Don't want to quibble but for me it is impossible to answer. It's more the opposite... for me the album starts at track 7 and goes through to the end .. All great ... one better than the other, with one exception maybe. The first six songs somehow all don't do it for me.. good music of course... but that's how I see it..

When you leave is the jewel of the record...

Floating away is "floating away" in my mind continously, love it!

My Bacon Roll, as well, a ctaching song.

One song at a time, great song as well

Nobody does that, great funky rythm.

Quite difficult to choose five!

Drover"s Road
One Song at a Time
My Bacon Roll
Nobody"s Child
Just a Boy away from. Home

But it"ll change through time.

I'd like to mention here what i really like about that album in general: Almost every song does not finish at a point leaving you asking yourself: "Why the heck did he let the song finish here?" - this Hill Farmer's Blues-trauma, you know? Many of the new songs just move on where you'd say: "Yes, that's what i had expected of a MK-Song". Hope, you get my point of view ;)

This album is maybe even worse than KTGC. There are way too many boring songs. Coincidentally I seem to have heard the gems first. These are my top 5. But after them that's it. Rest of songs are down the road whatever. The worst pieces from KTGC are blended with the worst from Metroland. God I'm disappointed.

1) One song at a time
2) Trapper man
3) Just a boy
4) Drover's road
5) Matchstick man

4) Matchstick Man
5) Back on the Dancefloor

I think it will change from day to day; but after the few first listenings it looks something like this:

1. Trapper Man
2. Heavy Up (Oh yess!  ;D)
3. One Song at a Time
4. Just a Boy Away from Home
5. Back on the Dance Floor

This is my current top 5:

1 - One Song At A Time
2 - Trapper Man
3 - Nobody's Child
4 - My Bacon Roll
5 - Drover's Road

You can add Matchstick Man as sixth choice, all other songs are skippers for me (I actually don't hear bonus tracks).

Ok I try again ...

My Bacon Roll
Drover's Road
Every Heart In The Room
One Song At A Time
Don't Suck Me In

Nobody Does That
Matchstick Man so far as you recognize it
Heavy Up

LE

Still agree to my list.  ;D

I am very pleased with this album over all. Maybe it has to do with having very low expecatins this time.
There are very good songs on it, the two first released tracks are among the weakest. A very good and fresh vibe. The band really shines on this. Guy's influence is 90% right on spot. Which artist today (on this level and of this age) comes up which such a great variety of phantastic played music?

Something happened. He is more easy and more free in some decision. Is if in "so what?" The long wait was worth this album.

I put it on from track 7 and listen through to the very last track. Pale Imitation is by the way also very very interesting and a song that appeals very much to me.

The fact that I am findiong a top 5 so hard is a testament to what a great record MK has made.

At the moment, I would go with:

1. One Song At A Time
2. Trapper Man
3. Matchstick Man
4. Drover's Road
5. Floating Away

In truth - the only songs I wouldn't consider for this are: Dancefloor; GOYS; Nobody Does That; Nobody's Child; and Every Heart in the Room. So at the moment I have 14 out of 19 songs competing for a top 5.
Title: Re: TOP FIVE!!!
Post by: Nick14 on November 16, 2018, 01:17:39 PM
Ok - I like Rear View Mirror but it isn't a contender for the Top 5.

If we can include any of the 19 songs - then Sky and Water would be a contender - and probably be in my Top 5 - it is right up my street! If anyone gets that in better quality a DM would be very greatly received!

Not super-impressed with the album so far, seems to be on par with Tracker. Some songs are bound to grow on me though. As of now my top five are:

Nobodys child
Drovers road
When you leave
One song at a time
Matchstick man

If anyone has a link to hear the bonus tracks (Don't Suck Me In, Sky And Water, Pale Imitation?) that would be very welcome. :)

This is near impossible but i'll give it a go!

1) Trapper Man
2) One Song At A Time
3) Drovers Road
4) Good On You Son
5) Back On The Dance Floor

This changes depending on the time of day  ;D

It‘s a beautiful album and, as others said, almost impossible to choose a top 5. Who would have thought that after an album like tracker we get an album which has a huge diversity of styles and - what I like very much- is full of guitar solos!

-One song at a time
-drovers road
-when you leave
-nobodys child
-back on the dancefloor

no real skipper for me

I'll put this here as this is the only thread about the album as a whole, rather than individual songs, that I could find...

