LYRICS

When I was just a boy I’d be kicking a tin
Take the short cut home through the loony bin
I never gave much thought to the souls in there
I was just a boy, too young to care

Well the years go by and you get to see
A dream’s not the same as reality
Well a dream or two is going to crash and burn
And that’s the way that you live and learn

Well it was late one night and I woke at two
And I lay there thinking the way you do
But it’s a long dark night of the soul
When those thoughts are turning sad and old

And then outside on the empty street
I heard the sound of walking feet
Well it was just a boy away from home
And he was singing the song ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’

There is further inspiration from close to home in “Just A Boy Away From Home,” which rose from a memory back home in Newcastle, when his father was in hospital after a heart attack.
“He was in Newcastle General, which as anyone from the Northeast of England will know is very close to the football ground. He was lying awake in the middle of the night feeling a bit sorry for himself, and he heard a lad walking on the deserted street outside singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone.’ Of course, he was a Liverpool fan and he’d been to the match—or who knows, he might have missed it somehow. But there he was in Newcastle singing his song. My dad found it inspiring, the spirit of it.” The track includes a full, stirring reprise of the famous melody. “It just felt good to play it on the slide,” says Mark. “I thought, ‘I’ve started, so I may as well finish.’ And it’s fun for the band to play.”

Coincidentally I was thinking about Mark's parents the other day (thinking about his sentence in Life In Songs that he had a good upbringing from both parents.) Without getting too private, do we know if both parents are still alive? His father's death gets connected with not playing Tunnel of Love anymore.  When did he die? And how about his Mother?

I think his mother is still alive but I'm not sure. I recall when the Emmylou tour I saw somewhere a picture of MK and Emmy with their moms, but that was 12 years ago...

When I saw David Knopfler 2 or 3 years ago, he spoke about visiting his mother and having a cup of tea together.   He made the audience laugh about her repeating the same things and having to be patient with her!  ;D    I would say that she's now in her 90s - if she's still alive.  I believe his father died in 1993.

So we get the 'Your never walk alone' melody played on slide guitar

MK : “It just felt good to play it on the slide,”

I dare to predict that we will detect a little "Heart Full Of Holes" in this song, the polka part then replaced by You Never Walk Alone. It's so typical for Mark to get back to
certain styles with certain themes...

The first time I heard it I couldn’t stop crying, I don’t even listen to the song in public with headphones on because it gets me every time. It is a treasure, maybe the most special and touching song he ever recorded.

I still don’t understand
why I ever survived to be old
with a heart full of holes...

the line is epic really! "why I ever survived to be old
with a heart full of holes" it just tells everything about the life for you (if you're a human being).
I still can stop myself from crying but who knows if there will be a change on that in the near future  :thumbsup

Rodgers and Hammerstein are credited for the song:

Guess Mark has been listening to musicals alot for Local Hero. And it inspired him for this song.

You read this and see the "I" telling a story and inevitably you think "I" is Mark of course. It's a key to know the story of his Dad now as it shows that he writes with the voice of other people. I wonder how many other people are hidden behind all those "I's" in all those songs he has written over the years.

musically, it has absolutely nothing in common with Tunnel of love
the first part of song is based on a riff very similar to junkie doll, but the guitar is less saturated. I bet it's the 64 strat
the second part is based on you'll never walk alone, with a gorgeous slide outro

You were right, what a relief NOT to hear "Typical Guy" for a moment. Despite this song being a copy of Junkie Doll, I like this song.

The slide solo is amazing! And the whole Liverpool thing is great. Thankfully another gem on the album, pity it's only the second one.

Oh my God! The slide solo and build up is from another planet! THAT's why I still listen to Mark Knopfler. It's just insanely good.

One unmentioned part is the drumming of Ianto.

He's the best suited drummer for MKs music period. It's both advanced yet so fluent you forget the beat since you focus on MKs playing.

So props to Ian!

