I can't recall the last time the official sources came in first place. If it's fake it's a perfect bootleg cover so nothing goes to waste.  ;D

Down the road wherever ...

Worst album title so far since 1978. The opposite of original or inspired. Could be Eagles, Springsteen, Lynyrd Skynyrd stuff ... really, Cullercoats would have been so much more "Mark"..

I would bet MK or Kitty took the picture.   Maybe there is a nice story to it. I like the fresh colours and the font. Thanks for the find.
I have no idea how you guys are doing it.

I really don't. Most uninspired album title ever?
Artwork is very fresh and nice though.

I also like the fact that there will be a deluxe edition.
18,99 € was the same price with Tracker and it had almost 80 minutes of music.

I hate it but I have to agree. I know people will throw rotten tomatoes at us, after all so much waiting and stuff. But how generic is all that. The word "generic" is the word that comes to mind after seeng this. As generic as all these obituaries "written by Mark".

But having said that all, Mark seems to design the albums himself nowadays. And being a genius songwriter doesn't mean being a genius designer, so that's fair I guess. Sorry to all the people who can't stand a point of view that's not all praise.

I can explain my problem with album covers like this. You see, I'm not a songwriter and I can't write a song like Mark.
But I'm not a designer either, but I can take a random picture and slap a title over it in 5 minutes. That's it, cool, huh?

I know I'm asking for too much, but for an album that again and again will stay in you discography for an eternity...
I would put out something more substantial. And that's all. I'm not a hater, just want some more design effort.

Looks like we are up and running! Let the fun, games, opinions, theories, and taradiddle and nimiety of words commence! The Doc can't deny this surely, but equally sure he is not going to say anything about tracks. how composed, meanings, instruments until the record is out in the ether!

I don't know what to say... Just wake up early on Sunday (being a parent...) and I'm between incredulity and surprise...

Looking for official confirmation.

In the meantime, I always liked that kind of pictures, in fact I made one in Tenerife like that years ago. It's not very original but is nice and again using a similar font than in Ragpickers and Tracker, that I kind of like.

The title... Wherever I go - Down the road wherever... A connection?

Let's see what comes from official sources.

Glad we finally have something!
I do think the art and font is really uninspired.. It almost looks like something that was made via a mobile app. Maybe they will polish it up like they did when Tracker was first announced.

All that aside, it's the music that matters of course, can't wait! Maybe when they will officially announce it, we will get a new single?

The cover... Could it be a part of the road between his country house in the New Forest and London, and the title being related with the travels from one place to the other and also being in the road wherever when on tour?

I recall MK telling that when on tour by bus with Dylan he wrote some songs, one of them being "silver eagle"...

The album cover could indeed be a picture that Mark or Kitty took. Looking at the mountains and sky it looks no polarizing and/or grey filter was used.

The album title feels a bit unnatural to me. English isn't my native language, but 'Down the road to wherever' or 'Down the road wherever ...' makes more sense to me.

Three lps is maybe a special edition in LP as well?

If the special edition has some bonus tracks, maybe the third LP has that bonus tracks too

On Vinyl there is less space. So maybe you need 3 LPs for what fits on the 2CDs of the special edition?

Look at the price : 50 bucks for the 2 lps, 112 (ouch!) for the 3 lps edition, I guess there are more than only one extra lp to justify that difference.

If I remember correctly, the box sets have previously been available exclusively either from Mark’s website or from the Universal store initially, and then found their way onto the usual retailers such as Amazon later.

Funnily enough, it was on this day in 2014 that Tracker was announced!

99.9 percent sure it's from the US.

I'd say it somewhere in Nevada, US. I'm pretty sure his Markness will tell in EPK about this road, a great story like The Crossroads.

I don't think it is such an intelligent act to immediately post any info found concerning a new album or a bootleg on Guy's forum and bombard him with questions.
No wonder they can react so quickly and have everything removed.

Would be interesting to know if any attempt was made on the moderators to remove the info from this site, too, like the titles for the Local Hero Musical.

I don't think it is such an intelligent act to immediately post any info found concerning a new album or a bootleg on Guy's forum and bombard him with questions.
No wonder they can react so quickly and have everything removed.

It will also force them to release the information as long as the information is out even they remove it.

Looks like Bravado is part of the Universal group so the leak comes from the record company itself, LOL

i think official news will follow in the next 24 hours. Hope it will contains some info about the songs on the album...

