I find it sounds like as it was recorded during the OES era
guitra tone, rythm. A little bit between Millionaire blues and when it comes to you I may say
the style and sound would fit very well on radio I think
it's hard to describe with words, it's more a feeling

Good show, at least it will be seen here!!
According to Guy another Single is imminent......
'Another single on its way I understand...and this one is a KILLER' :clap
My bet is back on the dance floor or Trapper Man
both can make a very good single
I'd rather vote for Back on the dance floor, because Trapper man has the same kind of rhythm than GOYS, so it could be heard as "similar" (while it's not of course)
if it's not one of these two songs, then....it will confirm Mark's weird choices ;D :lol
I think the word KILLER is a deliberate hint it’s Back On The Dance Floor.

Why would "killer" hint to "Back on the Dancefloor"? It may be just me, but I'm not getting what you mean.

Killer only means very good/excellent song
I'm thinking it's a 'rather good' song thus the use of the phrase 'Killer' by Guy to describe it.
Remember MK often referred to Ruth's albums as 'killers'....
It seems Guy has a totally other meaning what a "Killer" is than us. I tried to find the last real "killer" song MK wrote... Speedway at Nazareth? He made Hill Farmer a Live Killer indeed, and he wrote many good ones since then (Basil, 5.15am, Monteleone). But a Killer?

It's not on iTunes (yet), but on Apple Music yes. And on YouTube. And I was able to download the file, but...
I can't share it via private messages to everybody, because I'm lazy. If you know a better way to do it, I can.

Just a small part when he is singing. The complete song is totally different.
I dont care, this one is nicer than Terminal :)
Awesome. I think I like this one more than GOYS. Easily could be a leftover DS song from OES

Sounds really great. Groove is intoxicating. I love the synths and background vocals on this, also how Mark's vocals move from center to the sides during the chorus. Can't wait to play this on my hifi tomorrow. This tune will work great live, I should think!
A bit lazy to recycle the Terminal of Tribute To melody, though. ToTT was of course just a bonus track, so it's not too bad, but still.
Also, I know it's a terrible thing to say, but sometimes miss Mark's gruff voice from when he smoked.

well if you just need a Pensa Sound + rock base to sound DS, then yes... but can't find anything of OES atmosphere/melodies out of it
Where can I hear this?
I don't see it on Spotify. I'm in the US.
The melody of the chorus is similar to ABBA's S.O.S.. Go to 0:45:I heard that too, cracking song though.

:D
I hear a part of "The Letter" here too! I just loooove the groove of this song! :)
Great song! I really like it :) In fact I need to write this, 'cause I'm a bit dissapointed of one essential thing for me. I'm the drummer and I like the style of Ian Thomas. His rhythms are sometimes tricky to play, but hmmm, he doesn't do many fills at all. Listening to "Back on the dance floor" I only heard two or three maybe. I am a bit confused, 'cause drumfills really trigger the music, especially when you change the rthythm and I wonder why he doesn't use them when it's appropriate. The same problem I had with the whole Tracker album in fact. This is my opinion as a musician of course, but Knopfler used to have much better drummer in the past :)
I'm not gonna lie. This is a skipper.
It's like Vic&Ray just got groove. But it's still Vic&Ray...
do not agree. but hey, that is what makes us human i guess.I'm not gonna lie. This is a skipper.

Skipper was the first word that got in my mind, too. Then: "boring". And then: Is this really from the same man who wrote Telegraph Road or Romeo & Juliet or Sailing To Philadelphia?
The drums however are pretty cool, together with Danny's percussion. Couldn't bother about Terminal or not as I never liked that one either.

