it! :) (guitar, Mark's vocal style and so on...)
LE
-
Dusty - As always I'm really impressed with your work and enjoyed these two songs immensely! One of the other songs, "Social Networking Blues", reminded me a bit of "Stand Up Guy"! :) I'm looking forward to the album!

No no, Guy is a fine player, but I'm sometimes puzzled by the choices he makes regarding sounds (the fake horns on Coyote being the worst example ...).
Everybody Pays is indeed a good example of beautiful organ sound.

Thanks Val, and yes, need to hold my hands up to that one! SNB was definitely "inspired" by Stand Up Guy, the intro anyway, then it goes into a Paul Simon type pattern.
I'm sure all songwriters, and MK definitely, do this, you start playing something by somebody else then you change it round and it becomes something new. :)
-
Hi LE! Yes I'm back again. It was a great holiday! I did sneak a few looks at AMIT and Guy's Forum in a wifi hotspot, though! ;D

Yes, I have no problem with that. Composers have been doing it throughout time, including classical ones! ;) MK has said he is like a sponge - he absorbs lots of music and it comes out again sounding something different! :)
-
Yes, trying to copy and imitate great songs and styles is not only acceptable, but also the best way to improve and evolve. Then at a certain point, you find your own style and voice and with a lot of luck break it to the world. I know i have tried to imitate many artists and by now I have managed to sound like MK when he was 6 years old.
But could please someone explain to me how and why Dylan, gets away with it when he rips off whole songs (see Modern times album) and puts his name underneath? I mean MK had to share a co-credit and the fat royalties from Money for nothing, just for the 5 notes of Don't stand so close to me.
-
VGONIS2002 Yes, I find that hard to understand too. I love Dylan's songs, but when I heard "Modern Times" I was more than a bit bewildered that "Rollin' and Tumblin' and also "Beyond the Horizon" were credited to him. OK the words were different, but the tunes were the same. I remember "Beyond the Horizon" as "Red Sails in the Sunset" many moons ago!
-
Glad I am not the only one feeling this way. Thank you for that. I don't know if you remember the "Are you ready for the country" song by Neil Young. The last song of side A in his "Harvest" album. It is Rollin' and tumblin with different lyrics. I wonder where does tradition "loans" stop and ripping off starts. And is it the same for "giants" and dwarfs of music? Any ideas?
-
According to this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rollin'_and_Tumblin'
The author of Rolling and Tumbling is unclear. So basically anyone can claim writing credit for their "arrangement".
But we should perhaps have a discussion about Bird of Paradise...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixV9nHFX9UU
-
man, i always loved this song!
-
Dusty, i know that what you say is that BIA is very similar to this beautiful song. But apart from the dissenting chords and the interplay of guitar and synthesizers (even if the guitar is a Gibson Les Paul) the songs are quite different. Well if BIA came first, I think that Bird of paradise would be more famous, since it would be considered a copy cat. Now nobody remembers. And anyway, Snowy, had this song only to show as a hit, minor mind you, and out of print for almost 15 years. And when in 2001 it was re pressed it was not that easy to find as Dire straits records.
As for the other matter, I have a set of new lyrics for Rollin and tumblin. How about giving them to you to record a brand new song? Well, I say when something comes from tradition you should mention it, respecting both the unknown composer and your audience, that might look for the roots of a song. It has nothing to do with fairness, it is only a simple "hats off" a sign of respect.

I had the pleasure of listening to Dusty's CD on the weekend - highly recommend it; a great overall ambience of Country Blues fun. I really really liked the electric guitar sound - vibrant and cool!