I got the deluxe version today, had previously only listened to the two "singles".  I had very high hopes, based on the very enthusiastic early comments on here, as well as the mostly very favorable reviews.

I "just by coincidence" had scheduled a two hour + trip by car for work today, which gave me the chance to listen undisturbed.

My initial reaction, after listening to most of the album twice, is "meh".  It's not what I was expecting, and I don't really get the unbridled enthusiasm everyone else has for it.  I'm glad everyone likes it, but I'm really kind of let down.

I like the freshness of it, it's certainly different from anything else he's done, and there are some nice grooves, so I found myself tapping along to several songs, but to me, most of the songs just aren't that good.  I would have to say, at this point (maybe/hopefully it will grow on me) I like Tracker better.

So getting to the actual topic of the thread, my top 5 after just a couple listens are:

1.  Back On the Dance Floor
2.  Trapper Man
3.  Good On You Son
4.  Heavy Up
5.  One Song at a Time or My Bacon Roll, not sure

Sorry to be a downer.

I feel like One Song at a Time may grow on me.  It has a Done With Bonaparte feel to it, and I really like that song.

Lol, that's about right. I really don't like MK doing the jazzy lounge-singer type stuff. I don't like A Place Where We Used to Live or Hard Shoulder either. I like that style when, say, Norah Jones does it, but not Mark.

It's not that I only like uptempo, rock songs either. Basil, for example, is one of my favorite tunes on Tracker.

Ive had one day with the album and there are a few instant hits, some I know will be growers and some I know I’ll never get on with. A nice strong album overall though. More importantly for me though after 30 years of finding solace in his voice through his music these new songs are like having therapy. All my mundane daily stresses seem to disappear when listening to MK. Only problem is that makes me a terrible reviewer of his music.

I'm not a big fan of Slow Learner cause of it not having a great melody, but I'm in almost exact agreement w/ your top 5.  I will also agree that the production on One Song at a Time is not good and pretty weird to be honest.  It's a GREAT song by Mark, but if they made the celtic part louder in the mix ala Border Reviere, it would be a top five favorite by MK.  Instead it's just a good track on this album.  Still don't understand why they made the production so weird.

I am also disappointed by the album. Too less dominant guitar on it. No markable solos. Dont like the way MK sings on lots of songs. He is not a singer, but a brilliant guitarist. Miss the guitar driven songs like in the past and the licks that give me goosebumps (apart from back on the dancefloor). Few songs on that album sound identical with the same mood and instrumentation. For me there is no OES feel  throughout the album (beside the 2 singles) like someone wrote.
But nevertheless, there are few brilliant songs that I will love forever and listen again and again. They would sound great live.
My top 5:

1.Back on the dancefloor (DS feel!)
2.Good on you son (very innovative, thats how the whole album should sound. Old and new mixed together.
3. Nobodys child (the lead guitar reminds me of back to tupelo)
4. Dont suck me in (wow, a twiddly bit, great!)
5. Trapper man (a bit darling pretty structure in it)

Heavy Up....I hate it. Drover's Road is near to Mighty Man which is the only song I don't like on Tracker.
Maybe My Bacon Roll and Every Heart in the Room.

I love Nobody's Child, for me one the greatest songs since 2007.

When you leave
One song at a time
Matchstick man
Every heart in the room

Other contenders:
Slow learner
Drovers road
Nobody’s child

I really have a huge problem: my number 1-5 is now One song at the time.
I do love some other songs, but I listen to One song at the time, another song, again One Song at the time etc.

But a happy listener anyway  :D

I can only pick 5?

Haven’t heard the bonus songs yet, but as it stands and subject to change as songs grow on me...

One Song at a Time
Drovers’ Road
My Bacon Roll
Trapper Man
Back on the Dancefloor

I do like Good on you Son.  But I’ve probably ‘over-listened’ to it whilst waiting for the rest of the album

Nobody's Child is my current fave, nice voice, cool rythm by Mark and of course Lead Guitar on the LP
Love it, and it is the Title which reminds me of the Cover...

Runners up

Back on the Dance Floor
One Song at a Time
Drover's Road
Heavy up

...ah and of course I love Don't suck me in.
Waiting for an official Download somewhere

Oh dear, I gave it a few listens but it's still hard. So far my top five is following:

1 Don't suck me in (so I'm glad I bought the deluxe-box-stuff-thing-whatever-box it's called)
2 One song at a time
3 Nobody's child
4 Drover's road
5 Good on you son

More importantly for me though after 30 years of finding solace in his voice through his music these new songs are like having therapy. All my mundane daily stresses seem to disappear when listening to MK.

