Title: Worldcup 2018
Post by: Eddie Fox on June 18, 2018, 03:55:12 PM
And with Switzerland of course
I have so much stuff going on in my life right now that Mark's album is not even in the top 10 of my list of priorities. I think it has a lot to do with the delay as well, it kind of turned me off a little bit.

Hahaha, I am Swiss, but feel sorry for poor Eddie and his team. Honestly, they would have deserved to win yesterday.

But on to more important things: My to-do list for this year is quite frightening, too, but a new MK album will ALWAYS be a top priority. How could it not? His work is just continuously TOO great to be ignored. I'm super excited about the fall 2018 release date, especially as now every album could well be his last. Let's hope not!

Lol Switzlerland deserved the tie despite the referee's mistakes. In fact, Neymar's hair alone should constitute a reason for losing.

Pottel, I'm reading it over burritos, nachos and a shot of tequila lol arriba!

Apart of following the games of the team I support, Atletico Madrid, I'm totally disconnected about any other football games, is a surprise to me that The Netherlands are not playing the world cup. I didn't know about it.

It is disappointing not to see teams such as The Netherlands and Italy there, especially when there is such an abundance of scrap in there, especially from the Middle East, just making up the numbers.  Nobody can tell me they have better teams.  I was watching Egypt last night and they were playing a 2-3-5 pyramid formation.  ;D

Yes, they are repeating the Eurocup strategy. Bore to death anyone and trust someone (like Cristina) scores.

Spain national team still has that boring as hell way of playing - possession without progression (like a guitar player strumming the very same chord or scale all the way through).
And the older they get, more boring they play. It seems they're only waiting for a goal scored by a knee or butt of Iniesta, Isca or Diega...
And actually this evening, and by some fluke, a group of young lads from Iran didn't beat them. Lucky Spain.
As for the rest, I believe the biggest contenders still are Germany, Portugal and Brazil. So let's see...
Cheers

I'm not sure about Portugal, Ronaldo is 90% of the team. Spain has become boring to watch but they're tough to beat, I wouldn't count them out. Germany is very strong, I don't see them out of the semis. Belgium has a hell of a team and Argentina has Messi, keep an eye on both.

As for Brazil, we probably have the best team but Neymar is a hopeless spoiled brat who thinks the entire country revolves around him and his haircut. If the coach and the other players don't clip his wings we're screwed.
Title: Re: Worldcup 2018
Post by: The Privateer on June 21, 2018, 02:50:24 AM
I suppose Ronaldo has been 90% of the team so far... But, they have been playing only with 2 or 3 players to pass the groups' stage.
Actually they have some standout awesome players, who are still warming, like Gelson, Andre Silva, Quaresma or even Bernardo Silva from Man.City (who've played a complete zero so far). Anyway, keep an eye on that strong team to come.
As for Argentina, I believe is 100% Messi, and if he's not in top shape they will struggle a bit.
As for Germany and Brazil, one way or the other, I believe they will reach quarter/semis at least.

I do agree Spain way of playing is boring and useless. The same than F.C.Barcelona but with the difference they have the best forwards to finish the never ending passing.

Possesion per se doesn't makes sense if you don't do anything with the ball, if you have the 80% of possesion, you should had shot at goal more or less the same or close.

Portugal to me is even more boring, playing the lucky card of Cristina, but if they work for them, like in the Eurocup, good for them.

What I can stand is players that doesn't move. I commented this to Pottel in facebook, I watched the Belgium game as they have many many talented players and it was so shocking to me that, having so much class, when De Bruyne had the ball and was searching for someone to pass and start an attack, nobody moved trying to help, everybody stayed in their positions like waiting that the ball arrived to them instead of moving to free spaces and contribute to the game, helping the team mates etc etc A big waste of talent.

Whan I'm watching a game, I can't stop seeing that empty spaces where nobody is, where nobody goes to offer themselfs and play. That cost usually loose the ball and danger to be scored by the rival.

I have to say that I'm more a football fan than a Spain supporter. I'm only a 100% supporter of Atletico Madrid :)

Even Portugal won one? What's so wrong about that? Portugal has always had great teams and has almost always reached the later stages of both the World Cup and the Euro... But then again, you're spanish, so I naturally understand the arrogance and cockiness.

