Even though there are a couple of weeks left until I'll attend this tour for real, still excited for each new concert at the moment too see eventual small changes to the set. Hopefully Silvertown stays now after making it's way back... Then we just need TR back and the set is really really great  8)

Here's an idea.

Why don't we each compile a list of 20 of our least favourite Knopfler songs. Wish for those to be played at the upcoming concerts and then none of us will leave disappointed ;)

In the meantime unless Mark decides to play his entire back catalogue using Kazoo and Jew's harp, I'll be satisfied with whatever material he chooses to perform...

I doubt very much these are the setlist we are finding here.  They are printed off just after soundcheck or before the gig for the band.  It has just been coincidence and due to the static setlist that they have been correct.  These lists are probably just copied from the previous night.  Will likely still be correct mind you!

I know what you mean but there must be a clause in the small print where Mark reserves the right to change the set since the concert hasn't even started yet.  I mean anything could happen - Mark may not be able to perform and then there would be no concert at all.  That would be a whopper of a lie!

I wonder when the setlist is made up.  I believe i’ve read in Guy’s diary once on a flight back after a concert they dicided to add a few changes for the next concert. So this could mean setlist is made a day before the concert. And last minute changes is not something likely for MK. He’s not Springsteen  ;D

In one of the  2011 shows I stood next to the soundboard and the FOH man was busy on the phone and making several alterations with a pen on the laid out set list.. It was 10 minutes prior to the show.. Oh did I mention that it was during the break and therefore of course Bob's set that had been changed in that minute?

That would never happen in a MK concert. Sets written  on stone are heavy to change.

On the last tour of U2 it was a default that the songs played appeared on U2.com beforehand the concert would start due to the teleprompter. The crew had to load the lyrics to every song they were going to play that night into the telepromper for Bono. The teleprompter was connected to the software for the site, resulting the site was updated as soon as they uploaded the lyrics  :smack :smack :smack

I'm glad I went to the concert - in 2015 I was utterly disappointed but after I read about the changes to the setlist I decided to go there.

The concert was much better than last time - maybe I went with a different mindset: keeping in mind that this could have been probably the last regular MK concert and I also didn't have the expectations like in former years when I wanted to see the guitar hero of my youth - of course there have been some moments, sparks I'd say, but all in all there's a reason why there are so many other musicians. A long way from the four-piece-band of the early days...but it's okay.

The concert was not the best concert of my entire life - but it was very decent.
The sound was bad as always in this crappy arena. When he talked it was bearly audible - but I think he didn't say good-bye.

I can live with TR gone, I really enjoyed OUATITW and Silvertown Blues.

BTW: although the overall sound was subpar - the guitars sounded astonishingly good, maybe even better than during the last tours.
I don't think the Kemper amps sounded bad at all, maybe it is even an improvement because these devices are easier to mic and mix - and therefore contribute to a more balanced sound?

Looks like the good ol' autopilot has landed and is ready to lock and roll...

Again, most people don't go to more than one show, so if the current set is working for Mark and provides him with a framework where he can feel relaxed and perform his best, then I don't see the problem.

A static set within the same tour must be perfectly acceptable. Almost identical sets from tour to tour, though, that is a whole different issue.

It’s shocking to me that Mark can spend 6 months finding the right sound for his Kemper amp, but only take a couple of weeks for tour rehearsal and then tries new things on the fly or on sound checks. If you rehearse for two weeks no wonder we have two new songs and autopilot. Again, 6 months for amp, 3 weeks for rehearsals.

Rehearsal needs the band, room and stage and a lot of things to organize. Checking Kemper can be done "by the way" whenever there is some spare time left.

It doesn‘t mean they were 6 months in the studio 8 hours a day. It simply means they profiled in the period o the last 6 months. MK had a lot of other things to do like the musical etc. They weren‘t working full 6 months

Also Paul Heaton from The Beautiful South has done since the start of his career, and he wrote most of the songs.

As for a static set list, I am not in the lightest bothered by it, my view is, that it's an honour to sit in front of Mark when he plays live, whatever song he plays. All the people who went to see Roger Waters perform The Wall got the same thing every night, and no-one complained. I know it is an album, but you get my point ;) Though you could say they got a bonus as it included two songs not on the original album, What Shall We Do Now, and The Last Few Bricks.

As far as I am aware, Mark doesn't promise to play any specific song, so if he changes it every night, or keeps it the same, people shouldn't be surprised or disappointed. With The Wall, you know the set list before attending every show, so again you shouldn't be surprised or disappointed. Just my view, I could be wrong. :-\

Is Mark really using a teleprompter for the lyrics? ???  :hmm

Many bands of these days do it. Saw it by Gilmour, Waters, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and U2 for instance
Bruce Springsteen has been using it for years.

You bet he needs that telepromter, good luck remembering the lyrics of "Heart Full Of Holes"  ;D

Good job he's not performing 'True Love Will Never Fade'. he might get confused and think the teleprompter has got stuck  ;)

I have seen 4 shows of his "Us and Them" tour, and the setlist was as static as MK 2019. A small change once in while, period.

