Yeah, I have an interview where he says they used to have a little holiday cottage somewhere in Northumberland that was a run down place. Maybe that's what it is.

Yes, dusty, I read the story of the little cottage in Northumberland, I have looked everywhere for it, but can't find the clip anywhere now, perhaps you can jog my memory!   ;D   Anyway, I'm sure that's what the song is about.   :)

Thought I'd just copy and paste the lyrics from "So Far From The Clyde" over to this thread... Thanks to Wolfgang for some additions; there are still some words missing or wrong so maybe one of you native speakers could help us out.

So Far From The Clyde

They had a last supper
The day of the Beaching
She's a dead ship sailing
Skeleton Crew
The galley is empty
The stove pots are cooling
With what's left of the stew

The time is approaching
The captain moves over
The hangman steps in
To do what he's paid for
With the wind down the tide
She goes proud ahead steaming
And he drives her hard into the shore

So far from the Clyde
Together we ride
We did ride

As if to a wave
From her bows to her rudder
Bravely she rises to meet with the land
Under their feet they all feel her keel shatter
The shallow see washes their hands

Later the captain
Shakes hands with the hangman
And climbs slowly down
To the oily wet ground
Goes 'bout(?) to the car that has come here to take him
To the graveyard and back to the town

So far from the Clyde
Together we ride
We did ride

They pull out her cables
And hack off her hatches
Too poor to be wasteful with pity or time
They swarm on her carcass with torches and axes
Like a whale on the bloody shoreline
Stripped of her pillars
Her stays and her stantions
When there's only her bones on the wet poison land
Steel ropes will drag her with winches and engines
'Til it's only a stain on the sand

So far from the Clyde
Together we ride
We did ride

---

I really think these lyrics are fantastic, maybe some of MK's best. Awesome. Never thought I could feel sorry for an old ship... He almost makes it appear - human. Somehow the whole act of dismantling and "dying" of the vessel - at least in my view - is a metaphor for the end of life. Am I exaggerating or does someone agree with me?

Remembrance Day

On your maypole green
See the winding morrismen
Angry Alfie, Bill and Ken
Waving hankies, sticks and ?
All the earthen roofs

Standing at the crease
The batsman takes a look around
The boys are fielding on homeground
The steeple sharp against the blue
When I think of you

Sam and Andy
Jack and John
Charlie, Martin
Jamie, Ron
Harry, Stephen
Will and Don
Matthew, Michael
On and on

We will remember them, etc....

Time has slipped away
The Summer sky to Autumn yields
A haze of smoke across the fields
Let's sup and fight another round
And walk the stubbled ground

When November brings
The poppies on Remembrance Day
When the vicar comes to say
May God bless them every  one
Lest we forget our sons

We will remember them, etc...

Hard Shoulder

I've got latches for windows
handles for doors
grinders and scrapers
and sanders for floors

rake for the gravel
chains for the snow
always got the shovel
you never know

I never thought you'd go

man's broken down
man's broken down
on the slip road
got a slip load
and it's a hard shoulder
to cry on

hacksaws and hammers
brushes and mop
and I've got the ladders
up on the top

if something needs doing
I always say
you want it done
the proper way

I need you to stay

man's broken down
man's broken down
on the slip road
got a slip load
and it's a hard shoulder
to cry on

give me a minute
we'll be going again
sound as a bell
right as rain
right as rain

and it's a hard shoulder
to cry on
to cry on

I find "So Far From the Clyde" a really sad song.   It feels like the captain had a very close relationship with the ship and it is almost as though he is taking a much-loved dog to the vet to be put down.  I know how that feels.  :'(

I think another missing word from this song is "goes back to the car..."

"Steel ropes will drag her..."

"Stripped of her pillars, her stays and her stantions"

Before Gas & TV

Before gas and tv
before people had cars
we'd sit around the fires
pass around our guitars

Remembering songs
when my daddy was home
he'd play along
on the spoons and a comb

We'd go with the flow
when the weather was fine
sometimes we'd go
collecting scrap iron

And we'd sit around the fires
pass a bottle of wine
in the tales of the road
since time out of mind

If heaven's like this
well that's OK with me
where the living is fine
and living is free

If heaven's like this
well then here's where I'll be
on the edge of the field
on the edge of the world
before gas and tv.

In England we have morris dancers who dance around a maypole, which has coloured ribbons hanging from the top and the morrismen, or other folk also, hold the ends of the ribbons and twist and weave under and over, around the maypole on the village green, to music.  It happens usually on May Day, or to celebrate Midsummer.

