Literally taken, it could be about the pioneer times in North America when trapping and fur trade was the main industry during the early exploration of the northern frontier. Trappers would be out in the wilderness (hinterlands) for several months and would only come back to civilization to sell their pelts at trading posts which were usually established in remote areas. Being a trapper required a stamina and huge experience in living out on the land. An inexperienced person would perish within days exposed to elements and the wildlife. You had to be tough, or you needed a trapper man to survive. Trapping is still a way of life in northern Canada where I live. Fur industry is still very much alive and it is a legitimate industry supported by the local government. There are still many trappers out there in small, mostly aboriginal communities across the North, and the wilderness is as unforgiving as it was 200 years ago.
Hudson Bay Company was one of such early outfits that rose into power mostly thanks to trapping and fur industry. There were many people that became rich and "fat" thanks to these guys out there on the land, the trappers. As usual with MK, the double meaning of the song could be how some manage to raise to power and take advantage of the folks that work hard with their bare hands, a lower working class so to speak. The two last verses are the best indication of that. "I’m the lifeline for your big soft ass. It’s the trapper puts it in first class"
However, as the lyrics say, trappers need to sell their goods too to survive. So "I need you but you need me ". Also, trappers love what they do, they wouldn't like to do anything else, so "you better let this trapper be a trapper".
Anyway, just my first thoughts. I can relate to this story seeing it happen every day. We haven't changed since ancient times.
You can listen trapper man here:Wow, did not expect this, thanks for sharing. It sounds really good!

More or less at one hour after a piece of folk music.
Quite nice
hey guys, someone know how take the song from there? :hmm
Totally great. Loved it. Intro indeed TR sound alike.
Otherwise JF and Rail King totally failed to describe this gem. Totally phantastic Dire Straitish, fresh, enercetic. HIS voice gives me shivers all over.
Would have loved to hear this properly on the Radio without any knowing ... legendary MK remembrance moment forever.
Perfect Live Opener. Lovely break.
Oh yes, fucking nice guitar.. nice guitar.
Comparable from the impact with This Is Us.
Very nice piano on it.
If someone captures it as mp3 please pm to me!

Ssshh.... Don't agree on that this is a good opener. Remember last time? Everyone wanted Laughs and we got Broken Bones!
I know little about Springsteen but it’s reminiscent of his sound that I got from my first listen.
I don't hear any sax, trumpet and trombone on this track. The track must be 6.00 long, it is 5.30 now. Maybe some small part missing?
I know what you mean and I knew this would cause controversy.

It's MK trademarked but I hear americana all over it.

I did say I loved it ! ;D ;)
difficult for me to describe music in words with my poor english, but it is in my to 3 songs of the album, and a very very good opener
Yes but try to live with it. It's not worth spoiling the fun.

Will wait for the live version of this song and hopefully mister Fletcher would be kind enough to switch off his organ for once. You can't believe how much I'm disappointed with this arrangement. The song is so great and here goes this pack of continental mosquitoes to have an intercourse with your ears. I won't write about this anymore, but I just had to say it.

A proper Hammond with the Leslie should've done a better job yes.

Why two random guys from Russia and Sweden understand that and veteran musicians with their own studio and 50+ years of playing don't?

My guess would be a longer intro before the drums kick in.

You’ve made your point, you hate the organ, we get it. Making music, being creative and producing stuff is a magical process, saying that these guys don’t ‘understand’ your organ point of view is nonsense, besides that they really don’t care what you think and they shouldn’t. BIA has a lot of aweful sounds yet it sold quite well. They liked it, they thought it was right ao they kept the organ in the mix. MK has lots of songs with proper Hammond parts, listen to those if you don’t like this one.Yes but try to live with it. It's not worth spoiling the fun.

Listened to it again this morning, stunning song! So excited for the rest of the album!
@quizzaciously - Hey, man. You started your own thread to display your hatred for the new songs. I respect your opinion, but do you have to repeat yourself in every single thread? You sound like a victim, like someone who's suffered great injustice. It's an album, man.
This song too is really nice. Lots of positive energy. One thing that irritates me is the organ sound - I believe Guy used it on Beryl too.
I sense Tom Petty's influences in this one. It might become my second favorite MK album right behind STP.
This song has this "stadium anthem" feel to it. Could be Springsteen song. Love it.

Petty, Springsteen, Dylan... it’s a hell of a song!

Really great song in my opinion. Classic MK guitar sound, the slightly melancholic vocal lines give me remind of Metroland, and it overall reminds me of the feeling What It Is, Darling Pretty and alike gave me the first time I heard them. Had never expected MK to make another song like this and for me up there as one of the best openers in years. Absolutely don't mind the organ at all too. Instant classic imo, and hope to hear it live.
Love the song but anybody else think it's a bit close to Jokerman by Dylan?
Number one
Number one
Is every song number one for you Robson? ;D
The melody and delivery sounds the same to me, but maybe just me. :)Love the song but anybody else think it's a bit close to Jokerman by Dylan?
Its both about a 'man', and thats it
Mark Knopfler - Trapper Man. I like it:)
Melody on the verse is the same as I Want Candy by Bow Wow Wow.
Just saying. :)

The "bad" songs from the 80s are better than the "good" songs of today.
Has anyone else noticed there is a different lyric to 'Trapper Man' on the official MK website?
The actual lyric is:
"Let the gold and silver come to you
So leave the dirty work to me"
However, the lyric printed on the official MK website is:
"Let the gold and silver come to you
I need you but you need me"
I just saw this yesterday in the Scottish Highlands „Trading Post“ with „Bacon Rolls“ quite funny :lolOutermost