Instead of now releasing some official news it looks like Bravado was asked to remove theirs...
Stone age promotion work.

Looooooooooooooooooooooooooool, that was the most hilarious thing for this weekend. Tssssss, they don't know we know song titles already! :lol

Did someone search in iswc-net for the title of the album? Maybe it gives us a iswc number and the rest of songs are there as well...

Anyway, the way everything goes with the release of the new album don’t give much hope on how they are going to release the tourdates.

Best thing is that with the tour dates, the record company has nothing to do with them.

Worst thing is that with tour dates, multiple promoters are involved.

So yes, tour dates announcement are going to be the usual mess

Sure, it's a cool song, but his (singing) voice has changed since then, as has the production style. It wouldn't fit. Or did you mean that they would re-record it? Either way seems unlikely given that "they always look forward" (such a cliché).

I'd say when he used paintings (DS debut, Crimson) it was awesome, let alone a genius photo of Elliott Erwitt on the Ragpicker's. I even like Sailing To Philadelphia, even though I believe it was literally a Shutterstock photo. But at least you had that wordplay with a plane that sails.

You don't have a ship on Sailing To Philadelphia, right? So when I see a plain road under an album title with "road" in it be like — :disbelief :disbelief :disbelief

Might as well name an album... "Long Highway" instead :lol

Talking about Camerado, I’ll never understand why that masterpiece was cut out.
Title: Re: New Album - Down The Road Wherever

I find the thought of reusing an old song rather preposterous, however good or timeless the song may be or how well it matches the new cover photo. It's not like the man is not productive enough to come up with new ones, right? Besides, the title of the album has the word "road" in it.

I'm curious though to see whether there's a song on the album with that title, or if it's just a phrase from one of the songs, or whether it's just a description, as was the case with the Tracker album. It will also be interesting to see whether the cover art is an indicator of the music, or if it's purely a general metaphor. Personally, I'd love to hear some twangy Americana rock from the man, preferably with only small doses of Celtic instrumentation this time round.

Yes. Then again it's a mystery why so many B-sides are better than many songs that made it to the records.

Because of language barriers and the fact that we are using a written medium, it's not always easy to pick up the intended meaning.

Only meant it would be great if he does, coz I absolutely love the song, not that I want him to, new songs are priority. Best case, he actually plays it live, along with those other amazing b-sides

No, she's not.

A photography like the one in "tracker" cover doesn't need a photographer, nor the one for the new record, actually, I've taken similar photographies in Tenerife and I have a friend who is not a photographer that took many pictures like the one in the cover in a travel along the US west coast, some of them even better than the used in the new MK record cover...

Looks like a trendy thing to do the cover pictures from whatever. I still recall this Clapton cover, that is a shelfie made with his Iphone...

Thanks for the information. I didn‘t know that she is also a photographer.

As a writer and former actress, she no doubt has an eye for imagery and compostion, and with today's advanced camera technology, all you have to do is to push one button to get a correctly exposed photo. I don't think the Tracker photo is particularly special, though. Looks like a Microsoft Windows background.

And that Eric Clapton cover is just horrid.

I don't know what your search criteria were, but if you search for "highway straight nevada", you get a lot of hits similar to the cover photo.

I just saved the cover picture and uploaded it to google images...

The truth is that to take a picture like that you only need a good cammera and the idea of composition you want in the picture, and that's all. A friend of mine took lots of similar pictures in his way to Nevada some years ago that are even better than that one.

However, despite not being original, I LIKE IT. It kind of suggest some americana sound... I can't help listening "Sands of nevada" in my head.

I agree. Interesting how one make associations. Imagine if this was the cover photo:

yes americana sounds :P

coincidentally, this year is the 50th anniverasry of The Band's 1st album "music from big pink"

The Band is often credited as being the americana style foundator

I wrote an article about it, but sorry, it's in french

I like the album cover and I'm looking forward to seeing the overall graphics.

For what it's worth, I googled "worst album covers" and it didn't turn out pretty.  :lol

Do we have a Van Morrison expert here?
Was Mark involved in Van's 2002-released title track "Down The Road"?:

https://pesni.club/text/van-morrison-mark-knopfler-down-the-road-i-go

Ok, found an explanation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_the_Road_(Van_Morrison_album):
The title track was originally entitled "Down the Road I Go" and was first recorded in 1981 with guitarist Mark Knopfler.[3] The song was then re-recorded with Linda Gail Lewis in November 2000 with additional lyrics.

