Title: Local Hero Musical - The Official Release
Post by: jbaent on March 13, 2019, 01:16:09 PM
I asked Guy about the release of the cast cd of the musical and this is what Guy asnwered me:

It won’t be released in conjunction with this run. It will most likely be associated with the London run in 2020 but there are no dates as I haven’t started recording it yet. (I’m not including the demo’s we did)

So the musical, even the cast version, won't be released until summer next year...

That means that people attending will be the only ones who will listen to the MK songs, unless people attending record the perfomances and share them with the rest of fans, as we use to do with concerts...

In early April I will bring with me my digital recorder and will try it. I hope the rest of people attending do the same with their, if possible, of course.

Interesting answer.
The last two sentences of Guy's answer indicate that Guy is making a cast recording.
Which could mean, that it won't be a MK recording.

it is to be feared these precious demos end up in the graveyard and we end up listening to cast recordings with another guitarist…
Just imagine the original soundtrack of Local Hero with another guitarist...

It is unimaginable!    ::)     I was really hoping for a studio recording with MK and band with guests, such as Karen Matheson.  Was it really too much to hope for?   :think

If a cast album will be released to coincide with London 2020 shows... Imagine when an album with mk and his musicians would be released, if it is...

These recordings will be in the same scrapyard as the Madrid 2001 recordings etc etc never to be seen again I'll bet.

On a positive note, I just watched the Scottish local news and there was an article about the musical with a couple of snippets of music.  Did a quick search of STV News but nothing there yet online.

"I think that the most of us here are praying for the new Local Hero album containing the new songs sung and played by Mark. Otherwise, if a "cast" album without Mark will be released at the end, why don't you consider to release also a special limited edition of the album with the MK demos on a bonus disc ?

I wonder what Guy will say

In the Old Vic page for the Local Hero musical there are two snippets of two of the songs of the film

https://www.oldvictheatre.com/whats-on/2020/local-hero

HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM

https://soundcloud.com/oldvictheatre/houston-from-local-hero-30-sec?in=oldvictheatre/sets/local-hero

GOING HOME
https://soundcloud.com/oldvictheatre/going-home-main-theme-from?in=oldvictheatre/sets/local-hero

I only listened to it at work with a bad speaker so I cannot say if it's recorded from one of the Edinburgh performances, or if it's really for the musical cast cd release!

I kind of answer myself... soundcloud says it was uploaded 8 months ago so it looks it's recorded from the Edinburgh performances or during the rehearsals for the Edinburgh run  :hmm

I asked Guy today about the Local Hero musical because he mentioned "Local Hero soundtrack, TBA" and this is what he answered:

Q: Local Hero soundtrack. TBA? I guess you mean the musical soundtrack, isn’t it? We are so very much looking forward to having that wonderful songs in our players…

A: Soundtrack and stage musical.  I cannot say anything about these right now so…stay tuned.

I don't really know what he means with this, as far as we know the idea was to release a cast cd with the actors of the musical singing and maybe the musicians that play in the musical, or maybe the original versions of the songs they recorded but with the cast voices... We know that MK and other singers (like Karen Matheson) recorded demos for the musical, so... maybe Guy means there is going to be two releases, one from the cast, and one from what they recorded with MK, Karen etc etc?

Or maybe he just mean news regarding the cast cd and the come back to the Old Vic...

Too excited to fully understand, LOL

Maybe one CD with the singers and musicians from the stage performance, a cast recording, and another one with Mark and his musicians?

I personally doubt there'll be two different recordings; demand won't be sufficient for this.

Sting did pretty much the same, he released his album The Last Ship, and also, separately, they released an album with cast recording for the musical. I think Mark's album will be filled with songs like "It's Oly Rocks and Water" sung by various artists and the cast recording is just the recording of an actual event.

They will package it with the half speed remaster for an inflated price and call it super deluxe.
It will probably be the only "super deluxe" MK ever releases :thumbsdown

According to last Guy's comment in his forum, I'd say that this is a cancelation in the Old Vic because they can't host the musical. The way he says makes me think there is hope that it will be represented in other theater.

Actually he said that we will have news regarding the musical, about the stage representation and the record... So let's be positive!

I’ve not had any communication from the Old Vic, though I’ve been sitting on a pair of expensive tickets for a very long time. Has anyone received refunds, or info on refunds? This sounds like a huge shame, but hopefully a phoenix will arise from the ashes. I’m feeling very glad I met the trip up to Edinburgh to see it twice!

I got an email and could opt for a refund. As the credit card I used for booking expired I had to call them with the new details last week. But haven´t checked if the money was booked back to the credit card yet.
I think you could just call and ask.

I didn't had my refund yet, and asked for it almost a month ago. I guess they have a lot of work refunded all the tickets so I'll wait paciently.

I can't wait to hear to which theatre, if they found any, they are moving the musical. I read somewhere that in the London's West End there are almost 40 theaters so I hope they have luck and found a spot in one of them, specially because it looks like the release of a cd depend on it.

LH is a rather charming and intimate production which calls for a smaller theatre space like in Edinburgh.
I think that's why they opted for the Old Vic.

The Old Vic in London has a capacity of 1.067 people, and the Lyceum in Edinburgh has 658 seats.

Most of the West End theaters have a capacity similar to the Lyceum and a lot of are bigger than the Old Vic:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_End_theatre#List_of_West_End_theatres

They have the numbers of tickets sold for the Old Vic which could be a guide to which of those theaters, thinking in their capacity, would suit better. Unless the only important thing should be availability, which is the most important, of course!

Anyway, I really can't wait for news about it! The Old Vic already revealed his programme for season 2021/2022 and thinking that the Royal Albert Hall said that in July they would be allowed to open for acts at full capacity, I guess that all theaters would reveal soon their upcomings seasons.

In fairness, once I’d found the spammed email, I had a refund quickly. The helpful box office guy also indicated that it was possible that it might be put on at the Old Vic in a year or two, but social distancing made a musical impractical in the near future.

What I understood from Guy is that the company is looking for another theater, actually if you look at the schedule of other theaters right now, there are some musicals scheduled to happen this year:

I had hopes that a musical reschedule was already fixed and they would come up with alternative new dates once the Old Vic would announce the cancellation.
I had these hopes because of MK usually beeing busy with other future projects (hopefully another tour...).
Also, what might be something to look forward to is that for both the Edinburgh and the London dates the presales started many many months ahead. Maybe we get some news before the end of this year.

They will have sunk millions into creating this musical, they will want to recoup their investment, believe me.

The Old Vic already announced the cancellation to the buyers. I don't think they would do a further anouncement.

In the other side, Guy said some weeks ago that news regarding the musical and the cd were TBA. My guess is that they already have other venue and they are waiting to the theaters to announce their new season. The Old Vic already did that.

Just had a call from the Old Vic to arrange the refund and they said to me the same, that maybe in a year or two they can have Local hero at the Old Vic because of the restrictions blah blah blah

I don't think the musical can wait until next season (2022-2023) as Dusty said, they invested a lot of money on it and that's too long wait not for us fans but for them. I'm sure they are searching or already have an alternative venue for this upcoming season.  I guess they need to recover part of their investment as soon as possible and can't wait until the Old Vic has availability.