Lol that was low... but to be honest here I'm just teasing you, I'm with Julio, I don't really care about Brazil. I'm a football lover and care a lot about my team, Botafogo (I support Atletico de Madrid and Liverpool too), but I only brag about our national team to make fun of my foreign friends. In fact, I was rooting for Germany that day, especially for political reasons. Usually I simply don't care though.

But yeah, win something relevant first and then come back to talk with the big fellas  :lol

It's needed a rival for that, lol. Nobody, except a Portuguese would take seriously Portugal as a rival!

It's just another team with good individual players and one big starlet. Honestly, Belgium is far better than Portugal.

Lol not risky at all, brazilians take football quite seriously when it comes to local rivalries and stuff but we are very laid back when it's about countries - unless you're from a certain blue and white country that speaks spanish and has the best player I've ever seen...

But yeah, win something relevant first and then come back to talk with the big fellas
I knew it was risky, but as said, this is just about football and having fun. And when people use the 1-7, just smile and say "5"

sent from my Samsung Galaxy 9+ via tapatalk

Lol not risky at all, brazilians take football quite seriously when it comes to local rivalries and stuff but we are very laid back when it's about countries - unless you're from a certain blue and white country that speaks spanish and has the best player I've ever seen...

Well... after a quick read, if there's no rivalry between Spain and Portugal (in both directions) there's no other rivalry whatsoever.

As for the so-called rivalry between Americans and Canadians, I suppose it's like a blessing for the latter (especially when jokes come from Americans, those funny folks). Suppose the same happens with the Spanish jokes - it's like music for the Portuguese.

The most funny thing is that Spanish doesn't care at all about Portuguese. Actually, most of us never remember that Portugal exists, except when all possible travel destinations are so expensive that our only chance is Portugal, and we try not to tell anyone...

There is a joke that says, three friends are in a pub having fun and talking about their holidays, one went to NY and they spent a lot of time talking about it and having good laughs, the other went to London and they keep talking and laughing. Then, the last one says he went to Portugal. All of them look to each other, on silence, and order another beer and start talking about football.

We have this back and forth rivalry with Argentina too but every time one of them starts it all we need to say is:

Pelé > Maradona
Bundchen > the entire female population of Argentina

And the winner by TKO is...

Offtopic: on the same level, only the DS concerts I was lucky to attend (some centuries ago).

Maradona was a good juggler when he was clean. As a football player I've seen better, including Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Diego played for Barcelona and failed miserably. He was successfull with Napoli but only in the national league. After that he wandered around and never really did anything remarkable. Yes, he won the WC in 1986 almost single-handedly, but so did Garrincha in 1962 and Romario in 1994.

When I mentioned "the best I've ever seen" I meant literally - being at the stadium.
The perspective on TV is a lot different (and sometimes not so real).
Of course, there's a bunch of another great players I could never see live: Garrincha (as you mentioned), Pele, Cruyff, Eusebio, Di Stefano, etc.
As for the current ones and still playing: I saw Messi live, Cristiano I didn't.

A couple of weeks ago I made my predictions for the world cup with a few friends.
And it seems they're not so far from what's going on till now.
Here it goes:

Top favourites: Germany, Portugal and Brazil
Eventual favourites: Croatia, Belgium, Mexico and France
No favourites: Argentina, England and Spain
My personal favourite: Iceland

So let's see what these next matches will tell...

It's amazing when Carrasco wants to play. He spend so many games walking, hiding from the game, that when he wants to play you remember how good he is when he wants...

That's why he's playing in China and not in Atlético anymore. Simeone doesn't forgive players that hide when playing

Belgium is the best team so far, by far. However, in portuguese (at least in Brazil) we say that when it's a traditional team with big achievements under its belt it has a 'heavy shirt' and it makes all the difference when you play big games. I'd say that Brazil, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Spain and France are the big guys. Let's see how Belgium will react when facing one of them down the road.

Of course Italy is out though, I'm sorry dear italian friends  ::)

Yes, what Belgium need is do good when they have to face the big teams.

This is how Spain went from being a candidate to really be capable of win big trophies.

Özil always plays that way - I don't know how Arsenal fans put up with him.  He needs a good kick up the arsenal!  He wasn't the sort of player for a crunch game like today.  He was just strolling about there not interested at all.  Fantastic game for the neutral though.  Sorry LE.