For a few seconds I dreamt MK would duet again with Van on the new album...

When you serach for publisher "Will d side ltm" this morning there were 72 songs, now 82. ten new entries:

- BACK ON THE DANCE FLOOR
- DON'T SUCK ME IN
- DROVER´S ROAD
- EVERY HEART IN THE ROOM
- FLOATING AWAY
- GOOD ON YOU SOON
- HEAVY UP
- JUST A BOY AWAY FROM HOME (co-credited with Oscar Hammersten II and Richard Rodgers... the ones from the Tunnel of love intro)
- MATCHSTICK MAN
- MY BACON ROLL
- NOBODY DOES THAT
- NOBODY'S CHILD
- ONE SONG AT A TIME
- PALE IMITATION
- REAR VIEW MIRROR
- SKY AND WATER
- SLOW LEARNER
- TOWN
- TRAPPER MAN
- WHEN YOU LEAVE

There are 20 new entries, the songs from Bap Kennedy had dissapeared from this search, thats why it went from 72 to 82.

Some of them have ISWC number and are titles we already knew and some doesn't have ISWC number so some must be unreleased songs maybe used for this record, and some must be totally new songs...

A friend of mine saw this in an italian forum:

Ecco la track list della versione standard. Della versione deluxe ancora non ne so niente. Come potete notare, i titoli sono gli stessi che Mark aveva depositato a tutela del copyright, qualche settimana fa.

ONE SONG AT A TIME
MATCHSTICK MAN
SLOW LEARNER
BACK ON THE DANCEFLOOR
FLOATING AWAY
GOOD ON YOU SON
NOBODY'S CHILD
JUST A BOY
MOVING UP
MY BACON ROLL
NOBODY DOES THAT
DROVERS' ROAD
TRAPPER MAN

13 tracks plus other 7 tracks all of them just registered in ASCAP, the bonus tracks?

And on the Making Movies album, the phrase "making movies" is found in Skateaway, which is kind of funny given that he also penned the song Making Movies.

But I think it's very likely that "Drive down the road wherever" could be from within a song, not a songtitle itself.

Interesting though that a "tracker" is someone who follows a trail of sorts, and supposedly is aiming for something, whereas "driving down the road wherever" suggests roaming and aimlessness.

Most of you probably disagree, but I actually like shorter albums, like LP length, around 45 minutes. Longer than that, and I feel the album loses focus. And even with great songwriters like Mark, it's very rare it's possible to have 60-70 minutes of killer tracks.

So I'm hoping for 9-10 great songs!

I don't think it is such an intelligent act to immediately post any info found concerning a new album or a bootleg on Guy's forum and bombard him with questions.
No wonder they can react so quickly and have everything removed.

Same today.
Link to download the new single before it was supposed to be available immediately posted to Guy.  :smack :smack :smack
Again management doesn't have to search the leak and can easily and immediately have it removed.

Maybe we can establish that we don’t post these things directly to GF? That’s like calling PCM: “You’ve leaked a song”

This thing with the cover, title and release date appears in a online shop which is part of universal company, and hours later is gone.

The single appears in an online website and put on sale. Who knows if it's part of universal group but the single must come from somewhere. Now it's gone.

So... Are the people from Universal doing mistakes or it's just a kind of viral promotion we are not getting? Maybe they are doing on purpose, putting the information online and then delete it?

Do you think they can be that good or just people messing with things?

Glad to see a lot of fans like it.

Paul Crockford by the way said on Instagram that the 2nd of November is not the release date. What other dates have we found other than the 2nd?

7digital will have it available three weeks before anyway so...
16th of november was also named.

Take a good sit. Next thing would be a site with samples of all tracks that will disappear hours after.

I still have hopes that the record is officially announced before it gets released...

But how many songs do we have now? 21?

13+8?

21 titles...
Almost the same amount of Privateering which was a double album

Maybe there are 5 bonus songs in the special edition and other 3 in the delux box...

Maybe 8 exclusive tracks for the German market ? Still mad about the Hod Dog thing ;-)

These things are surely mistakes. If they wanted to create a viral qave with this thinks would have been there longer. Im guessing the the release date og 7 september is casuing confusion. Most likely the release is push back due to promotional reasons (I'm guessing they are working to get all tour dates confirmed with venues - so the tour can be announed at the same time as the record and the single.)

Although MK used a similar imagery to the album cover for his video backdrop, "Playtime Deluxe" seems not to be among the tracks for the upcoming release, which makes MK's gift for Bill Wyman's birthday a one-off and kind of special.