But apart from the 16 song setlist MK has, Bruce has like 30 songs per show plus he takes requests from the audience plus he constantly shakes the setlists up.
 ;D ::)

Hi everyone, I'm back home and can use a proper keyboard for typing again so I thought I'd share some of my thoughts about the Berlin show.

First of all, this must have been the first MK concert where I haven't seen one single familiar face. I've been following MK and attended his concerts since STP and have always met one or two fellow fans. Where was everybody? Felt strange to enjoy my post show drink alone. Probably the ticket prices are just too high this time so people attend less shows...?

As for the concert, I was a very happy fan afterwards. I expected the worst after reading some of the reviews from the shows in Spain but I thought Berlin was a great show. MK's playing seemed to be less sloppy than it was during the 2008 tour where, even as a non-guitar expert, you sort of always had the feeling he would hit a wrong note. I liked the "brassies", they enhance his songs, although I thought he often uses them to fill in the gaps were a guitar solo is missing. Anyway I was surprised I liked the sound, I was sceptical first because I've never been a fan of too much saxofone in MK's songs (I can't stand that overloaded version of R&J on On the Night). They do make the entire concert musically more interesting. Isn't this what we've been waiting for all those years? My personal highlight was Silvertown Blues, man, it really blew me away. A live version has LONG been overdue. Also great to hear Going Home played with the Les Paul. Prefer it a lot to the Schecter. Much rockier, richer sound. Matchstick Man was very touching. I liked the different drum beat on Bonaparte. Bacon Roll was a bit of a downer and got only very polite reactions. Still surprised he dug out MfN again, thought he hated it. Didn't miss Sultans or TR, heard them live plenty of times. Wouldn't have minded if he switched R&J and BiA with either two new songs or some old forgotten classics (I was just listening to Planet of New Orleans today and thought it would be so awesome to hear this live - well, a girl can dream, right?).

Speedway still works live, it has that special energy. I wasn't really sure when the stage rushing was going to start so I think I was the one initiating it. I was so excited I tripped, I think it was visible from the stage, LOL.

Seeing MK up close I thought he has really aged a lot since the last tour. Still, I'm not so sure if this will really be his last time around. Before Bacon Roll he said the first time he was in Berlin he was a young dude, now he's an old man and should retire. He really said that in German, Ich sollte in Rente gehen. But he also said he loves music so much, and rhetorically asked what to do. "I think I just play", was his answer to his own question. Then some drunk fanboy yelled "Don't stop til you're in the grave."  ::)

Well I don't know, he probably won't do big tours anymore... But that's okay. I've seen him so many times and met so many great people along the way - I'm just very thankful for all of that. But we'll see.

Oh btw, someone mentioned the sound and that it sucked. Well, I thought it was pretty good. I know venues that really are an acoustic nightmare - the Festhalle AND the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt for example  :disbelief The Mercedes Benz arena is one of the better halls IMO. By the way, the area around the arena surely has changed a lot. I saw Roger Waters there about a year ago and correct me if I'm wrong but I think those illuminated futuristic water fountains and all those restaurants at the "Mercedes Benz Platz" weren't there back then. Oh, Berlin is one big construction site and constantly changing - not to the best. Too many hotels, too many tourists. I spared myself the typical sightseeing spots this time and made a nice excursion to Potsdam instead. Now I'm back home, still have a few days off and time to proceed my experience. Looking forward to seeing MK one more time in Mannheim - and hopefully some familiar faces.

Thanks for your great review GoldenHeart.  I'm glad you enjoyed your show in Berlin - Mark seems to be getting into the swing of things about now.  I'm still unhappy about Speedway being a poor finale to the show but we can't have everything we want in life!

P.S.  Planet of New Orleans would most certainly be welcomed!  Yes please!  :P

Many thanks for your review Goldenheart.   It's good to hear from you again and I'm glad that you enjoyed the show.  It's my turn today in Leeds and tomorrow in Newcastle and I'm really looking forward to seeing MK again!   :)

Thanks for the review gaoldenheart96 I'm glad you enjoyed it. Personally I like the Romeo & Juliet from On The Night, and it is mainly because of Chris White's work, I think he is the best Brass instrument player Mark has ever worked with, I know thinks a lot of his current players, but for me Chris is the man.

I agree with the observation that Mark has aged since the last tour, he is looking like an old man now, which is not surprising given his age, but at least he has aged better than the members of The Rolling Stones, who have always looked like old men!!!

I guess that was me who complained about the sound. I've been in this arena about ten times and it was always bad or very bad. The only concert I liked the sound was last year (Jeff Lynne's ELO).
There might be venues that are much worse - but if I have to pay nearly 100€ for a ticket and get a bad sound, I can't be satisfied. Adding the bad organisation and the long queues
I try to avoid this location - but unfortunately many concerts take place there.