It's been the very first thing I listened to this morning... And I was really, really surprised by the care they put on the arrangement, the sonds and effects... I really like it, it's really a good song, I too find reminiscences from TOTT, but this one is SO MUCH BETTER that tott will be a pale memory.
I'd just have the curiosity to hear this same song with a more "liquid" sound, a Strat sound or similar, but I know it won't be possible.
(PS: just to add one more song to the list...: anybody else hearing some "Shot the monkey" of Peter Gabriel in it?) ::)

I have to agree here with PensaGhost. A bit of You Don't Know You're Born in there too. However, that doesn't make it a bad song. In fact I love it and think the guitar sound is fab and the synths are also great. Certainly my cup of tea. I only hope they aren't releasing the best song from the album and it's all downhill now...
my favourite Mark songs of recent years? Haul Away, Radio City Serenade, Laugh and Jokes, Lights of Taomina, Heart of Oak, Silver Eagle, My Heart Has Never Changed, Yon Two Crows, Border Reiver, Get Lucky, Montelone, Piper to the End.
The Terminal of Tribute melody was simply too good to be left out of a main album, problem solved now.
This is basically a lighter, less dramatic version of the same song/melody put in a different dress with a little bit of
many other MK songs here and there as others mentioned.

If only you could erase this awful Terminal Of Tribute To from your memory and replace it with the Dance Floor, problem would be really solved. Still think Terminal is one of the worst Mark’s songs lyrics-wise. To harsh.
Not for me! (referring to the insomnia comment).
I love TOTT, both musically and lyrically. Yes it is amazingly harsh, especially for Mark who was never so explicit before (nor ever since). It is interesting because it shows how pissed he must have been with Alan Clark... showing the complexity of this character :)The Terminal of Tribute melody was simply too good to be left out of a main album, problem solved now.

I love Mark dearly but he's an artist that doesn't grow. He just keeps remaking the same songs over and over again. There's always this feeling that I've heard it before.

Mark Knopfler is unique - meaning no matter the style, the instrument or the band he always manages to impose his identity on the song - and that may be the very reason why it feels like every song is a rehash for some people.
on about 12 listens now of this song, im still not sure with this song etc, think I would preferer some flutes and violin in there , or a blues song etc , but still waiting to see what I think about it,
but edging on not fussed overall about this song ,
This one went "strait" to my all time favorites. I couldn't care less if it resembles or contains fragments of other songs. Pretty much everything produced these days could be analyzed like that but why. I enjoy every second of it. Brilliant work from MK and team!

Agree with some comments here...
I was really excited about it when I first heard the guitar during the first part of the song...
The rest? Hmm, it's not awful (MK never is), but it's not "Wow!" either, it's good but not the best one of the album I think...
After the first 1-2 listenings, I thought I'd rate this one higher than GOYS, but it's starting to become the opposite now... just the way it is.
Anyway, happy another single came out before album release.
Now I just want to know my FA seats!!!! :clap

Of course you can say it is boring if you find it so - that is personal taste. With this and GOYS I am hoping that there are much better songs on the album - by which I mean I hope there are songs I like much more than these two. If there are not then I will hate the album - but I am 99.9% sure there will be plenty on there I like. The style of the first two songs released is not for me......my favourite Mark songs of recent years? Sometimes I do not understand. If Mark records similar albums, I read complaints, now we have something new, fresh, I also read complaints. Of course, everyone has their own taste, but I do not understand :)

It's simply the fact that it doesn’t matter how well and overloaded something is produced.. when the material is weak it will shine through and all the layers seem like a disguise. Contrary would be a song like Heart of Oak which needs nothing but Mark and a guitar and is so powerful because the song itself is high quality. BOTD is hardly something to expect from a songwriter but.. pop music?
Or: The less confident Mark and Guy are about the material, the more layers they wrap on to it to disguise the weakness.
This is nothing you have to agree with, it's just my opinion.
LE
Definitely a skipper for me. Not surprised though. These days I'm down to 1 or 2 good songs per MK album at best so still plenty to chose from when it comes out. Unless this time I get to zero lol.I'm not gonna lie. This is a skipper.

Listening to it right now and having Guy's sentence from today in my mind "If we don’t play it live I'll leave the band.."
It struck me that it really could be a title track on a Guy Fletcher solo album, soundwise, with MK guesting on the guitar. And it would be the best track on the album for sure. It's just not Mark.
So what's it about? What's the setting? Poker? Striptease? Lots of clothes and shoes are mentioned. What people dress up like this, with a skull cane and these kinds of hats? Las Vegas?