Mixed feelings. It was a good shuffle and should've done well on record. However it had resulted in yet another credit for another band/artist.  :)

If Good On You Son is any indication of what the rest of the album will sound like (more electronic in feel), could this be Mark's version of Eric Clapton's Pilgrim? Just a thought.

I don't know if that's really true - KTGC was folky and Privateering had some blues but mostly the solo albums have been an interchangeable hodge podge of rock/blues/country/Americana.

Fine with me but if you played someone Shangr-La and slipped in a track from Tracker I don't believe they would notice.

What I don't like about the cover is that it's too clichéd.

The title itself is still rather okay, I think - the word "wherever" lifts it above the mere "down the road" cliché.

The picture, though beautiful, is a total stock-photo cliché.

But the worst, IMHO, is the font. Not that it's ugly, but it's about as clichéd as it gets (as it was on The Ragpicker's Dream). Why use a fake typewriter font? We know for a fact that Mark is NOT writing his songs on a typewriter, but on a MacBook.

My guess is that they briefed the designer with the idea and asked him to "suggest a couple of pics and fonts."

It's kind of sad that Mark's (and Dire Straits') covers never nearly lived up to the music (especially as there's no lack of fantastic artists around), but I've become used to it over time and didn't expect much else.

Still very exciting to see it, though. Not for what it is, but for what it announces. And I do love the song titles.

This is actually the same font as Privateering cover.

Not a bad cover, but everybody, including my 13 old son, can make such a cover in less than one hour.
Just search for "road" in google image and you have hundreds of DTRW-like covers ...

Sorry to be nitpicking, but no, it isn't the Privateering font. Much closer to The Ragpicker's Dream. It has these little "typewriter" deficiencies – things that would happen if you hit a letter harder or softer on a typewriter - but of course it's not really done with a typewriter, it's a digital fake. IF they were going for a retro feel, they could at least have used a real typewriter. That, however, might not have been a very good idea, either, because the music of the album won't be retro, as far as we can tell by now.

The whole cover is pretty well executed;, but the ideas for the picture and font look like something a non-designer would come up with, someone who's not visually creative. Which probably was the case.

Does it really matter about the font or the picture for that matter?  The overall impression is what counts and personally I don't have any issue with it.  It's not inspiring by any means but none of his covers have been so what's new?  I'm sure I speak for all when I say we're more interested in the content.  A fantastic cover would be great but it was never going to happen.

Commercial means more delay on the intros of the songs :lol And less folk, I guess.

By the way, Beryl was a tribute (please excuse the term) to Dire Straits days.
My bet is that this song is a tribute to MK's early solo career. It surely is :think

UPD: By this song I mean the new "single" which "came out" lately.

I'm holding out for the official announcement to hear the single, but I must admit I'm a little disappointed with the cover art, Seems very generic and just a bit standard for an MK album, I've always really enjoyed lots of the MK cover art, Still i'm Very excited to hear ithe tunes! Seems like most people are enjoying the single which is great!

What to expect about the announcement at 12.00 P.M (I guess UK time...)?

We know the cover, the title, the release date (12nd of november in the end), the 13 songs that will be in the standard edition and the new single...

So... what could be new?

- More details about different editions with their contents
- The tour dates...

... but judging how they usually do these things, I expect a "further details will be revealed soon". Like giving us time to find it out by ourselves, like usual  ;D

Past experiences taught me not to expect too much than I won't be dissappointed.
Outside of "get-a-life-forums" this will be actual news for people.
And the announcement on mk.com will not be that important. What is really important and what will unfold an effect is that from today the whole commercial carrousel is allowed to finally publish the news that they have for quite some time on all of their marketing channels.

For us the news today would be the tour announcement and further details on a possible super deluxe box.

The album title 'down the road wherever' is a line from the track 'one a song at a time'. Release mid november, that must be 16 november then.

Mark Knopfler will release his ninth solo studio album on 16 November 2018 on his own British Grove label via Universal/Virgin EMI. Entitled ‘Down The Road Wherever’ it features 14 unhurriedly elegant new Knopfler songs inspired by a wide range of subjects, including his early days in Deptford with Dire Straits, a stray football fan lost in a strange town, the compulsion of a musician hitching home through the snow, and a man out of time in his local greasy spoon. Mark has a poet’s eye for telling details that infuse his songs with his unique psychogeography – ‘where the Delta meets the Tyne’ as he describes it – and his warm Geordie vocal tone and his deft, richly melodic guitar playing are as breathtaking and thrilling as ever.

