Title: Best DIGITAL RECORDINGS- (2010-2013-2015)
Post by: Brunno Nunes- (Universo Dire Straits) on January 19, 2017, 04:34:33 PM
Hello all Knopflerians!!!  :wave

Could any specialist make a list of the most interesting shows in the DIGITAL RECORDINGS series? The fundamentals.

As there are many, some very similar, I would like to know (if I do not disturb  :hmm), those who have unusual versions of songs, setlist with rare songs (little played).

Thanks, I'm sure here is the ideal place for this question.

Interesting question!
2010: maybe Frankfurt, but I never to listen to these 2010 recordings to be honest.
2013: Saint Julien really stands out! Also like Stuttgart very much and Newcastle for the great setlist.
2015: US leg seems better. Toronto is really good (except for Sultans) and it got very good sound. Also like Albany a lot.

Well, without no doubt I would recommend Locarno 2010 and Padova 2013. Nothing from 2015 and Nashville from 2005 if that counts.

But I fear you will get 10 different recommendations from 10 people.  :wave

Since we will all have somewhat different opinions, I think it would be helpful to list what was special about specific shows, for example:
2013 St Julien - Excellent show; hot venue.  Band on fire, and AMITers had water fight to cool off.  :wave
2015 Milwaukee (9-30-2015): On Every Street played for first time in 23 years.
etc....

2015 tour: I really liked the last show of the tour (Fort Lauderdale) , good/rare songs and marks playing is quite good (considering the rest of the tour)

2010:
-Paris has a long and breathtaking TR solo, almost on par with 2005. It also has a rarely played ANISLO with Mark screaming instead of singing :) also a DWB in D instead of C. And ohe ohe :)

2013:
-Saint-Julien is outstanding, great energy, great WII, great TR, long SFA, and above all a magnificent saxless Going Home.
-Stuttgart has the greatest version of rarely played DOTDS. With a funny setlist mistake from IanTo which had Mark to tease him :)
-Lubjana has the greatest version of rarely played Yon Two Crows.

2015:
-Manchester has outstanding sound. The synth on HFB can be clearly heard unlike most versions.
-Sion has also great sound, longest TR from the tour, and great SOS with a technical sound problem which made Mark joke about it :)
-Barcelona has a great rarely played BIA with long intro

2010  -  Manchester is my favourite, especially Coyote, which is the best I have heard and also Get Lucky was played beautifully.

         -  Brighton is also very good - Monteleone was played and a great version of Donegan's Gone, which I normally skip, but this has a
great slide guitar intro.  There is no Marbletown, which is probably a plus for those who don't like it.

Great versions of SOS and TR on both of these recordings.

2013     Liverpool - Lovely version of Seattle with a little nod at the end to Ferry Across The Mersey.
Great version of SOS and also TR and an interesting solo on SFA - different to the usual.

Carcassonne - just a wonderful concert in every respect -  beautiful venue and great playing on everything.  Just one
disappointment - there was no Speedway.

2015     Manchester - This is the best of those I have heard, but Newcastle is also good except I find the sound very 'tinny'!   Both have
            excellent versions of KOG.

2010 - Glasgow:  home of the Albion for Border Reiver.  Great and long HFB.  Best Coyote from the tour IMO.  Interesting and great solos on Sultans.

2013 - St. Julien has been cropping up and I would agree. He always plays well there for some reason.

2015 - St. Julien again!  I said he always plays well there!  Probably the best version of Sultans from the tour and the best energy.  Paris 2nd night has interesting solos, especially on TR which I like a lot.  Toronto is a good concert with maybe the best Speedway (cheer when he sings Toronto) and, although I don't have the soundboard, Atlanta has a fine Sultans.  Overall later shows are best both sound wise and musically.

Which is ridiculous. It's not like it's something physical what you can send, need an address for, etc., just a download. They don't need any money?

Paris 2010 is the king. After that one I hardly can listen to the recent tour bootlegs. In fact, after 2015 shows sticks 2010 sounds like a live album.

Indeed. Paris 2010 is special to me, my first MK concert since 1992 (I lost touch after DS) so I am biased, and I know that precise people like Elian critized this concert for some mistakes... But to me it was magical, and the only time I had a 14-minute long TR like it was in 2005 !

Well, he went on a downward spiral after the highs of the BIA tour in '85/'86 IMHO.  Even on the OES tour he never hit the same level of performance, however it doesn't mean the other tours aren't worth listening to.  :)

In the OES tour his guitar skills were the finest ever, but this was somehow spolied by a lack of heart in what he was doing, abuse of Pensa and pedal steel, so I agree that the BIA tour was the highest point in terms of live feeling. There was too much synth on it, though, too much "outdated 80s" feel (even if I like it), and the horrible overdriven to death drums. The LOG tour maybe aged better.
I enjoyed all solo tours but I think TR was best played in 96/01/05. After that, the karaoke mode, and the shorter and slower solos made it less good..But still very enjoyable.

