Title: Mason & Dixon
Post by: Billy’s Tune on September 02, 2017, 11:23:59 AM
BBC news has an article referencing its 250 years since the Mason Dixon line was drawn.

On bbc1 on 4th September, there is a programme called Inside Out which includes. Section on "mark knopfler's fascination with Mason & Dixon". Probably just old interview snippets but worth a watch.

Video here (thanks to Jeroen van Gils and Henk Pestman)

Wasn't this mentioned at Guy's forum a while ago? It seems there might be new (interview) footage?

Found it!

Julio (who else) asked on July, 1st:

I saw your picture in instagram with that clapperboard. Is “Mason Dixon” what it’s written on it? A clue about the secret project?

Guy answered:

Could be, but it isn't. We just took part in a performance for a short documentary about the Mason Dixon line and the story of the song Sailing to Philadelphia.

It's actually labelled at the bottom of this BBC Page:
Find out about musician Mark Knopfler's fascination with Mason and Dixon on Inside Out on BBC1 at 1930 BST on 4 September.

I wouldn't expect something terribly new to pop up. Probably something about reading a phonebook-sized book, etc. :lol
But it's interesting anyway. I was shocked when "new" documentary "Mark Knopfler on Guitars" got almost 2 million views.

Also, it's great to know that Jeremiah Dixon was born in a town called Cockfield... :lol

I'd have loved to see him get that one into the lyrics!

I am sailing to Philadelphia
A world away from Cockfield

I don't know how to take that who else...

Anyone can ask Guy, anyway.

On the programme credits it lists MK as a "reporter".
He's gone full circle and right back to his journalist roots. So next teacher and lecturer, then cafe racers then DS reunion in say 10 years.....?!

Pretty cool to see Mark the TV reporter.  Also interesting to hear STP performed on the LP, albeit interspersed with chat.

Still waiting for the miracle technology of YouTube to give us this documentary. STP on a Les Paul is something exceptional!

I can't believe it's 2017 and they still can't get rid of this rights situation, like in the stone age. Soundbreaking documentary did the same thing being available in US and Canada only and Mark's bit ended up on youtube. And rightfully so! And I know they already monetised it. So that's the point? Upload it all on YouTube, monetise it and take your money back! It's that simple, but nobody cares.

Half hour show, Mark came on for the last 10 minutes maximum.  Nothing about him personally (hence none of the usual uncomfortable jokes), all about the Mason/Dixon story.  It went to get statements from experts and Mark went to visit someone to look at some old documents.  Song performance only heard in fragments of 5-10s played at BG with Guy, and I think I saw Luke Brighty there too in the background.  Glasses worn throughout!

Personally I found this programme to be a little peculiar.  It was Mark playing investigative reporter, doing voiceover too and then there was nothing about him, but then it wasn't that sort of programme.  It was like he was miscast.  Anyone could've presented that segment and done a better job.  The whole thing was just a little peculiar.  Then to top it off he plays STP with a LP!  Not really the sort of thing I'd want to watch again and the performance was spoiled by being fragmented by talk.

Reminds me of Mark's "The Everly Brothers" documentary voiceover, although he wasn't playing anybody. Let me say for a record, I hate this segmented talk/music game. Producers might think it's kind of dynamic or something, but completely unwatchable. Again, in the time of HD live shows and 360 degree concerts I want something better than just a miscast documentaries. Where's your Live From British Grove, Mark?

That will never happen. He needs the safety net. I remember the whole band miming for the Shangri-La Making-of and also at the KTGC bonus... always mimed.. really how cool it would be to have the recording process documented... loved that little piece at the very beginning of the Hansen short film, those (alternative) Basil rehearsal and the playing of Heart of Oak... then, MK sits there totally uncomfortable in his super duper studio
With a Laptop (Imagine! Oh why-oh-why?) and gives weak sing-and-talk-excerpts... totally unprofessional... really...

And the LP thing, well it's the actual endorsed guitar, it's as easy as that. He needs new glasses. Did I mentioned that?  ;D

Amazing! Thanks for uploading.

Things like that makes me think of Mark going down to Earth more and more each year, which is priceless. And of course he is a great narrator, because he's a natural-born storyteller.

I wish Mark would record an audiobook someday. Preferably an autobiography, but any book will do.

Have to say I really enjoyed it. MK segment was 10-15 minutes, he made a great narrator.
For someone who doesn't open up about his songs this really was something new!

Guitar nerds holy war alert... :lol

The thing is that his "new" Les Paul is very, very close to his old Les Paul, and to do so Gibson must put a huge amount of effort to produce just 1 instrument hence the ridiculous price. Other than that, I highly doubt anybody, including Mark himself, would really hear (and feel) the difference between these two "delightfully vulgar pieces of equipment". Of course, his old guitar being almost 60 years old is different in infinitely many respects, but for a consumer (listener) the difference is next to nothing.

Of course it has to be true, because the guitars of this magnitude (vintage Les Pauls, Fenders, Nationals, etc.) usually travel on a plane with his owner. Like, on a seat! It's easier with private jets, but still.

That's why Schecter replaced his Fenders at 80's, and now his Fender signature replaced his original and old fenders and now these new lp will replace the vintage ones...

He uses his two nationals, the old for Romeo and the new for the rest.

That was my thinking too.  Insurance alone must be astronomical.  Damage a modern one and he can always buy a new one, but damage/lose an original...

Does this mean our tickets will be cheaper on the next tour.  You know, since we're listening to the music being played on cheap copies instead of the real deal? ;)

It's his main guitar for over 20 years and he has played more than 600 gigs with it in these 20 years. Mark would notice the difference in a few seconds.

I have to agree with TheTimeWasWrong here. He has played that guitar A LOT.

I mean this with all respect. I'm not saying all vintage Gibsons are "magical", and I agree it would be hard for anyone to hear differences between reissue/vintage LP's if you're just listening. BUT, playing 50's Les Pauls is a sort of special experience. I only own one (a "cheap" 57 Jr ;) ), and have only played probably 10, so the sample is small. But I would say that they are different in feel than reissues.

BTW, I love the reissues!  :)