I know that Ian Thomas is a highly recognized drummer, but I also find his drumming a little uninspiring at times. Maybe he was told to play that way by Mark? I honestly miss Pick Withers at times...
I totally agree. I really liked the last Imelda May album, produced by T Bone Burnett, so I was curious to hear her on a Mark's song. But put the amazing voice of Imelda in Guy Fletcher's hands, and he will make her sound like a poor 80's backing vocal. Such a shame !
Shame because I really had high hopes for this song. They had Imelda May and they came up with this?

I like the chorus singing with Guy's background vocals very much by the way. Shake em all down..
LE
I don't understand people saying it sounds like "late Dire Straits".I'm not sure, maybe it's the overdriven guitar sound that is a bit more crunchy than most of what we heard recently (Pensa?). Plus this laidback singing manner, plus lack of pipes and fiddles, plus the groove... It's an overall feeling that makes this tune fitting more in the OES era than MK solo era. I think JF was spot on when he tried to describe the vibe of this song.
Late Dire Straits to me is On Every Street.
Not one song on that record sounds like these two new songs.
Maybe people are hearing what they want to hear.
Or maybe I'm wrong.
Either are equally possible.

If the credits posted here are correct, the backing vocals are not Guy's, but instead Danny's.

I believe the "dance floor" in question is metaphorical, like "back in the game". Hence the reference to a "comeback".
I really dig this song. Kind of lukewarm on GOYS, which I think is weak lyrically and not well sung. If the rest of the album is in the same vein as these two I will be pleased. Not that I don't like the folk-roots stuff, but I'm ready for something different.
I like this song! Voice, guitars, synths etc. Nice. Sound reminds me of the Brothers in arms album. Guy was clearly responsible for the pling-plong sounds and patterns on that album, and they have made a comeback here. The long directionless outtro too. I don’t hear any On Every Street album in the song, but Danys bongos are playing Your Latest Trick from the OES tour throughout the song (a bit annoying, because you’d expect Chris White to appear any second). I hear a bit of Follow Me Home in the song too. I normally like MK’s more country and rootsy songs best, but this was nice! And for the first time in AMIT history I don’t agree with Dusty
I think it's about gambling clubs. :)
I was thinking about Your Latest Trick the other day, too and with its' comeback on the set list 2015 and with Danny back in the band I think it's pretty likeky that we will have it in OES style, don't you think?Yes, I would think so. But perhaps with more jazzy drumming because of Ianto?

Just thinking...... Lots of classical composers wrote variations on a piece of music they had written, for example Elgar's Enigma Variations, which were sketches on the same theme, but each one written for different members of his friends and family. So why shouldn't MK write a variation on Terminal, or whatever? If it was OK for Elgar, etc why not MK? :think ;)

Yes he has done that several times. Walk of Life/Cannibals.. Sultans/Lady Writer, and so on. He develops ideas, is maybe not convinced and is trying again. He looks forward and seldomly plays his old records, so the songs are just versions to him maybe.

I think the synths are a major reason why this feels more DS than Mark's solo work. Especially why non-die hards would think that way. Synths plus "soft rock" plus radio-friendly song. That really was the DS sound in the 80s, which of course the sound that most people associate with DS.
Maybe. But it's definitely better than Les Boys or One World :)
I have listened to both tracks now several times in a row and I haven't for the life of me any idea where BOTDF should sound like TOTT... maybe I am too facile...

No doubt about that, Val.
But if he would have come up with an album just he and an acoustic, with a dozen songs near the quality of River Of Grog or Heart Of Oak, even if they all would have just been around 2 or 3 min., and abandoned the electric guitar, I guess I would have been much more pleased.
But of course, these are just two songs. One or two real MK gems from the new record could make me become reconciled pretty fast. I have very high hopes for Drover's Road and Nobody's Child after JF's and Rail King's descriptions.
LE
Anyway. For my money The Letter is one of the all time great pop songs and I find this video hilarious. Check out the audience!
https://youtu.be/4_BuX7EXqvQ
I re-read Rail King's first impressions and I must say I am totally impressed by them. I adore how positive and motivated the lines are written and they really make me even more curious. Much better written as anything from journalists in reviews and similiar. (Liked that Captain Future reference, big fan of Christian Bruhn's score. Who would have thought that my both passions would come together on an album from MK).
LE
Yes, I'm sure there will be songs on the album to satisfy everyone's tastes. As for me I really love BOTDF - even more with each listen and, although I like GOYS a lot, I prefer Dancefloor. Acoustic songs, like River of Grog, will be great to have on the album too, but there has to be some upbeat music too otherwise it may be rather dull and samey.
I am just glad that MK is still exploring other music, even in his "old age". It shows that he is still looking forward and hasn't followed the usual elderly singers who have resorted to covers and Christmas albums - thank God! :)
OK if we are saying it's OK to recycle your own stuff that's fine but not sure about other artists.
Wouldn't surprise me if whoever owns the publishing for The Letter is sending their own letter to MK right now. It's note for note.
Someone said, I think, that it sounded like something on a Guy solo record - and I am not a fan of his music at all. I don't find it innovative - and the fact that it is Mark trying something new matters not a jot to me - for me it is about whether I like the song or not - and I don't like this song.