I agree, OES tour was MK.playing at its best but on autopilot, with no heart on it...

Maybe GH tour was a mix between playing at its best or near its best and with heart.

It was an excellent tour but...
-i don't always like the arrangements. Sultans with piano was less good than with sax. BIA although played with the Les Paul (welcome back !) was too dark and slow. MFN was less good than in 2001 with the fab intro. Water of love was...Strange. TR was awesome, but so was it in 2001 and 2005.
-The set list was long, but by nature lacked all the classics than came afterwards (Wii, STP, SAN, HFB, WAM,...)

I'm agreeing with you today Herlock - keep going!!!

Sultans was slowed down by too much pinky-plonk piano; BIA as you say; MFN hasn't really been great since the BIA tour for me; Water of Love I prefer with slide;  TR as you say;  CE sounds terrible with synths instead of pedal steel and solos not as good.

Set, although long, contained too many insignificant film snippets that slowed things down.

The BIA you could say has a certain nostalgic 80s feel, or maybe I'm the only one who can still remember that decade! :lol

agree here with herlock and dmg.
On the OES Tour, my first DS concert 1991, MK played superb but really on autopilot especially in 1992. Look at the Nimes concert.
The 1996 Tour the passion returned. MK was on fire. Very fine solos on Darling pretty and quite a rocky beginning of the concerts with DP, Imelda, The Bug and WOL. Very uptempo.
But also some strange arrangement like on Sultans, BIA and Calling Elvis. All a bit to slow.
Nice for us fans: Long setlists with nearly 3 hours of MK Music. and cool tiny venues.
But until now the STP Tour is my favourite. Still MK on Fire and cool new songs in the set. Love it

Great we agree ! :) I acknowledge that Wembley 85 had probably the finest versions ever of the songs that were played. Even BIA, most people prefer Mandela 88 but I don't - the Les Paul, the never done again rocking ending, and even the 80s synth are just awesome. And even Sultans, most people say "overused keyboards" but I just love it.
TR is the only DS song that was played better in solo days than in DS days IMHO. 81 early versions are charming but immature, 83 versions are emotional and rocking but a bit rough and short, OES versions are cut and too fast, and spolied by sax and pedal steel, 2008+ versions are too mellow, but 96/01/05 ones were just perfect !

Maybe another execption maybe, MFN Montserrat 97 with the super group is even better than 85 versions - Dave for the cut intro, sadly...

The first par of the OES tour IMHO feature Mark at its best. A bit rough, still adjusting, very interesting. Once the "settings" found turning into autopilot on the rest of the tour but even in this mode some part of the show were amazing, especially SOS starting played by four and ending full band.

Agreed! Some of those early dublin recordings with "I think I love you too much" and setting me up are just awesome. I think the LOG tour is my favourite though.

with Solo MK I really enjoyed the 2010 tour, The show I saw (I haven't seen many) he played great and I really liked the setlist. Although I understand he didn't always play that great on that tour.. There's too many songs I like from recent albums now It's hard to go back to the GH tour even though his guitar playing was far better. As mentioned by others some of the arrangements are a bit long/slow, STP tour was pretty cool, Especially when threw in Wag the Dog, But I really miss stuff like HFB and others that came later.... I thought on the last tour some of the versions of "Going Home" were absolutely brilliant, lots of energy and just the perfect end to the show, I wish he'd do that more!

with any tour just catch mark 2nd or 3rd gig in  or in the middle and one at the end then you can have a good over view of playing set list changes , playing songs different ways ,

tobe fair see mark get bashed quiet a lot on here, (his own fans fourm) , were all just blessed he is still playing and we still go and see him play to still a good standard , and yes he is 67 at the end of the day , and people moan about sets , at least he plays the sets well, people moan about last tour but by the end still has changed from the 2013 tour , and high lights for me sultan's back at every show, played very some venues others just well, hill farmers for me on the whole was better than 2013 and 2010 and even 2011, dallas 2015 was the best for me , , yes I would love other songs in the set but just glad to see mark play to a good standard and he is 67 chaps:)))), looking forward to 2018 so much

The early recordings had some interesting setlists but they were all making mistakes and not good musically.  They were all searching for the best arrangements until well into the tour.  The BIA tour, for example hit the ground running straight away.  I think it's telling that no radio or TV broadcasts were made until the Woburn Abbey concert in June '92 and OTN wasn't recorded until May '92.
