LYRICS

The ragged kid nobody wanted
Left alone to ramble wild
Long ago he was abandoned
Nobody’s child

Never smiles and never chatters
Never quarrels or complains
Grown as hard as the Sierras
And the Western Plains
Come a’cow cow yicky yicky yea
A’come a’cow cow yicky yicky yea

Learned to swing a broken bottle
Learned to use his fists and knife
In the bar rooms and bordellos
Of his life

He drifted down towards the borders
The sky was dark but it did not rain
Came the meanest pistoleros
In the Western Plains

He fell in with these desperadoes
Thieves and killers every one
Prizes hanging from their saddles
With their guns
Come a’cow cow yicky yicky yea
A’come a’cow cow yicky yicky yea

The ragged kid nobody wanted
Left alone to ramble wild
Now he rides beside the Devil
Nobody’s child
Come a’cow cow yicky yicky yea
A’come a’cow cow yicky yicky yea

I'm gonna draw another darkhorse (no pun intended) out of the sleeve. I bet that at least one percent of the song has got inspiration from this Leadbelly song.  :)

A lot of typical Knopfler touches in here - nothing particularly new.  Still a nice song though.  Would fit in nicely on STP.

So far it's the first song on the album written by Mark Knopfler and not by Guy Fletcher.
All the "experimental" songs are now skippers for me... But this one is a very good one.

Wow, you got it absolutely right. I love being predictable ;D

But I don't know why. To me the song is really great if I want to learn it on guitar. I want to learn Nobody’s Child for sure.

The bridge is very close to the bridge in Sands of Nevada.  :)

In fact the whole song is Nevada-esque.

I wonder what's up with MK and Nevada.  ;D

Nice song as well, to my ears this is again something completely new in the MK songbook. Mark just continues to amaze!
On the other hand, Im not sure if I am so fond of the ’cow yicki yee’ part, maybe Guy came up with that idea;)

Very catchy song, energetic and nicely sung by Mark. However, don’t quite like the 80s sound of the drums and never have liked the Farfisa sound by Guy.

Would love to have the three new songs ripped as mp3 so I can listen to them on my proper stereo, so if anyone would be so kind to mail me it would be much appreciated

(Got the links. Thanks to (you know who you are :) ).)

This song is beautiful. Lovely chord changes, and love Mark's singing here, PARTICULARLY when he goes into that high-pitched voice. Sounds a bit like Pete Rowan. Great touch.

The chord progression is a bit Richard Bennett.

Yeah, this is a very good song. That's what I would call classic MK. It's slow, it has solos, it has character.

I barely like the other available songs, but this is the first one I want to hear over and over again.

And yes, Paraguaaaayyyy is definitely falsetto, but a short one ;D

Exactly, it's almost 5 a.m. in my time zone already, I need some sleep. And I could be wrong in the chords because of that :lol

I tried to do other songs, but I just can't do it right now. I'm too upset with the production of overall good songs.

For me I'm not impressed by this one to be honest. Its for sure Mark, it is nice but does not a lot with me. Maybe still grows on me  ;). I have to say though, guitar wise he really shows more interresting and nice stuff on these new songs, also in this one, that is what I like also in this song as well. Not a skipper, but also not a wow yet  ;D

I’m not sure if that’s Mark doing those falsettos but you guys are probably right. Don’t wanna sound repetitive but I love this one too  ;D

JF, you nailed it! It does have that little STP flavor! That should explain why I like this album so much  8)

Am I the only one who find the "Come a’cow cow yicky yicky yea' thing ridiculous and out of place in this song?

The feeling of the song is quite sad but sounds beautiful but when the yickiyea falsetto arrives... It gets ruined for me.

Agree completely. That falsetto plus the unpleasant strange way the "k" sounds in it. Also this is the most boring one so far.

I, for one, love the falsetto part. It puts a very eerie touch to the song.

As for the meaning of the phrase, my guess it's what cowboys shouted to call the cattle.

I also see Leadbelly has a song (Western Cowboy) with this phrase.

Other than that: Lighten up, folks.

Other than that: Lighten up, folks.

Why?

Because you want?

I don't remember any rule that prevent anyone to express what they feel or think about anything related to a MK song or live show etc, but I recall very well a rule about NOT TELLING PEOPLE WHAT THEY CAN SAY.

Just saying.

It's ridiculous that is needed to remember people about this again and again. It's so simple...

The sound of that K..  In yeekee...  makes it unbearable almost to enjoy this song.. Plus it's pretty depressing and boring. Also in the running order it totally seems to be at the wrong place between Crap on the dance floor and You Never Walk Alone.

My favourites so far:
A Song At A Time 8/10
My Bacon Roll 7/10
Drover's Road 7/10
Nobody Does That 7/10

Back On The Dance Floor 4/10
Good On You Son 5/10
Trapper Man 4/10

Nobody's Child 3/10
Just A Boy 2/10
Floating Away not able to judge yet, not more than 4/10

This shows just that there is absolutely no album feel to me so far. It's a bunch of totally different songs with no relation apart that synths stuff.
Almost like a sample album..

You keep using the word "allowed". It's not about allowing or not allowing differing opinions. I'm just addressing the party poopery going on around here. It's a new album release from one of our favorite artists, a cause for celebration, and some of you are simply stuck in a completely bleak and negative outlook on things. It really is incredible. A rotten apple ruins the barrel.

We indeed had this same discussion a while ago. It must have to do with the decade we are living in.
The PC departement was never so strong as nowadays. I would bet that 20 years ago nobody would have given a toss about being negative. Party Pooper says it actually.. hedonistic culture, life is a party, no strong opinions or different ones allowed. Very sad.

So you are adressing at to the right direction... because we are wrongs and you are right, isn't it?

Should we go in the direction you adress us do bleating?

We are not in a wrong direction, we are in different directions. So no need to be adressed. Just respect others opinions as we respect yours. Nobody is telling you what your opinion should be.

The songs we already heard sits in a comfortable 7/8 rate as MK managed to do something different and surprising from the previous records, there are non 10 but some 8 ratings.

As an album it's probably gonna team up with Shangri-La and Golden Heart, right behind STP.

I listened in album order today - 10 songs in total (missing When You Leave and the final five songs). This is where I am at the moment:

Trapper Man - 9/10
Back on the Dancefloor - 5/10
Nobody's Child - 7/10
Just a Boy Away From Home - 8/10
When You Leave - TBC
Good on You Son - 7/10
My Bacon Roll - 8/10
Nobody Does That - 6/10
Drovers' Road - 8/10
One Song At A Time - 9/10
Floating Away - 8/10
Slow Learner - TBC
Heavy Up - TBC
Every Heart in the Room - TBC
Rear View Mirror - TBC
Matchstick Man - TBC

It is hard to get much sense of an album here - but I will wait for the actual album before I come to any real view on that - complete with the other songs of course, some of which may help knit this thing together in a more cohesive way.