I wonder if "So Far From The Clyde" refers to a concrete naval inccident. After a beaching, a ship is driven into the land willingly by a "hangman".
It would be very interesting to know WHEN and WHERE this song lyrics are set. Somehow I always think about Namibia with its skeleton coast or Patagonia or another far country. And it must be very far from the Clyde, mustn

Hi guys,

here's a partial transcript for "cleaning my gun":

I keep a weathered eye on the horizon
back to the wall
I like to know who's coming through the door
that's all
it's the old army training
kicking in
I'm not complaining
it's the world we live in
Galloni & Malarkey(???)
they're a devious firm
take it to the cleaners
and let them burn

The help is breaking dishes
in the kitchen
thanks a lot
We hired the worst dishwasher
this place ever got
in below the radar
they wanna spoil our fun
in the meantimde
I'm cleaning my gun

remember he got so cool
ice froze at the tank
he lit a fire beneath her
just so she would crank

Keep a weathered eye on the horizon
tap stone glass(???) now and then
I gotta case of old damnation
for when you get here my friend
we can have ourselves a party
before they come
in the meantime
I'm cleaning my gun

We had women and a merry ball
we had a DJ
used to eat pretty much all
paying his way
ever since the goons came in
took apart the place
I keep a tyre iron in the corner
just in case

I may need a magic bullet
on a little chain
keep us safe from the chilly winds
and out of the rain
we gonna might need bullets
should we get stuck
any which way
we're gonna need a little luck
We could still get gas in heaven
and a drink in kingdom come
in the meantime
I'm cleaning my gun

I have no clue what the song is about; A biker bar? The mafia? A family feud?
As Love Expresso says, maybe the key is the "Malarkey" firm - if we can decipher it.

Detective work is fun! Thanks for the research on "so far from the clyde"!

Sorry, I still find this story very interesting. There is this special place called Alang, in Gujarat, India, where exactly everything is happening as told in the song "So Far From The Clyde". It is cheaper for the industrial nations to wreck up their ships over there, also because of environmental reasons.
So this places boomed because of the great amount of scrap. This has a lot to do with money, much money. So the song alone for that reason fits into the context of "Get Lucky".

and

The article however is from 1998. When you use google-earth for that named location, you can see the ships and the oily beach. So I think it is still running that way, maybe even bigger than ever.

Checking in late, as usual.   Has anyone figured out 'slipped load"?    It maybe means that the load was not balanced well and on a curve or something, it slid over to one side of the truck, unbalancing it.    Or it could mean that the whole unbalanced load slipped off the truck entirely.     I've seen lots of slipped loads on hay trucks.    I hate to meet the things on curves.
Ian, the the ship in the photo here looks like the video clip you put together.   Your video adds even more poignancy to the song.   It's a heartbreaker.

:) Hi Marie. Yes I think the slipped load could be a double meaning also. The driver has been down on his luck (maybe a broken relationship?) and then I also think the "Hard shoulder" itself could also have a double meaning. Being that he has had to pull over to the shoulder of the road to try to recover his slipped load and he needs a shoulder to cry on also as a result of his two instances of bad fortune?

Maybe it is very gritty as a non native speaker but I think it has nothing to do with trucks. It is just a picture. He has stuff for every possible cases as he listes in the first lines of the lyrics. But now the holy regularity has gone down the drain and he can

Yeah, indeed.  MK really does me good this time.  Now I'm waiting for the guitar tab for this song.  Oh, one question, in the Deluxe box, we can find Guitar tab for the song Get Lucky or the Get Lucky album.  Hopefully your answer is the latter one.

Thank you for posting these lyrics, shangri-la 1. Usually b-side tracks are neglected in that matter even if they are released.

Seems clear to me that the character in Hard Shoulder is a call-out car break down man. Here in the UK we have organisations like the AA and the RAC who will come and fix your car if you break down on the road, he is one of those guys. But also his own relationship with somebody has "broken down".

The song to me is very similar to the Jimmy Webb/Glenn Campbell classic "Witchita Lineman", musically it has similarities but lyrically too it's about a working man being lonely on the job.

Man, thats a great interpretation! I think i`m one of the few that really love this song, but i know i`d have listened to it for years without making the jump to understanding!!! (which can be a good thing i guess)

The reverse of this is i`d prefer to have NOT known what Border Reiver was about. My imagination and vibe with the music would have believed it was some sort of Ode To Girl with Irish Dance, instead of truck driving!!!! :)

The tab is for the song Get Lucky, not for the whole album... :)