That is probably why Guy is raving about this song. It's right up his alley. Just like yourself I'm hoping that the other tracks differ in style.
Pipes and fiddles, please come back. All is forgiven! ;D
I gave this a few more listens but it got worse rather than better - easily one of my least favourite MK songs. I find it bland, boring, soulless, and lacking in any depth. I find Guy's influence takes the song into areas that I am just not interested in musically - and the lyrics are not capitaving enough to then get me interested. It was similar, though not as much so, with GOYS. Someone said, I think, that it sounded like something on a Guy solo record - and I am not a fan of his music at all. But - that is no big deal as I have said - every Mark album contains songs I love, songs that I like, songs I find ok, and, usually, one or two I don't like at all. For me one of Mark's great strengths is his variety, despite what some say, I find his styles pretty varied amongst genres of music - and it sounds like this album will be no different. I listed earlier the sort of songs I love - my favourite Mark solo songs....to those I would include, over the years.....Golden Heart, Darling Pretty, Night in Summer, Sailing to Philadelphia, What it Is, The Last Laugh, Silvertown Blues, One More Matinee, Speedway, Old Pigweed, Devil Baby, Hillfarmer, Ragpicker, Koxville, Quality Shoe, Stand-Up Guy, Paraguay, Scaffolder, Secondary Waltz, Heart full of Holes.....that's the stuff I love - and I hope to add to that list with some stuff of the new album.

That is probably why Guy is raving about this song. It's right up his alley. Just like yourself I'm hoping that the other tracks differ in style.
Pipes and fiddles, please come back. All is forgiven! ;D
Sorry - I listed my favourite songs from Tracker, Privaterring and Get Lucky earlier in the thread so didn't repeat them......have a scroll back!
I love Dancefloor more and more each day - can't stop listening! I also love all of the songs that Nick 14 mentions and I'm sure the new album will be a mix of songs that satisfies every taste. :)
So what's it about? What's the setting? Poker? Striptease? Lots of clothes and shoes are mentioned. What people dress up like this, with a skull cane and these kinds of hats? Las Vegas?

On the dance floor? :lol
Yes but please don't leave my question too early only because of Quizzaciously's funny comment. Comeback idea is obvious, and I get that the dance floor has the same meaning as the first lines of Everybody pays (I got shot off my horse so what? I'm up again and playing in one of these big saloons on main). But he describes a certain type of character, especially about clothIng style. Who has a comeback here?

I agree with regard the folkies and am sure we will inevitably get some Pipes and Whistles but hopefully not too much... I personally really like BOTDF along with GOYS....
JF, is Imelda featured on other tracks as prominently as on this track?

I don't think so. Rail King, do you remember ?
about artists recycling their own songs/melodies/chords structures etc....
Of course it was very often made by bluesmen, and early rocknroll musicians like Chuck Berry.
But it seems it was a common practice before that time, during the 19th century
the french author-composer-singer Georges Brassens dit it with "la prière" and "il n'y a pas d'amour heureux"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wvlz1_TOYHk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xo7e0UkT4XA
and aslo with "Le nombril des femmes d'agents", "Carcassonne " and "La chaude pisse"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCKu8-u4-HA

he explained in an interview that in the nineteenth century, there were circulated basic melodies (a bit like the blues in jazz) on which the singers could stick the words they had composed. These all-purpose melodies were called "tones".
The tones were used until the 50s in France, especially by the "chansonniers of the Grenier de Montmartre" (on the Paris Inter Radio) who wrote or even improvised topical couplets on standard tunes, and then audience took up the refrains.
But seeing that what he had sought to resurrect was misunderstood, ("Who is this slacker who serves us two songs on the same tune?") Brassens did not repeat the experiment.