Knopfler says: “ 'Down The Road Wherever' is a line from 'One Song At A Time.' I remember my pal Chet Atkins once saying that he picked his way out of poverty one song at a time, and it just stuck in my mind. You get to an age where you’ve written quite a few songs. But 'Down The Road Wherever' seems to be appropriate for me just because it's what I've always done. I've always tried to make a record and also to keep my own geography happening in the songs.”

Knopfler has assembled the same group of top flight musicians he has worked with for the last few years (with one or two new faces).  As is his way he encourages them to put their own stamp on the material but never interfering in the essence of the song.

“I think the business of making a record, from having written a song and then bringing it to musicians, it can be quite a bendy route.  It’s not just motorways all the way….and you can end up in the occasional cul-de-sac, then you have to do a 16 point turn to try to get your truck back out on the main road as unobtrusively as you can.  That’s part of the fun of it.”

‘Down The Road Wherever’ has been produced by Knopfler and Guy Fletcher and was recorded at British Grove Studios in London. The band features Mark Knopfler on guitars, Jim Cox and Guy Fletcher on keyboards, Nigel Hitchcock on saxophone and Tom Walsh on trumpet, John McCusker on fiddle, Mike McGoldrick on whistle and flute, Glenn Worf on bass, Ian ‘Ianto’ Thomas on drums and Danny Cummings on percussion. Richard Bennett and Robbie McIntosh also feature on guitar and Trevor Mires on trombone.  Imelda May, Kris Drever, Lance Ellington,  Beverley Skeete and Katie Kissoon add backing vocals.  All songs are written by Mark Knopfler apart from ‘Just A Boy Away From Home’ where he shares the credits with Rodgers and Hammerstein, as the song uses a piece of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ to spin its tale of a lone Liverpool fan wandering the empty streets of Newcastle after midnight.

Mark Knopfler has released eight solo albums as well as recording ‘Neck And Neck’ with guitar great Chet Atkins, and collaborated with Emmylou Harris on ‘All The Roadrunning’.  He has created soundtracks for ‘Local Hero’ and  ‘The Princess Bride’ and ‘Altamira’. In addition to producing his own records Knopfler has also produced albums for Bob Dylan and Randy Newman amongst others. Knopfler was made an OBE in 1999 and was given the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ivor Novellos in 2012.

‘Down The Road Wherever’ will be available on digital DL, CD, double vinyl (with one bonus track), deluxe CD with two bonus tracks, and a lavish box set that will include the album on both vinyl and deluxe CD and an additional 12”vinyl EP with 4 bonus tracks, a 12” print of the artwork and a 12” guitar tablature of a selected song.

Beautiful guitar, but I've got to get used to seeing Mark completely bald... (but that's just me probably)

He looks like a character from Breaking Bad.

This is cool: "Imelda May, Kris Drever, Lance Ellington,  Beverley Skeete and Katie Kissoon add backing vocals."

I always wanted to hear some MK songs with female BGV, but Guy has said they feel MK's music doesn't work well with female voices. I think they are wrong.

lol yes, they didn't put all the 14 songs of the cd on the 2 lps, only 13, so Drovers road is on the extra LP, but not really an extra song

so 14 or 16 or 19 songs, but so 2 songs are missing from the 21 list

maybe 1 extra from mediamkt germany and 1 from mediamkt mozambico

Cool, thank you!!

So, if you buy the Deluxe Box set, you will have all songs, right? In this case, it seems they have learned.

The two missing songs very well could be Retailer's bonus from amazon, saturn, iTunes or whatever. That is something we have to live with.

But in the Deluxe Box Set there are all songs. And that is nice. Isn't it?

‘Down The Road Wherever’ will be available on digital DL, CD, double vinyl (with one bonus track), deluxe CD with two bonus tracks, and a lavish box set that will include the album on both vinyl and deluxe CD and an additional 12”vinyl EP with 4 bonus tracks, a 12” print of the artwork and a 12” guitar tablature of a selected song.

and are sold for 30-40 euros. In this case you pay 85 euros and don't have songs #17 18 19 on cd, only vinyl + download, and maybe

I don't get it. Can someone please explain this.

Will the Box guarantee all songs on either CD or Download?

I'm not interested in the vinyls.