I feel pretty disappointed and dejected too, at the moment.   When I heard GOYS and Dancefloor I was overjoyed, especially Dancefloor, which is right up my street.   Then  last night I heard Trapperman and One Song at a Time.  Agreed, they are nice songs, but for me they are just too long and rather monotonous and I really dislike Guy's synths.   I listened to Just a Boy this morning, but, sorry, I don't like that one either.   The slide guitar, which everyone likes, sets my teeth on edge!    I hope these songs will grow on me, as I'm sure they will - I will have to give them time.    There are a couple of songs - Bacon Roll and Nobody Does That, which I can't bring myself to listen to yet.   Now, I understand how Nick14 felt!    I hope the rest of the album will restore my faith!    :)

Clearly the first part of this song is just an excuse to get to the other side with the slide guitar. You can almost imagine how this track was written/constructed: you have an idea of playing "You'll Never Walk Alone" on slide guitar, what should you do? You can't just play it and that's it. You have to build it up from something.

So forget about lyrics, forget about Junkie Doll cover, the main focus is on the slide solo and it's amazing, gives you goosebumps.

Much like this "Playtime Deluxe" blues song on Bill Wyman 80th Birthday. You're waiting for this big reveal at the end.

Just A Boy Away From Home is a track for people who loves solid groove, emotional slide guitar and GOOD arrangements.

I know the original song very well but I guess you have to be a football supporter to get the full impact of this song ... it does absolutely nothing with me apart from thinking okay now he plays that song on a slide. Hm. Why oh why. There is absolutely no emotional depth in that Junkie Doll Riff and that solo although  the lyrics about his Dad might have implied otherwise.
Second-Hand emarrassment is my momentary main emotion when hearing this, sorry.

I don't like the intro.  It sounds like a load of wrong notes.   Toe-curling!    :disbelief

Its also one of the important songs of my favourite club 'Feyenoord' and indeed, the solo hit me emotionally. I love it and give me goosebumbs every time.

It hits me emotionally even without football :lol

By the way, a very hardcore arrangement on this one. I figured it out on guitar and it has many, many cool chords in it.

This is the "You'll Never Walk Alone" part:

This song doesn't sound anything like I had expected.  From what I had heard about Mark's Dad in hospital etc I had expected a sombre sounding song with a couple of lines from YNWA played quietly at the end like Bonnie Banks was played live in WII.

It's not all it could've been but Junkie Doll is a good song.

Thanks!! the intro is a total copy of Junkie doll, which I'm okay with.  love the slide solo at the end though.

You can sing the whole Junkie doll lyrics and everything fit... but with Donegan gone rythmic.

The best part is the wonderful version of you'll never walk alone. Very emotional.

This is a cool song indeed. Same guitar riff as in Junkie Doll, as mentioned, but the whereas Junkie Doll is in my opinion very depressive (both musically and lyrically), this song has a much more positive outlook. I like that. Also like how the horns come in. As for the slide guitar, it is much better than the squeaky-clean sound on Tracker, but they must have put tons of compression on it, because the sounds sustains forever. Feels a bit unnatural. But overall a great song.

I like this one..

I am not a Liverpool and no bigger fan of any other PL club, I enjoy following the league... However whatever your team is, you can't deny that hearing YNWA at Anfield is magic. I like J. Klopp as well, he's brilliant with all his energy... So really enjoy the second half of this song when you hear the tones of YNWA from Knopfler  ;D

Yes Dortmund has it as well as a few other clubs in Europe. But you really dedicate it with the Reds :)

I like the idea that in times like these football fans across the continent are united by an old song like this.

No time right now, but after a dozen or so plays I love this one, wonderful stuff. I like everything I have heard bar Dancefloor and nobody does that....and GOYS leaves me a bit flat. But Trapper, One Song, Bacon, this one all very good. Nobody's child I'm not sure about at the moment. Good me a grower though.

Really getting into this fab tune/song and I chuckle when I hear the last three lines of the first verse as I can personally relate to them!

'Take the short cut home through the loony bin
I never gave much thought to the souls in there
I was just a boy, too young to care'

Where we lived when I was a boy, we had a 'residential' home for the elderly folk and I would take a  'short cut' through there but I guess I was scared of the residents looking at them as if they were deranged or from another planet!!!! Great lyrics as ever...

This one I've been listening to the most. It's funny because I never cared for Junkie Doll at all (and still don't) but he turned it around just enough so that it works for me. My only complaint would be instead of this pretty much note-for-note gospel cover at the end he should do a proper Knopfler solo (could be slide as well for all I care). That way it would instantly get into "top shit" category.