Some of the most beautiful words ever said here.
I feel the same.

So, so true..!

I've taken a while to think about this and all the hysteria over the new album to settle and here's what I've come up with:

1. One song at a time
2. My bacon roll
3. Don't suck me in
4. Sky and water
5. Trapper man

Really love all three bonus songs and I'm almost angry they weren't in the album.  Why Mark, why? ???

After a week of endless listening I think I can finally come up with my ultimate Top 5:

1. Back on the Dance Floor
2. Drovers' Road
3. One Song at a Time
4. Trapper Man
5. Nobody's Child

I only considered songs from the regular album. That all being said, I really like every song apart from Heavy Up.

alright, my 2 cents (in random order) :

1 Every heart in the room
2 Nobody's child
3 When you leave
4 My bacon roll ( who would've thought ;-)
5 Slow learner

I just feel those Bacharach-style songs he came up with fit more with his current style and age than trying to make groove songs a la GOYS. Ah well, different strokes...

2.slow learner - same as the above.
3. every heart...do not totally dislike it, but does not "buzz" me.

My Top 5 may vary but the ones I prefer by now :
1. My Bacon Roll : beautiful melody, beautiful guitar solo and the end reminds me Why Worry (in shorter) and could be like Hill Farmer Blues or Kingdom Of Gold when played live
2. Nobody's Child : beautiful singing by Mark and delicate guitar solo. Simply marvelous
3. One Song At A Time : great melody, it should replace Marbletown in an extended version during the future tour
4. Nobody Does That : Impressive how Mark becomes a jazzman. I always imagine a live version of the song. The live potential is important for me. I don't see Mark playing Slow Learner in big venues like the 02 or Bercy. But Nobody Does That, yes, it would be great !
5. Good On You Son : Funky song , percussions, sax... everything is OK to be a great song in concert !

My thoughts exactly on WYL. Does not matter to me whether you have guitar or not, it would have bothered me of course if there was no guitar on the album, but you get plenty of guitar on other songs, so this one is a good addition.
I'm very pleased with the album, to see our man is still able to invent new valuable music turning 70... OSAAT is a real masterpiece. Besides that I think I love every song, except:
-Trapper Man. I know you guys love it, but it does nothing on me. Just like Darling Pretty...
-JABAFH: Can't bring myself to love this slide guitar, always hated Donegan...
-Nobody does that: just too much "Captain Future" sound effects !
-Every Heart in the Room: too cheesy for my taste, same as Wherever I go
-Rear View Mirror: short and so so...

I love every single other song, even Heavy Up (very fresh). WYL,  Floating Away, and Slow Learner are slow, but very good, it is nice to have slow songs in the middle. I came to like GOYS and BOTDF a lotw after initial reluctance. My Bacon roll is just brillant.
Agree with others that Don't suck me in is brillant too and should have been included in the main album. Can't take all this "bonus songs" childishness anyway, there just should be one big set for all editions, period.

These bonus tracks can't make anyone buy different editions. If anything, it only pushes people to get all the songs "the other way" and you know what it is.

But according to almighty Guy it's Mark who decides all the bonus tracks. And I think it's a good chance for him to throw out songs like Hear Of Oak, which is only 1.5 minutes long, to later resurrect it on the main album with Matchstick Man. Or to do the same with recycling Terminal Of Tribute and revamping it into Back On The Dance Floor. And nobody can blame him for doing that, because it was a bonus track anyway, only die-hards know about it! :lol

According to the FAZ interview that Skydiver provided this morning, Mark let these things completely decide the Company as it's Business and he doesn't care about business as it has nothing to do with music. He described it as being concerned about having recorded too many songs and they say No it's ok we can use them for deluxe content.

I remember him telling in 2004 or 2007 already that he doesn't remind if the track was on the album or not.
It seems he has other priorities than us.

I find this very strange
how an artist can't be bothered by which songs are on his regular album or not ?

I mean it's not just a bucnh of songs, and then let the company do what they want ...

you produce an album, you should be concerned by all what is coming aorund it : the packaging, the songs order, the number of songs, etc...

I recall when Shangri-La came out they were very surprised "Summer Of Love" wasn't in the record, so it can be true.