I would think it’s a near certainty that the whole thing will be available in FLAC at 192/24 or at least 96/24.

The briefly available 7digital download had 2 options: 320kb/s MP3 or 44.1khz/16bit (CD-grade).
You know my opinion, I think that anything above CD-grade is perfectly useless... let's not start another war, but it seems to me that lossless CD-grade will be available.

I'm confused now. :hmm

We listed the standard as 14 songs. According to the official site it has 13 songs. Drovers road isn't on it.
The Deluxe has 16 songs (Drovers Road, Every Heart in the Room, Rear View Mirror are bonus)
When you order the box, you don't get the songs 'Rear view mirror' and 'Every heart in the room' on LP, but they are included in the Deluxe cd.

Oh well... the previous sites were probably wrong, it seemed to be pretty strange that the cd had 14 but the 2lps only 13

13 for the standard cd is probably correct as the official site says
Title: Re: New Album - Down The Road Wherever

so it's
13 standard cd or standard 2lp
16 deluxe cd
19 box (13 on the 2lps + 3 extra on the deluxe cd (which has 16 songs) + 3 extra on extra lp or download but no cd... quite a confusionary box)

But drover's road is indeed on deluxe CD AND on the bonus LP

That's the stuff I wanted to hear!  The first part of this we can discard;  it is there so that newer fans joining from the last few years will buy into this one.  After the comma is the important bit and it is this that makes me look forward to this album more than any for a long time.

Ive just gone through 2LP, 12” and deluxe cd and in total count 19 songs.

trapper man
back on the dance floor
nobody’s child
just a boy away from home
when you leave
good on you son
my bacon roll
nobody does that
drovers road
one song at a time
floating away
slow learner
heavy up
every heart in the room
rear view mirror
matchstick man
don’t suck me in
sky and water
pale imitation

extra LP + also download for those last 3, #17 18 19, so no problem,
but it's a very nonsense box, some extra are only on the deluxe cd, some other extra only on vinyl/download, only MK management/label can create this kind of chaos

Obviously vg to get official news.
Unfortunately there will be delays for people in Europe as they are shipping from Canada and it wouldn't surprise me if some don't get their orders this year.
I say this as my orders from amazon.ca have taken 6-8 weeks to arrive.
They should indicate whether the live show will be flac or mp3.

from Canada!
Blame......:)
Excuse, Mkcom want only 20 euro for delivery, is the Virgin store expensive
You can order the boxset in the Netherlands.

That should mean they arrive much quicker.

The way I see it is that there isn't any other downloads other than the standard and deluxe cd. The code might be for the deluxe.

I might be wrong but I wouldn't be surprised if the bonus tracks were vinyl only.

As a fellow baldy I'm amazed MK managed to pretend he had hair for as long as he did. There was precious little left even in 77.

Of course DK has a lovely full head of hair - the real reason MK has disowned him no doubt.

It says that the digital box is for all the songs, and as long it's in the box I understand that is all the songs in the box, including the three songs in the extra vinyl.

In the past we just had to be members of MK.com to get preferential booking for concerts, whether or not we bought the album.  Is this still as before, I wonder?   I'm confused!   :hmm   Surely we don't have to buy an album from either MK.com or Virgin to get pre-booking.

Sorted!    Sent an email to MarkKnopfler.com and was assured all will be as usual!    :)

Which means that registered members can buy exclusively tickets, without buying The Deluxe Box from Mk.com ?!

I just received a promo from universal Spain with this piece of lyrics

And I’ll be out of this place
And down the road wherever
There but for the grace, etcetera
I’ll see you later somewhere down the line
I’ll be picking my way out of here
One song at a time

So I risk a prediction that this song, being about Chet Atkins, is the one "about a musician hitchhiking in a snowstorm". Somewhat touching that the title track (if you like to call it so) is about Chet.

I thought the musician in a snowstorm is Mark himself. I recall that story somewhere. It happened in the beginning days of DS if i recall well. I thought he talked about it in a Tracker interview.

I might preorder it and since I’m in Canada I might get lucky and get it in shorter time, will see.

From markknopfler.com:

Down The Road Wherever, Mark Knopfler's ninth solo studio album, is released on November 16, 2018. The album was created at Knopfler's own West London recording studio, British Grove Studios. The legendary artist has worked with long-time producer collaborator Guy Fletcher on the follow-up to his 2015 album Tracker.

The album stays true to the folk and roots-inflected ambience of his solo material, but introduces new elements of jazz, funk and even a hint of the rockier leanings of earlier days. (Emphasis mine.)

