Today on FB I saw a post from a friend of mine who is working at "Matt's guitar shop" with some reals gems including David's black strat, featuring on Sultans
https://www.facebook.com/arnaud.bascunana/posts/10217046475296588?__xts__[0]=68.ARAh2GDg9Uc5R4u1fmD4LnzTt6w_rtWGfMkLsAzRfY04IPoM2Kuv1f1C_nOzM09qxokJbpxf0RCa7XiR0M3p98yh_MPJCdSCxKzZ76FzXY92nZOskpNAyG8XT8iFArvM8VK4GktZ_kwVKGhAerDQSN2KL5QNQP4DtAstfDPS4WjSWW7n8aDFw8o&__tn__=-R
I asked David and he said that he had to sell it to pay for his next album...
As you maybe remember, Ingo told once that he is 98% sure taht all 3 guitars parts on Sultans (two rhythms on each channel + lead on center) are played by Mark, because his typical fingerstyle is recognisable on both rhyhm parts.
So it would mean that David doesn't appear on Sultans studio version. I didn't want to ask him this, because I didn't want to upset him.
I just posted this comment on my friend's post, and he answered that accoding to David, Mark used this guitar
So it would mean that indeed Mark plays all guitar parts, and one with David's guitar

Doesn't it sound sad. .. Mark literally drowning in money, his brother who was with him in the band has to sell a guitar to get an album recorded...
Mark really should take care that all three of the original members who were the vehicle for HIS dreams never should have to care about money...

fully agree. I found it sad too.
In april this year, David was clearly ready to make peace
It's heartbreaking that Mark wasn't

Do we really know all the details? Do we know everything about MK / DK relations? I do not think so.
-
Of course we do not, and I know that my last post sounds pretty naive or romantic, but at a certain point my understanding ends. If I was listed among the richest Musicians of the UK I would make sure that my family would take part of it. But that's romantic again.
He could at least invite him in his super duper studio for free as long as it takes.

agree on all counts

I wondered for a long time whether to write it but someone on the forum wrote about it ... If we talk about family, I can not understand why David talked about Mark at concerts ???
-
I tend to think that everybody lives how they want. It's David's "fault" so to speak that he can't make millions of dollars, and certainly Mark isn't the guy who needs to fix that. I put "fault" in quotes, because, c'mon, an average person would sell something bigger than just a guitar to make the record.

So this guitar is a real piece of history?

No. Mark is!

Yes, if a collector gets its hands on it, a great piece!

and you have got the ragpicker's dream!

Man, I love findings like that. When 99% of people would imagine Sultans being recorded on the iconic red Stratocaster, this thing comes along and like, "could you imagine Sultans was played on a black Stratocaster?". I guess throughout Mark's career there's tons of little surprising things like that.

That's what I meant with piece of history.

None of us have any idea why they aren't speaking.
Not a shame if DK is a terrible person, regardless of MK's wealth.
No idea if he is or isn't, but unfair to suggest MK should be financially supporting him when we really have no clue what has gone on.

well as I understand, this guitar was used for rhtyhm
and the lead was played (99,99% sure according to Ingo) on Mark's 61
but indeed, at this time (april 78) the 61 was still in natural wood finish ! so yes, Sulatns has been recorded on a non-red strat !
while the red strat has become the iconic guitar for dire straits sound, and sultans sound !
pretty funny isn't it ?