Someone near MK told me once that MK just delivered the tracks to the record company and the record company decides which tracks are included and what tracks not. It sounded strange to me but, who knows...

I find this way of doing very very strange
but nevermind, I put all tracks on my Sony player, and will mostly never listen to the CD again anyway, so it's not a problem for me. I consider the album with all tracks (I do the same for all albums : for example when I listen to OES, the playlist goes on with MB and KC juste after how long), no distinction between official/bonus

But it's very very strange that he is doing like this

After living with the album for a while now - I like everything on it bar my now regular skippers - which are Dance Floor, GOYS, Nobody Does That, Rear View Mirror - balancing that is that I love all the extra tracks - superb. A top 5 is still tough - especially if picking from the 19. Hard to exclude any of the three bonus songs....but then with One Song, Trapper, Matchstick, Just a Boy, Bacon Roll etc etc...it gets really tough.

Well, the top 3 for me is actually easy

Trapper Man (It's just my cup of the song  :clap in so many ways)
Don't Suck Me In (That old DS vibe)
One Song At A Time (That Mark new-solo vibe, at his best)

But from now on i'd be struggling between; Drovers' Road, Nobody's Child, Back On The Dance Floor, Good On You Son, Matchstick Man, When You Leave, Slow Learner, Floating Away (love the KTGC-rimsony atmosphere on that one!)... so there they are, in no particular order, depending on the mood etc... :think

After many many listens ...

1. Trapper Man
2. Back on the Dance Floor
3. My Bacon Roll
4. Good on you son
5. Matchstick Man

I also really like Heavy up .. very cool vibe for Mark. I also love the bonus tracks but haven't listened to them enough to know where to put them yet :)

If Mark placed Beryl, Basil and Laughs and Jokes on DTRW and replaced Floating Away, Nobody does that and When you leave
the album would have been a real Killer thing

No, no... it's a joke.
From DTRW i can listen only these 4 songs.
So i included Terminal as a joke.

DTRW, for me, its the worst MK album ever.
The album has great engeneering, great guitar... but i dont like the songs and dont like the arranjements.

Sorry my poor english.

Don't apologise.  Sorry you don't like the new album - hopefully it's not a slow learner but a "slow grower."  ;)

If I had to take one song from MK to my desert island it would not be from any of his last 5 albums at the very least. Golden Heart and Sailing to Philadelphia would be the two finalists. With Shangri La maybe challenging. Unfortunately what we are being presented with is MKs favourites and not what 'we' the public/his fans' are expecting. Its no good singing to an audience one of your favourite songs if we, the audience would rather hear something else.
Ask 9 out of 10 MK fans what they would want to hear and the majority (who have followed him since1978) would welcome any DS song as opposed to something from his last few albums. Its the nature of the beast. If you cant better DS then why expect fans to expect anything less?

It makes sense for him to sing his favourite song, with a few added big songs. Why would he get up and play songs he doesn't like? would any artist do that? how can he please all the fans? it's impossible, we all like different songs, a song I would say is amazing, someone else would say they really don't like it, nothing unusual in that. Songwriters move on, I remember Roger Waters saying on the radio in the mid 80's "If someone said to me, Right, here's a million dollars, go out and perform Atom Heart Mother. I'd say, you must be f...ing joking!!"

The first concert I ever went to was Pink Floyd at Earl's Court, London, it was my present to myself for my 21st birthday on 19th October, but I went to the concert the day after, as I couldn't get a ticket for the day of my birthday, still the best concert I have ever been to, musically and as a spectacle. I also went to see David Gilmour at the Meltdown Festival in 2001.

Aaah the meltdown show, noice. Got that on dvd. I saw the waterless Floyd in 1994 in Belgium, then waters in Germany for his first wall tour, then once more in Belgium for his second, saw Gilmour live on Oberhausen 2015 and live in Belgium in 2017. Saw Mason live last year in Antwerp. All brilliant.

My top five are the ones that stayed on my i-pod:
1. Good On You Son.
2. Drovers Road.
3. One Song At A Time.
4. Trapper Man.
5. Matchstick Man.
I really dislike My Bacon Roll, so quite disappointed it's one of few songs off the album that has stayed in the set. There's a couple of songs (Just A Boy, When You leave) that are ok, but overall it doesn't come close to matching Tracker, easily my favourite solo album, for me.