What did Guy Fletcher say? "Slight diversion"? So, we're looking at more of the same with some new elements. I will temper my expectations, then.

It's weird that "Drover's road" if it's only in the deluxe cd it goes in the middle of the tracklist and "Matchstick man" remains as the last...

If that's true, they can announce the COMPLETE tour first, and start with the pre-sale after the album is released. The action is active until 16 november. It makes no sense if the presale starts before 16 nov.

They already announced presales the same morning with some Tracker concerts ...

My guess is that they will announce on friday 16th november the tour dates and start the presale on Tuesday (they usually do it on tuesday I don't know why..) 20th november...

I see. I was asking because the bol.com (dutch webshop) specifically says that if you pre-order, you'll get "access to the the ticket pre-sale of the Mark Knopfler Benelux tour", implying that you might not be able to book a tour outside the Benelux, would you hypothetically want to.

The virgin/emi/universal UK also says that if you pre-order with them you have presale codes for the UK and Ireland tour...

When the venues are seated, sometimes they have seats compromised for different presales in different sites...

Guess they like to create mess... If you don't mind pre-ordering at bol.com, try it, maybe you have extra chances, but it's not sure. It might be just a commercial hook.

What I don’t understand is why in the super deluxe box set you get the abum in card board format. :/

Card board would be pretty fragile. I remember getting the card board for the bonus tracks of Tracker, that i can live with. But I want a solid casing for the album CD.

Just for the sake of it, I did an mp3 of this riff so you can hear it.
Nothing extraordinary and you can't get much out of 1 title page.

This is so cool!  ;D  Thank you Quizzi.
Now alone for this 16 sec of yours it will be interesting to listen to the song and how it works.

Thanks! No hands required though, just some basic programming ;D

The song seems really groovy, because this riff is a bass riff according to the sheet music.

So at least two groovy songs! The title is giving a certain direction anyway. Very interested in this one.

I was thinking about Tracker and if we had been given Hot Dog as first track and maybe after that Oklahoma Ponies... our expectations would have been totally other than what Tracker really was in the end. I guess Down The Road Wherever will be a calm and silent album the same as ususal. Doesn't matter as long as if it's good material and you prevent yourself  from falling asleep while listening!  ;D

I have a strange feeling though. To me it seems like a good idea to put "guitaristic" song as a sheet music in the box, like they did with "Get Lucky". This is the song you can play on your own, just 1 guitar, straightforward and cool, very strong song indeed. But here what we have is a transposed bass riff, some electric guitar lines and straight up rhythm guitar. Seems kind of strange to me. Would have much more sense to put the song like "Get Lucky" in the box, but we will see. Maybe it gets very guitaristic later.

I think I can bring Hot Dog and My Bacon Roll on the desert island and listen to them on repeat :lol

Per Musicvaultz.com , if you order the Delux box set,  you’ll get a code to download all the tracks, so the vinyl tracks will be available to download ? Is it the same as a digital card ?

It caught my attention the very little we are talking about the guest singers in the record

Lance Ellington
Kris Drever
Beverley Skeete
Katie Kissoon. YES, THE ONE THAT USED TO SING WITH CLAPTON (and MK in the Princes trust and Knebworth, for example)

and specially:

IMELDA MAY

I'm surprised nobody said anything, Imelda May is a great singer, really great!

Mac and Katie Kissoon used to sing together (brother and sister) and were pretty successful in the 70s.  She's also been backing singer for Van Morrison, Roger Waters, Elton John and George Michael etc.  Pretty sure she was singing with EC when Mark was touring with him 87-89.

Imelda May performed at the tribute concert for Bill Wyman's 80th birthday.

Imelda May is an Irish folk/jazz singer and Kris Drever is from the folk band Lau and also associated with John McCusker, so I think that there will still be a Celtic sound to some of the songs.

I won't mind the folkies if what they do is play a "Setting me up" version with a mindblowing end of duels between MK on guitar, Richard on lapsteel, John on fiddle, Mike on flute and Nigel on sax.

Far better than Marbletown!

We know something about six songs.

1. “’Down The Road Wherever’ is a line from ‘One Song At A Time,’” says Knopfler, referring to the album title and one of its tracks. “I remember my pal Chet Atkins once saying that he picked his way out of poverty one song at a time, and it just stuck in my mind. You get to an age where you’ve written quite a few songs.