Am I the only one who wonders about the strange sound of the SHAKE ....sh-sounds? Sounds not right to me.

I really don’t get the negatives from so many of you. I’m away from home and have yet to hear it through the 'proper' Hi-Fi. But on good 'phones, it made an immediate and positive impact on me, one of the best things he’s done in years. And also, one of the most commercial things he’s done in years. UK readers may understand what I mean when I say that I could even see him performing it on Strictly. Don’t sneer - that would mean seven or eight million people getting to hear it. And the song title is kind of appropriate!

It is so weird when people say things like "I don't get the negatives from so many of you" - as if one person can't concieve that another person woud not like the thing they like. Really, really odd. I don't like the song - you do. I would never say "I don't get why some of you are so positive about this song" - because....erm...people like different things. I am, generally, not a fan of overly commercial sounding music - in the way I think you mean it - so the fact that this is commercial, or sounds good on the radio, whatever that means etc holds no value for me. For me, songs stand and fall on thier own merits - the depth of the song, the power, the meaning, the joy, the fun etc. For me, this song is a souless bore and a grand case of the emperor's new clothes. But is really is quite easy to understand people liking different things.

If Guy is singing background vocals on this one, it could be his voice, as his "s" is a bit "rich". (Not quite as rich as Sean Connery, though ha-ha) Or, it could just be the blend of all the voices. S and sh sounds, so called sibilants, are often very problematic during recording. They often use a technique called de-essing to alleviate this. Playback too for that matter can be an issue. If you have a sound system which is a bit louder in the treble region (and have a room with hard walls, which results in echo), it can sound horrible. Try some Bach choral music sung in German on a system like that.
I am not arguing with anyone - I'm responding to comments......Why would you think I wouldn't like What It Is? I love it - already said that on here before. What It Is is nothing like Dancefloor as a song though.

Where did you read it?
@quizzaciously the beginning and end is not a shuffle, the beat is half-time :)
yes half-time
shuffle is meant for non-straight time. In french we call it "ternary"
by the way did you notice that in the whole DS discography, there are only 3 songs in shuffle time : Fade to black, My parties, and Bernadette
I know it's all subjective, and we all like different things and yada yada yada...
But no way is BOTD as good as What It Is. Never in a million years. What It Is is classic Knopfler.

I agree My first listens too BOTD I didnt really like at all, but very slowly growing on me now, but do preferer GOYS , and yes What It is , is one of my most listened too dire straits / Knopfler songs, love the breakdown live with mike and john especially in 2013 and awesome opener too!!I know it's all subjective, and we all like different things and yada yada yada...

I like both but that's the truth right there. Different class.
Listening to both the new songs for a wee while now I tend to lean toward GOYS as my favourite.
Really Back On The Floor bonus? I suspect that the new album is perfect :)

Real opinon. It's a great record with a mixture of things that you won't expect from someone which his last record was " tracker".
I had no skippers on Privateering or Tracker and still listen right through, but already on this album I know there are three or four that I will skip. Which means that this could be my worst album, I'm sorry to say, but I will give it time to grow - hopefully!
Tracker's sound so lifeless and thin. Drums sounds like a childs drum kıt. Has a good songs yes, but sounds badly. Not a sonic way of course. Tastes are different of course.

It doesn't sound thin and lifeless to me, or I wouldn't have been listening for three years! ;)
I don't hate it. It's a nice song.
But in comparation with the rest of record, doesn't say anything to me at least musically. Actually I would had put it between the bonus, after listening to all songs.

There are several for me.

I think it's about gambling clubs. :)
Me, too. I read that "smokeless" is an US expression. So maybe Las Vegas indeed?

This songs keeps being the biggest skipper in my opinion... don't like the style of it.. wasn't it Guy who said this was a killer before it was released as 2nd single?
Jeesus......