I'm not surprised at all about Spain out of the world cup... I didn't like the squad at all, the system was boring and useless, and the last minute manager clearly doesn't know how to manage a team, the substitutions he made were a laugh, when you see something is not working, the logical thing to do is change and do another thing, but he changed players by others that pkayed in the same position and with the same style... Only when he put the 4th change, he made something different with Rodrigo, and it was the best moment for Spain, but it was too late.

I was clear that Spain would be eliminated sooner or later, but I didn't expect it so soon but next round.

I hope they fire the useless Hierro and hire a real manager, someone with new ideas and a new system and they shake the style.

I agree. Spain were useless, boring and totally bereft of ideas going forward.  Like-for like substitutions, as you said, were a glaringly obvious error and 2 holding midfielders when they needed creativity?  They deserved to go out.

Did I get a glimpse of Putin in the VAR room?  ;)

First, congratulations to all our Belgians amiters, specially our brother Pottel.

Secondly, Belgium did a great game in the first half, and were about to ruin it in the second. If it wasn't because Brazil failed some clear chances to score, Belgium would had been out. It's dangerous just to defend against such a big team, specially if that big team is one who won the world cup five times, or more?

In my opinion, Belgium was great in the first half and lucky in the second. Bad they are gonna face the most serious team in this world cup, France, which is my favourite to win since they beat Argentina.

I  would also wish to compliment Sweden!  :clap   I'm not really a football fan but, naturally, I hope England win the World Cup!

me too, I'm not much into football, but naturally I hope France win !  ;)

I hope Belgium wins tomorrow, so Griezmann, Lucas and Lemar can go on holidays and return fresh to Atlético Madrid as soon as possible.

A new season is coming with champion league final in Atlético Stadium!

For you.

The only fact that Japan was winning 2-0 almost all the game doesn't speak well about Belgium. Happily they managed to recover. They also just defended against Brazil the second half and were in very real danger of loose, luckily to Belgium, Brazilian strikers failed all their very clear chances...

Belgium is very good but very inconsistent in the attack-defence balance. France is more serious as a team in that, despite the fact Argentina almost equalise at the very last second...

Let's see if Belgium manages to do a complete good game tonight.

Great game, once France substituted all their best players and thought they had the game wrapped up.  However, only Argentina wanted to play football.  Sorry but I'm not a fan of France's style at all.  They'll probably beat England in the final though.

England should have finished them off in the first half while they had the chance - Croatia were rank rotten.  However they let them into the game in the 2nd half and they showed how they can really play and bossed the midfield. England simply weren't good enough when Croatia turned it on.

Watching the game yesterday I was thinking how bizarre would be this England team reaches the final having a low quality team in comparison with others that they had, having people like Shearer, Sheringam, Gascoigne, Beckham etc in mind...

This England was no way better than many others that failed, but in general this world cup has been very low on quality in general.

This team shows that that time of super stars is over and the team spirit decides. Germany already showed that in 2014. Would have been too funny England winning the World Cup in that year Germany went out so early.

Totally disagree, this has been a very interesting cup, and yes, good to have this single star teams fail. Too bad the extremely boring style of France has resulted in their final achievement

I was thinking the same (except that Beckham was never world class) and what LE said about team spirit too.  Of course, a good draw got them through but luck helps in cup competitions all the time whether it's a good draw, refereeing decision or an injury.  This can help or hinder a team in cup competitions every time so a lot of luck is involved.  This might have been England's best chance and also for Belgium's so-called "golden generation" who will be past it in 2022.

But not for the European championship in two years, also, only Belgian defence needs partial replacing till '22, not our attack

The best team and the team with the best in this world cup are two very different teams.

France is the team who played better as a team, but Belgium was the team with the best players.

Croatia is the one with more luck in the easier part of the competition. England could had qualified as well.

Let's talk about 1982  :-[ :'(

Brazil had the best team I've seen but Italy still beat us. Falcão, Sócrates, Cerezo, Zico, Júnior, Oscar, Éder, Leandro... a true dream team. Our only weak spot was Serginho. Careca, Reinaldo and Dinamite were all either injured or recovering so we were left with that bonehead to lead our attack. In the end Italy played the match of their lives and deserved the victory but it still hurts.