And I’ll be out of this place
And down the road wherever
There but for the grace, etcetera
I’ll see you later somewhere down the line
I’ll be picking my way out of here
One song at a time

2 .His early days in Deptford with Dire Straits

3. A stray football fan lost in a strange town

4. The compulsion of a musician hitching home through the snow

5. A man out of time in his local greasy spoon

6. On ‘Just A Boy Away From Home.’ That’s the only track on which Knopfler is not the sole writer, as it features the melody of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone

3 and 6 is the same song. And maybe there are more doubles.

I recall listening to "A heart full of holes" fragment in the KTGC promo video before it was released, also listening tosmall parts of "Heart of oak", "Basil", "Taormina" and "Wherever I go" in the small Tracker video.

Someone said in facebook, I don't know who or the source, that today there will be one video, so I really hope we have something new to talk about!

Not being too fond of the first single (as it turned out I was not the only one, and Early Bird was mentioned a lot), I started thinking about the time we got Tracker.
In 2015 already many people recognized a lot of familiar stuff in the Tracker songs, some used the word "recylcling" and listed what the found in which song. Now we have an very obvious Early Bird in Good On You Son. I think we should not really raise our expectations too high with the new record and wonder how many other familiar tunes will turn up on Down The Road Whatever.

P.S.: Good On You Son grows on me I happily admit.  :wave

I know the guys who manage Mark's social channels and can reach them out for things like that, in fact I already did it a couple of times.

If you ordered it at mk.com the wait could last some months more. Being lucky you will have the box in January 2019.

I don't think they supply the snippets anymore, the album just gets released and that's it.
But of course, usually the whole album gets leaked anyway so official release is like :lol :lol

Amazon Germany offers the Box for 79,99 €. The description is (still) wrong or incomplete. But that's usual the first days/weeks. They started with 103 € last week.

I also asked at Media Markt last week 79 €. No Info yet about a possible exclusive Media Markt track.

Yesterday it was priced 112 euros, I used their link to show them cheaper prices and it looks like they reduced it :)

Does anybody have an idea or any experience where you should order the Deluxe LP Box Set in order to get it the fastest (i.e. ideally on release day)?

Slightly cynical from you as often. Coincidentally I exactly share your opinion, but the question was where to get it the fastest possible way. They are excellent in what they do. And maybe you have to compromise strong opinions when it comes to the new MK album. For me it's easy, it's indeed Media Markt within one kilometer and they have all editions usually on the evening before release day. But if you live somewhere into nowhere, or on an island, it's maybe not that easy and Amazon is the best choice. You cannot be political correct ALL the time, can you?

Unfortunately, this is not a chance to many people, and Amazon is the best choice specially if you have prime account and you can get it in a locker close to where you leave and you can pick it when you come home for work instead of fight with stupid delivery agencies driver that for an unknown reason can't go to your house when you are in your house and their office close before you can arrive there to pick it up

I do understand, of course. That's why I've been saying "if it is possible". Amazon does a superb job when it comes to making things easily available.

The last MK record I bought in a local store was Shangri-la, since then, it was impossible so I had to purchase from big stores or internet, and big stores are one hour and a half far from me so, Amazon is my friend...

Ok, then it is the only viable option. However, the best thing is, we are talking about a new album   :wave

I'm absolutely certain now. A long time has passed and the album has passed the time test successfully. Knopfler's best album with Sailing to Philadelphia.

It's only a couple of months.  A couple of years will give a truer reflection.

I'll give an example of this theory.  When the film Pulp Fiction was released I was at high school and everyone, including many critics, thought it was the best film ever released.  Really.  Looking back to 1993 now it clearly isn't.  It's a very good film but there are many, many better films released before and it.  There was a real hysteria over the film in some circles at the time.

Same with BIA back in '85.  Now looking back I prefer OES, an album I was disappointed with on release.  Only years will tell how an album will fare.

I have everything delivered at my office, works out pretty well ;-)
And a pity for me as well that the local shop has closed about 10 years ago. I always bought there, but a lot of people go shop online for less than 1 euro difference and then moan that the shops are closing  ::)

Hi amiters,
IMO DTRW is a very Great album, but not MK's Best. It's an album full of great songs like OSATT or TM but when look behind at other albums like TRCKR, STP, GH, GL ...I say that Mark has as solo, ds, collaborations, in 40 years blended of great works and DTRW add other wonderful new tracks an a Musician and Songswriter extraordinary career. :clap :clap
