Title: Joe Satriani praises DTRW
Post by: Darling Pretty on January 06, 2019, 02:49:18 PM

One of my other Guitar heroes since 1992 Joe Satriani pointed out on Twitter that he likes the album very much

Wow, that is high praise indeed!!! I never would have thought Joe Satriani would be into Mark or his music. They have totally different styles, but I guess Joe knows a great player and songwriter when he hears one. This will be great promo for the album too :thumbsup

I'm not very fond of Satriani's music or guitar style, but I've watched some interviews with him, and he seems like a very humble and nice guy. Nothing like Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen. Quite surprised that Satriani would mention an album of Mark's on Twitter, actually.

He praised the Electric ladyland 50th anniversary edition.
I put the videos at the end of my article :

Not a surprise, it's well known that he is a Jimi fan, but as for Mark's album, yes quite surprising

Satriani's music says nothing to me but it's good he posted that. Lots of his fans don't respect guitarists who are not into guitar juggling, words like these might open their eyes a little bit.

the satch is an amazing guitar player, actually the one that thought most of the other shredders to actually play, like Kirk Hammet, Steve vai, etc..
Saw him live in 94, only recently did i manage to pick my jaw up again
the man is a monster, but with an amazing touch, unlike the shredders.
i liked, commented and retweeted. we should all. wonder if mark heard about this.
will leave this here...prolly my favourite live song (on the Time machine live recording it is even better)

from his later work i also really like "light years away" which has an amazing soulful solo roundabout 05:04 into the song.
@Border_reiver: i do not get it...whose friendship? Marks or Joe's? andi f Mark, what does that have to do with Joe?

It was just a poor joke. Sonny and Joe have collaborated in recent years and it was just my loony opinion that Sonny therefore must have introduced Joe to MKs music. I would never imagine that someone who plays JS's style of music could be into MKs music.

Irony is tough. Bad jokes even more so. Please forgive me. ;D

I am sure every world class guitarists knows who Mark is, they would have all heard and loved Sultans of Swing, and in the 80's Mark was everywhere and Dire Straits were huge. I am not into shred music at all, mostly because there is no emotion and feeling in it, but there are a few tracks I like from Joe Satriani:

Tears in the Rain - An acoustic/classical guitar piece.
Always With Me, Always With You - Good guitar sound and good melody
Flying In A Blue Dream - As above

But even with the last two above he can't resist going a bit mad in the middle of it!!!

Saying all that Mike Oldfield is in my opinion the greatest composer and player of instrumental music.

I think that is wrong. Just because shredders play fast, loud and at a very high technical level doesn't mean they don't put any feeling in it. It's just a very different approach than minimalistic players, such as Mark, have. Look at jazz - some like frenetic, wild bebop, others like the more subdued, minimalistic modal jazz. It all comes down to preference, and there are 'bad' shredders who only play technical exercises, and there are 'bad' minimalistic players. And God knows Mark has played his share of half-hearted, lazy licks where he's just going through the motions, relying on muscle memory. The riff and solo in Nobody Does That comes to mind.

I have never heard any shredders who can touch Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour, Mike Oldfield for feel.

Again, I think it says more about your preferences than anything else. For the record, I don't like shred music at all, but I refuse to believe every shredder only cares about playing 'scale exercises' at 300 bpm. A guy like Steve Vai, for example, whose style and persona I am not very sympathetic to, it's clear he puts his heart into his playing. It doesn't move me one bit, but that's just because of my preferences.

Joe Satriani was the guitar player for Deep Purple when Ritchie Blackmore definitely left the band in the 90's, before Steve Morse joined the band.

Satriani is far more than a runner, he's very good creating melodies for his songs, it's not just running, it's playing something meaninful.

I totally understand that Satriani likes MK music, he's a musician after all.

Joe is the David Gilmour of the shred universe.
This guy emerge from the 70's/80's Hard Rock, it's obvious that he would be a shredder. But he has great melodies and great songs.
He is a musician, not simply a shredder.

His best album, in my opinion, is Joe Satriani from 1996.
It's a killer album.

I agree.

It is a Killer album.

Drums: Manu Katche (on every Street)
Rythm Guitar: Andy Fairweather Low (Eric Clapton)
Bass: Nathan East ( Eric Clapton)
Lead Guitar: Joe Satriani. That's what I call a Top Notch Band.
Extremely cool songs and Live Sound on this Album. I love it

Does everybody retweeted Satch's Tweet or liked it?

I have listened to some of Joe's albums now, and I think he's a very melodic player. Not just endless, fast runs and scales. My biggest gripe perhaps is the production and his guitar sound. There's the general 'slick' studio sound, and his guitar is very distorted with lots of delay. Would love to hear him with a more organic setup and a more vintage, less distorted guitar sound.

Although Joe Satriani is not my 'type of artist', I still prefer him over for example Joe Bonamassa. Satriani's style is kind of true to his genre, whereas Bonamassa goes into shred mode when playing regular blues songs.

Bonamassa is a great player, but plays the same lick on every song.
He is a very nice chap, but i cannot listen 20min of his songs.

Agree. Extremely good guitarist, great tone and gear, but he just can't restrain himself. I've heard several songs where the solo is really controlled and with lots of feeling, then suddenly he has to throw in those extremely fast runs and use heavy-metal-style vibrato. So irritating. He also doesn't have a lot of good songs, in my opinion, but there's no doubt he's a very good guitarist.

Totally agree.  It takes a great skill and talent to know not to play 10 notes when one will suffice.

I downloaded Joe Bonamassa's concert from the RAH 2009.  I enjoyed it up to a point, but then it became so boring - everything began to sound the same!    I have tried a few times, but I'm afraid he is just not for me.  John Henry and Sloe Gin were the best songs.

Joe's best album, for me, is the 'British Blues Explosion'.
The '3 Kings' concert is very good too.

He does some great covers, but i tend to dislike his original material.

Blues of Desperation is his best album.
His Band features Michael Rhodes from Golden Heart on Bass, Anton Fig on Drums and Reese Wynans from Stevie Ray Vaughan on Keys
so a Killer Live Band. It is the best Band around just after Mark's. That is for sure.

Between Bonamassa and Satriani I’d take the first italian for sure. I’ve tried to like Satriani, I even bought the silver surfer album about 20 years ago, but every time he starts to throw meaningless notes and noises in the air it turns me off so badly I just feel like listening to Brothers in Arms again for the 2.497th time.

So cool that Satriani likes the sound of the new album. No wonder though!  ;D  Now, maybe, he should tell us his thoughts about the previous albums...  ;)
As for guitar players, I like so many from classical music to jazz and pop to metal, maybe for different reasons, but all in all because they make the song or music piece better or even unique.
